2 WINTER SPORTS 3

The Glières PlateauBEST SPOT FOR NORDIC SPORTS

The Glières Plateau (1680 m) is full of history. A natural protected area, it is also a real playground for outdoor sports. Covered with snow in winter, it is transformed into a major destination for Nordic sliding sports. Located 30 minutes away from Annecy and Geneva, the Plateau offers over 27 km of ski runs and snow-shoeing trails from 1 hr to 3 hrs. In this pristine area, you can

learn and practise different Nordic sports on the hard-packed trails. This area is also the training ground of champions like Jean-Marc Gaillard, winner of the bronze medal in cross-country skiing (relay 4 x 10 km) at Sotchi in 2014 and at the World Championships (relay) in 2015, champion of the “Foulée Blanche” cross-country ski event in 2016. This winter, for the first time,

amateurs and pros can slide on the Plateau at night under the stars. Every Thursday from December 14 to March 15, Haute Savoie Nordic offers sessions “by night”. This is the ideal opportunity to admire the light shows at the monument commemorating the Resistance. The Plateau is also hosting a new event for the official launching of the snow sliding season. The whole day of December 9 will be dedicated to Nordic skiing and the biathlon: “ski test”, with special brands present, advice from monitors, supervision, loans of equipment and a “ski sale”...The Festi’Glières will be back on February 21, 2018. This full day event dedicated to the discovery of Nordic sports is open to all. On the programme: Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, dog-sledding, biathlon, mountain safety workshops and avalanche transceivers, sledding, jack jumping and a memory and nature workshop.

In addition, a new detachable 6-seat chairlift has replaced the old 4-seat chairlift. It includes passenger cabins to enable walkers to easily ascend to the summit and come back down on foot or by sled. The Snow Festival, the ski resort’s major winter event, returns on February 24.

La SambuySKIING IN THE BAUGES REGIONAL NATURE PARK

On the heights around Faverges, 40 minutes away from Annecy and 20 minutes away from Albertville, the slopes of La Sambuy (1800 m) emerge in a spectacular natural setting. In the heart of the Bauges Regional Nature Park, skiers discover a new viewpoint over the lake and the mountains. This little family ski resort, open summer and winter, has expanded its activities

while preserving its surroundings. New this summer, the Tubby Jump is the ultimate thrill at La Sambuy and it will stay open this winter. Here, the ramp plunges straight down, ending in a dizzying leap into a giant soft airbag. The “4 seasons” sled run will also stay open for the winter season.

COLLECTIVE

Art by FriendsFor over three years, Art by Friends has welcomed passionate artists and amateurs of art in its gallery on the Avenue du Rhône. Camille, the founder, created an exhibition area, a workshop for artists and a bar in his local premises. Created around the culture of the skateboard, the collective tours the world. For the fall, two important events are planned: in November, the gallery will host the Opinel Series exhibition with over 200 works created with the knives of this renowned trademark. Annecy is the last stop for this travelling exhibition that has been on tour for three years. In every city where it was held (New York, Montréal, Geneva, etc.), it has enriched the new creations of local artists. In December, another important event for the ABF will be

the exhibition of the works by the artist Ben Thé, including paintings, drawings and reworked objects. Originally from Annecy, Ben Thé is today based in Brussels.

NOTEat the beginning of 2018 the collective will be holding “Punchline”, a collective exhibition by artists from around the world who were invited to submit their work based on famous quotes from literature, film or music. Free entrance

8 CULTURAL NEWS 9

Take a stroll through history and discover the hidden talents

OF LAKE ANNECY

If Lake Annecy is a playground for many sports, it also abounds with cultural activities. Through the historical monuments and museums, the history of Lake Annecy is revealed. As you tour the art galleries, theatres and concert halls, both local and foreign visitors are invited to discover the talents of the world and of the region.

ART AND HISTORY AT THE

Annecy Château MuseumThe Château Museum is a landmark monument in the heart of the old town of Annecy and until October 2, it is holding the China, art in movement exhibition: a look at the contemporary art scene in China and its artists, torn between artistic tradition and contemporary art, ideological change and international ambitions. From October 16 to December 31, a museum outreach exhibition immerses the visitor in the Rue Sainte-Claire during the sixties. Exhibited in the Annecy Genevois Hospital Centre, the photos of Jean-Pierre Lamy, a photographer from Annecy, are a witness to the importance of this thoroughfare in local life at the time and they dialogue with the images of Denis Vidalie, to update the soul of this street today. From December 1, 2017 to March 5, 2018, another artist from Annecy will be featured. Paul Cabaud, a painter and photographer in love with his native city, produces an endless series of paintings of Lake Annecy, its countryside, its forests, its rivers and scenes of daily life in the old town.

SWIM EVERY DAY IN THE LAKE

ESPECIALLY….IN WINTER Several swimming clubs have set up around Lake Annecy (Club Hell’Eau from Saint-Jorioz, The Vikings from Talloires-Montmin and the Lacustres from Duingt). The principle is simple: if the temperature of the water is 7°C, brave swimmers remain 7 minutes in the water, if it is 8°C, they swim for 8 minutes and so on…A sauna session is strongly advised beforehand to fully enjoy the benefits of this icy swim.

With this great return to local production, other grape varieties were also planted at Menthon-Saint-Bernard, Talloires-Montmin and Villaz.

WINTER INVENTIONS

Every summer, new “gadgets” emerge at Lake Annecy. These ideas come to life in winter, away from public view. This is especially the case with the Lazareth Amphibious vehicle, made in Annecy-le-vieux and the wake surf boards dedicated to women and made in Saint-Jorioz by Claire Crozet, the “Surf-lady from Annecy”. The region is full of innovative ideas originating from our local ambassadors.

PORTRAIT OF LUC NISSET,

DESIGNER SMITTEN WITH HIS HOMETOWN

His highly colourful creations draw attention to the architecture and countryside of Annecy and the lake. Born in Annecy, Luc Nisset, he grew up next to the Château Museum and has tried over many years to promote all the different aspects of his city through his art. Through his travels throughout the world he has brought back to his home intense colour, dynamic features and exoticism. From his career in the world of comics alongside René Goscinny and Marcel Gottlieb, he kept his mischievous side and brought humour and freshness to the landscapes around the lake and in the old historic city centre. The collaboration between the artist and the Lake Annecy Tourism Office was a natural progression. His work is on sale in different tourism kiosks around the city.
