She is committed to the success of the local Jewish community and currently serves as the Social Action board chair for Young Leadership Division of the Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis. Maddy also is a graduate of the University of Indianapolis with a degree in Global Leadership. Maddy's mom is Ruth Anderson, a member of IHC. Her brother Jacob and sister-in-law Tori also live in Indianapolis with their one year old son Tovi. When you see Maddy, welcome her to our IHC family.

CHANTS ENCOUNTERS by Cantor Janice Roger

The sound of the final tekiah g’dolah still rings in my ears even though Yom Kippur ended a few days ago. Many people worked together to make services happen and the singers and musicians

who participated are only part of the forces necessary to create meaningful prayer.

Thank you to everyone who shared their talents with our congregation this High Holy Day season. In late August, our Congregational Choir began rehearsing under the direction of Michael Messina. Michael has led the choir for 20 years and brought not only a wonderful spirit and wealth of knowledge about leading choirs, but also the experience of learning from Dr. Samuel Adler, a composer of liturgical Jewish music and the son of a cantor. Under his direction, the choir has provided beautiful and inspiring music for the holiest season of our year.

Assisting Michael at rehearsals was Mark Stoner, who has played organ and piano at IHC for almost 30 years. Mark’s talent is not limited to playing the notes printed on a page; he is a gifted improviser and has taken many tunes from our culture and turned them into amazing musical works on the spur of the moment.

The choir itself is made up of singers with a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Each member has a gift that he or she shares to create a whole that is truly greater than the sum of its parts. Our singers this year were: Dan Ahlgren, Carol Baker, Erin Benedict, Jerry Bennett, Dave Carr, Joe Cehovin, Juliet Duncanson, Andy Engel, Ren Fortgang, Sarah Freeman, Laurie Gavrin, Rosalie Gussow, Maya Harris, Elisabeth Hoegberg, Matthew Hume, Ben Mandresh, Joan Rapkin, Hugh Resnick, Eddie Roger, Kathy Sax, David Sklan, Carmen Stark, Mark Stoner II, Candy Vogel, and Enid Zwirn.

In addition to the choir, Michael and Mark, some very talented instrumentalists shared their talents during our services. On Rosh Hashanah the ensemble was made up of Laura Dubish (flute), Shawn Goodman (clarinet), Leonid Sirotkin (oboe), and Anna Efroymson (cello). Polina Umansky inspired us once again with her emotional rendition of “Kol Nidre.” On Yom Kippur afternoon, Wendy Muston accompanied our prayers with the beautiful sound of the harp.

Of course, the strongest of our instrumentalists is Patti Freeman Dorson, our ba’al tekiah—sounder of the Shofar. The power of each blast called each of us to renew ourselves and our commitment. May she continue to go from strength to strength.

5776 will provide us with many more music moments—I look forward to each and every one!

LOVE TO SING, SING, SING?Music and prayer are bound together in many ways. Tunes help us remember the text, can enhance the meaning of the text, and bring us together in a community. When we sing and chant our prayers, we unite with Jews across space and time. The same goes for singing in a choir. A 2010 study by Chorus America revealed that:

Choral singers are more likely to vote, give money to philanthropies, and also to volunteer; they're the kind of people you want on your team. . .

What draws people to singing—beyond the sheer artistic experience and communal expression—is partly the accessibility of singing. There are few economic or

educational barriers. And a singer need not possess the level of skill of an instrumentalist to still feel like a contributor to the creation of art.

On October 7, our Congregational Choir will begin regular rehearsals. The choir participates in Shabbat services and special programs throughout the year. Members ages 14 and older are welcome to find their place in the choir. There are no auditions and one does not need to read either music or Hebrew to participate. Rehearsals take place Wednesday evenings from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. For more information or to sign up, contact Cantor Roger at [email protected] or 255-6647, ext. 208.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN AND THE JEWS— ON EXHIBIT THROUGH NOVEMBER 15, 20152015 marks the 150th anniversary of the death of President Abraham Lincoln. He died on Shabbat in the middle of Passover and, according to an article by Rahel Musleah in Hadassah Magazine, Rabbi Benjamin Szold of Baltimore announced his death saying, “We should regard Abraham Lincoln . . . as a son of Israel. And if . . . he was not flesh of our flesh or bone of our bone, he was indeed spirit of our spirit and soul of our soul.”

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois is hosting a new exhibition on the relationship of President Lincoln to the Jews. The exhibit, “With Firmness in the Right,” was inspired by a book written by Professor Jonathan D. Sarna and Benjamin Shapell: Lincoln and the Jews: a History. Hadassah Magazine writes glowingly about this exhibit.

Please consider a trip to visit this exhibit and learn more about the effect which Lincoln’s legacy has had on the American Jewish Experience. The museum is located at 212 North Sixth Street in Springfield. For more information, go to www.alplm.org or call (217) 558-8844.

TEMPLE LIBRARYAs always, be certain to return borrowed books as quickly as possible. Children’s books have yellow labels on the spine; youth books have red labels, and adult books have white labels, some with dots. Although we always enjoy contacting members, it helps tremendously when books are returned promptly. So keep your eyes open for IHC Temple Library books that need to be returned. We appreciate your help!

What’s New

In August, Rosenwald, a film documentary by Aviva Kempner, opened in New York and subsequently in other places around the country. Julius Rosenwald had been the president and later chairman of the board at Sears, Roebuck and Company during the first decades of the twentieth century. What distinguished Rosenwald from many of his wealthy contemporaries was his unique credo to “give while you live.” Rosenwald’s foundation, the Julius Rosenwald Fund, awarded many grants but the documentary was inspired by the financial encouragement he provided for what became known as the Rosenwald schools for blacks in southern states prior to desegregation. Rosenwald, influenced by Rabbi Emil Hirsch’s teachings, acted on Booker T. Washington’s comment that the young negro children needed educational and job opportunities and that their schools were in deplorable condition. Thus, for more than twenty years, Rosenwald provided seed money and requested the community’s financial support or involvement in the building of more than 5,300 schools to educate African American youngsters.

Schools were designed by the Tuskegee Institute’s staff and were designated as one or two-teacher facilities. They were simple, clean, provided a strong curriculum and were considered to have contributed to the evolution of the black middle class. Some well-known personalities attended Rosenwald schools or were the recipients of the Rosenwald Fund’s special grants. Names like Congressman John Lewis, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Eugene Robinson, activist Julian Bond, writer Maya Angelou and opera singer Marion Anderson, come to mind.

Why does this have meaning to the Jewish community? Partly because Rosenwald was Jewish and his deeds exemplified what is meant by Tikkun Olam—repairing the world. For those of us in the IHC community, you will be interested in another facet of Rosenwald’s philanthropic projects. He also sought to build YMCAs for negroes (the “Y” was just for white people at one time) and, in Indianapolis, IHC’s rabbi, Morris M. Feuerlicht helped Rosenwald raise community funds to erect such a building. For a full description, see A Hoosier Rabbinate, pages 57-59, Rabbi Feuerlicht’s memoir, in the Biography section of the library.

And in the Youth section of the Temple Library, we have the recently published book, Schools of Hope: How Julius Rosenwald Helped Change African American Education, by Norman H. Finkelstein, which explains in a detailed, very attractive format the history of the Rosenwald schools. It includes strikingly sharp black and white photos with a foreword by one of Rosenwald’s grandchildren. The book truly is a family book as all ages can read it and learn.

There are many such “gems” in your Temple library, just waiting eagerly for you to come by, browse and borrow!

Always feel free to visit your Temple Library. Questions? Contact Evelyn Pockrass, Librarian, 255-6647, x 217, [email protected].

YOUTH GROUPSLea Coleman, Youth Director; [email protected]

I can’t believe it’s fall already. Wow, this year is going too quickly! I have to say that we have had a great few months as YOUth and I am looking forward to many more. IFTY led us in prayer for Yom Kippur and, as always, they were amazing. For those who were able to attend the service, I

hope it was as meaningful for you as it was for IFTY.

I hope that all Rishonim (Grades 3-5) will join me at Gleaners on October 10 at 8:45 am. Please rsvp to [email protected] to let me know how many in your family are coming. This activity is open to siblings who are nine and over, so you are welcome to make this a family outing. Gleaners is a wonderful way for the children to learn that there is always a need and we can supply the help.

Who wants to go on a hayride? I do! I want to go with my Small Chai friends in kindergarten through second grades. Let’s meet at Fort Harrison Park, go on a hayride, have a little nosh and celebrate Havdalah with Rabbi Scott. Please rsvp to [email protected] and let me know if you and your parents will be joining me.

As always, if you have any questions regarding YOUth, just contact me at your convenience at [email protected] or 255-6647 ext. 216.

Hineni: Here I Am ~ A New 7th Grade Curriculum "Pray as if everything depended on God, Act as if everything depended on you."IHC 7th graders are embarking on the second year of an exciting hands-on learning adventure “Hineni: Here I am.” What is Hineni? It is an opportunity for our youth, in their Bar / Bat Mitzvah year, to acquire a deep appreciation for their own responsibility in tikkun olam, repairing / fixing the world. The year will include studying the Jewish obligation for social justice, exploring synagogue, community, national and international social justice initiatives and participating in creating and executing numerous projects. Our 7th graders will also be the school’s Tzedakah Council, deciding where funds contributed weekly by our students, should be donated. When you see students with their navy “Hineni” shirts please stop and talk to them about what they are learning. The dialogue will be interesting, thought provoking and insightful!

IHC Student, Rachael Coleman, Studying in IsraelRachael Coleman, a high school junior, is participating in a dynamic fully accredited 4 month semester in Israel program. The “NFTY High School in Israel—Eisendrath International Experience” (EIE), based on Kibbutz Tzuba, approximately fifteen minutes outside of Jerusalem, was established in 1961. Many of the leaders of Reform Judaism today are alumni of this program. Rachel will be writing a blog, keeping the congregation informed about EIE and her personal experiences in Israel.

Words from President (and Lifelong IHC Member) about his and Caroline’s decision to include IHC in their estate planning:

“I've said this time and again, we don't know what IHC will look like 25, even 50 years from now. We do know that it will look different. We want to make sure IHC will continue to be the relevant reformed congregation in central Indiana. We must build our temple’s foundation to assure this. Knowing Caroline and I are giving to the Life and Legacy Campaign and committing dollars that will perpetually help keep IHC able to perform its mission to our community makes participating in this campaign an easy decision for us. Please join Caroline and me this year and commit to the future of IHC. Future generations will thank us.”

What will your legacy be? How will you plant the seeds so that IHC can be for future generations what it has been for you? In the coming months, you will hear more about our Life & Legacy Program and those IHC members, like Greg and Caroline, who have already joined our Legacy Society. Your legacy gift, of any size can, be customized to fit your dreams, lifestyle, family and financial means. Here are just some things to know:

1. Thanks to the partnership with the Jewish Federation and the Grinspoon Foundation, IHC is getting training, support and even a

financial incentive to help us get our campaign off the ground and to ensure its success!

2. This is your chance to reflect on your Jewish passions and your vision for a Jewish future, here at IHC and possibly, with other central Indiana Jewish organizations.

3. Your first step is to meet with some of our team members so we can find out how you want your legacy to make an impact by leaving a future gift that makes the most sense for you and your family.

4. Your second step is simply to sign a letter of intent.

5. The third step will be to formalize your commitment by making the relevant changes to your will, retirement account beneficiaries, life insurance policies or other estate plans

6. Then, ongoing, you then will be acknowledged, publicized (unless you want to remain anonymous), thanked, but most importantly, part of making sure that the vibrant future of IHC and our local Jewish community will ensure Jewish tomorrows.

If you want to be one of the first to talk to our Life and Legacy Team or if you have already included IHC in your estate planning, please contact any of us: Jerry Ancel Carolyn Hiser Chuck Cohen Amy Isaacs Tom Doehrman Sonja Kantor Patti Freeman Dorson Rabbi Brett Krichiver Lynda Goodman Diane Lutz

Thank you in advance for all of your current and future support of IHC!

GREG’S BLOG | AUGUST 25, 2015

Hi Everyone,

In August, your Board of Directors, along with Lynda and Rabbi Brett, met for our annual Board Retreat. In my opening remarks at the retreat, I listed all of the accomplishments in the past 12 months made possible by our hard working Board and I want to share these with you. They are listed below. As you read them, you will notice there are a lot of ways you can volunteer and get involved in the coming months. If you are interested and willing to help with any of the upcoming tasks (in bold), please let me know. We want and need all of our members to volunteer to help our organization.

But before you read them, let me update you on a couple of other things: Members of the Board, Sisterhood and Brotherhood will be reaching out to you in the next three weeks before the High Holidays to wish you a Happy New Year. If you are willing, please share your positive experiences over the last year and let us know how we all can do better. In addition, you will be receiving two packets in the mail in the coming weeks. You will soon receive your High Holiday packet with your tickets, info on High Holiday activities and opportunities. Shortly after that arrives, you will receive information about the Annual Campaign at the High Holidays. In our continuous desire to be transparent, we have included financial information, as well as some frequently asked questions so you will understand why we do this annual fundraiser. Please take the time to read through all of the information, but most importantly, please give! It is our goal that 100% of our members will participate. So, please do your part! All the work our staff and Clergy do needs your financial support. It's up to us!! Let's do this!!!

MY OPENING REMARKS AT THE IHC BOARD RETREAT 2015: Welcome to the 2015 IHC Board Retreat. I want to take a minute to pat us all on the back for the great work we did last year and summarize where we are to date.

Rabbi Fox started July 1st and the reviews have been fantastic. Rabbi Brett and Rabbi Scott's planning over the Spring has paid dividends and it's nice to see the teamwork in action. We also hired a communication/marketing coordinator, Maddy Anderson, who started on September 1!!

The Retreat today will highlight some of the work you all have been doing. A couple of years ago, when Rabbi Wolfman joined us at our retreat, he pointed out weaknesses of our staff and Board and questioned our leadership. Today I feel (and I hope you agree) we are a strong board with leadership direction in the areas he highlighted.

1. We have a leadership succession plan taking shape. We have the next five years of leadership in place for the first time in a very long time with Patti Freeman Dorson and Marc Katz. With the help of a few we have targeted over 25 potential leaders and will be continuing to reach out to them.

2. The Commitment Task Force led by Mitch Katz and comprised of both Board and lay members met more than 12 times

over the past nine months and is helping us redefine our commitment policies. It has been pointed out that we need to better communicate our policies and find ways to engage our members so that IHC will remain meaningful and relevant to our current and future members. The Commitment Task Force report shows what lay leaders and congregants can accomplish when put to a task. It's truly why I believe IHC will remain the strongest and largest temple in Central Indiana.

3. With the help of the Federation and a grant from the Grinspoon Foundation, we finally have our Planned Giving initiative off the ground: "Life and Legacy". This will be the core for sustainability in the future, led by Carolyn Hiser and Sonja Kantor and a strong team. This fall, our members will be hearing more about this campaign.

4. The Governance Committee has put an employee review process in place and we have reviewed our Clergy and Executive Director, who in turn, have reviewed their staff.

5. The Board has again participated in a survey of its own performance, in an effort to monitor our progress and make improvements as a governing body.

6. The Governance Committee has been actively working to improve our HR systems and has begun work to fine-tune our organization. Thanks to Carly Turow for her leadership

7. With the diligent work of the Cemetery Task Force (as approved by the congregation) and some help from me, we executed an option agreement to sell excess property adjacent to our north side cemetery.

WITH ALL OF THAT SAID, WE HAVE MUCH MORE WORK TO DO.1. First and foremost we have an Annual Campaign that needs to be successful. We need to raise $100k and it's up to all of the Board not just to participate (which is mandatory), but to reach out to our congregation.

2. We need to hire a Director of Lifelong Learning and start making plans both for the transition leading up to Cantor’s retirement in 2017 and the hiring of a new Cantor. Marc Katz will be heading up the Cantor Transition Task Force and Sonja Kantor will be heading up the Cantor Celebration Task Force.

3. Our bylaws need to be reviewed and I have asked asked Miriam Dant and Andy Kleiman to head up a ByLaws Task Force. We have not looked at them since we merged the boards of the Congregation and the Foundation about 10 years ago, and it is time to see if any tweaking is needed.

4. We need to start the discussion of IHC’s 160th birthday and how we want to celebrate.

I'm sure I'm missing some things but as you can see we are working to make IHC strong spiritually, financially, and socially.

REMEMBRANCES —A DANCE KALEIDOSCOPE PERFORMANCEThis October, Dance Kaleidoscope will open its 2015-2016 season at Clowes Hall with Remembrances: A Ballet in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust. The ballet was choreographed by Brian Honigbaum, who grew up at IHC. He was inspired to create this work by local survivors Michael and Agnes Vogel. Honigbaum writes, “The most important element of this ballet is its use as an educational tool to teach children and adults alike about the story of the Holocaust and why we, as a society, must make sure that this never happens again.” Cantor Roger will have a featured role, accompanying the dancers in song.

IHC has reserved a block of seats for the performance on Sunday, October 18, at 2:30 p.m. If you would like to be part of our audience, tickets are $28 each ($17.50 for students up to High School Seniors) and can be reserved by contacting Cantor Roger at 255-6647, ext. 208 or [email protected].
