Happy New Year from Laguna Road Physical Education!

As we begin a new year and gear up for Healthy Heart Month, we are encouraging students to come up with New Year's resolutions that can help them live a healthy life. We've reminded them that even small health and fitness changes can make a large impact. Some of their resolutions include: limiting fast food and soda, taking exercise breaks, volunteering, getting more sleep, eating more vegetables, stop eating when your tummy is full, play more, and smile more. Please save the following dates for Healthy Heart Month. There will be more details to follow in the Tuesday Bulletin:

Thursday, February 7th A - Z lunch

Wednesday, February 20th Kindergarten Jump Rope for Heart Day

(9:00-10:00am during Kindergarten Physical Education Time)

Thursday, February 21st Grades 1st - 6th Jump Rope for Heart Day

BE INSPIRED.

You Can Make a Difference.

Laguna Road PTA has a unique way to encourage our children to give back to their community. We invite all students to join our new “Laguna Road Reaching Out”, a Community Service Program.

Brett Levinson (2nd Grade/Mrs. Nicholes) joined Laguna Road Reaching Out and decided to reach out by volunteering in a soup kitchen. Here is his story:

“On December 14 2012, my Mom and I volunteered at the soup kitchen at our church, St. Andrew's.  My job is to hand out the utensils and bread, and when everyone was finished eating I helped hand out the desserts.  We fed 92 people that night and they were very thankful for the food.  I said, Enjoy your meal and thanks for coming.”

On November 13, 2012, the second graders of Room 11 began their service learning project.

Service Learning is a method of teaching that combines the character-building aspects of community service with academic content standards.

To begin, the students brainstormed many important community issues; and after a vote, litter/recycling was the chosen project topic. The students then researched about litter and recycling during technology lab.

Using their knowledge of the topic, they voted to have a litter clean up as the service component of the project. On December 4, 2012, the students worked in pairs to pick up litter around the lunch area.

Using the data from their service, the students created math problems to practice their two-digit subtraction skills. To reflect on the experience, the students typed about what they will do to help keep the world clean.

Throughout the service learning project, the students of Room 11 learned about and acted upon a community issue they found important, as well as developedand reinforced their reading, writing, math, and technology skills.

• What is the new “Tuesday Bulletin?” All flyers, either school wide or grade specific, which are either informative or optional will be posted online. The Tuesday Bulletin will be your “one-stop” where you can find a concise summary of the week’s information. The contents of the Tuesday Bulletin will be posted online as well every Tuesday.

• What will change? All school wide flyers which are either informative or optional only will be posted online. This includes but is not limited to school closures, school events, after school offerings, community offerings, etc.

• Will my child no longer bring home a Tuesday Folder? The Tuesday Folder will continue to be used as a tool to bring home completed work and important papers which must be completed and signed by a parent (e.g. field trip forms). This will become your primary source for parent-teacher communication.

• How will I know when new information has been posted? You will receive a email every Tuesday with direct links and informational summaries to the new information which has been posted.

When is this change taking place? All flyers will continue to be printed on paper and sent home in your child’s Tuesday folder through January 31st. Beginning February 1st, only the Tuesday Bulletin will be printed and sent home in the Tuesday Folder.

• What is the difference between the Tuesday Folder and the Tuesday Bulletin? The Tuesday Folder will continue to be used for classroom or grade specific communication with parents. The Tuesday Bulletin will be utilized for school wide communication.

We have successfully launched the Tuesday Bulletin, the online version of the Tuesday Folder flyers. Hard copies of flyers will continue to be sent home in the Tuesday Folder through the end of January 2013. Effective February 1, 2013, hard copies of school-wide flyers will no longer be sent home in the Tuesday Folder.

Why is an online bulletin important at Laguna Road School?

•Our school can save thousands of dollars in supply costs annually with an online bulletin.•It shows Laguna Road School’s commitment to “going green” in support of our environment.•If we want our children to enter the 21st century with the technology skills to succeed, we need

to set an example by engaging and interacting with Laguna Road School utilizing the digital tools available to us.

Did You KnowOur 5th Graders Battled the British and Won?

This past month, 5th graders at Laguna Road re-enacted important historical events such as the Boston Tea Party, the Battle of Concord & Lexington, and King George III, all in the name of education.

Students portrayed important people in history that helped

to ensure the freedoms we hold true today.  Heroes such as Molly Pitcher, Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Adams, Betsy Ross and Benjamin Franklin, just to name a few.

The students shined in their re-enactments and made their parents & teachers very proud.

Many of you know Mrs. Suzy Jurgensen as she was a long-time staff member of Laguna Road School. Mrs. Jurgensen retired from teaching at Laguna Road last year; however, lucky for us, she hasn’t left us. Mrs. Jurgensen is now a member of the Laguna Road Support Our School Foundation Board of Directors.

As a Board Member, Mrs. Jurgensen has volunteered to research and develop grants for our school and has been working closely with Jeanne Maisenbach to edit and submit grant requests.  In addition to securing grants on her own,  she has offered her support to the teaching staff with grant proposals as needed. Here is a recap of

the opportunities they are pursuing for Laguna Road through our Support Our School Foundation:

1. Phelps Grant submitted for 30 iPads for Kindergarten.

2. Schools First Grant submitted for 10 iPads for 3rd grade.

3. Secured a Fullerton Tech Foundation SEEDS Grant (est. $1050) for 3 iPads for Physical Education. Additional FTF SEEDS grants were completed/ submitted by Ms. Michalski, Mrs. Wilson and Mrs. Winthrop.

4. Secured a Special School Grant for school wide projects that are not technology related from the Fullerton Education Foundation. Our grant proposal requested funds to purchase Speed Stacks for our Physical Education Program. Active participation with this tool helps to develop both the right and left sides of the brain which gives the students’ brain power a boost. The grant (total $930.00) will fund two Speed Stack 30 Stack Sport Packs, enough stacks for 120 students to work individually and in pairs.

If you have grant opportunities to discuss or know of grant/donation opportunities at your company, you can contact Mrs. Jurgensen through the school office.

The mission of Laguna Road School is to achieve educational excellence, in partnership with parents and community, to prepare all students, through the use of knowledge, skills and behaviors, to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow. Because technology continues to play an

important role in modern industrial society and technological integration is vital to ensure students’ success, the leadership of Laguna Road is developing a formal, long-term technology plan for the school.

The goal is to develop a 21st Century Learning Initiative that strengthens existing & proposed curricula and supports meaningful, engaged learning for all students based on the shared vision of administration, educators, parents, community members, and business leaders who have technological expertise,

Developing a plan for using technology to support education means more than providing for the acquisition of computers and software; as technology is merely a tool for supporting teaching and learning. A successful technology plan must promote meaningful learning; provide for the needed professional development and support; and respond flexibly to change. A Technology Planning Committee has been created and consists of representatives from all segments of the Laguna Road community.

Committee members are developing a plan vision, determining the goals that must be met to reach it, and creating steps to implement these goals. Estimated date of plan completion is February 1, 2013. Following are the committee members:

Do you know how blood flows to your heart or how human body systems work?  Our 5th graders know the answers to these questions and many more after learning about the body systems with the use of iPads.  Mrs. Wilson borrowed 20 iPads from the Fullerton School District to use in her classroom rotations for two weeks,.

During the first week of rotations, all 5th graders used the Educreations app to describe how blood flows

through the heart.  They had to label the heart’s major parts, draw the direction of blood flow, and record in their own voices how the heart pumps blood.

Classmates had the opportunity to play Jeopardy with each other during the second week of rotations.  The Jeopardy content was customized to focus on the circulatory, respiratory, nervous, and digestive systems.

These science rotations were popular with the fifth graders, and the engagement provided by the iPads during these creative lessons were rewarding.

Making Science Come Alive with the iPadWednesdays in Fifth Grade are dedicated to science rotations.  Students move between the three 5th grade classrooms for the opportunity to learn from peer teachers in addition to their own teachers.

On behalf of the students, thank you to

Mrs. Wilson for developing these lessons

with the iPads. Our fifth grade teachers rock!

Clara Aulisio, a student in Room 10, was kind enough to share her pet turtle, Walnut, with her classroom. The timing was perfect because the students were learning about habitats.  The kids wanted to give Walnut a new home so Mrs. Winthrop wrote a grant for a turtle habitat to the Pet Care Trust, a non-profit foundation. The foundation’s purpose is to promote public understanding regarding the value of and right to enjoy companion animals; to enhance knowledge about companion animals through research and education; and to promote professionalism among members of the companion animal community.

To the classroom’s delight, their grant was fulfilled, and Room 10 received a Deluxe Turtle Aquarium, and a NEW TURTLE FRIEND for Walnut.  The kids voted and chose the name, Cashew, for their new turtle. Room 10 would love for you to visit the newest additions to their classroom, Walnut and Cashew!

NEW YEAR. NEW OPPORTUNITIES.

Two years ago, I spent the holiday break in Hawaii, and while I was there, I found a top ten list that I want to share with you for the new year.  I believe it's a list by which we should all aspire to live.

THINGS I LEARNED ON MAUI

1. Speak kindly to others2. Watch the hula3. Visit grandparents4. Have a nice dinner with your

family5. Hug a keiki (child)6. Spend time with your family7. Plant a tree8. Go fishing9. Smell the scents of tropical

flowers10. Have a luau

What struck me about this list was that although we, in California, don't have luaus or watch the hula, all the other things are what make for a pretty good life.

Enjoy 2013.

Look for the good in everyone, and always remember to hug a keiki.

Find a project that you can be passionate about. Be creative and have fun! Here are some ideas: • Read to residents at senior citizen

housing• Have a garage sale & donate the

proceeds to charity• Gather a few of your friends to

pick up trash• Organize a collection of gently

used toys/clothes for a charity, such as Pathways of Hope

• Help elderly neighbors take trash cans to the curb each week

Write a short account of what you accomplished (incl. location, time spent and a photo if possible). Submit to the office c/o Susan Levinson. Entries may be included in our PTA newsletter.

Share your ideas and efforts with your fellow students. Each month the teachers will make time for students to tell the class about how they made a difference in the lives of others.

This requires as little as one hour a month. At the end of the year PTA will recognize all those students who participated in the program. Please contact Susan Levinson (714) 931-7647 for more information.

You’re never too young to have a positive impact on your community!

BE INSPIRED.You Can Make a Difference.

Any one of us can make a difference by showing others it is better to give then to receive. Sophia Lambros (Room 5/Ms. Michalski) found a creative way to raise money to support Laguna Road School.

This past summer, Sophia’s grandmother taught her to crochet, and since then she has been using her newfound skills to make hats to help her school. To date, she has sold over 20 items with all proceeds from this project being donated directly to Laguna Road’s technology fund.

Sophia is continually trying to improve her craft. By expanding her repertoire from hats to hair clips and headbands, she hopes she will be able to reach a broader audience and earn more money for our school.

Sophia shared that she feels good knowing she is helping her classmates at school and that her crochet crafts make others happy. She also thanks her family and friends who have supported her by buying and promoting her work.

Because of her efforts, Sophia was able to donate $500 to Laguna Road’s Support Our School Foundation. Thank you, Sophia, for your generous donation.

© Orange County Friday Night Live Partnership “Live Quarterly”.

Congratulations Roadrunners! Due to your generous donations of change during December, we raised $475.00 for one very deserving family within our Laguna Road School community. This family felt truly blessed to be a part of our Laguna Road family. Helping others during the holiday season is the true meaning of the holiday spirit. Thank you for making change.
