1 KATHMANDU UNIVERSITY School of Medical Sciences General Information Kathmandu University is an independent, not-for-profit, non-government institution. It is an institution of higher learning dedicated to maintain high standards of academic excellence. Kathmandu University was established by the Act of Parliament on November 1991. It started functioning from December 11, 1991. MISSION The Kathmandu University has the mission to:  promote all-around development of students’ abilities personalities,  develop an awareness of the role of science and its application in the understanding of problems of contemporary society,  extend and disseminate knowledge and encourage its application,  develop a community of scholar, students and staff in which understanding and wisdom can grow and flourish. ORGANIZATIONS STRUCTURE The Kathmandu University is governed by the University’s Senate, which is its apex body. The Prime Minister is the Chairperson of the Senate. Members of the Senate include Pro-Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, Registrar and Deans of the University, Representatives from the Parliament, Industry, Mayors of Banepa and Dhulikhel Municipalities, academicians, donors, concerned government officials, faculty and student representatives and librarian. The Executive Committee, headed by the Vice-Chancellor, is responsible for carrying out policy decisions taken by the Senate. The Academic Council is the focal body of the University in academic matters. Its main responsibility is to enhance the academic standard of the university. It determines the standard and quality of teaching, curriculum, methods of evaluation, nature and types of examinations, and prescribes teaching materials. It also sets the eligibility criteria for admission of students. LOCATION The university is located about 28 km east of Kathmandu between Dhulikhel and Banepa towns. The towns of Dhulikhel and Banepa accommodate a great number of students and are expected to grow as university towns. The University has pleasing and peaceful environmental to support educational atmosphere. Located in the hilltops, with an area of 17 hectares, the university provides a panoramic view of central and eastern Himalayan ranges that include famous peaks like the Everest. ACADEMIC PROGRAM The University offers the academic and short-term programs through its six schools: School of Science, School of Management, School of Engineering, School of Arts, School of Education and School of Medical Sciences. Each school has a Faculty Board that functions under the supervision of the Academic Council. The Faculty Board of each School is responsible for approving its academic programs. Different subject committees under the Faculty Board recommend the curricula for different programs and re view them periodically. The University first granted affiliation to a private medical college, Manipal College of Medical Sciences, at Pokhara to start MBBS program in December 1994. Since then seven other medical/dental colleges have been granted affiliation: College of Medical Sciences, Bharatpur, Chitwan, in August 1996; Nepalgunj Medical College, Chisapani, Banke, in December 1997; Kathmandu Medical College, Kathmandu, in December 1997, Nepal Medical College, Kathmandu, in December 1997, Nobel Medical College, Morang in February 2007, Kantipur Dental College, Kathmandu in November 2007 and Lumbini Medical College, Palpa in March 2009.
