LACF | FAPC _ ANNUAL REPORT 2016

Vincent Asselin C.Q., FCSLALACF | FAPC President

MissionThe mission of the Landscape Architecture Canada Foundation (LACF-FAPC) is to promote the ideals and values of the profession of landscape architecture. Individuals, as well as groups and organizations that are involved in our profession share these values. The principal objective of LACF-FAPC is to support research, communication and scholarship that reflect these ideals.

Since it’s beginning in 1988 and in part, thanks to the generous contribution of the Frances McLeod Blue legacy, LACF-FAPC has received donations in excess of one million dollars to date. At the end of 2016, the Foundation’s assets exceeded the half million-dollar mark for the first time and stand today at $620,000. These assets reflect donations made to specific funds and given by individuals, Landscape Architectural firms, aligned professions, component organizations of the CSLA and general membership. Over the last 28 years, the Foundation has awarded over 125 grants and scholarships totaling more than $475,000. The Foundation has also provided financial support to students, organizations and professionals in numerous disciplines, as well as to the CSLA and its component organizations for special projects. The outcome of these grants has served to recognize the role of landscape architects, while at the same time acknowledging other contributors who, combined, have created awareness of the importance of landscape in Canadian society.

Summary of 2016 Activities

MembershipThe Foundation’s membership reached 110 members in 2016. Any person giving a minimal amount of $100 is considered a member and has the right to vote. Any person giving less than $100 is considered a friend. Members and friends are invited to receive our electronic newsletter and are recognized in this Annual Report for their donations, by category of giving. (See Annex).

Increasing Donations – A New PlateauTotal donations continued to increase in 2016 given continuous efforts by the Board Members. These efforts included a reverse auction conducted at the CSLA conference in Winnipeg, new fundraising initiatives for partnered scholarships, the annual Campaign of Fel-lows ASK and the Governor General event. Finally and importantly, SALA contributed funds of $50,000 to the Foundation. This endowment fund will continue to be directed towards the annual SALA Academic Award. In total, LACF received $162,000 in donations and attained a new plateau.

First edition of the Governor General’s MedalIn September 2016, the profession celebrated the first investiture of the Governor General’s Medal in Landscape Architecture. Celebrating a lifelong contribution to the profession, the first GG Medal was awarded by the Honorable David Johnston to Madame Cornelia Han Oberlander at Rideau Hall on September 20, 2016. For more than twenty years, the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects and component associations have been working relentlessly towards establishing this National Award.

In the remarkable setting of Rideau Hall, a ceremony full of dignity and warmth celebrated Cornelia’s many achievements by awarding her the first GG medal. In

partnership with the CSLA, the Foundation took the opportunity to celebrate Cornelia with a fundraising reception held at the Château Laurier Hotel. LACF thanks the CSLA Council and Executive Director, Ms. Michelle Legault, for an exceptional event organized in such a short time. The funds raised will be used to enhance the Foundation’s Annual Grants Program.

Campaign of FellowsThe 2016 Campaign of Fellows, under the guidance of Mr. Alan Duncan, COF president, and supported by Wendy Graham of our Board of Directors and past president of the College, raised more than $16,000. However, this does not include the significant amounts contributed by Fellows (and their firms) to the various other fundraising activities over the year. Total contributions by Fellows once again topped $50,000 or approximately 30% of total funds received. The Foundation remains indebted to the CSLA College of Fellows, who since its establishment has repeatedly supported LACF activities and fundraising, making it possible to meet our goals.

Policy on Scholarships and Bursaries In 2016 we reviewed our Policy on Scholarships and Bursaries and moved forward implementing our extended Scholarship Program that aims to establish one Scholarship per accredited program in Landscape Architecture in Canada. After in-depth deliberation, the

committee, formed by Vincent Asselin, Karen Gresley Hamre, Ed Versteeg, Wendy Graham together with Ron Middleton, Peter Kreuk and Don Hester, developed a renewed scholarship policy that was formally endorsed by the Board.

One of the primary goals of this policy is for LACF to partner with academic programs, component associations, or other interested parties, to ensure that each accredited program in Canada receives an annual scholarship. The Foundation is planning a 3-year transition period during which we hope a permanent endowment fund can be established for each of the existing programs.

LACF Andre Schwabenbauer National Award Beginning in 2016, the LACF Andre Schwabenbauer National Scholarship is to be awarded to a deserving student in each of the 6 accredited LA programs. Once the new partnered scholarships are in place, the policy recommends enriching the Andre Schwabenbauer award into an extra-significant national award.

The six LACF Andre Schwabenbauer National Award winners for 2016 were: Tasha Sangha (University of British Columbia MLA),Vincent Tang (University of Manitoba MLA),Andrea Graham (University of Guelph BLA),Julia Taucer (University of Guelph MLA),Rachel Salmela (University of Toronto MLA), andNora Topalian (Université de Montréal MLA).

Congratulations to all!

LACF/ AAPQ 50 LACF in collaboration with the AAPQ, launched a fund-raising campaign during the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the AAPQ in October 2015. With contributions of $6,000 in 2016, the total donations

to date are nearing $20,000. A sustained effort will be required to complete the endowment, but we are confident that we will soon reach the minimal amount targeted and foresee the inaugural award in 2018.

LACF/UBC Scholarship in Landscape ArchitectureA similar campaign took place in British Columbia, under the direction of Peter Kreuk and Randy Sharp, for an LACF Scholarship at UBC. The endowment is now com-plete, with over $45,000 raised. We sincerely thank all the donors and, in particular Peter Kreuk, for their gen-erous support. The inaugural scholarship was awarded to Caylee Dyck in March 2016. Congratultions!

Peter Klynstra Memorial Scholarship The Peter Klynstra Memorial Scholarship, established by APALA in memory of Peter Klynstra, grew to $27,000 in 2016 thanks to generous contributions. The 2016 Peter Klynstra Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Emma TarBush, Master’s Candidate at the University of Guelph.

SALA Academic AwardSALA’s contribution of $50, 000$ to LACF is to be managed as a sustainable endowment scholarship fund for students from Saskatchewan. An agreement has been made and signed; LACF to manage the funds, SALA to make the recommendation for the award. Since 1986, a $1,500 scholarship has been awarded annually to a deserving student who remains a resident in Saskatchewan. The student scholarship award will continue to be presented by SALA representative Ingrid Theissen.

A partnered approach to establishing Scholarships Based on these positive experiences, LACF intends to extend a partnered approach to scholarships and collaborate with other associations, programs and inter-ested parties in order to establish Scholarships at each of the accredited LA programs in Canada.

Endowment funds have been created for the four re-maining LA programs in Ontario and Manitoba: Guelph BLA, Guelph MLA, Toronto MLA and Manitoa MLA. LACF is seeks the support of Members / Champions to lead the fundraising campaigns for these scholarships. At least one Champion per program is needed to guidefundraising efforts. LACF thanks Peter Kreuk for his leadership on the Scholarship initiative and the constituent associations and university programs for their ongoing support. There is still a lot of work to be done, but the results are promising.

Frances McLeod Blue FundAs it does every year, LACF-FAPC made a $1,000 contribution to the Frances McLeod Blue Fund, in memory of her generous contribution to the Foundation; this donation allows students to catalogue the numerous documents in the Macklin Hancock collection housed at the University of Guelph.

2016 Grants ProgramOur annual scholarship program, chaired by board member Faye Langmaid, has always attracted great interest. A total of $ 20,000 in various grants was awarded once again this year. Thanks to the efforts of a jury representing the various trends in the profession and a high level of competence, the winners of the 2016 awards were selected and full details of the winning proposals can be obtained on the lacf.ca website (Portfolio & Archives section) at the following link: Http://lacf.ca/node/315 .

We congratulate the recipients of these grants, and we are very grateful to the members of the committee and jury, Faye Langmaid (Chair), K. LeGresley Harme, Daniel Chartier, E. Versteeg, Natasa Juck and John Zvonar.

Communications Committee As always, Wendy Graham, Chair of the Communications Committee (supported by Faye Langmaid, Nathalie Walliser and volunteer Laetitia Chastel) worked tirelessly to update and maintain the website and develop better communication tools aligned with LACF developments. Our electronic Newsletter is now being published regularly and contains information regarding the main events and activities of the Foundation. A considerable effort is being made to translate the content and update information as the Foundation matures. We aim to bring more and more content online and to make as many projects supported by the foundation accessible and visible to all. These steps will be spread over a few years and according to the available financial resources.

Treasurer After more than 10 years of loyal and continuous services, our treasurer, Don Hester, has given up his place to Peter Kreuk who will now act as Treasurer of the Foundation. We warmly thank Don, and his assistant, Ms. Kari MacKin-non who, for many years, managed our finances with skill and dedication. Their continued support during the transition period, allowed Peter Kreuk to move easily into his new role. Thanks also to Eha Naylor and the other members of the Board for their assistance and guidance.

The new additional funds and the increasing fundraising activities have put a lot of pressure on this position. A new and improved format for reporting our financial situation has been set in place and LACF has also implemented a more efficient system for issuing tax receipts and thank you notes thus facilitating our administrative tasks and offering a better service to our members. The administrative assistance of Judy Bennett from the office of Durante Kreuk Ltd, where the Treasurer’s office is now located, is greatly appreciated.

Strategic Planning and Fundraising The strategic plan and the fundraising policy are two other points with which the Board has been involved since 2015. The strategic plan has been adopted and we hope to finish the Fundraising Policy in early 2017. If all goes well, both of these documents will be submitted to the next Annual Members Meeting in May 2017.

The development or updating of our strategic plan, under the leadership of Cathy Sears as chair of the committee (supported by Ron Middleton, Eha Naylor and Faye Langmaid), is a very important document that will assist the Foundation in all its undertakings. Cathy and all the members of the committee worked hard throughout the year to collect and integrate the sectoral actions of all our working groups to prepare a global framework for our actions and orientations.

This committee is working closely with the fundraising committee chaired by Ed Versteeg and composed of Vincent Asselin ex officio, Peter Briggs, Sara Jane Gruetzner, Randy Sharp et Peter Kreuk ex officio.

These two policy documents will be the basis through which orientations are determined, and fundraising activities developed in the years to come. The two policies will provide strategic direction to the Foundation and assist us in planning our activities as well as guiding us in our financial planning. In addition to the Chairs of these committees who have devoted their time and talents in building these documents, numerous Board Members have greatly contributed in moving this work forward.

Conclusion These many activities require a sense of dedication and outstanding professionalism, and I would like to thank all members of the Board personally. The year 2016 was also marked by the departure of our Executive Director, Ms. Paulette Vinette. We take this opportunity to thank her for her dedication and continuous support to LACF over the years and we wish her well in her other ventures. On another note, LACF welcomes to Ms. Sara Jane Gruetzner, who joined the Board of Directors at the Winnipeg Annual Meeting. Her experience and enthusiasm will be a great addition to our board.

In closing, we would like to take this opportunity to express our great appreciation to all our members and donors who, through their generous financial and time contributions, enable the Foundation to continue its mission. We hope that we can benefit from your support in 2017 and for many years to come.

Respectfully submitted,
