“Veni, Sancte Spiritus.” El relato de Lucas del primer Pentecostés en los Hechos de los Apóstoles es fascinante. “Veni, Sancte Spiritus.” Today’s Luke’s account of the first Pentecost in the

Acts of the Apostles is fascinating. Luke’s report does not dwell on the events of fire, wind and noise that most of us associate with Pentecost; rather, his account puts emphasis on the experience of the devout men and women who are in Jerusalem from every nation under

heaven. After a rather brief description of the unusual extraordi-

nary phenomena of that day when they were all gathered together, Luke goes into a rather lengthy description of the people who were there —the devout men and women from every nation under heaven. It’s a large crowd; there are Jews from every nation, in addition there are visitors, there are also converts to Judaism, from every nation they have come. They have come to Jerusalem for the festival that celebrates the revelation of God to Israel. For Luke that is really, really important, because no festivals or celebra-tions live very long if they are nothing but recalling the past. What keeps them alive is that there is in the bosom of every memory some hope that maybe it will be true again. So, they come with a yearning, with a seeking, with an asking to Jerusalem. Then they heard the Galileans speaking foreign languages, so that each one of them —from ever nation under heaven, hears the apostles really preaching in their own language about the marvels of God. The miracle taking place in front of them is the reversal of the tower of Babel experience. In one sense this shows forth the seeds of the Church as one holy, catholic and apostolic —the universal Church. The nations under heaven are all present on the occasion for the first proclamation of the gospel in witnessing to the dead and risen Christ. What does this mean? Well, that the gospel is universal, that it is for all the people of the world. All the nations of the earth are present when the proclamation of the gospel begins, which means that all nations of the earth are not just the destination of the gospel; but they are also the point of origin of the gospel. What happened on the first Pentecost in Jerusalem continues to happen to Christians throughout the world today, not in such a dra-matic fashion but with the same significance and implications for our daily lives as disciples of Jesus Christ. On Pentecost, the Holy Spirit empowered the disciples of Jesus Christ to praise God in many languages that they had not learned in the ordinary manner (Acts 2:5-13). Symbolically, this miracle rein-forces the multilingual, multicultural, multiracial mission of the church. Unfortunately, it seems that in general the church has not lived out its multilingual multicultural mission because we are still often divided according to language, race, and ethnicity. Pentecost challenges all of us to examine our own attitudes and calls us to reject and repent of any prejudice that may exist within us; Pente-cost also calls us to open our hearts to all people, even and espe-cially to those who do not share our language and culture. So Pentecost is literally a very down-to-earth event, an expres-sion of the defeat of sin and death, and the proclamation of God’s victory. The real marvel of the event is that the Holy Spirit continues to work through us, and in us in our world. The Spirit was there from the beginning at creation and before, and has delighted in his work with humanity ever since, above all in the work of Christ the Lord, and is there working in and through us in our world today. This down-to-earth event offers us an opportunity to con-sider how we live our discipleship every day. The gift of the Holy Spirit does not rule out difficulty, suffering or human effort. So, today we marvel in the gift of the Holy Spirit, and have to accept the way it is given, to be worked out in history, in a very human way.

Ve tu vida Pregunta para los niños: ¿Cuándo has escuchado tu voz interior o tu conciencia guiándote a hacer lo que es correcto? Pregunta para los jóvenes: ¿Cuándo has sentido el Espíritu Santo en tu vida? Pregunta para los adultos: Hable de las veces en las que sintió el poder del Espíritu, ya sea dándole las palabras justas, ayudándole a comprender un dilema, o de otras maneras. What single word or phrase catches your ear or touches your heart? Look into your life Question for children: When have you heard your inner voice or conscience guiding you to do what is right? Question for youth: When have you felt the Holy Spirit in your life? Question for adults: Share about times when you felt the power of the Spirit, giving you the right words, giving you insight into a dilemma, or in other ways. Activities for the week Take these activities to further reflect: Gather as a family this week to celebrate Pentecost. Explain that with the coming of the Holy Spirit, we celebrate the call we have to proclaim the Good News. Remind everyone in the fam-ily of this responsibility by greeting each other saying: "As the Father sent me, so I send you." Sometimes we need help and guidance to live as Jesus taught us. For your family prayer this week, pray for the gift and guidance of the Holy Spirit. Use this prayer: “Come Holy Spirit! Fill our hearts with the power of your love.” Talk about each of the gifts of the Spirit: Wisdom, Under-standing, Right Judgment, Courage, Knowledge, Reverence and Wonder and Awe in God's presence. How do you see these gifts at work in your family? Go on a family outing and fly a kite together. Talk about the power of wind. After the experience, discuss the power of God’s Spirit in the lives of family members.

May 20, 2018 It is fitting on this Pentecost Sunday that the Scripture passages speak of the works of the Holy Spirit in the early Christian com-munity, as described in the Acts of the Apostles, and how the works of the Spirit are still present to us today. In St. John’s Gospel, Jesus gives his disciples the gifts of the Spirit, peace, and the power to forgive sins. In his First Letter to the Corin-thians, St. Paul encourages the faithful to live in unity and to appreciate each member’s gifts, service, and works granted to them by the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as one body in Christ. As Christian stewards, what do we bring weekly to the Eucha-ristic table through our God-given gifts of time, talent, and trea-sure to build up our parish communion — to build up the Body of Christ?

STEWARDSHIP—SHARING GOD’S GIFTS We want a few more

Ushers — Hospitality Ministers! Ushers extend hospitality by greeting and welcoming Mass attendees at the Church entrance ways. They assist attendees as needed with finding a seat, are responsible for passing around the collection baskets, and at the end of Mass are responsible for distributing the weekly bulle-tin. In addition, during communion, they assist the eucharistic ministers by pointing out those who cannot proceed through the communion line and therefore need communion brought to them. The goal of the usher is to provide an orderly environment for the community during our celebration of the Mass. Please consider joining the Usher Ministry.
