INTERNATIONAL
SUMMER PROGRAM
Open Enrollment for LAIAD 2019
International Summer Program starts now.
A portfolio is the most
significant factor for a
successful application to an
architecture school in the United
States. A good portfolio can help
applicants get admitted to the
best architecture schools without
perfect GPA, GRE, or TOEFL scores.
At LAIAD, the process of making a
quality portfolio is a statement
of design excellence, not just a
graphic exercise. In our view,
a portfolio is only as good as
the work it contains. Founded
by William M. Taylor FAIA in
2001, the Los Angeles Institute
of Architectural Design (LAIAD)
is acknowledged as a leading
design institute for Master of
Architecture degree preparation
programs.
LAIAD’s faculty has served
in prestigious architecture
schools as faculty members and
participated in the admissions
process. LAIAD’s faculty has a full
understanding of the admission
criteria of architecture schools
and have rich teaching experience
and an excellent track record in
helping students apply for masters
in architecture design programs.
In recent years, graduates of
LAIAD’s 1 year (USA) Graduate
Preparation Program for Master
in Architecture had a 100%
applicant success rate at an
MArch 1 program. Many students
were accepted at prestigious
institutions such as Harvard,
Yale, MIT, the University of
Pennsylvania, Columbia University,
SCI-ARC, the University of Southern
California and UCLA, and have
received an average of $ 100,000
per year scholarship. LAIAD is
now leveraging this (USA) program
to help students from outside the
US enter and excel at Master of
Arcitecture programs in the USA.

Summer Program
Los Angeles Institute of Architecture & Design
The courses of the Summer Program for International students are all interrelated. The goal of our curriculum is to help students to improve their design skills and to help our students complete a high-quality design portfolio for successful future application to Bachelor or Master of Architecture programs. The program focuses on the following three courses:
1. Design Studio
The content of this program is similar to
that found in the first year of leading
Master of Architecture programs. The style
of teaching involves lectures, one-on-one
progress reviews, weekly collective reviews,
and mid-term / final reviews. The intent
of the studio is to help students with
design thinking, structure, modeling, urban
context, and other design issues to complete
one to two professional quality projects.
For students who need to start applying
right away, the studio project can focus on
the improvement of previous projects. At
the the end of this course, students will
have a tremendous improvement in design
skills to help in the completion of one or
two high-quality designs for the Master of
Architecture application.
2. 3D Model Building Course
The modeling course focuses on improving
students’ 3D modeling skills. Our faculty
teaches software including Rhino surface
modeling, Grasshopper parametric design,
and T-Splines. During the course, students
will learn how to use ths software to
construct complex 3D models and render them
as part of the final work of the design
class. In addition, architectural modeling
lessons will guide students through the
creation of independent pieces of work to
demonstrate their modeling skills in their
portfolio. Students will also have access to
advanced physical model making techniques
such as 3D printing.
3. 2D Graphic Course
In this graphics and presentation
course, students will learn advanced
methods of architectural presentation
including photo realistic renderings,
professional plan/section drawings,and
the graphic design of their portfolios.
We also teach software including Adobe
Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe
Indesign. The 2D graphics course is also
closely related to the above two courses.
Students will visualize the result of
the design class through this graphic
focused course. In addition, the 2D
graphics presentation course will also
help students to improve and perfect
the graphic expression of students’
previous works to better reflect the
design language of American architecture
schools.
William M. Taylor, FAIA
Design Studio and Founding Director
William receive his M-Arch degree from
Cranbrook Academy of Art where he studied
with Daniel Libeskind for 3 years. Before
founding LAIAD in 2001, William has
taught architectural design since 1983,
with positions at Harvard University,
the University of Houston, and at
California State Polytechnic University,
Pomona, where he developed an innovative
new program for basic architectural
design. William is also a principal at
TFO Architecture in Los Angeles and is
involved with a variety of local and
international projects.
William has persistently explored the
relationship between form and idea
and his work at LAIAD is an outgrowth
of a 30-year effort, in both teaching
and practice, to develop and promote a
design methodology based on idea and
order rather than visual composition.
In recognition of his work at LAIAD,
William was recognized with the AIA Los
Angeles Educator of the Year award in
2005. His design work has been featured in
magazines such as L’Arca, Arkkitehti, and
A+U and been included in international
exhibitions including the Venice Biennale,
the Milan Triennale, the Centre Pompidou,
and the Museum of Finnish Architecture,
where it is part of the permanent
collection.
Carl Smith, AIA
Design Studio and Co-Director
Carl Smith received his bachelor’s degree in
Architecture from Cal Poly Pomona in 1997.
Carl was a founding member of Telemachus
Studio in 1995. His teaching experience
includes 4th and 5th year design studios
at Cal Poly Pomona that dealt with the
integration of digitally-based entertainment
and virtual-reality technologies into an
urban environment. Carl is currently a
principal at Telemachus Studio and has
numerous built projects throughout Los
Angeles.
