A Comprehensive BLI Laboratory Evaluation AUGUST 2014

An excellent overall performer in BLI’s tests, the Samsung Xpress M2835DW demonstrated flawless reliability over the course of 6,000 impressions, in addition to producing very good print output and providing a variety of environmentally friendly features that can help users save money. BLI technicians cited crisp text, clean lines and dark, consistent solids. A key strength of the unit is its robust mo-bile print package. Integrated NFC technology makes mobile print-ing easy–users simply tap their NFC-enabled phone on the printer to connect it to the device so they can print their job. SyncThru Web Admin Service enables administrators to manage and monitor Samsung and compatible devices on the network. Information about third-party hardware is manufacturer-dependant, which is typical. Administrators can select a device in the fleet management utility to change settings and view meter counts, among many other actions.

FEEDBACK TO WORKSTATIONS VERY GOOD

Printer Status provides pop-up messages for error conditions and print job status. The window contains an estimated percentage toner gauge and links to order supplies and access the user guide. Note that if multiple Samsung print drivers are loaded on the same PC, the unit must be set as the default printer to get feedback.

Users can proactively access SyncThru Web Service and the fleet management util-ity to view consumables status. Remaining life of toner is presented as a percentage. Paper supply is indicated as Ready when there is paper in the drawer; when the drawer is empty Warning is indicated and when clicked on states “All trays on the system are empty.” The status of the fuser and various rollers are given with text (impressions used/rated yield). Users can click on the Printer Status button in the drivers to see toner status.

EASE OF NETWORK SETUP VERY GOOD

Physical setup of the unit, which ships fully assembled, is typical of devices in this class. Only one person is required to lift the unit from the box and place it in the desired loca-tion. Packaging materials aren’t excessive. A standard cartridge with a rated yield of 1,200 impressions comes preinstalled but must be taken out to remove a seal.

The CD launches when inserted in the drive, and the automated installation routine will have users up and running in minutes. The PCL and SPL driver (a single combined driver; users can switch between PCL and SPL drivers from the printer properties screen), Easy Printer Manager, Samsung Easy Wireless Setup and user guide were installed in seven clicks. The port is created and the IP address is assigned using DHCP, both automati-cally.

While no utility is provided on the CD to enable cloning of settings or remote installation of drivers onto multiple PCs, administrators can accomplish these tasks via SyncThru Web Admin Service, which can be downloaded for free from Samsung’s website.

PRINT DRIVERS EXCELLENT

The unit ships with PCL 5e/6 and SPL drivers for various Windows and Mac operating systems, as well as environments that run Linux.

The Favorites tab provides preset settings such as Eco Preview, two-sided, 2-in-1 and booklet printing.

The PCL and SPL drivers are identical: Only one “driver” is installed, but users can toggle between them via the Device Options tab of the driver properties. Duplex, orientation and layout can be selected from the Basic tab; users must navigate to the Paper tab to choose quantity. Graphical changes in the driver occur when settings such as duplex are enabled.

On the Graphics tab, users can select resolution mode and change the setting for darkness. Toner-save mode helps extend the life of the cartridge.

The Eco tab allows for “green” features, such as duplex and toner-save mode, to be chosen from a single screen. The simulator provides estimated savings for carbon dioxide, energy and paper when using these settings. By checking the “Start Easy Eco Driver before printing job” box on the Basic tab, users can apply “green” features and, among other tasks, remove unwanted text and images without affecting the original document, all of which helps save money.

Print speed is tested using BLI’s Monochrome Test Original with 6% page coverage. The test page is printed in a quantity equal to double the vendor’s rated print speed for the device in each mode tested (e.g., if the vendor’s rated print speed is 20 ppm, 40 pages are printed). The unit’s print speeds were tested using the PCL driver.

1:2 12.4 14.0 42.7 44.6

Efficiency is tested using a 10-page black document. BLI obtains the overall efficiency by averaging the efficiency ratings (derived by dividing the tested speed of the device by the rated speed and then multiplying by 100) for each run length (1 and 5 sets). The unit’s efficiency was tested using the PCL driver.

Job Stream | Competitive Average

SPEED IN PPM PERCENT OF RATED SPEED

PCL 25.5 23.7 87.8 73.0

BLI’s job stream includes Word documents, Outlook email messages, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint, HTML and Acrobat PDF files, totaling 19 pages. This test simulates the type of traffic a typical device might experience in a real-world, multi-user environment. All of the files are sent to the device as a group, at which time the stopwatch begins; timing ends when the last page of the last file exits the device. Job stream efficiency is determined by the percentage of the rated speed at which the device operates when producing real-world jobs. The closer the rate is to 100%, or if it exceeds 100%, the more efficient the device.

EASE OF USE VERY GOOD

Adjusting the drawers is straightforward. Users simply pull open the drawer using the front handle. The width guides move in sync once users release the guide’s locking mechanism. Spring-loaded ramps lock in place when paper is loaded. If there is a change in paper size, users do not have to confirm this at the control panel.

Misfeeds can be easily removed from any of four access points on the machine. The status LED turns orange when a misfeed occurs.

To replace the toner, users press a button to open the front access cover. Once the cover is open, the user lifts the toner cartridge up and pulls it out. Users slide the new cartridge into the machine and push it down to lock into place. There are no instructions on the the inner door. However, instructions are provided in the box.

Compared with competitive devices, users will have to replace supplies an average number of times.

The control panel consists of hard keys for WPS, Eco mode, Cancel and Power. The status LED changes color to indicate current device conditions (green for ready or printing, red for errors or warnings).

Projected 36-Month User Interventions (Over 36,000 impressions)

0 8 12 16

Tested Model 12

Competitive Average 11

User interventions are calculated based on BLI’s average tested toner yields (using the ISO 19752 test target, printed in a semi-continuous mode), as well as the manufacturer’s rated yields for other consumables (drums, developer units, waste containers, etc.). BLI calculates the total number of supplies and maintenance parts that would be required to output 36,000 pages (assumes 1,000 pages per month, which is an average volume for this class of device, over three years). Each individual cartridge or other consumable is counted as one intervention, so the black, cyan, magenta and yellow cartridges being replaced once count as four interventions. Long-life maintenance parts, such as fuser kits and rollers, and paper supply replenishments, aren’t included in BLI’s calculations. Depicted scenario is for illustrative purposes only. The actual number of interventions over three years will vary based on a number of factors, including (but not limited to) page coverage, run lengths, usage patterns, periods of inactivity and calibrations performed.

FEATURE SET VERY GOOD

The device features NFC technology, which won a BLI Outstanding Achivement award and lets users simply tap their NFC-enabled smart phone to the unit to print, scan or fax documents using Samsung’s Mobile Print app.

The free Samsung Mobile Print app lets users wirelessly print directly from their mobile devices without the need for additional drivers. Moreover, the device is Google Cloud Print ready, allowing users to print from anywhere via mobile devices including smart-phones, tablets and laptops.

Samsung AnyWeb Print is a free app that allows users to collect and print web content in a customized layout.

Standard, non-upgradable memory capacity of 128 MB is above average compared with the memory capacities of legal-size monochrome laser/LED printers in this class.

Non-upgradable paper capacity of 251 sheets, including the single-sheet bypass, is competitive with the standard and maximum averages of competitive models.

Media handling from the drawers (up to 43-lb. bond) and bypass (up to 58-lb. bond) is better than average and competitive, respectively.

Standard automatic duplexing contributes to less paper waste.

TONER YIELD GOOD

Based on an average of two cartridges, tested toner yield is competitive with the aver-age compared with legal-size monochrome laser/LED printers in this class tested to date. The average tested yield exceeded the declared specification.

Tested Toner Yield | Competitive Average

Tested Impressions 3,510 3,895

Rated Toner Yield 3,000 3,554

Rated Drum Yield 9,000 7,811

Tested impressions is based on an average of two cartridges using the ISO 19752 toner yield test original. Some devices in the competitive group employ a cartridge that includes the toner and drum in a single component. In those cases, rated toner yield is used as the rated drum yield in calculating the average.

VALUE VERY GOOD

Compared with legal-size monochrome laser/LED printers in this class tested to date, the unit’s price is lower than average, while supplies cost per page is competitive, result-ing in a slightly lower than average TCO over a three-year life cycle. Combining cost of ownership with the unit’s flawless reliability performance, above average print output, its range of “green” features that can help users to save money and mobile printing capa-bilities (support for NFC technology, Samsung Mobile Print app), the Xpress M2835DW offers very good overall value.

Test Environment: This product was tested in BLI’s 10,000-square-foot U.S. test lab, in an environment monitored by an Extech RH S20 Digital RH/Temperature Recorder and Honeywell Model 61 Seven-Day Temperature/Relative Humidity Chart Recorder. All products lab tested by BLI are powered by dedicated circuits that are protected by ESP (Electronic Systems Protection, Inc.) surge protectors to prevent transient power and communication disturbances from having an impact on equipment under test.

Test Equipment: BLI’s dedicated test network, consisting of Windows 2003 and Microsoft Exchange servers, Windows 7 workstations, 10BaseT/100BaseTX network switches and CAT5 cabling.

Test Duration: Products are tested for two months, a portion of which consists of a durability test during which the product is run at half of its manufacturer-rated maximum monthly volume, with varying daily test volumes designed to replicate real-world use over an eight-hour workday. This variable schedule includes a mix of various-size documents, simplex and duplex modes, and a mix of short, moderate and long run lengths, and on/off cycles, throughout the day.

Tested Configuration: Samsung Xpress M2835DW base unit

Test Procedures: The test methods and procedures employed by BLI in its lab testing include BLI’s proprietary procedures and industry-standard test procedures, which include a BLI-developed variation of ASTM’s 1318-90 Test Method for Determination of Productivity using Electrostatic Copy Machines. In addition to a number of proprietary test documents, BLI uses an industry-standard KATUN test original for evaluating black image quality and test suites from Quality Logic to evaluate applications compatibility. Besides a visual observation under a Graphiclite D5000 Standard Viewer, color print quality is tested using a color test target, which is read using the X-Rite Eye-One/iO Color Spectrophotometer, and samples are analyzed using the CIE XY Chromaticity Diagram. Furthermore, density of black and color output is measured using an X-Rite 500 Series Densitometer. Georgia-Pacific Spectrum Multi-Use 20-lb. bond is used in the tests, 10 percent of which is recycled paper containing 30 percent post-consumer content. Image quality is tested using Georgia-Pacific Printing Paper (96 brightness, 22-lb. bond). Units are tested for compatibility on Windows 7 with Microsoft Office Suite 2010, as well as Adobe Acrobat Reader 10.0.
