apoxiomen – a cultural pearl

In addition to the tourist map of the world, Lošinj is included

in the archeological map of the world because a unique

ancient bronze statue dating back to the 2nd or 1st century B.C.

has been found in the blue underwater world surrounding

Lošinj, between the island of Vela Orjula and Lošinj.

The Croatian Apoxiomen, as the only large bronze statue

found on the east coast of the Adriatic is referred to, is the

most integral and best preserved one ever found in the entire

world. It was found in 1996 by a Belgian tourist. It was made

by an unknown author and its home is exactly where it was

found – in the Kvarner Palace on Lošinj.

However, Lošinj has plenty of other cultural heritage,

including Austro-Hungarian villas and captains’ houses,

monasteries, a fort, a basilica, ancient remains, museums,

churches and chapels containing true little art fortunes.

Visit the Town Museum in Mali Lošinj located in the Fritzy

Palace dating back to the 15th century, the Kula Museum &

Gallery in Veli Lošinj, and Osor, a museum town. There you

will discover traces of ancient villas, renaissance portals and

monasteries, and some Patrician crests on fronts of stone

houses accurately presenting what this 4000-years-old town

looked like in the past.

Don’t miss the votive chapel Annunziata in Čikat Bay, telling a

story of this island’s rich maritime history, its glorious captains

and their fleets. Learn about the lives of our famous seamen

You probably did not know that there were six shipyards right

here in the 19th century and that Mali Lošinj was the second most
