The award was presented on 6 April 2016 in Bangalore. Ramesh Kekunnaya has won the Pediatric Glaucoma and Cataract Family Association’s inaugural award for the best paper in the field of pediatric cataract and the ‘AAPOS Best of Show Award’ at the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) 2017 meeting at Nashville, USA, for his abstract ‘Primary Intraocular Lens Implantation in Infants Less than 6 Months: A Long Term Outcome’. Ramesh Kekunnaya has been elected to the ISA (International Strabismological Association) Administrative Council as a Council Member, 2018 - 2022. Research Fellow Shahna Shahul Hameed has won a travel fellowship to present her work ‘Effect of Hyperglycemic and hypoxic stresses on the primary cultures of retinal neuron and glial populations a model system to understand the role of glia in diabetic retinopathy’ at the upcoming ARVO (Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology) 2017. Aravind Roy has been acknowledged by Cybersight for delivering a maximum of four Cybersight Live lectures in the first quarter of 2017. Awards & Honours e 37 th Low Vision Awareness Program (LAP), held 31 March - 1 April 2017, in collaboration with the India Vision Institute, had 47 delegates from across India, Ghana, Mozambique and Nigeria. In addition to didactic lectures, there was a hands-on-session on the basics of assistive devices, multidisciplinary low vision rehabilitation services and daily living skills for people with low vision. A couple of clients employed with Wipro shared their experience on how they have benefited from comprehensive low vision rehabilitation intervention. #149 Muthukuru Vision Centre in Nellore district, Andhra Pradesh was inaugurated on 22 April 2017. Capital support is by RayBan Sun Optics India Pvt Ltd and operational support by Sri Bollu Murali Mohan. #150 Kothuru (Indukuripeta) Vision Centre in Nellore district, Andhra Pradesh was inaugurated on 22 April 2017 by Sri Somireddy Chandra Mohan Reddy, Hon’ble Minister for Agriculture, AP. Other dignitaries present included Sri Polam Reddy Srinivasulu Reddy, Member of Legislative Assembly, Kothuru; Sri Kaliki Kodandarami Reddy, Managing Trustee, Sri Shirdi Saibaba Rural Welfare Trust; and Sri Yerramreddy Parandhama Reddy, Trustee, Sri Shiridi Saibaba Rural Welfare Trust. Capital support for the centre is by RayBan Sun Optics India Pvt Ltd, while rent free premises and operational expenses are supported by Sri Shirdi Saibaba Rural Welfare Trust and Sri Kaliki Kodandarami Reddy and family. #151 Pedakurapadu Vision Centre in Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh was inaugurated on 27 April 2017. It is supported by RayBan Sun Optics India Pvt Ltd, with Sri Vunnava Gopala Rao providing the rent free premises. e Centre was inaugurated by Dr Kommalapati Sridhar, Member of Legislative Assembly, Pedakurapadu. Dignitaries present included Sri Nelakuditi Vara Prasad, Director, Dist Coop Bank; Smt Patibandla Sivamma, MPP; and Smt Chennupati Sudha Rani, MPTC. UK-India Researcher Links Workshop A four-day workshop, 20-23 April 2017, was organized jointly with the University of Sheffield, UK, as part of the Newton- Bhabha Researcher Links program, funded by the British Council and Royal Society of Chemistry. e workshop on ‘Application of innovative chemistry and biomaterials to treat corneas damaged by trauma, disease and infection’ had about 30 early career researchers from UK and India, and 9 national and international speakers.

Preventing Avoidable Blindness in a Remote Brahmaputra IslandDr G N Rao visited to the Chandra Prabha Eye Hospital in Jorhat, Assam, an LVPEI Partner Centre, 18-19 April 2017, to inaugurate the ‘Dr Jitendra Gopal Borpujari Memorial Centre for Community Ophthalmology, Education and Research’ and deliver the ‘Dr L C Dutta Oration’ on rural and universal eye health. He also visited Majuli Island in the Brahmaputra River and lauded the work being done by a Vision Centre in preventing avoidable blindness in the remote underserved area, a program run jointly by Operation Eyesight Universal and Chandra Prabha Eye Hospital.

Visitors & UpdatesAn ophthalmic slit lamp was installed at the secondary centre in Thoodukurthy - Kuchukulla Ramachandra Reddy Eye Centre - with support from Mr Pravin Kumar Tandlay, a philanthropist. It was inaugurated by Mr Chandrakant Tandlay and Mr Francis Warn, CFO, IAPB.

As part of National Fire Service Week, a mock fire drill was organized on 21 April at GMR Varalakshmi Campus, Visakhapatnam in coordination with Central Fire Station Department. N Surendra Anand, District Fire Officer and their team conducted the drill.

Continuous training program was organized, 20-22 April 2017, for the Opticals staff from across the network.

Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Program for Vision Technicians was organized at the Bausch & Lomb School of Optometry, GPR campus on 24 - 26 April 2017.

Mr Tej Kohli, Founder Kohli Ventures, visited Tej Kohli Cornea Institute (TKCI) at LVPEI, along with his family; 11 April 2017.
