General information

Shippensburg University shapes its athletic program to fit within the overall academic goals of the university—maintaining a balance between athletics and academics.

Since 1984, the university’s Office of Institu-tional Research has monitored the progress of our athletes in the classroom. The original study found that Shippensburg was ahead of many institutions in meeting the standards of Propositions 48 and 64—two NCAA resolu-tions designed to set minimum educational levels in collegiate athletes.

Proposition 64 of the NCAA established a minimum score of 700 in the SAT and a 2.0 grade point average in 11 core curriculum courses in high school. Proposition 48 carries these minimums even further and outlines availability of scholarships to freshmen athletes based on their school performance.

Incoming freshmen athletes show prepara-tion levels comparable to those of all incom-ing students. In 2009, the average SAT score for incoming freshmen athletes was 993, only slightly below the SAT average for new incom-ing students of 1013. Both groups average in the upper two-fifths of their graduating high school classes.

Today Shippensburg University athletes con-tinue to uphold the study’s findings. The qual-ity point average (QPA) for all athletic teams in 2009-10 was 2.51 on a 4.0 scale. The 10 women’s teams had a 3.10 overall average while the eight men’s teams averaged 2.51. This can be compared to the fall 2009 figures: the total student body QPA averaged 2.80, females were slightly higher at 2.92, and males were slightly lower at 2.67.

Shippensburg’s athletes continue to show high six-year graduation rates. Sixty-two percent of those receiving athletically related financial aid graduate within six years of enrolling. The 2009 NCAA Graduation Rate Report found that nationally, among public Division II schools, the graduation rate was 47 percent with ath-letes graduating at 55 percent. Retention stud-ies by the Office of Institutional Research and Planning show male athletes at Shippensburg graduated at 58 percent and those receiving athletically related financial aid graduated at 57 percent. In addition, female athletes graduated at 74 percent and those receiving athletically related financial aid graduated at a rate of 80 percent.

Since 1975, 41 athletes have earned Academic All-America honors and five athletes have earned NCAA Postgraduate scholarships. Many more of Shippensburg’s fine athletes have been nominated for these and other regional and national honors.

Although the academic standards are stringent at Shippensburg, the 20 athletic teams have won about 58 percent of all their contests since 1975. Twelve university teams have won 65 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championships in the same period.

fitness CenterIn addition to the rehabilitation center, Shippensburg University has a complete weight-training and fitness center inside the field house. The facility contains state-of-the-art equipment that benefits the athletes on campus and remains open more than 80 hours per week.

The facility is undergoing a complete renovation this winter and will be operational in February with brand new equipment specifically designed to enhance the well being of the student athletes on campus.

The cornerstone of Shippensburg’s recent con-struction is a brand new Student Recreation Center - an 8,000 square foot, two-level, fitness center with free weights and cardio machines. It houses a four-court gymnasium, an elevated running track, racquet and handball courts, and exercise and dance spaces.

training facilitiesThe scope and importance of sports medicine at Shippensburg University has shown rapid growth in recent years. In addition to upgraded facilities in Heiges Field House, the university completed the renovation of a sports medicine facility in Hender-son Gymnasium that primarily serves the women’s lacrosse, field hockey, and softball teams. Three full-time trainers oversee the training needs of 20 men’s and women’s athletic teams.

Shippensburg ‘93-’94M

Twelfth Year

Kristy Trn enters her 12th season as head coach of the Shippensburg University women’s basketball team in 2010 as the winningest coach in Lady Raider basketball history. The two-time PSAC Western Division Coach of the Year has a career record of 195-122 overall and a mark of 78-58 in conference games.

Shippensburg has had seven winning seasons under Trn. The team has also posted three seasons of 20 or more wins and has advanced to the PSAC tournament eight times–winning PSAC championships in 2000 and 2001. She was named PSAC Western Division Coach of the Year in 2001 and 2002.

In Trn’s 16 seasons at Shippensburg as both the head coach and full-time assistant coach from 1994-present, the Lady Raiders have a record of 323-150 (.682), 12 winning seasons, eight 20-win seasons, eight NCAA Tournament appearances, seven PSAC championships, three NCAA East Region titles, three NCAA Division II Elite Eight appearances and a final national ranking of No. 2 in 1996.

In addition, the program has also boasted 22 All-PSAC divisional First Team selections, 11 Second Team selections, seven Athlete of the Year and five Rookie of the Year honors.

Shippensburg’s schedule has been highly competitive under Trn. In 2008-09, Trn guided the Lady Raiders to 12 victories while facing what was arguably the toughest schedule in the Atlantic Region – playing eight teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament, including national runner-up Franklin Pierce, yet was ranked as high as No. 15 in the na-tion during the early months of the campaign.

In 2007-08, Shippensburg thrived with a combination of veteran leader-ship and young scoring threats, totaling a 19-9 record and advancing to the team’s second consecutive PSAC Tournament. Shippensburg led the conference in three-point shooting (38.6 percent) and assist-to-turnover ratio (0.92) while committing the second-fewest turnovers in the PSAC.

In the 2006-07 season, Shippensburg regained its standing as one of the top teams in the PSAC after finishing with an overall record of 17-11, improving by five victories from a disappointing 2005-06 campaign. A year after going 2-10 in conference play, the Lady Raiders went 7-5 in the PSAC Western Division to finish third and begin a new streak of consecutive PSAC Women’s Basketball Championship appearances.

The success of the program continued to flourish under Trn during the 2004-05 season as the Lady Raiders finished third in the highly compet-itive Western Division with an 8-4 record, the fifth time that the team has won at least seven conference games and finished in the top three. She also continued her success in developing and mentoring some of the top players in the PSAC as Shippensburg had two players named to the All-PSAC Western Division First Team and the Rookie of the Year.

In 2003-04, Trn led Shippensburg to a 19-11 record and an appearance in the PSAC tournament championship game for the eighth time in school history before losing to eventual national champion California (Pa.). The Vulcans finished the year with a 35-1 record with the team’s only loss coming at Shippensburg, 77-73, on Feb. 21, 2004. In 2002-03, the Lady Raiders finished fourth in the PSAC Western Division and in 2001-02, totaled the team’s eighth-straight 20-win season.

Two years earlier in 2001, Trn guided Shippensburg to its sixth consecu-tive conference championship, still, the only time in PSAC history that a men’s or women’s basketball team has won six-straight championships. The next closest team to challenge that mark was the California (Pa.) women who won three-straight from 2002-04.

Also that year, the Lady Raiders were ranked No. 4 in the nation in the final Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II Coaches’ Poll, advancing to the program’s second-straight NCAA Tournament under Trn before losing to North Dakota in the national semifinals. Off the court, Shippensburg had a 3.401 team grade point average, the 18th highest on the WBCA Honor Roll and the only team from the East Region listed.

In Trn’s first year at the helm during the 1999-2000 season, the Lady Raiders won the PSAC Western Division championship as well as the team’s fourth-straight conference tournament title. Under Coach Trn, the women’s basketball team has also thrived academically - never holding a team grade-point average lower than 2.75 while compiling a grade-point average above 3.0 in five seasons.

A 1993 graduate of Shippensburg, Trn was a volunteer assistant coach for the Lady Raiders in 1994 before being elevated to a full-time assis-tant coach prior to the 1994-95 season. Trn received her master’s degree in administration of justice from Shippensburg in 1994.

As a player, Kristy (O’Hara) Trn scored 1,765 points, the fourth-highest total in school history. Her career free throw percentage of 78.8-percent stood for 11 seasons. Trn is also fifth in school history in rebounds (656), seventh in assists (348) and ninth in steals (180). She is the only player to have led Shippensburg in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals and blocked shots in the same season, a feat she accomplished during the 1992-93 season. Trn also held the Lady Raider single-game scoring record for 15 seasons, totaling 45 points on Feb. 11, 1993 against Cheyney.

In 1992 and 1993, Trn was named All-PSAC Western Division First Team after earning Second Team honors as a sophomore. As a ju-nior and senior, she was an All-Eastern College Athletic Conference

Jen Grassel Assistant Coach

Shippensburg ‘05

Fourth Year

Former Shippensburg women’s bas-ketball standout Jen Grassel (Scaffidi) begins her fourth full season as the primary assistant coach to the wom-en’s basketball team at Shippensburg University. Grassel is integral to the team’s gameday preparations and assists the head coach with game and practice duties as well as travel ar-rangements, recruiting and scouting.

A native of Turnersville, New Jersey, Grassel spent the 2006-07 season as the assistant varsity coach at her high school alma mater, Washington Township, while also working as a ninth grade math teacher. As an as-sistant on the varsity squad, she helped lead the Minutemaids to a 21-7 record, an Olympic Conference championship and berth in the sectional semifinals.

Immediately following her playing career with the Lady Raiders, Grassel was an assistant coach at Shippensburg Area Senior High School during the 2005-06 season where she worked with the guards. As a player at Washington Township High School, Grassel was a two-year captain and 1,000-point scorer en route to earning All-South Jersey First Team and All-State Honorable Mention honors.

Grassel returned to Shippensburg in 2007 following a highly successful four-year career in which she earned two All-PSAC Western Division honors, including a first team selection in 2005. She is currently ranked sixth on the school’s career scoring list with 1,583 points and holds the school records for career and season free throw percentage. She gradu-ated in 2005.

For her career, Grassel made 405-of-510 attempts for 79.4 percent while as a senior during the 2004-05 season, she made 104-of-122 attempts for 85.2 percent. She is also the only player to total over 100 assists in four-straight seasons and lead the team in assists four consecutive years. Scaffidi concluded her career with 481 assists.

A Daktronics, Inc. All-East Region Second Team selection as a senior, Scaffidi is the only player since Trn during the 1992-93 season, to lead the team in both scoring and assists, a feat she accomplished twice as a sophomore and a senior. She played in all 114 of the team’s games during her four-year career, starting in 111 of them. During that time, the Lady Raiders had a record of 69-45, a winning percentage of 60.5 percent.

Grassel and her husband Mike reside in Lewisberry.

Jack schenzelAssistant Coach

Shippensburg ’95

Sixth Year

A 1995 graduate of Shippensburg University, Schenzel begins his sixth year as an assistant coach with the women’s basketball team.

Schenzel has more than 12 years of basketball coaching experience and has been an integral member of the Lady Raider coaching staff over the past few seasons. Whether on the sidelines during a game or as a dedi-cated instructor during practice sessions, Schenzel has added important

guidance to the team. During the 2007-08 season, he served as the team’s head coach for three games while coach Kristy Trn was away for the birth of her second child.

Among Schenzel’s experience includes four years as a high school assistant coach at Shippensburg Area Senior High School. With the Greyhounds, the boys’ basketball team won a Mid-Penn champion-ship and made three district playoff appearances. He was also a coach at Grace Baptist Temple High School in St. Albans, West Virginia during the 2002-03 season.

As a student-athlete at Shippensburg, Schenzel received a bachelor of arts degree in history in 1995. A member of the track and field team, he was named All-ECAC as a junior and senior. During his career, the Red Raiders won three PSAC championships in 1992, 1993 and 1995.

Schenzel currently resides in Falling Waters, West Virginia with his wife, Erin, and two boys, Aidan and Micah. In addition to his work with the women’s basketball team, he works as a large claims property adjuster for Erie Insurance.

kirsten McbrideAssistant Coach

Second Year

Former Delta State forward Kirsten McBride returns to the women’s basketball coaching staff as a graduate assistant coach. McBride graduated in 2009 with a degree in biology after completing a three-year career with the Lady Statesmen in which she made two consecutive Division II Final Four appearances and won three Gulf South Conference champion-ships while her teams compiled an overall record of 91-12.

McBride appeared in 103 games during her career at Delta State, total-ing 506 points and 291 rebounds over the course of three seasons. Along with her Lady Statesmen teammates, McBride specialized in outstand-ing defense, as Delta State ranked first in the Gulf South Conference last season and fourth in Division II by allowing opponents an average of just 52 points per game.

As a senior, McBride shot 52 percent from the field and appeared in all 37 of the team’s games, making 12 starts. She averaged 4.9 points and 3.1 rebounds per game to along with 15 minutes per contest.

At Delta State, McBride was a part of one of the most successful pro-grams in the history of women’s collegiate basketball. The Lady States-men have compiled the most victories by any team in Division II history and have won six national championships, 15 Gulf South Conference titles and 13 NCAA regional trophies.

McBride is one of three children along with brothers Leroy III and Corey. She is studying psychology at Shippensburg.

season outlook

Shippensburg women’s basketball has entered a new era.

There’s no way to single-handedly replace an All-American, especially one of the highest caliber such as Lauren Beckley – the PSAC’s all-time leading scorer. Despite losing a player of that stature, Shippensburg enters the 2010-11 campaign armed with a variety of talent and more depth at each key position.

The team returns eight letterwinners to this year’s squad, including Shippensburg’s lone senior, All-PSAC Eastern Division First Team selection and Daktronics All-Atlantic Region Second Team selection Kasey Gardner. After finishing third in the league in scoring last season and totaling 1,268 points through three years of play, Gardner was picked to the Pre-season All-PSAC Eastern Division Team.

Gardner will also be one of three team captains this season along with junior guard Erin Varley and redshirt sophomore forward Caitlin Bamberger.

Head coach Kristy Trn returns for her 12th season at the helm of the Lady Raider program and has compiled 195 career victories. She was instrumental this offseason in constructing a recruiting class that features eight newcomers: five true freshman and three skilled transfer players.

“Our practices have been extremely competitive in terms of the pressure that we are putting on each other,” Trn said. “I think what will be the biggest change for us this season is that we will have a little bit more balance in our scoring. Every person that steps out on the floor has a strength that fits into a different spot, so I think that we’ve addressed some of our needs.”

Overall, the squad features 16 players. Com-petition for playing time is fierce, as only five players can be on the floor at any given time.

“The thing that we’ve seen in workouts and practices is that competition has really been there,” Trn said. “It will certainly help to make us a better team.”

One of the team’s primary goals this season involves its desire to reach the PSAC Tourna-ment. SU has come up just short in each of the past two seasons but will be seeking to use its balanced offense and increased speed to rise well above the fifth-place prediction affixed to the team by the league’s coaches in the preseason poll.

baCkCoURtThe team will miss Sheila Wasser – a smart and loyal point guard that avoided mistakes and had 51 assists in 18 starts as a senior. She is finishing her schooling at Shippensburg after receiving a degree completion award from the NCAA.

Varley – one of the aforementioned captains of the team - has an unparalleled work ethic and has recovered from an illness that slowed her as a sophomore. She has appeared in 53 of the team’s 57 games in two years and compiled a positive assist-to-turnover ratio during that span, averaging 65 assists per season.

Sophomore Morgan Taylor was making a solid impression at point guard during her debut season before an injury limited her play in the second half. Through 15 games, Taylor made 12 starts, averaging nearly five points and three assists per game.

Fellow sophomore Kerry Conroy made an immediate impact last season, starting 29 of the team’s 30 games. She averaged 5.2 points per game and led the team with 91 assists, including 11 in the final home game of the year versus West Chester that marked the most as-sists in one game by an SU player since 2004.

The team is excited to see what redshirt fresh-man Raediah Lyles can do this season. Lyles had her debut season end after just five minutes due to injury. She is an athletic guard who can provide defensive pressure along with assistance on the offensive end of the floor.

Two impact sophomore transfers from Geor-gian Court – twin sisters Dana and Shawna Wert – bring instant playmaking ability to the backcourt. Shawna ranked 12th in the CACC for scoring as a freshman with 13.7 points per game while leading the team with 47 steals. Dana averaged 10.2 points per game herself and led her squad with 86 assists.

Perhaps most importantly, both play-ers are tenacious defenders. They will help Shippensburg improve their press breakout while also looking to force turnovers on the defensive end.

Several true freshmen will also be seeking to make an immediate impact. Brianna Forde has earned praise in the preseason and has the ability to play any of the three guard positions. Codi McMaster boasts great speed and a knack for driving to the basket. Sarah Stry-buc could be an impact defensive player for Shippensburg with her quickness and strength. Jazmine Hall was a solid player for Central High School in downtown Philadelphia.

season outlook

fRoNtCoURtGardner has scored 1,268 points through her first three seasons of competition and has been an outstanding presence for the Lady Raider basketball team. Through 85 career games, Gardner has averaged 14.9 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. She is one of just 17 players in school history to achieve 1,000 career points. Last season, she was third in the PSAC in scoring behind Beckley and Cal’s Brooque Williams while ranking 15th in rebounding and playing the second-most minutes of any player in the league.

Junior Kaitlin Capriccio has great potential but has battled injuries during her two years with the team. She appeared in 24 games dur-ing her debut season and 21 games as a sopho-more – flashing signs of greatness on both ends of the floor.

Bamberger is coming off a solid breakthrough season – a campaign in which she ranked third on the team in scoring during confer-ence games. She averaged 7.0 points and 5.8 rebounds per game against PSAC East oppo-nents - including two double-doubles and four games in which she scored 10 or more points.

Before January, the Lady Raiders will have also faced UDC – an NCAA tournament team two years ago – along with PSAC West power-houses IUP and California (Pa.). West Virginia Wesleyan, always among the WVIAC’s elite, comes calling in December along with Mer-rimack from the NE-10.

The mandated PSAC crossover schedule fea-tures road trips to Edinboro and Lock Haven in the first week of 2011. Clarion and Gannon visit Heiges Field House the next weekend. The Golden Knights reached the Final Four last season.

Shippensburg is in its third season as a member of the PSAC Eastern Division after spending 21 seasons in the PSAC West. Since joining the Western Division prior to the 1987-88 season, the Lady Raiders won six PSAC West titles, the most of any current Western Division team. The team’s divisional opener will be on January 12 against Kutztown.

Junior Lindsay Howard continues to make strides as a post player and has appeared in 39 games over the course of two seasons. She will add depth at the forward position.

Perhaps the most significant addition to the post will be junior Monae Baker, who joins the squad after two years at UPJ. Baker aver-aged 12 points and six rebounds per game last season with the Mountain Cats and im-mediately becomes a viable option down low for the Lady Raiders. Her size and strength should produce similarities to the impact that former Lady Raider Shanna Oaddams had for Shippensburg.

Freshman Ashley Giedemann is a native of Washington Township, New Jersey. She is a 5-10 forward who hopes to provide a solid scoring touch this season.

sChedULeShippensburg opens its season on the road at Shepherd before hitting the hardwood inside Heiges Field House for two tough regional games against Wheeling Jesuit and West Lib-erty in the annual Wolf ’s Bus Lines Classic.

lauren beckley (2006-10)

Shippensburg was picked to finish fourth in the PSAC Eastern Division preseason coaches poll ahead of Cheyney, Bloomsburg, East Strouds-burg, and Mansfield. West Chester was picked to win the East, while California (Pa.) was predicted to win the West.

Unfortunately, SU slid one spot lower, Blooms-burg jumped two spots higher, and the Lady Raiders were eliminated from the playoffs on the last game of the season with an infuriating loss at Cheyney.

The lack of a postseason appearance, however, does not mean that the season did not have its share of memorable and historic moments.

SU started the year competing at the Disney Division II Tipoff Classic in Buena Vista. The Lady Raiders hung tough with three solid opponents, facing Stonehill, Southern New Hampshire and Northeastern State.

In the home opener against Shepherd, Shippensburg forced 24 turnovers to achieve a 72-63 victory over the Rams. Lauren Beckley earned her first PSAC East Player of the Week award of the season after dropping 30 points, nine rebounds, three assists, three blocks and three steals in 35 minutes of action.

She earned the award for a second consecutive week after Shippensburg’s impressive 76-70 overtime victory over Philadelphia. Beckley had reached a double-double just four minutes into the second half and finished with 25 points and 11 rebounds, including a pair of free throws that forced the extra session. Kerry Conroy earned PSAC East Freshman of the Week honors for her performance in the game, total-ing 13 points, five assists and three offensive rebounds.

After a 5-2 start, Shippensburg had some struggles on the road, dropping games against No. 10 Cal and a quartet of tough WVIAC opponents. During the trip to West Virginia Wesleyan, a massive snowstorm beset the region that stranded the Lady Raiders in hotels for two days.

At the end of the West Virginia trip, Beckley became the ninth player in PSAC history to reach 2,000 career points after a 25-point, 10-rebound performance against West Virginia State. The team got back into some rhythm in early January with a 69-66 road victory over Slippery Rock in a game that featured 28 lead changes.

Perhaps the most impressive win of the first half was historic for a number of occasions. Shippensburg fired on all cylinders in a 68-54 victory over IUP in a game that saw Beckley become the all-time leading scorer in the history of the program, surpassing Stacey Cunningham-Dellinger. Beckley earned PSAC Eastern Division Player of the Week honors for the third time after the 30-point, 18-rebounds performance against the Crimson Hawks.

In the conference opener against Mansfield, Beckley became just the fifth player in PSAC history to achieve 2,000 career points and 1,000 rebounds. She had 21 points and 11 rebounds in a 62-39 win.

One game later at East Stroudsburg, junior Kasey Gardner became the 17th player in school history to surpass the 1,000-point mark. She finished the game with 20 points and was the team’s leading scorer.

The play of Caitlin Bamberger was high-lighted with a PSAC East Freshman of the Week award after she achieved her first career double-double at Kutztown (11 points, 10 rebounds) despite coming off the bench. In the two games of the week that she appeared off the bench she totaled 14 points and 16 rebounds.

A statement game occurred in late January when Shippensburg reeled off a 20-0 run in a dominant 80-44 rout of Bloomsburg, a squad that made the PSAC Tournament. Gardner (16 points, 10 rebounds) and Bamberger (10 points, 10 rebounds) each had double-doubles as the team recorded its most assists (24) in a 212-game stretch.

After that win, and a wild overtime win over Cheyney, Gardner received her first PSAC East Player of the Week award after totaling 40 points and 18 rebounds in the two victories. She added 24 points, eight rebounds and just one turnover in 47 minutes against the Wolves.

In early February, Beckley was recognized by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as a 2009-10 First Team Academic All-American for the College Divi-sion of District 2. It marked the second straight year that she was recognized with this award.

Shippensburg’s trip to Mansfield was also affected by snow – as the Lady Raiders were forced to spend an extra night in their hotel because of travel conditions. The mood was pleasant, however, as A convincing offensive performance in the first half and a near triple-double by Gardner highlighted a 73-53 win over the Mountaineers. Gardner had 28 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.

After an 86-66 win over East Stroudsburg in which Beckley and Gardner combined for 63 points, the Lady Raiders dropped a tough road decision at Millersville but remained in the thick of the playoff race.

Then, the record happened.

Needing some key victories, Beckley had one of the best games of her career, scoring an impres-sive 43 points to complement 15 rebounds in a 72-67 road win over Bloomsburg. Beckley became the conference’s all-time leading scorer in the contest, needing 17 points in the game to reach the record. She had already broken it before halftime.

In the next game, SU played the game of the season, thrashing Kutztown 87-75 behind 38 more points from Beckley and 29 from Gard-ner. It was a season-high in points for the Lady Raiders. Beckley earned her fourth PSAC East Player of the Week award for her efforts in the two victories.

season Review

However, the last week did not transpire the way that Shippensburg had hoped. An agoniz-ing overtime loss to West Chester, 85-80, featured a career-high 20 rebounds from Beck-ley and a career-high 11 assists from Conroy. Then, the aforementioned Cheyney game ended the season.

In her career, Beckley scored 2,407 points through 113 career games and ranks 15th all time in Division II. She is the only player in league history to win a conference player of the year award in both divisions. She ranked sixth in the nation in points per game, eighth in the nation in free-throw percentage (an SU record 88.7) and 18th in the nation in rebounds per game (10.1).

As a senior, she was named a Women’s Basket-ball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II State Farm Coaches’ All-American, Division II Bulletin All-American, Daktronics First Team All-American and the PSAC Eastern Divi-sion Player of the Year. She was also named to the PSAC Winter Top 10 squad for the third consecutive season and is the first SU athlete in history to win the Top 10 award in every eligible year for one sport.

Gardner was an All-PSAC Eastern Division First Team player and Daktronics Atlantic Region Second Team selection. Her offen-sive prowess combined with Beckley to form one of the most dangerous scoring tandems in Division II. She scored 566 points in 30 games this season, an average of 18.9 points per game, while shooting 46 percent from the field and making 51 three-pointers. Her scoring performance ranks 10th in school history for the most points in a season. She led the team in field-goal percentage (.458) and three-point percentage (.359).

Her performance was instrumental in more ways than just scoring. Gardner played the most minutes of any player (1,102) while leading the team in offensive rebounds (61) and steals (59) while also ranking second on the team with 87 assists. Overall, she averaged 6.9 rebounds per game, the second-best on the team.

Additionally, senior Sheila Wasser was rec-ognized with a NCAA Division II Degree Completion Award after a national committee selected her on the basis of academic perfor-mance, athletic achievement and involvement in campus and community activities.

The Division II Degree-Completion Award program helps student-athletes who have exhausted their athletic eligibility with tuition to complete their undergraduate degree. Wasser will be completing her degree in elementary education while seeking a minor in coaching.

AWArdS And reSulTS

Originating in 1951 to administer and pro-mote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences.

The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. In 1980, the PSAC was reclassified to NCAA Division II.

The most recent enhancement came during the 2008-09 academic year when the PSAC expanded for the first time in its rich history, adding full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post.

All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Penn-sylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level.

Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 42 NCAA team and 228 individual title winners.

While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,200 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s.

Although all 16 current institutions are mem-bers of Division II, eight league schools also compete at the Division I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 118,000 students and claim over 670,000 alumni, including 430,000 who reside in Pennsylvania.

The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a com-missioner, two assistant commissioners and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

The Shippensburg University women’s basketball team has a long and proud tradition that dates back to the early years of this century. The women’s basketball team was formed during the 1902-03 academic year and played two games. The Red and Blue traveled to Carlisle to play the Dickinson varsity and lost 6-4. One week later, in a return engagement on the Shippensburg campus, Shippensburg registered its first victory, defeating Dickinson 6-2.

The following year women’s basketball was relegated to intramural status. Philosophically, physical education for women emphasized participation and shunned the male model which gave more importance to competition.

It was not until the 1921-22 academic year that Shippensburg reorganized the basketball team and began competing again against outside competition. The team was coached by Claudia Robb for two seasons and the Evelyn Van Duzer for three years.

In 1926, the Pennsylvania legislature granted Shippensburg and the other normal schools the authority to award bachelor’s degrees and Shippensburg became a four-year college. The age of intercollegiate athletics officially began that fall.

That year the women’s basketball team was coached by Esther Henderson, who was a proponent of the philosophy emphasizing participation. The schedule was scaled back to three games in 1927 and 1928. In 1928-29, basketball was relegated to intramural status again.

However, on the eve of World War II, that philosophy was undergoing changes. The war itself accelerated social change including women’s physical education. During the war teams comprised of Shippensburg’s best intramural basketball players were organized and sent to compete with other schools in Central Pennsylvania in what were know as “play days.” Usually one day a year was set aside for field hockey and basketball games played at another school or hosted by Shippensburg. Organized schedules between schools spanning weeks and months were not widespread and did not exist at Shippensburg. The intramural program was still prominent and 16 basketball teams existed, encompassing a sizeable percentage of the female student body.

In 1943-44 the women’s basketball team was re-established under Coach Robb and a couple games were played. The following year four games were played.

The 1947-48 season was the beginning of Shippensburg’s first basketball dynasty. Again, Esther Henderson was named coach. Led by freshmen Shirley Fordney and Marty Stroup, Shippensburg went 7-1. The team lost its first game to an industrial league team, the Fairchild Aircraft Cargoettes, but then swept over seven collegiate opponents. The following year, with coach Eleanor Wright at the helm, the team was undefeated, but had one tie. The season ended with a 7-0-1 record. (Basketball rules for women did not allow for overtime periods until the 1953-54 season).

Fordney and company went 7-1 the next season and then in 1950-51, with Esther Henderson again coaching the team, the Raiderettes enjoyed an undefeated and untied season with a 6-0 record. Fordney averaged 21 points per game.

Henderson coached the rest of the decade and had an outstanding team in 1952 with a 5-0-1 record and a 6-0 team in 1956. She retired following the 1961 season and ended her career with a 59-28-4 record for a winning percentage of .670.

In 1962, Gwen Baker took over as head coach and guided the team until 1980. The Red and Blue began another dynasty in 1965-66 and compiled a 28-2 record in four seasons. Shippensburg beat Penn State four straight years and Maryland twice. The 1969 team, led by Sandy Stewart, went 10-0 and beat teams by the average margin of 23.3 points. After ten straight wins in 1969, the Lady Raiders won their first five in 1970 for a 24 game winning streak, that still stands today.

Congress passed Title IX in 1972 and Shippensburg began to increase its efforts to achieve gender equity. The basketball schedules began to increase along with scholarship aid and the level of competition.

The 1977-78 basketball team was one of the best of that era. Forwards Dorothy Fichter and Kristi Miller, and center Linda Virgens led the team to a 13-5 record and a berth in the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) tournament. It was Shippensburg’s first taste of post-season competition. Fichter led the team to a 13-9 record in 1980 and a berth in the first annual Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference women’s basketball tournament. Baker retired after the 1980 season with a record of 150-67 for a .691 winning percentage.

The 1981 team, with Fichter and freshman guard Stacey Cunning-ham grabbing headlines, went 14-4. Cunningham was the premier player at Shippensburg in the 1980s. She set numerous school and national records, including most free throws made in a game with 21 against West Liberty in 1982 and scoring average with 29.9 points per game in 1983. That NCAA Division II scoring record was not broken until 1990. Cunningham was invited to a try out for the 1984 Olympics and finished her career with 2,057 points, a mark that still stands today. She averaged 23.1 points per game for her career.

In 1983-84, the team moved from Henderson Gym to Heiges Field House. Led by Cunningham and point guard Mary Endsley, Shippensburg went 18-9 that season and finished second in the PSAC tournament. Cunningham was named first team All-America by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).

After Cunningham graduated, the team entered a period of decline and was not revived until the arrival of Dave Smith at the helm. Gradually building respectability for the team, the Lady Raiders received their first bid to the NCAA tournament in 1995. Led by guards Tracy Spencer and Melissa Swartz, Shippensburg topped UDC 87-81 in the first round but lost to eventual region champion Mercyhurst.

In 1996, Shippensburg achieved one of its highest pinnacles of success. The Lady Raiders won their first PSAC championship with an 87-67 triumph over Slippery Rock and then won the NCAA Division II East Region championship. Shippensburg beat Salem-Teikyo 79-68 in the regional final.

Advancing to the Elite Eight tournament in Fargo, North Dakota, the underdog Lady Raiders with Spencer and Swartz in the backcourt, and Ann Svensson, Jessica Bobiak and freshman Ashley Totedo starting in the front court, defeated Wingate 78-64 in the national quarterfinals.

Shippensburg faced second-ranked Abilene Christian in the semifinals. The Wildcats had a 30-1 record and were led by Jennifer Clarkson, the Division II Player of the Year. Spencer and Swartz tallied 26 and 23 points, respectively and Svensson grabbed 10 rebounds as the Lady Raiders pulled off a major upset with an 84-81 win. Shippensburg advanced to the championship game and a national TV audience on ESPN2. Shippensburg lost 104-78 in the title game to North Dakota State.

In 1997 Shippensburg continued to dominate the PSAC. The Lady Raiders, led by Swartz and Totedo, won their second straight PSAC title and finished the year with a 25-5 record. Shippensburg’s season ended in the regional semifinals with a loss to High Point. Totedo became Shippensburg’s second WBCA first team All-American.

In 1998 the Lady Raiders won their third straight PSAC championship and added a NCAA East Region championship to their laurels. With only one starter returning to the lineup, the Shippensburg got off to a rough start, going 8-3 in the early part of the season. Then the youngsters, sophomore Julie Sutch and freshmen Christa Cline, Vickie Mikesic and Janette Pieczynski, began to jell, putting together a 20-game winning streak. The Lady Raiders became the first PSAC Western Division team to win all 12 conference games in a season.

After winning the regional crown they advanced to the Elite Eight but lost in the quarterfinals. The team went 28-4, and Totedo earned All-America honors again. In six pressure-filled PSAC and NCAA tournament games she averaged 24 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. She was the MVP of both the conference and regional tournaments.

In 1999 Shippensburg won its fourth straight PSAC title and Totedo earned All-America first team honors for the third straight season. She is the only player in the NCAA to combine 2,000 points, 1,400 rebounds and 300 blocked shots in a career.

In 2000, Shippensburg became the first PSAC team to win five straight conference championships. All five starters, Pieczynski, Cline, Mikesic, Tamaura Woodson and Sutch averaged in double figures. The Lady Raiders were upset in the regional semi-final game the following weekend.

In 2001, Shippensburg put together one of its finest seasons in team history. The Lady Raiders finished the season with a 28-5 record and won the PSAC championship for the sixth year in a row with an 86-71 win over California. Janette Pieczynski tallied 25 points and was tournament MVP. The following week Shippensburg won the East region title (third time in six years) and advanced to the Elite Eight.

Shippensburg defeated Delta State 70-65. The Lady Raiders fell 76-67 to North Dakota in a thrilling semi-final game. Center Jessie Gordon scored 24 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Cline was PSAC West Player of the Year. Pieczynski and Mikesic were named first team All-Conference.

In 2002 Shippensburg engaged in a rebuilding season and achieved many accolades. The team finished the year with a 20-9 overall record, marking the eighth season in a row that the Lady Raiders won 20 or more games. The team also competed in the NCAA Division II tournament for the eighth year in a row. Head Coach Kristy Trn was named PSAC Western Division Coach of the Year for the second season in a row.

In 2003 the Lady Raider suffered through a losing season with a 13-15 record, but earned a PSAC tournament berth for the ninth year in a row, compiling a 6-6 record in the conference’s Western Division.

Shippensburg ended the 2004-05 season with a 17-10 record, including a mark of 8-4 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division. Sixth-year head coach Kristy Trn was faced with the challenge of replacing two 1,000-point scorers from the 2003-04 team and two All-PSAC Western Division selections in Katie Bray and Emily Swingler.

The Lady Raiders qualified for the PSAC Tournament in the 2006-07 and the 2007-08 seasons while Lauren Beckley emerged as one of the team’s best players in history. Beckley was the PSAC Rookie of the Year in 2007, the PSAC Western Division Player of the Year in 2008 and the PSAC Eastern Division Player of the Year in 2009. She finished her career as the PSAC’s all-time leading scorer.

Julie Sutch (1996-2000)

SHIPPENSBURG 80, PITT-JOHNSTOWN 70

Christa Cline scored 19 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead Shippensburg to an 80-70 triumph over Pitt-Johnstown. All five of Shippensburg’s starters scored in double figures. In addition to Cline, center Jessie Gordon scored 16, guard Vickie Mikesic had 15 and guards Janette Pieczynski and Katie Bray scored 14 each. Shippensburg led 42-34 at halftime after building a 34-20 advantage with 5:12 left in the first half. In the second half the Mountain Cats steadily attacked the Lady Raider lead and narrowed the gap to 71-70 with 3:13 left to play. Shippensburg finished off with a 9-0 run. Mikesic hit one of two free throws and then hit a short jumper. Pieczynski stole the ball and missed a layup. Cline got the rebound and passed to Bray, who was fouled. Her pair of free throws put the Lady Raiders in control with a 76-70 lead with 47 seconds left.

NCAA East Region Championship • March 10, 2001 at Shippensburg, Pa.

SHIPPENSBURG 76, BLOOMSBURG 75

Vickie Mikesic made two free throws with five seconds left to give Shippensburg the edge over Bloomsburg 76-75. Bloomsburg had taken a 72-71 lead with 46 seconds left on a layup by Jen Bryan. Shippensburg regained the lead as Steph Rothery passed around a defender from the top of the key to an open Christa Cline under the basket. She made the layup to put Shippensburg on top 73-72 with 20 seconds left. Spinelli missed a jumper with six seconds left and Shippensburg’s Katie Bray collected the rebound. She was fouled along the sideline by Bryan who drove her out of bounds and to the floor. Bryan was called for an intentional foul. Bray hit the first free throw but missed the sec-ond. Shippensburg retained possession because of the intentional foul. Mikesic was fouled and hit both free throws to boost the lead to 76-72. Bloomsburg had a chance to take the lead at the end but Bray stole the ball only to lose the handle and turned the ball over with two seconds left. Stephanie Straup hit a three pointer at the buzzer to cut the lead to one. Rothery was the high scorer with 19 points. Cline had 16 points and seven rebounds, Pieczynski scored 14 and Mikesic 13.

National Quarterfinal • March 21, 2001 in Rochester, MN

SHIPPENSBURG 70, DELTA STATE 65

Forward Christa Cline and point guard Vickie Mikesic scored 16 points each to lead Shippensburg to a 70-65 victory over fourth ranked Delta State (Miss.). Cline paced the Lady Raiders with 10 points in the first half and then Mikesic, who was benched for 11 minutes in the first half due to foul trouble, tallied all 16 of her points in the second half. Delta State jumped to a 6-1 lead to start the game. Shippensburg did not get its first field goal until 15:35 left in the first half when Janette Pieczyn-ski stole the ball and raced for a layup. That basket initiated a 13-1 run that gave Ship a 13-7 lead with 11:38 left. The Lady Raiders led 32-28 at half-time. In the second half, the Lady Raiders went on a 12-4 surge to build a 44-32 lead at 15:23. Delta State narrowed the gap to 61-55 but Cline hit a base line jumper off an assist from Mikesic to break the momentum.

National Semifinal • March 22, 2001 in Rochester, MN

NORTH DAKOTA 76, SHIPPENSBURG 67

Shippensburg lost to North Dakota 76-67 in a wildly exciting game. The Lady Raiders fell behind 50-26 at halftime but staged a dramatic come-back narrowing the gap to six points with 9:30 left in the game (55-49). Shippensburg was trailing 12-10 with 14:20 left in the first half when North Dakota went on a 17-2 run that boosted its lead to 29-12 with 8:39 left. Theresa LeCuyer, the NCAA Division II Player of the Year, and Becky Moen increased the lead to 50-24 with 20 seconds left. Ja-nette Pieczynski hit two free throws after she was fouled at the buzzer in what would prove to be the beginning of the Lady Raider surge. In the second half, it was Shippensburg’s turn to dominate. Shippensburg went on a 15-0 run to narrow the gap to 52-45 and silence the wildly-partisan crowd of Sioux fans. North Dakota went back up by nine and Ship’s Janette Pieczynski fouled out at 9:02. Undaunted Shippensburg cut the lead to six again and the score was 63-57 at 6:58. Mandy Arndtson hit a crucial three-pointer sparking a Fighting Sioux 7-0 rally giving North Dakota enough cushion to hold onto the lead.
