There has been a steady decline in the amount of
waste generated per household since 2009, while
recycling has remained relatively stable.
In short, people continue to recycle as much, but
throw away less than in the past.
To further improve our performance,
the MRC is considering new initiatives such as:
• Implementing a new organic waste collection
• Building an ecocentre
• Automating waste collection using appropriate bins
A number of initiatives have already been implemented to enable you reduce the amount of garbage you throw away. Read on to learn more.

Regional electronic material recovery program
Recycling
Since April 2012, residents of the 11 municipalities of
the MRC have access to a container to deposit their
electronic and computer material for recovery. 60.64 Waste recovery is funded under the
Extended Producer Responsibility
(EPR) Regulations.

Subsidies for baby washable diapers
Since 2009, 500 babies have used washable diapers under our program, thus keeping away 3,500,000 disposable diapers (or 500 tons of waste) from landfills.
(Statistics based on data from Zero Toxique, p.130, 2008)
The program will continue in 2013; for more information, visit the following website: coucheslavables.mrcroussillon.qc.ca
Subsidies for compost bin purchase Since 2008, households that have taken
advantage of this program have
successfully recycled over 250 tons of
organic material.
(Statistics based on data from the
GAP Manual, 2003)
The program is continuing
in 2013; visit the following website:

Toward the revalorization of organic material!
Valorization
55% of the contents of all garbage is made up of organic material.
A social and economic issue
QUEBEC AIMS TO:
• Ban the disposal of organic material in
landfills by 2020
• Reducing GHG emissions (Kyoto)
THE MRC DE ROUSSILLON AIMS TO PROMOTE:
• Sustainable development
of its region
• Responsible management of residual material
55% Organic material
An environmental issue Disposing of organic material in landfills contributes to:
air pollution: land pollution: water pollution:
accounts for 7% of
greenhouse gas emissions in
Quebec.
is a contamination hazard with the production of leachate, or
“garbage juice".
Biogas: for future valorization!
This is a natural process based on the degradation of organic
material by micro‐organisms. It involves no loss, no
pollution and no odour. This is complemented by a
composting stage. We would be pioneering the introduction
of this technology in America, which has already proven its
worth in Europe.
We could therefore:
• Reduce the disposal of organic material in landfills
• Reduce transportation by recycling the material locally
• Transform our organic materials into:
‐ Biogas, a green energy
‐ Compost, to fertilize our soils
With the future implementation of a third bin and a new collection program, each of us can make a difference!

New waste collection PROCEDURE
Wrap mattresses and bedsprings for collection
Matresses and bedsprings left for collection should henceforth be
wrapped in a plastic bag properly sealed with adhesive tape or sealed in any
other way.
Why? Mattresses may contain bugs, fleas,
contaminated body fluids or diseases. This new measure
aims to minimize contamination hazards among the
population and protect the health and safety of workers
handling such material.
A few tips • Check with your retailers if there is any possibility of returning your used mattress.
Some do it for free.
• If you purchase a new mattress, use its plastic cover to wrap the old one.
• As a last resort, purchase a plastic tarp in the hardware store. Do not throw me away, pass me onto a friend! I am recyclable!
