P A G E T H R E E P I Cways to stand out. We’ve seen people advertise in the airport, but it’s very expensive and I’m not sure people see those displays

mounted on the walls. But everybody has to go through security. Other airports have done this and we heard about that, so we told the folks in Nashville and they were way up for it. It’s another revenue source for them.” Featured were Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert and Chris Young, Jake Owen and Kenny Chesney, and Tyler Farr and The Henningsens. “It’s a captive audience,” Overton says. “Everybody has to use at least one and we estimate we’ve gotten six million impressions over the eight weeks.

“It really accomplished what we wanted. I remember going through security myself and watching people notice the ads for the first time, or turn the bins around to read them right-side-up. And we’ve gotten more people commenting, from managers to songwriters to artists. Texts, calls and comments – people really have noticed. I sent Brad Paisley a photo of a bin that he was in and said, ‘If you flew commercial like your label head and millions of other travelers, this is what you would see in the security line at BNA.” Although the initial run ended late last month, travelers shouldn’t be surprised to see future Sony images in the bins ... perhaps around high-travel events next year. Overton relishes the non-standard approach. “We had our artists on the room keys at the MGM and The Signature in Las Vegas at the last ACM Awards,” he says. “So we’re always looking for unique places to create general awareness, rather than just sticking ads on buses. I heard that Scott Swift, Taylor’s dad, got a key with Carrie Underwood on it and went back to the front desk to ask for a blank one. We like that.” –Chuck Aly

Cumulus Media Networks Exec. Producer/Writer Donna Britt discusses her most influential artists, concerts, songs and albums:1. Cal Smith/Country Bumpkin & Merle Haggard/Okie from Muskogee: Two of the first songs I ever remember hearing. I had no idea what they were talking about, but I knew they were stories and I couldn’t wait to grow up

and understand them. They painted pictures.2. Boston, Pine Bluff, AR, late ‘70s: My first big concert was festival seating with lots of hazy air around me. I was captivated, and that’s when I knew I wanted to be associated with music. 3. Bruce Springsteen, Memphis, early ‘80s: I was in the very top row and terrified of falling, but that fear was overcome by complete connection with the music for four solid hours. The best show I’ve ever seen. Still. 4. Hank Williams, Jr.: Some of my first country shows in the early ‘80s were his. He was rowdy and fun and a big reason why I fell back in love with country music after my teenage rock ‘n’ roll rebellion. 5. Jamey Johnson, The Guitar Song: I was going through some tough changes in my life, and listening to those amazing songs made me cry. They got me over a pretty big hump. 6. Marty Stuart, The Pilgrim: It’s a concept record that tells the story of a man and his travails. Reminded me of what I loved about country music, which is the storytelling. • A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Taylor Swift, Red. I’ve loved all the singles, but I have not sat down and listened to the whole thing.• An album you played or listened to incessantly: Juice Newton, Juice and REO Speedwagon, Hi Infidelity. • One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, “Same Love.” This may be an uncomfortable song for some to hear. But it’s about love and acceptance. I pray for that for all of us. • One item in your music collection you’d rather not admit to enjoying: Captain & Tennille and The Bee Gees.

dress rehearsals before heading out [so] we can make suggestions regarding song choices, body language, clothing and the all-important banter between songs. Sometimes their backup is a rented player that they just met a couple of days before. Programmers can tell.” A comfortable artist makes a big difference. “Media training helped,” Thompson says. “Nothing can completely prepare you, but as long as you can carry a conversation and be proud of the music you are putting out, you’re fine.” Radio Rules: For stations, simple hospitality goes a long way. “No. 1 is show up,” Moran says. “Don’t stay in your office while the act that traveled a long way and at great expense sings for the sales staff. Many times there is lunch for staff involved in a visit, and a word to staff about not bolting before the performance would be good. “The audience and the room also play an important role in the success of a visit,” he continues. “The break room with people walking in and out, using the microwave, people on their smart phones and such chokes the life out of the moment. Many stations have high quality performance spaces these days and it is much appreciated by the act and the promotion person. And I like it

when the programmer brings listeners into the room. It often can make the new act less nervous and give the programmer a peek at how the audience might feel about the act or a certain song.” Big Personalities: Dealing with the cantankerous sort is simpler than it appears, according to Harnen. “If you lead with your talent and your heart you

can’t go wrong,” he says. “If someone is going to be rude or difficult, there is nothing you are going to do to change them ... so don’t even try. Let them go on in their own miserable world while you hold your head high and rock!” Columbia Dir./National Promotion RJ Meacham tries to manage artists’ expectations. “When artists come face-to-face with a standoffish or stone-faced programmer who doesn’t react or engage with them, it can be disheartening,” he says. “It’s our job to make sure they walk into those stations knowing what to expect and that it’s not personal.” That awareness was helpful for Thompson. “You’re never going to connect with every single person you meet out on the road,” he says. “At the end of the day, you just want them to stop, listen and hopefully enjoy the music you are putting out there. I did everything that was asked of me and then some.” Road Stories: Even the best preparation and execution can’t keep some visits from going bad. “Not sure this is fit for print, but I once took a girl group in to see a PD,” Meacham says. “They did their set in the conference room – all good. Afterwards, we’re in the lobby talking and he says, ‘Wait! I gotta show you this,’ runs to his office, and comes back with a little stuffed penis. With eyes. And balls. None of us knew what to say. There was nothing in the conversation preceding that moment that suggested that whipping out the stuffed d*ck was appropriate. The look on the girls’ faces was priceless. I did leverage that into an add, though.” Moran was present for the awkward “Radar Love” rug-cutting performance mentioned by WMIL/Milwaukee’s Kerry Wolfe in part one of this story. “At first I was embarrassed,” he admits. “Started to sweat, if I remember correctly. Then I glanced back at Kerry and we both just laughed. In those situations, knowing the

programmer well really takes the edge off the awkwardness. The ones that really felt awkward were the female staff members who the act tried to get to dance with him. I mentioned in the parking lot that maybe he save that particular performance for the clubs ... at closing time ... when everyone is hammered.” Ultimately, it all comes back to caring. “A radio tour is hopefully just the start of what will be a long journey with those stations – radio shows, first time through on a tour, coming back through on their own tour,” Meacham says. “This is just the first date. Assuming the music is right, it’s the connections an artist makes with radio that will help them to ultimately succeed. You want PDs and MDs rooting for you, pulling for you, wanting to see you win.”

NEw CoUNTRY AIRCHECK/mEDIAbASE REPoRTER wEIGHTS

There are the new weights for Country Aircheck/Mediabase Reporters and Activator reporters, based on audience estimates from the Spring 2013 Arbitron ratings. Weights for stations in PPM markets use a three-month average of April-May-June 2013 AQH Persons. The weights are calculated using this formula: Market rank is multiplied by 10 and then added to the station’s AQH Persons. A station’s weight is determined by dividing the adjusted AQH by a number that is 10% of the leading Country station’s AQH (in this case WKLB/Boston’s 29,900 total AQHP and, for Activators, WQXK/Youngstown’s 11,290 total AQHP.) This calculation assigns a weight for each panelist on a 1-10 scale. These new weights are effective with this week’s Mediabase Country chart as printed in Country Aircheck.
