Techsters vs. Big Six Many times Louisiana Tech doesn’t receive the respect it deserves because of the fact it has never played in what is considered to be one of the top six conferences in the country. However, if you look at Tech’s all-time record against teams from the “Big Six,” it might help put the Lady Techsters mys-tique in perspective.

Sunday, Dec. 11

RUSTON – Freshman Courtney Hayes free throw with 23.5 seconds to play lifted Louisiana Tech to a 63-62 win over Mississippi State Sunday afternoon before 2,243 fans at the Thomas Assembly Center. After Hayes hit 1-of-2 free throws to give Tech (4-6) the one-point advantage, Mississippi State (7-2) had one last opportunity to win. How-ever, Diamber Johnson’s off-balance fl oater in the lane was short and Tech prevented the Bulldogs from getting the offensive board as the fi nal seconds ticked off the clock. After trailing for the majority of the game – Tech didn’t take its fi rst lead until Jasmine Bendolph’s three-pointer with 13:08 to play in the game – , the Lady Techsters fought back and took an eight-point lead at 61-53 with 1:50 to play on a driving layup by Kiara Young. Johnson hit a free throw to cut it to seven points and then completed a conventional three-point play with 1:13 to play to close the gap to 61-57. On the play, Bendolph was whistled for her fi fth foul as the senior point guard left the game as Weatherspoon inserted Hayes. Back-to-back turnovers by Tech allowed Mississippi State to cut the defi -cit to 61-60 with less than a minute to play. Hayes hit 1-of-2 free throws with 47 seconds left to push the advantage to 62-20 before Johnson’s short jumper in the lane tied the game at 62-62 with 36 seconds left. After a Tech timeout, Porsha Porter was called for a foul attempting a steal on the inbounds play in front of the Lady Techster bench, sending Hayes to the free throw line for the eventual winner. Tech’s bench came up big in the win as Young, Angie Felton, Brittany Hardy and Tavasha Anderson combined to score 32 points and pull down 17 rebounds. Mississippi State, which entered the game shooting only 26 percent from the three-point line as a team, hit 8-of-16 from behind the arc in the opening 20 minutes as Johnson and Porsha Porter combined to hit seven and scored 30 of the Bulldogs’ 35 points. Tech shot only 28 percent (10-36) from the fi eld in the opening half and trailed 35-28 at the break.

What’s Up Next Following today’s game, LA Tech travel to New York to compete in the St. John’s Chartwell Holiday Classic this weekend. Tech faces Memphis Saturday at 2 p.m. CT and then will face either St. John’s or Prairie View Sunday.

2010-11 Recap Louisiana Tech posted a 24-8 record, captured the WAC regu-lar season conference title and advanced to the program’s 28th NCAA Tournament. The Lady Techsters played the nation’s 24th toughest non-conference schedule and then posted a 15-1 record in WAC regular season games. Tech earned the No. 1 seed in the WAC Tournament in Las Vegas, falling 78-76 to Fresno State on a last second shot in the title game. Tech earned an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament where it fell to 7th seed Rutgers 76-51 in Shreveport in the fi rst round.

Sharing the Rock Through 10 games, Louisiana Tech has seen six different play-ers lead them in scoring. The Lady Techsters have been led in scoring in at least one game by Jasmine Bendolph (3), Shantale Bramble-Donaldson (2), Whitney Jones (2), Angie Felton, Tava-sha Anderson and Kiara Young.

Fruit Basket Turnover Louisiana Tech has started six different lineups in 10 game thus far this year. Last season Tech started only four different lineups all year long in 32 games.

Frosh It Is In Louisiana Tech’s 79-53 win over Houston Wednesday night, the two teams combined to start seven true freshmen. Tech start-ed three true freshmen while Houston started four true freshmen.

Double Doubles Prior to her six-point, fi ve-rebound performance in Tech’s win over Houston in its last outing, senior Shantale Bramble-Donald-son recorded double doubles in three straight games. Bramble-Donaldson had recorded only three double doubles through her fi rst 37 career games at LA Tech but has recorded them against Alabama, Tulane and Western Kentucky.

Anderson Shines Sophomore forward Tavasha Anderson had a coming out party in Tech’s 79-53 win over Houston Wednesday night. In that contest she scored a career-high 17 points and grabbed a career-high seven rebounds in 23 minutes. Her previous career-highs were nine points (vs. Oral Roberts) and four rebounds (three different times).

Frazier Makes Most of the Start After starting the fi rst three games of the season for LA Tech, freshman Whitney Frazier had been coming off the bench the last fi ve games. However, Teresa Weatherspoon inserted the El Dorado native back into the starting lineup against Houston and she responded with a career-high 16 points and six rebounds in 34 minutes. Her previous career-high was seven points against Alabama.

Bendolph Sees Double Senior guard Jasmine Bendolph recorded her second career double-double in Tech’s win over Houston, scoring 14 points and dishing out 11 assists (only two turnovers) in 34 minutes. The Mobile, Alabama native’s other career double double came last year in Reno when she scored 15 points and dished out 13 assists against the Nevada Wolf Pack.

Shooting the Three After connecting on only 25-of-97 three-pointers last year, senior point guard Jasmine Bendolph is closing in on passing those marks early in this seasono. Bendolph has already hit 21-of-52 three-pointers through nine games for 40.3 percent. At her cur-rent pace, she would hit more three-pointers this season than she combined for in her fi rst three years (52).

Hardy Highs Junior Brittany Hardy scored a career-high 14 points in Tech’s win over Old Dominion. Hardy, who entered the game averag-ing 3.3 points, hit 5-of-9 fi eld goals and 3-of-4 free throws in 23 minutes. The Orlando, Fla. native sat out last season while giving birth to her daughter.

Techsters Face Tough Non-Conference Slate Louisiana Tech’s 15-game non-conference slate for this year will be challenging to say the least. The Lady Techsters face 13 teams that posted winning records last season, including 10 that won 20 or more contests. Overall, 19 of Tech’s 29-regular season games (counting WAC play) particiapted in the postseason a year go.Thirteen of the 15 opponents also fi nished in the top 150 of the RPI last year.

Last Time Out vs. Arkansas StateLA Tech 84, Mississippi State 54

Dec. 15, 2010

RUSTON - Adrienne Johnson scored 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Whitney Jones added 17 points to lead Louisiana Tech to an 84-54 win over Arkansas State Wednesday night before 1,654 fans at the Thomas Assem-bly Center. Tech (5-3) managed to do what no other team had accomplished all season long as they dominated Arkansas State (6-5) for all 40 minutes of play. Entering the contest, the Red Wolves four previous losses had been by three points to 15th ranked Iowa, six points in double overtime at SMU, 11 points at Missouri State, and 12 points to 18th ranked St. John’s. However, the Lady Techsters built a 22-point halftime lead and never looked back in winning for the 27th straight time in the series. After watching her team commit 27 turnovers in Sunday’s win over the Jaguars, Weatherspoon harped all week on valuing the basketball. Bendolph, who had committed 24 turnovers in the last four games, ended the night with six points, four assists and only one turnover in 21 minutes of play. However, it was Johnson and Jones who sparked the Techsters fi rst half dominance as the duo combined for 28 points in the opening 20 minutes on 12-of-18 shooting. With Tech leading 36-24 with four minutes to play in the opening half and the game still well within doubt, Jones and Johnson combined to score nine points as Tech ended the half on an 11-1 run. Tech shot 56 percent (20-36) from the fi eld in the opening 20 minutes of play while holding the Red Wolves to a mere 27 percent (9-34). Jones and Johnson then ignited an early run in the second half that saw the Lady Techsters push their lead to 67-37 on a Tarkeisha Wysinger-Mackey layup at the 12:26 mark. Weatherspoon emptied her bench with just over 10 minutes to play as the Tech reserves executed down the stretch to maintain the 30-point margin of victory. Shantale Bramble-Donaldson added 10 points and seven rebounds in only 12 minutes for Tech, which won for the third straight time.

LADY TECHSTER BASKETBALLWorking Overtime In 2010-11, Louisiana Tech played back-to-back overtime games for only the second time in its program’s history -- and the fi rst time in more than 25 years. LA Tech defeated Hawaii 74-69 in overtime on Saturday, Jan. 8 and then defeated Fresno State 94-92 in triple overtime on Thursday, Jan. 13. The only other time in LA Tech’s history that the Lady Techsters played back-to-back overtime games was during the 1984-85 season when Tech defeated UL-Monroe 79-77 and Southern Cal 83-79 in con-secutive contests.

Triple Overtime Louisiana Tech has now played 31 overtime games in its history but its Jan. 13, 2011 triple overtime game against Fresno State was the fi rst ever. Tech has played three double overtime games in its history, the last one coming against Iowa in 2005-06.

Overtime in the WAC Since joining the Western Athletic Conference in 2001-02, Louisiana Tech has played 12 overtime games in league action, posting an 8-4 re-cord. The most common opponent in those 12 games is Fresno State who the Lady Techsters have played four overtime games against.

Overtime Becoming Common Place In the fi rst 34 years of LA Tech’s existence, the Lady Techsters played only 23 overtime games (1114 total games). However, since the start of the 2008-09 season, LA Tech has played eight overtime games (106 total games).

Jones Gets Sixth Year Louisiana Tech guard Whitney Jones saw her fi rst two years of college basketball cut short by unrelated injuries, thus the West Monroe na-tive won an appeal to the NCAA for a sixth year. The former two-time Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year played in eight games in 2006-07 as a true freshman at Baylor before sustaining a stress fracture in her lower leg that prevented her from practicing even after transferring to LA Tech at the beginning of the winter quarter. The following season, Jones started the fi rst seven games for LA Tech and was averaging double fi gures before she sustained a fracture in her knee that required surgical repair, forcing her to miss the remainder of the season.

Jones Joins 1,000-Point Club Senior guard Whitney Jones became the 40th member of the LA Tech 1,000-point club when she knocked down a driving layup with 16:36 to play in the second half of a 69-34 win over San Jose State Jan. 6, 2011. The West Monroe native recently broke into the top 30 in scoring and is moving up the list.

LADY TECHSTER BASKETBALL

Hayes Tabbed Mini-Me Louisiana Tech freshman point guard Courtney Hayes has already drawn high praise from her Hall of Fame coach Teresa Weath-erspoon. Hayes, who is known for “living” in the gym -- even sleeping in the lockerroom at times -- was referred to as a Mini-Me by Weatherspoon, who said the 5-foot-6-inch Nevada native reminded her a lot of herself in how she lives and breathes the game of basketball.

Victorious Despite Lack of Offense The 52 points scored in its 52-44 win over Southern last year were the lowest total a Louisiana Tech team has scored in a vic-tory since defeating Mississippi State 52-41 on Dec. 13, 2005. It’s the fourth lowest output in a win by a LA Tech team in its history.

Bramble-Donaldson Knew Spoon Senior forward Shantale Bramble-Donaldson originally verballed to play at Clemson before changing her mind at coming to LA Tech. The reason? Bramble-Donaldson grew up in the Bronx, New York and watched Tech head coach Teresa Weatherspoon play during her days with the Liberty. Weatherspoon and LA Tech were recruiting two of Bramble-Donaldson’s teammates at Indian River State College in Florida and the 6-foot-1-inch forward got a chance to meet T-Spoon. Bramble-Donaldson decommit-ted to Clemson and committed to LA Tech where she signed last November.

It’s In Her Genes Louisiana Tech sophomore Jelena Vucinic comes by her basket-ball ability honestly as both of her parents played internationally. Her father, Nenad, played for the New Zealand national team and currently is the head coach of the national team. Her mother, Tatjana Zizic, also played for the New Zealand national team. Her mother and step-father are both in attendance at this weekend’s NCAA Tournament games in Bossier City.

Point Guard Money with Freebies Point guard Jasmine Bendolph is nothing but money at the free throw line the last two years. Bendolph hit 65-of-77 for 85 per-cent as a junior while connecting on 85 percent from the charity stripe as a sophomore as well. It is the fourth and fi fth best single season percentage in LA Tech history. However, she is only 9-of-14 from the free throw line thus far this year.

Miss Clutch Jasmine Bendolph has hit a number of big time shots last year but none bigger than the game-winning jumper against Fresno State in Tech’s 2010 WAC Tournament championship victory. Ben-dolph’s 18-footer with 34 seconds to play gave Tech a one-point
