Most of our courses are held at the following venues:

Access Learning Centre, Richmond and Kingston Accessible

Transport (RaKaT), North Kingston Centre, Richmond Road,

Kingston KT2 5PE. The centre can be reached from Kingston on

the 65 route, bus stop Durlston Road. There is a limited number

of car parking spaces in the North Kingston Centre.

Richard Mayo Centre, Kingston United Reformed Church,

Eden Street, Kingston, KT1 1HZ, in the heart of Kingston-upon-

Thames, at the back of the main shopping centre and five

minutes walk from both the railway and bus stations.

MEFAS training centre is situated at the rear of the Malden

Centre, Cocks Crescent, New Malden KT3 4TA.

Directions will be provided to all venues at time of booking.

Prices

The prices are given for each course on its page and in the “at a

glance” section in the centre of this booklet. The first (lower)

price is for voluntary and community organisations with the

second price, where applicable, being for statutory organisations

who work with the voluntary sector. Priority will be given to the

voluntary and community sector organisations.

Commissioning in Kingston

Date: Thursday 22 November 2012

Time: 10am – 5pm

Who should attend: Staff or trustees who want to find out

about the process of commissioning and why they might want to

get involved in commissioning in Kingston and wider.

Course Overview: This course will introduce the concepts and

environment of commissioning and tendering, particularly in

Kingston, and bring participants up to speed with the processes

involved. The trainer will prepare the session in consultation

with local commissioners. By the end of the session, you will be

able to:

find out what is meant by the commissioning cycle and how

you can become involved

find out about the different levels of commissioning

understand the differences and their implications between a

contract, service level agreement and a grant approach

be familiar with what policies and procedures need to be in

place for an organisation to be able to write successful bids

explore how to tender in partnerships and consortia

practically work through PQQs to develop an action plan

Trainer profile: Simone Hensby, Executive Director of

Voluntary Action Camden, has 20 years of experience of working

in the sector at a local, regional and national level. Simone has

been a key partner to the development and delivery of

accredited courses, customised to meet the needs of the third

sector, in the areas of project management, commissioning and

tendering, strategic and operational management.

Date: Tuesday, 6 November 2012

Time: 10am – 4.30pm

Who should attend: any staff member/volunteer who wants

to find out how their organisation could use social media. The

course starts from the basics of how to use tools such as

Twitter and Facebook, so it is not appropriate for someone

who has been using social media effectively for a while.

Course overview: As a result of this course you will:

understand what defines social media and how people are using it every day

be able to plan how social media can have the biggest impact for your organisation

know how your organisation can use Twitter and Facebook

have gained an overview of other tools such as Flickr, YouTube and blogging

know how to assess new tools that appear

understand how to manage your social media with limited resources

know how to measure the impact of your social media

Trainer: Louise Brown works with charities and small

organisations to help them be more effective through the use

of technology. Before going freelance, Louise worked at the

National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) for over

five years. In that time Louise mostly supported organisations

with their use of technology but also worked in the areas of

collaborative working, governance, workforce development

and campaigning.

Dates: Thurs 13 September, Weds 14 November 2012

Time: 10am - 1pm

Who should attend: Organisations who want to set up a

website using the free and easy-to-use VOICE tool. Also

suitable for additional staff/volunteers from organisations

who already have a VOICE website and need an

introduction to the tool in order to update their site.

Course overview: The aim of the course is to set up a basic

website with a logo, contact details and information on your

organisation using VOICE. The course will cover:

Adding text, images and links to a page

Adding and ordering pages

Changing the look and feel of the site

Full support will be provided both prior to the course and

afterwards to give you guidance on planning and

maintaining a website that meets your needs, as well as

providing help with any technical issues.

Trainer: Sorrel Parsons is the Information and

Communications Coordinator for Kingston Voluntary Action,

and manages the Voice web publishing portal in Kingston.

She has been supporting voluntary and community groups for

9 years and has a strong understanding of the diverse needs

of the sector.

Who should attend: Organisations who already have a

VOICE website and want to develop it further, ideally people

who have already attended the Beginners course or have a

basic understanding of the VOICE system.

Course overview: The aim of the course is to introduce

advanced features of VOICE in order to increase

the functionality offered by your website. The course will

include:

Adding interactive applications to your website

Private Areas

Advanced Layouts

User and Member management

You will be contacted prior to the course to identify any

specific areas of interest so that the session can be tailored to

meet your requirements.

Support will also be available after the course, to ensure you

are able to continue to develop a website that suits your

needs.

You could start to reach individuals and businesses who want to give to local causes with your own webpage on Localgiving.com, a highly successful fundraising website.

Who should attend: Anyone with fundraising responsibilities. Knowledge of web technology is not necessary.

Course overview: A short information session including a Q & A with the experts will be followed by an intensive surgery to create your webpage. You will need to be registered and vetted with our partners London Community Foundation to attend the start-up surgery.

Information session 10am - 11am

An hour presentation and question and answer session will give you the chance to find out more about how to fundraise online and double your money with Localgiving.com match challenges.

Start-up surgery 11am - 1pm

Localgiving.com experts will support you to write the content for your page and get it up and running. Learn the tips and tricks for creating content that can lead to donations.

Trainer: Localgiving.com experts are experienced in supporting small, local community groups and charities to fundraise online.

Date: Monday, 17th September 2012

Time: 9.30am – 4.30pm (full day attendance required)

This course is developed in line with the HSE’s changes to the

First Aid at Work regulations. It is designed for organisations

where a risk assessment has indicated that a lower level of

First Aid cover is sufficient.

Who should attend: Organisations needing to qualify staff

or volunteers to take responsibility for a first aid emergency

and the first aid box in accordance with the Health and Safety

(First Aid) Regulations.

Course overview: Course comprising a minimum of 6 hours

of practical and theoretical training covering: responsibilities;

reporting; first aid hygiene; assessments; resuscitation;

angina; heart attacks; choking; bleeding; shock; seizures;

minor injuries and dealing with an unresponsive casualty.

Compliant with Health & Safety Executive regulations.

Trainer: Simon Hill, A registered instructor with Nuco

Training Ltd. Nuco Training Ltd is approved by the Health and

Safety Executive (HSE) to provide training and assessment of

candidates for First Aid at Work.

Assessment and Certification: On successful completion

of the course, the delegate will receive a certificate issued by

Nuco Training Ltd. Certificates are valid for 3 years under the

Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.

Who should attend: All employees, volunteers, senior managers, trustees and support staff

Course overview: This course provides participants with training in the basics of health and safety. Full course notes will be provided. At the end of the day there is a short, straightforward, multiple-choice test. This is an accredited course that will cover:

1. Introduction to Health and Safety legislation 2. Risk Assessment 3. Accident prevention and reporting (RIDDOR) 4. Computer safety (DSE) 5. Fire Safety 6. Manual Handling 7. Control of substances hazardous to health (COSHH) 8. Test

Trainers will adjust the course presentation to make it more relevant to your needs, depending on your profile and the services delivered by your organisation. Trainer: Carlton Training’s instructors are all qualified and experienced in their own subject areas and in providing high quality teaching to groups and individuals. Health and Safety courses are nationally recognised and accredited by the Royal Society of Public Health. Assessment and Accreditation: On successful completion of the test, participants will be awarded a Royal Society of Public Health (RSPH) Qualification – Fundamentals of Health & Safety in the Workplace.

Who should attend: This is a core ICT skill which everyone

will benefit from.

Course overview: Come and learn how to use Excel for

finances and explore some of its other uses such as analysing

data for monitoring.

We will cover:

Getting to know the Excel work environment

Setting up a spreadsheet, entering text and numbers

Using simple formulae to start number crunching

Sorting and filtering your information

Formatting your spreadsheet

Printing / viewing a spreadsheet

(Please note we will be using Excel 2007 at the training venue)

Trainer: Philippa Leary has worked in the voluntary sector

for last 10 years in ICT development and information and

communications. Currently a consultant IT trainer, Philippa

has taught the European Computer Driving Licence syllabus,

developed internet courses for digital inclusion and delivers

Online Basics, Excel and MS Word courses.

This course is a must for individuals that are sharing information by email and do not have a shared computer server, or those working at home or at various sites. Course overview: Come and learn about free and low cost online tools that will help you collaborate internally and externally with colleagues. We will be covering Track changes, Dropbox, Huddle, Google docs & calendars and Evernote. Following demonstration of the tools you will have the knowledge and confidence to start using them to improve collaborative processes. Trainer: Kate White has been managing and developing Superhighways for over 10 years and has a wealth of experience in voluntary sector use of ICT and a good understanding of the difficulties faced. Time: 10am - 12pm

Who should attend: Anyone responsible for gathering data

from beneficiaries and stakeholders. This course starts from

the basics and is not suitable for someone who has been

using online surveys for some time.

Course overview: Online surveys are a powerful and cost-

effective way to gather feedback about your organisation

from your beneficiaries and other stakeholders. You can use

surveys to evaluate levels of satisfaction with your services,

shape and plan future projects, demonstrate need to funders

and identify barriers to participation. By the end of this

session you will be able to:

Create a survey from scratch

Design questions that will gather the information you

Dates: Tues 23 October & Tues 27 November 2012

Time: 10am – 5pm

Who should attend: The course aims to equip participants

to introduce an outcome focus into their own organisation.

For this reason, organisations are encouraged to send two

people on the course, whether trustees, paid staff,

volunteers or a mixture.

Course overview: At the end of both days, the learners

will understand: what outcomes are and what they are not,

how to identify relevant outcomes for your work, the

benefits of having an outcome focus, simple ways to monitor

outcomes, methods for gathering outcomes information,

reporting outcomes, using outcomes information well, next

steps in implementing an outcomes approach; ICT tools you

can develop to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of

outcomes monitoring.

The course will run on two separate days, with a gap of four

weeks in between. Attendance on both days is

compulsory. During the gap you will be expected to hold a

meeting within your own organisation to consider

implementing an outcomes focus. You will be given the

materials to help you do this.

Organisational Risk Assessment & Management

Date: Tuesday, 4 December 2012

Time: 10am – 4.30pm

Who should attend: Trustees and Managers who need to

develop and manage a Risk Register.

Course Overview: Learn how to demystify Risk Assessment

and comply with Charity Commission requirements and RBK

Commissioning Standards. This course provides tools and

processes to help make Risk Assessment effective and

manageable.

At the end of the session, attendees will be able to:

understand why we need to identify and monitor an

organisation’s risks; understand and develop skills in

identifying what a ‘risk’ is; develop skills for assessing and

prioritising risks; develop skills for monitoring and reviewing

risk; and understand when to take preventative and remedial

action to avoid or minimise risk.

Through presentations, discussions and group exercises you

will learn what risk is and whose responsibility it is; how to do

risk analysis and compile a risk register, and how to develop a

Risk Management Strategy.

Trainer: Trainer: Marika Dalgliesh holds a Masters in

Business Administration and is a Member of the Charted

Management Institute. Marika has many years experience in

the Public, Private and Voluntary sectors and specialises in

Change Management and Leadership skills for better

organisational development.

Children & Young People Organisations

Network Meetings & Seminars

Network meetings will be held every three months in central

Kingston. They are a great opportunity to meet colleagues

from other organisations and to keep up to date with

developments at Kingston Council and the Local Safeguarding

Children’s Board. There will also be regular seminars on issues

such as child poverty, safer recruitment and participation.

Next meeting: Monday, 24 September 2012, 10am –12pm at

the United Reformed Church in Kingston.

Forums offer exciting new opportunities, interactive workshops

Time: 10am – 1pm

'Working together to Safeguard Children' (2010) places a

duty on all employers to ensure that their staff and

volunteers are competent and confident in carrying out their

responsibilities for safeguarding and promoting children's and

young people's welfare.

This includes ensuring that all relevant staff and volunteers

receive safeguarding children training.

Who should attend: This basic awareness training is aimed

at staff and volunteers in infrequent contact with children and

young people and/or parents/carers who may become aware

of possible abuse or neglect. It is also aimed at those in

regular contact or those who have a period of intense but

irregular contact with children and young people and/or

parents/carers and who may be in a position to identify

concerns about maltreatment.

Course overview: By the end of the course participants will

be able to:

gain some awareness about what constitutes child abuse

and how to recognise it

develop awareness about everyone's responsibilities

Date: Thursday 25 October 2012

Time: 10am – 1pm

Who should attend: Managers, Volunteer Coordinators,

Trustees or anyone who has responsibility for volunteers.

Course overview: It is always advisable to stay on the right

side of the law and it is important to carefully think through

what the legal position is on much of what you do as a

volunteer manager. This workshop will look at how your

organisation can keep its relationship with volunteers legal.

Who should attend: Managers, Volunteer Coordinators or

anyone who has responsibility for volunteers.

Course overview: Volunteer involving organisations and

volunteers are natural risk takers and effective volunteer

programmes cannot operate without taking risks. It is

essential that organisations control and minimise risk both to

volunteers and the organisation itself.

What risk will look like will be different in each volunteer

programme depending on how you involve volunteers and

the workshop will cover it from both organisation and

volunteer perspective. Topics covered will include:

Why assess risk within your volunteer programme

What types of risk can be associated with involving

volunteers

The process for assessing risk

Managing risk

The workshop will provide a natural follow on for anyone

who has already attended Volunteers and the Law.

Trainer: Pat Stanley is Go Kingston Volunteering Good

Practice Advisor, supporting organisations to develop good

practice in volunteer management. The project also includes

delivering a programme of good practice training of which

this workshop is part.

Making a booking

website www.kva.org.uk/events-and-training for a Word

version of the form.

Please either email completed booking form to

[email protected] or send it to Training, Kingston

Voluntary Action, Siddeley House, 50 Canbury Park Road,

Kingston KT2 6LX.

Once in receipt of your booking form, we will issue you with

an invoice.

In order to secure a place on the course you should send us

a cheque made payable to Kingston Voluntary Action.

All places will be confirmed by email or by phone at least 72

hours before the course starts and usually sooner than that.

Cancellation

The booking fee is refundable if the booking is cancelled no

later than 2 weeks before the course date.

Occasionally, KVA may have to cancel a course or change the

tutor, date or venue. If this happens, we will inform you

immediately. If you cannot attend the new date, we will

offer you a credit note or refund.

Book early to secure a place on the training you and your

organisation need.
