We are fast approaching the festive season so October meeting is reallythe time to get your name down on the booking sheet to attend thisyear’s Xmas party event at Mt Pleasant. We have 13 children attendingthus far which I understand will be the biggest kids group for some time.Maybe they are all coming to see the Magician who tells me he willentertain both big and small. Remember also to pay your $5 permember to the Treasurer. If you are not likely to be at the Octobermeeting then fire a note off to Peter Harrison at [email protected] he can add your detail.

On the trips front we are now starting to see a few weekend type tripswhich is great for those who work and can only spare limited time. Ourtraditional Beachport Robe weekend is as usual the January LWE so getyour name down there also for what is a good weekend of sand drivingwith some great scenery.

Michael Brooks and I will be representing the Club in NSW in earlyNovember as guests of Toyota Motor Corporation Australia (TMCA). Wealong with the Presidents and Vice Presidents of the various State Clubswill be attending the pre-launch of the updated Prado 150 series. Wewill be meeting with the TMCA Chief engineer responsible for the LC200and 150 series as the new vehicle is put through its paces at the TLCCNSW property near Goulburn. More detail when we return

Finally if at Wayville over the 25-27 the October then don’t forget to stopby at the Clubs stand in the food court and say hello to our memberswho are helping to promote the Club.

I look forward to seeing you at the October meeting.

By the time you read this, the last practical training activity for the year willhave been completed. The club was at Morgan on the weekend of 12th –13th October. Next practical training is at Peake in March 2014.

There are still plenty on spaces on the future training events. I am a littlesurprised that we have only a few name for the theory weekend. We onlyrun this once a year, so if you miss this one, you will have to wait anotheryear to do it. It is a compulsory component of the training.

The DTU training committee will be meeting in a few days time to discussour options for accredited training. Hopefully I will have something to reportat the next club meeting.

The 4WD show is on from the 25th to 27th October. This is always a goodway to get recovery equipment plus other odds and ends at reduced prices.Ralph Abbot and Edmund MorriesEducation Officer Team

They are interested in driver training and wishto travel to the Simpson Desert.Treasurer (Linley Edwards) Nil Report Membership (Simon Currie): Nil ReportDelegates (P Harrison): Nil Report.Guest Speaker: Paul Bryant from SAPOL.Darryl Royans introduced Paul who has been a Police

Officer for 27 years mainly in the Traffic Division andPaul’s topic is “Driver Fatigue”.Paul – (If there is a large group of TLCC Membersattending the Thebarton Barracks on 20th October wewill offer another date as well.)30% of all fatalities on our roads this year have beenfatigue related. What is Fatigue? Fatigue is mental or physical exhaustionthat stops a person from being able to function normally.Unfortunately we do not think much about this when weget behind the wheel of a car. What is a micro sleep? A brief and unintended loss ofconsciousness. Yawning and sore eyes are often signs offatigue as well as lane drifting which is a really bigproblem. This results in serious injuries. Why does fatigue cause crashes? Fatigue increases thetime taken to react in an emergency. A fatigued driver willbe slower to notice oncoming hazards. Fatigue reducesyour ability to process information. Alcohol will have thesame effect as the above mentioned facts. Truck driversare ruled by the hours that they are permitted to drive –but tourists towing caravans will continue to drive formany hours.Out on the open roads reaction times are critical when itcomes to the unexpected, e.g., a roo stepping out in frontof your vehicle. At 60 km/h where the drive nods off for 4seconds, the effect is that the vehicle has travelled 64metres OUT OF CONTROL. Out on the open road thisproblem is exacerbated because you are travelling at100km/h and therefore you have travelled 100 metreswhere you did not know what was happening.Crashes due to fatigue are often more severe than othercrashes – you do not see it coming. (Paul showedpictures of various crash scenes, the emphasis was onhow fatigue could have been the cause of theseaccidents.)The TLCC have trips that often cover long distances. Doyou know your Club By-laws say “stop every two hours”.Trip Leaders have a responsibility to ensure that thedistance travelled each day is not excessive, e.g., toGoogs Track and return in four days. Where do you standas a Club if this kind of trip is advertised and a fatalityoccurs? Swop drivers, e.g., let your wife drive for a while. The questions asked after an accident are, were drugs oralcohol involved, was there something wrong with thecar, was fatigue involved? The signs of fatigue are thatyou start moving around in your seat, opening windows, turning up the music, rubbing your eyes, you start drivingslower or faster than normal. You can now travel long distances because of long rangefuel tanks and fuel economy, so drivers no longer have tostop to refuel. Therefore a driver needs to plan to takebreaks. If you are fatigued you will have a slower reactiontime and a reduced or inability to react in time fromdrifting that will occur. How do you combat fatigue?

Ensure that you get enough sleep. Many TLCC Membersare on prescription medication and you need to knowwhat effect that has on your driving and your fatiguelevels. Stop and rest every 2 hours. Please understand the signs of fatigue. If you can identifyany of those in your trips away, please do somethingabout it. Plan your rest breaks. We need to rest every 2hours not because we are fatigued but to PREVENTFATIGUE.Trips (Mike Barkway): Please refer to the Trips report onpage 5.Social (Pete Harrison): Please refer to the Social report onpage 6.Education (Edmund Morries): Please refer to theEducation & Training report on page 4.Trip Report: Cliff RothenbergGeneral comments – it was very interesting to see thatsomebody has actually read the By-laws set down by theTLCC. They came about from various scenarios that theCommittee had to face over time. I have led a lot of tripsand I suggest that trips should start where the bitumenends. That way there is no publicity about how people getto a certain point. Club Members should be aware thatvehicles should travel further apart than 200metres. Theyshould also be aware that after lunch is often the timewhen people feel fatigued, so an increase in radio talk isoften useful.I have just spent the last two weeks in western NewSouth Wales. NSW have been very proactive inadvertising camping locations and what they offer. Wetried one of the camp sites on the Darling River on a nicewhite sandy beach and had the whole place to ourselves. The cost is $5 per person per night. There is often avariety of accommodation opportunities in these placessuch as the “shearing quarters”. NSW has producedtourist maps. Information Centres in NSW can provide acomplete set of maps. The maps have all of theinformation, such as the location of the Parks, where youcan fish, and much more. They are really good for tripplanners. There is a www site that will provide moreinformation.IPP( Ralph Abbot), Advertising (Paul Hoskins): (Apology)Publicity (Paul Hoskins)(Apology) Report given by DarrylRoyans. We need more helpers for the October 4WD and SABoating and Fishing Show is on 25th-27th October. Now theCommittee are saying that the Minutes will not beavailable until they have been ratified at the nextCommittee Meeting. Conservation Council - we have been a Member of theConservation Council and then it has been dropped –without Minutes coming out Members cannot makecomplaints about such issues.A Member has left the Club because she was advised tojoin a caravanning group. I thought that we were trying topromote Membership?Darryl – we ratify the General Meeting Minutes and theCommittee Minutes at the next meeting, they are notformerly endorsed as correct until this happens becausethere could be amendments. There is nothing sinister inthat procedure. However, we will discuss your complaintat the next Committee Meeting. I ask the Members present at this meeting to raise theirhands if they are interested in reading the CommitteeMeeting Minutes.Four (4) people showed interest in reading CommitteeMinutes.

DARRYL ROYANS’ 3 CORNERS AND SIMPSON DESERT TRIP

CHAPTER 2

Continuation of Day 5 to BirdsvilleThe afternoon was spent settling into the Caravan Park, washing, restocking supplies, and refueling. As timepermitted, a number of us visited the Museum at the old Mission, and the Burke and Wills blazed tree on theDiamantina. Dinner was the mandatory meal in the Birdsville pub following a beer in the front bar.

Oodnadatta to Birdsville on the map was theoretically 675 klms and the distance travelled varied a little per vehiclebut was generally 648 klms. (Go figure) The 100 series used 123 litres @ 18.9 litres per100 klms. Bluey used 113.2litres @ 17.49 litres per100 klms. and the Hilux used 89.1 litres @ 13.7 litres per 100 klms.

Day 6 - Birdsville to Arrabury 38 klmWe started another beautiful day with a photo shoot in front of the Birdsville pub and then to the bakery for morningtea supplies. Bring on our tea stop. Before leaving town it was down to the clinic to collect Greg who had torn theligament off his littlest digit the day before while unpacking and needed to have it splinted. We departed at0920hours, a little late, and headed for Betoota on the QLD. Development road, stopping for morning tea at “CuppaCreek” and then again at the “Big Snake” 158km East of Birdsville. This is a significant man made sculpture madeby thousands of coloured rocks at least 200 metres long on a steep hillside. We assume it is of a Dream TimeSerpent as the only signs anywhere are requests to “ keep off the artwork”.

By midday we had arrived at Betoota and managed to find our way into the abandoned pub. On the last tradingnight they had a huge party and the next morning the proprietor just walked out leaving everything as it was andvery much still is. Amazing! At 1245 we stopped for lunch at Deon’s lookout, which is named after Deon Brookfrom Birdsville. Deon was 20 years old when killed in a helicopter crash not far from the lookout in 1996. Sadly hisfather, a pilot, was the one who found the wreck during the search and rescue mission. It is a beautiful elevatedspot, albeit sad, for one can really appreciate the geography of the channel country from the elevation.

Mid afternoon found us at Haddon’s corner for our mandatory photo shoot and visitor book signing. We were on theroad again and trying to make as much distance as possible when our Leader picked up on his scanner that wewere soon to encounter 23 truck and trailer combos from a mining camp who were relocating. In amongst all ofthat we came across a Pajero in the middle of the road fully loaded minus its driver and passengers. It’s LH rearwheel completely missing.

By late afternoon we had stopped and retreated quite some way off the road for the night, about 10 klm. N. ofArrabury. (The junction to Cordillo Downs)

Refreshing dip in the springs - by Greg Royans

DARRYL ROYANS’ 3 CORNERS AND SIMPSON DESERT TRIP

Day 7 - To Innamincka 294 klmWe all awoke about 0630 hrs. with Darryl giving us an animated description of how Michael had saved the rubbishbag from a “wolf” (read dingo) during the night. By 0820 we were rolling to the sounds of Blue skies by WillieNelson again. What a wonderful way to start another beautiful day. By 0920 we had travelled the 27 klm. road intoCordillo Downs. A very rough track filled with gibber. Some of the reddest sand dunes you will ever see are alongthis road.

Cordillo Downs was 1st. leased in 1875 with its large and historic shearing shed built in 1883 and boasting 120stands by 1890. A record of 82,000 sheep were hand shorn in 1888. Mechanical shearing commenced in 1907.Morning tea was had in a classically beautiful tree lined creek on the way back to the main road. Stunning!

Just after 1 o’clock found us at Nappa Merrie and the Burke & Wills Dig Tree. As most people know ,Burke and histwo companions returned to camp 65, to find that the “waiting party” had left just 9 hours earlier. It is still hard tobelieve that after waiting for 17 weeks for their return they missed them by such a short margin on 21st April 1861.After returning to the main road we all agreed that the road in to the Dig Tree was the worst to date.

We crossed the Cooper at the B & W bridge, which was still under repair from the 2010 floods that had taken outthe approached. Before arriving at Innamicka we had to review our view on the Nappa Merrie road as the lasttwenty or so klms into Innamincka was far worse. At 1530 we arrived at the Town Common and by 1730 we hadrefueled, enjoyed ice creams, had showers, and had set up camp in time for happy hour at 1730. Dinner at the pubfollowed.

Day 8 - Innamincka to Coongie Lakes / Kudriemitchie 186 klmWe awoke to breathless, partly cloudy morning accentuated by a fiery sunrise over the Cooper. It was a leisurelystart at 0915 hour and off to King’s site where a rescue party found him living with the local Aborigines on15.9.1861

It was then off to Will’s Site where his body was found and interestingly journal notes indicated he died beforeprovisions had run out from sickness associated with malnutrition. Morning Tea was enjoyed at Policeman’s Waterhole a lovely tranquil and shady spot.

After resupplying and a visit to the Inland Mission hospital it was off to Coongie Lakes by 1200 hours. Not too farout of town we came across Ray and Beryl and Steve and Judy heading back from their working bee at

Kudriemitchie Out Station. After a roadside chat we were off again and stopped at Scrubby Creek for lunch with athousand flies. Not long after lunch we stopped to collect fire wood and repairs to David’s rear number plate that hadshaken loose and was hanging by its wiring. (It’s amazing how many applications 100 mph tape has.)

By 1515 we had arrived at Kudriemitchie, unloaded and headed out to the lakes. Reaching the lakes at 1615 we hadtime to explore the Cooper outlet into the lakes and the shoreline taking up a position on the Eastern sand hills toavail ourselves with the eminent sunset while enjoying and extensive happy hour. It was spectacular and a verysensory experience shared with great company.

DARRYL ROYANS’ 3 CORNERS AND SIMPSON DESERT TRIP

David was in his element with his camera and I’m sure he will delight in sharing his photos with club members.

We returned to the Out Station in the dark for another great meal. Darryl provided the much-anticipated puddingwith custard. Yes, he eventually found the custard, which was actually in the same box he had been going to eachmorning for his weet-bix.

The restoration work by the team was impressive and Darryl, Mike, Greg and Ben all enjoyed the comforts ofsleeping indoors.

Day 9 - Kudriemitchie Outstation To Cameron Corner 318 klmAfter breakfast and spending Some time on the river bank just below the out station we headed off again at 0815hours to the accompaniment to ‘blue skies” courtesy of Kate. Yes, after a rare cloudy day we were blessed again.

By this time it was retorted with “I want to sleep with you in the desert tonight. With a billion stars all around”, bythe Eagles, coming from “the fridge” and “I’ve been through the desert on a horse with no name “ by Americacoming from Darryl’s car.

Back in Innamincka we met up with Kate Buckley who had been doing some work with the “Friends of InnaminckaReserve”. She gave David, Kate and Michael a guided tour through the Inland Mission including upstairs.

After enjoying Latte’s from the shop we were off to Burke’s grave site where we observed a high water markersome 5 metres up a river gum and found some fascinating story boards on bush tucker. The hollow truth is thatBurke and Wills perished along this river in what the Aborigines of the day considered a food source, paradise.

By midday were heading south down the Northern Bore track, which was a great drive as the track was in goodcondition.

DARRYL ROYANS’ 3 CORNERS AND SIMPSON DESERT TRIP

After Bore No. 3 we turned east along the Moomba road stopping for lunch just short of the Qld. border. As wecouldn’t get permits to cross Bollards Lagoon we headed further east and took the Epsilon and Omicron road downto Cameron corner stopping for fire wood to support our planned roast dinner that evening.

We all enjoyed a beer at the Corner store and each of us donated $5 to the RFDS by tossing a $5 note with adrawing pin stuck through it and weighted by a 20-cent piece up into the ceiling. The ceiling was covered in $5notes.

By not being tempted to take the first valley along the dog fence between the dunes and taking the third wemanaged to get a sensational camp which really topped off our last bush camp for the trip. Even better with campoven, lamb roast dinner, a cloudless night and millions of stars. What more could you ask for?

Day 10 - Cameron’s Corner To Broken Hill 500klmWe awoke to overcast skies, packed up and headed for the showers block next to the Corner Store. Well, I haveused them on previous trips and they haven’t changed. Our trip has been book-ended with the best facilities atCoober Pedy and the worst at Cameron’s Corner. At least we left clean for the long day ahead. After the group photoat the Survey Peg we crossed into NSW for Silverton, which was our proposed destination. Passing through theSturt Nat. Park we saw huge numbers of Kangaroos and spotted a magnificent eagle that had been feasting on acarcass.

Travelling down through Waka and onto Hewart Downs we made progress to darkening skies and too many gates toopen and re-close. Fortunately at one of the gates Ben spotted a bulge on the inside wall of David’s right rear tyre soall hands on deck for a tyre change. Onwards to Hawker Gate where the road then followed along the dog fence andthe SA and NSW border. Stopping for lunch we realized getting to Silverton that night would have meant gettingthere quite late, so we diverted southeast and proceed to pick our way thru the maze of tracks in the direction ofBroken Hill. The Weather continued to deteriorate and a major detour had us searching through the various tracks toget us out on to the Tibooburra – Broken Hill road. We had been driving in light rain for most of the afternoon withmassive black clouds chasing us from the west.

We managed to hit the black top before the roads got too slippery and proceeded down to Broken Hill where we alltook cabins in the Caravan park for the night. Dinner was enjoyed at the Musician Club where we all reflected on awonderful trip and thanked Darryl for a wonderful trip, which was planned well from the start.
