THE READING INCENTIVE PROGRAM HAS BEGUN!We are celebrating the 25th year of the reading incentive program. The 2018 theme is IHC Superheroes—Let the Adventures Begin!, and we are off to a good start. Encourage your children to participate. Contact the librarian if you have not received information about how the program works or need more details. Your children are the beneficiaries of a wonderful legacy when they read Jewish books. For February 2018, here is the library schedule for Storytelling and the borrowing of books during the first session of Religious School on each of these Sundays (there may be adjustments for Third Grade Flex and Second Grade cooking).

February 11 Grades 1, 3, and the 4th Grade class of Joan Katz/Lauren AllenFebruary 25 Kindergarten, Grade 2, and the 4th Grade class of Lainna Cohen.

Winter provides a great opportunity for parents and children to spend time reading. So be certain to return books you have borrowed in the past and check out new ones. Your Temple Library has a well-developed collection at your fingertips—and the books are free!

WHAT’S NEWTemple Library has been sponsoring a book club since May of 2002. The selections for February 13 and April 10 may be of special interest and have certain similarities. In chronological order, here is a short preview of both. The Weight of Ink, by Rachel Kadish, is a riveting tale about two women in London—one in the 1660s and the other in the 21st century. Ester is the Sephardic scribe for a blind rabbi when Jews were confronted by anti-Semitism and often questioned the existence of God. Within the Jewish communities, the philosophy of Spinoza and the teachings of Sabbatai Zvi influenced Jews in different ways. More than three hundred years later a newly discovered cache of old letters weave together Ester and Helen, a somewhat intimidating scholar of Jewish history, although she herself is not Jewish. How these two women cope with physical, emotional, intellectual, and personal challenges brings us close to them, their relationships, their difficult decisions, and the history of the times in a formidable, yet page-turning novel. The German Girl, by Armando Lucas Correa, also has parallel stories, this time starting in1939 and leading up to 2014. Hannah is an almost twelve-year-old girl fleeing with her beloved parents from Germany aboard the luxury ship, the St. Louis. Then there is Anna, a twelve year old whose father disappeared on 9/11, shortly before she was born. Her father grew up in Cuba and an unexpected letter brings together Great-Aunt Hannah and Anna. The author is able to delve into the minds and anxieties of young girls with powerful and poetic language that captures the imagination of the reader. We get to know families, their joys and their heartbreaks, as though we were all part of these young women’s lives. Both books bring historical eras alive and the heroes, heroines, as well as secondary characters, are memorable. The Jewish Book Club meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 12 noon in Room 206. Do consider attending a meeting—we always have a great discussion.

TEMPLE LIBRARYEvelyn Pockrass, Librarian; [email protected]

Meetings are at 12 noon at IHC in Room 206. Read the book. Bring your lunch. Join the group for a lively

SISTERHOODKaren Rossen, IHC Sisterhood President; [email protected]

Well, winter has finally arrived! I love the snow falling and contrast between the cold outside and warm inside.

In December, a delegation of 17 IHC members (four from Sisterhood), went to the URJ Biennial meeting. Workshops and discussions crowded the schedule and, on Shabbat, we were among 6,000 Reform Jews celebrating together!

By far, for me, the D'var Torah given by Rabbi Rick Jacobs, the President of the URJ, was the crown jewel. I often struggle with our relationship with Israel and he expressed so well a vision for creating change. I also am particularly impressed with the way he described Reform Judaism as a doorway in, not the last stop out of practicing and identifying as a Jew.

I like to use the doorway analogy to describe a point in time on our Jewish journey when I'm presenting to our students at consecration or confirmation. We are often standing outside a door, deciding whether or not to enter. Often it is who is at the door with us that will tip the decision. I hope that Sisterhood will always be standing inside the door at IHC as a welcoming and inviting option. Our 2018 Sisterhood calendar is certainly full of events and projects to encourage you to join Sisterhood through that doorway.

Read on and you will learn all that Sisterhood has to offer. Stay warm on your way and I look forward to celebrating with you in Sisterhood.

February is shaping up to be a fun month. Small Chai gets to play with the folks from the JCC, YEAH! This is always a fun event and the children really enjoy running around and playing. Rishonim will be going to the Monon Center for a fun day of swimming indoors. It may be cold outside, but in there it’s a balmy 88 degrees (or so it feels).

Thinking forward a little bit, March 4, 2018, is the IFTY Purim carnival. Arm bands will be sold on February 11 and 25. You can purchase an arm band for $5 on those days or pay $6 at the door. This is the biggest fundraiser for IFTY so I hope you will support these fantastic teens. The carnival will begin immediately following the Purim Shpiel.
