Our vision is to provide an outstanding personalised educational experience for each and every Sixth Form student. Kettering Science Academy will be a high achieving, courteous institution which will be exceptional in its care, guidance and support of the young people it serves. WELCOME TO OUR ACADEMYDear students and parents,

At Kettering Science Academy Sixth Form we believe that the student is at the heart of everything we do and every decision we make.

We firmly believe that our Sixth Form is the stepping stone to higher education and employment and as such we encourage in students the skills needed to be successful. To do this we believe in creating the conditions for achievement, actively promoting collaboration and developing the skills for leadership.

ACHIEVEMENT Kettering Science Academy has a proven track record of success with an ever increasing number of students obtaining places at Britain’s top universities. Achievement for every learner comes through hard work and we believe in creating the conditions which enable every learner to be successful.

By creating a personalised timetable for every learner and a personal pathway we believe that we enable every Sixth Former to achieve the very best they can. This is the fourth year we are offering three separate pathways.

COLLABORATION Collaborative partnerships with Brooke Weston and Corby Business Academies and local colleges enables us to offer a varied and rich curriculum.

We are also able to offer the traditional pathway of AS and A Level courses together with new vocational and applied single and double award courses in such subjects as business and sport. In the near future we hope to offer some level 2 provision.

LEADERSHIP At KSA Sixth Form we offer opportunities to develop leadership skills and these range from head boy and girl positions and the Duke of Edinburgh Award, through to being leaders in learning during vertical tutor times and organising community and charity events. The skills learnt through an active enrichment programme will equip every learner for the world of work.

By taking on responsibility the learners of today will become the leaders of tomorrow and at Kettering Science Academy Sixth Form we actively encourage responsible leadership.

ACHIEVEMENT The staff at KSA are experts in their subject areas and provide a personalised learning programme tailored to the needs of our post 16 students. Success and attainment are promoted through opportunities for students to be proud of their achievements by setting aspirational targets.

The A Level pass rate over the last four years has averaged at 97%. Of these students, an average of 80% progressed to university to pursue a degree course. All other students deferred entry, progressed to further education at college, secured apprenticeships or obtained jobs with training.

There is a positive learning environment at our Sixth Form which is based on clear expectations and mutual respect. Sixth Form students are expected to work and study independently, although there are opportunities for students to study with peers and staff in subject areas. The Sixth Form is part of the collegiate structure of the school and is integrated into the wider academic community, allowing students to participate in sporting activities and engage in the enrichment programme. Students are expected to leave KSA as socially confident young adults who have experienced growth in addition to excellent academic success.

COLLABORATION

TUTOR SUPPORTSixth Form tutors are responsible for a student’s academic progress. Their job is to support the students to achieve their targets, nurturing them along the way. The tutor will also assist the student with individualised guidance for progression from the Academy to future pathways at university or in employment.

FINANCIAL SUPPORTThe 16-19 Bursary is available for students from low income families to support their education. Applications are available from student reception.

Free school meals are still available to Sixth Form students.

PROGRESS CHECKStudent progress and attainment is monitored at 4 stages throughout each academic year and reported to the student and their parents/guardians. During these periods of monitoring, students and staff will discuss the progress so far. If necessary, intervention will be put in place to support students to achieve.

PARENTS’ EVENINGSTwo parents’ evenings are arranged throughout the year where:

• General progress and attainment can be discussed with the student’s form tutor.

• Specific progress and attainment can be discussed with the student’s subject tutor.

PARTNERSHIPSKSA collaborates with other educational establishments to allow a wider breadth of curriculum and to offer additional experiences.

KSA works closely with other Brooke Weston Trust schools and local colleges to meet the needs of our students and their preferred learning pathways.

LEADERSHIP ENRICHMENT ACADEMIC• Extended project – This is a project where the student decides a topic

to investigate and then produces a dissertation which is accredited at level 3. This encourages students to work independently, develop study skills whilst enhancing their knowledge in a specific area.

• COPE (Certificate in Personal Effectiveness) – This qualification is accredited to students if they can meet criteria based on teamwork, leadership and co-operation. This is worth up to 70 UCAS points.

• Academy Excellence Awards – Students who excel in certain subjects are entered for these prestigious national awards.

• KSA Excellence Awards – These are available for all students with a range of challenging and interesting titles, allowing students to widen their knowledge and develop their independent research skills.

• Young Enterprise – An opportunity for students to set up and manage their own business, taking on different roles of responsibility and working with local employers.

The Head Boy and Girl are elected by their peers annually. Their role is to represent the Sixth Form on the school council, attend and speak at open evenings and take on leadership roles in the academy. They are involved in appointments to the committee teams and the teaching staff. They have a key role in the Sixth Form review. They manage and liaise with the Sixth Form committees.

HEAD BOY AND HEAD GIRL

These are made up of all Year 12 and 13 students. The aim of the committees is to allow students to take on a leadership role and have ownership of their own projects and activities. A wide range of committees exist including publicity, academic, charity, environment, sport, library, arts, business and social. Students are actively encouraged to lead and engage in these teams across the whole academy.

COMMUNITY PROJECTS Sixth form students work within their house to plan and organise projects involving younger students and the community. The aim is to develop their social and citizenship skills while providing role models for younger students at the Academy.

SIXTH FORM AMBASSADORS Sixth form students have the opportunity to become an ambassador, working with staff to promote the Academy to the wider community and accompanying visitors around the Academy. This role develops

students’ confidence and communication skills.

PREPARATION FOR THE FUTURE Academic preparation includes visits to universities and workshops on student finance, bursaries, how to apply to university and apprenticeships. Sixth formers also benefit from visiting speakers who talk about different careers.

To develop students’ life skills, KSA also offers workshops such as cooking, First Aid and driving safety.

COMMITTEES

The Sixth Form offersopportunities for us to take on more responsibility around the school, especially withthe committee roles and head boy/girl positions.

All students will be expected to take part in academic enrichment, engage in leadership opportunities or participate in the mentoring programme throughout their Sixth Form experience. If the number of applications exceeds the Sixth Form capacity the post 16 admissions policy will be implemented, which is available on the Academy’s website.

FRENCH/GERMAN A LEVELEXAM BOARD AQA ASSESSMENT EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT IN JUNE

UNITS STUDIED

There are four units covering listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

• Units 1 and 2 are completed in Year 12.

• Units 3 and 4 are completed in Year 13.

Topics covered include new technologies, immigration, relationships, the media and the environment.

FUTURE PATHWAYS

Those who study French or German at A Level prepare themselves for fluency and accuracy when conversing or writing in another language. Students will be able to give and justify their opinions on a number of interesting topics. They will become increasingly confident in being able to speak with and write to people in Francophone or German-speaking countries.

Study at AS/A2 level will help prepare them for further study or working life in an increasingly global economy.

Courses offered are subject to student uptake but wherever possible we will try to accommodate individual students’ needs. Additional courses may be offered to suit the needs of a particular cohort.

FUTURE PATHWAYS

This A Level offers a great route for students considering higher education or a future career in journalism, education or theatre. Studying Literature at A Level is a great course for any individual with a love of reading. Texts from poetry, prose and drama are all explored alongside critical writings which enable students to develop their own views and ideas. The breadth of texts studied will broaden and mature any young reader into a critical thinker able to view the world with perception.

This A Level offers a great route for students considering higher education or a career in the media. Studying media at A Level presents students with the opportunity to investigate topics that spark their interest whilst developing their knowledge and understanding of contemporary debates and issues. The practical production units offered at both AS and A2 enable students to demonstrate their creative and technical competence with new digital media whilst also allowing students the autonomy to design and create features which reflect their own media tastes.

Unit 1 - Portfolio of Creative Skills (30%) Production of one portfolio that contains evidence of product investigation, product design and product manufacture. Photographic evidence must be provided for the range of products made.

Unit 2 - Design and Technology in Practice (20%) Exam which is made up of materials and components, industrial and commercial practice, quality, health and safety.

Unit 3 - Designing for the Future (20%) Exam which is made up of industrial and commercial practice, systems and control, design in context and sustainability.

Unit 4 - Commercial Design coursework (30%) Product design and make activity involving a real client or specific user group. Research and design strategies are demonstrated in a design folder with photographic evidence of the making of the product as well as evidence of the made product in use.

FUTURE PATHWAYS

Product design encompasses a wide range of design disciplines but is firmly rooted in the skills required to design and make high quality products.Those who study product design at A Level have an excellent foundation to go on to further study at degree level in product design, graphic design, furniture design, architecture, automotive design, interior design or landscape design.Study at AS/A2 level will help prepare students for further study or working life in an increasingly demanding consumer society.

The BTEC Level 3 in Performing Arts (Acting) is designed to provide students with a greater understanding of the processes of the performing arts world, with a specific emphasis on acting skills and knowledge. This course is suitable for students who have previously studied BTEC Level 2 Performing Arts, GCSE Drama, GCSE Expressive Arts or those with strong performance experience.This course blends both the development of skills useful in the performing arts industry, as the course is vocational, but also allows a theoretical underpinning of knowledge, which will support students onto their chosen pathway after Sixth Form.In year one, students will have to study one core unit and two optional units chosen by the assessors.Core Unit: Principles of ActingOptional Units include:• Devising Play• Theatre in Education• Auditions for Actors• Film and TV Acting and many more.If students chose to complete their studies at the end of year one, they will receive a BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Performing Arts (Acting) the equivalent to an AS Level at grade A*, A, C or E. A LEVEL MUSICEXAM BOARD AQA ASSESSMENT IN JUNE

UNITS STUDIED

This course enables students to extend their knowledge and understanding of music, to create and develop their own musical ideas and to demonstrate technical, interpretative and communication skills through performing music.This six-unit course helps students to develop aural, theoretical and analytical skills and enables them to explore a professional piece of work and an area of study selected to suit their preferences. They can choose to study compositional techniques, to create music which draws on their own experience and enthusiasm or to arrange a given piece of music. In their performances, students can present solo and ensemble pieces and can work with music technology.A Level Music builds on the knowledge and skills gained from GCSE Music as well as musical experience gained outside the classroom. It recognises the interdependence of different aspects of musical activity.

FUTURE PATHWAYS

The course specification provides a sound preparation for the study of music in higher education, as well as providing opportunities to develop strengths and interests leading to music-related and other careers. It encourages students to develop a wide range of transferable skills such as critical thinking, research, communication and team-work.

DRAMA AND THEATRE STUDIES A LEVELEXAM BOARD AQA ASSESSMENT IN JUNE

AS Level (Year One)

Unit 1: Exploration of Drama and Theatre40% of AS marks (20% of the A Level marks)This unit introduces students to the content of plays written for the theatre. They will learn how to analyse plays in a variety of ways so that they become familiar with the way written plays can be interpreted for realisation in performance.

Unit 2: Theatre Text in Performance60% of AS marks (30% of the A Level marks)This unit offers students the chance to demonstrate skills in a performance environment. The knowledge and understanding gained during the study of two plays in Unit 1 can now be applied with a view to delivering a performance to an audience.

A2 (Year Two)

Unit 3 Exploration of Dramatic Performance40% of A2 marks (20% of the A Level marks)This unit requires the creation of a unique and original piece of theatre. The knowledge and understanding gained in the AS units can now be applied to a created production. Students will be assessed on both the process of creation and the finished product in the form of a performance to an invited audience.

Unit 4 Theatre Text in Context60% of A2 marks (30% of the A Level marks)This externally examined written unit requires the detailed study of one set play text and one prescribed historical period of theatrical development.

FUTURE PATHWAYS

The Drama and Theatre Studies course is designed to provide a balance across a range of learning activities. This course combines the activities of exploring plays, creating theatre, the performing of plays, the analysis of theatre and the critical evaluation of all of these elements. Students completing the course successfully will have a thorough understanding of drama and theatre, highly toned analytical and creative skills and an ability to communicate effectively with others.

Core 1 and 2 – Calculus, Trigonometry, Geometry, Algebra.

And either Statistics 1, Decision Maths 1 or Mechanics 1.

Core 3 and 4 – Further Trigonometry, Logarithms, Calculus.

FUTURE PATHWAYSThere are many routes for A Level mathematicians; degrees in engineering, accountancy and architecture require it. It can lead to careers in quantity surveying, financial services and banking among others. It also helps students to think, plan and process logically, to interpret the world around them in a factual way and improve problem solving skills.

CAMBRIDGE TECHNICALS LEVEL 3 QUALIFICATION: ICTEXAM BOARD OCR ASSESSMENT COURSEWORK ONLY – NO EXAM

UNITS STUDIED

The qualification is a two year course. Three units are completed each year in order to gain the award.2 mandatory units and 4 units selected from 23 options.Mandatory unit 1: Communication and employability skills for IT The unit will prepare learners to effectively use communication channels within a working environment and to understand what an employer expects of an individual, whilst identifying their own personal development needs.

Mandatory unit 2: Information systems This unit will provide the learner with a greater understanding of how organisations use information internally and externally, identifying the types of information they will encounter. The skills gained will give the learner knowledge of the functionality of information and how to produce management information systems.

FUTURE PATHWAYS

This course will develop your skills in using communication software and hardware. These skills will be useful on virtually every future pathway you could imagine. If you go on to further study you will find that you need ICT skills to produce and present your work; if you go on to employment you will find that ICT skills are essential wherever you work. ICT skills are an important part of ordinary everyday life – whether you engage in social networking, or manage your money on-line. This is a practical course which will give you good experience of using a broad range of ICT skills.

FUTURE PATHWAYSFurther Maths prepares students well for mathematics, actuarial and accountancy degrees, for some universities it is a prerequisite on some of the courses. It also develops further students’ abilities to rationalise, analyse and problem solve in a wide range of contexts.
