The Brotherhood of Black Heads gets its odd name from the fact that its patron saint, Mauritius, was a darkskinned Moor. This guild of unmarried German merchants was responsible for organising the town’s defenses. 16 Estonian Maritime Museum Pikk 70 • www.meremuuseum.ee Extensive displays on Estonia’s sea-faring history, housed in the historic Fat Margaret’s cannon tower. This fat, sturdy defence tower was built from 1511 to 1530 to protect Tallinn from attacks by the sea. In Medieval days its 159-metre spire would have made it a truly inspiring sight. Since 2009 Tallinn Flower Festival takes place here every summer. 23 Town Wall Gümnaasimumi 3 The power politics of the Middle Ages being what they were, Tallinn was constantly under threat of attack by one ambitious neighbour or another. The solution, starting in the 13th century, was to maintain a system of high, thick walls, guard towers and gates. With 1,9 km of its original city wall still standing, Tallinn boasts one of Europe’s best preserved Medieval fortifications. The portion of the wall that’s open to the public connects Nunna, Sauna and Kuldjala towers. 1 3 4 5 7 8 9 11 12 24 13 14 15 16 17 19 20 22 23 21 35 36 27 37 39 38 41 40 42 43 44 26 25 28 29 34 34 34 34 18 34 33 31 32 10 6 2 City 1:6 800 REGIO 2012 KL-12-001 0 100 200 m Old Town 24 Museum of Puppet Arts NUKU Lai 1 • www.nukuteater.ee The interactive NUKU centre and museum consists principally of theatre puppets. Ever since it opened back in 1952, the Estonian Puppet and Youth Theatre has been captivating audiences of all ages with its imaginative stories and colourful characters. 25 Adamson Eric Museum Lühike jalg 3 • www.adamson-eric.ee One of the most versatile Estonian artists of the 20th century, Adamson-Eric (1902-1968), worked in a number of disciplines. His creations, displayed in this medieval-merchant- house-turned-museum, include paintings and inventive jewellery. 26 St. Nicholas’ Church / Niguliste Museum Niguliste 3 www.nigulistemuuseum.ee Saints, dancing skeletons and silver – not to mention the occasional organ concert – are the main attractions at this imposing, 13th-century church. The church houses a museum dedicated to church art, displaying Medieval altarpieces and Tallinn’s most famous painting, Bernt Notke’s Danse Macabre. Destroyed in a World War II bombing raid, it was painstakingly reconstructed in the 1980s. The building's acoustics also make it a prime concert venue, with organ or choir performances held here most weekends. 27 Kiek in de Kök and Bastion Tunnels Komandandi tee 2 www.linnamuuseum.ee This huge 15th century tower is a museum of the town’s fortifications and serves as the entrance to the hidden tunnels that run under Toompea hill. The name of this 38m tower means “peep into the kitchen,” since it was so high that guards joked they could see right down the chimneys of the houses below. It was built in the 1470s, but quickly expanded and strengthened, giving it walls up to 4m thick. 28 Estonian Theatre and Music Museum Müürivahe 12 • www.tmm.ee Antique instruments and hand-cranked, 19th-century music machines. The hand- cranked, 19th-century music machines – some with moving figures on top – are particularly intriguing. 29 Viru Gates The 14th century round towers at the bottom of Viru street are actually only the fore- gates of what was a much more complex gate system. They have become a symbol of the town. 30 Hellemann Tower Müürivahe 48 • www.hellemann.ee This three-storey tower gives visitors a chance to walk along a 200 m stretch of the wall. Dating to the 14th century, it has been used as a prison and a weapons store, but nowadays houses an art gallery. Toompea 31 Toompea Castle and Pikk Hermann Tower Lossi plats 1 • www.riigikogu.ee Toompea Castle has been seat of power in Estonia since the German Knights of the Sword built the first stone fortress here in 1227-29. Even these days it’s home to the nation’s Parliament (Riigikogu). Standing at the southwest corner of Toompea Castle is the Pikk Hermann (Tall Hermann) Tower, a vital symbol of Estonian nationhood. Originally built in 1371, it reached its current, 46m height after reconstruction in 1500. 32 St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral Lossi plats 10 www.hot.ee/nsobor One piece of Old Town architecture that seems out of place here among its Medieval neighbours is the colourful, very Russian- looking, onion-domed church that lords over the city from atop Toompea hill. It was established here in 1900. Now the cathedral is the main place of worship for Estonia’s Russian Orthodox faithful. 33 Cathedral of Saint Mary the Virgin (Dome Church) Toom- Кooli 6 www.eelk.ee/tallinna.toom The Dome Church, Estonia’s main Lutheran church, once served Tallinn’s nobles and still displays their coats of arms. Established before 1233 and repeatedly rebuilt since, the church displays a mix of architectural styles. Visitors can climb the 69m baroque bell- tower for amazing views. 34 Viewing platforms In the old days the nobles living on Toompea hill would look down – both literally and figuratively – on the merchants and artisans living in the town below. Now so can you. Two viewing spots in particular, the Kohtu street and Patkuli platforms, give sweeping panoramas of Old Town’s rooftops, towers and beyond. From the Kohtu street platform there’s an unforgettable view of the city’s Medieval neighbourhood against the backdrop of its new financial district. The Patkuli platform, on the other hand, offers the best vantage point to see Tallinn’s fairy tale city wall and towers, as well as St. Olav’s Church and the harbour. From Patkuli a winding series of steps leads down the cliff face to Nunne street, below. 35 Danish King’s Garden Lühike jalg 9A On one slope of Toompea hill, between the city wall and Lower Town, you’ll find an open, gardenlike area and a terraced set of steps that lead down to a courtyard on Rüütli street. This relaxing spot was supposedly where King Valdemar II of Denmark and his troops camped before conquering Toompea in 1219. 36 Maiden’s Tower Lühike jalg 9A This tower next to the Danish King’s Garden dates to the 14th century. Naming it “Maiden’s” or “Virgin’s” Tower is another example of that wacky, Medieval irony: it used to house a prison for prostitutes. City Centre 37 Museum of Occupations Toompea 8 • www.okupatsioon.ee Dedicated to the 1940–1991 time period when Estonia suffered German and Soviet occupations. It’s a must-see for 20th century history buffs and anyone who wants to understand modern Estonian society. 38 Freedom Square Vabaduse väljak Tallinn’s showcase square has traditionally been a place of national symbolism and civic pride. The large pillar with the cross that dominates the west side of the square is the Monument to the War of Independence, fought from 1918 to 1920. 39 AHHAA Cience Centre Vabaduse väljak 9 www.ahhaa.ee Modern activity centre aims to make science fun for the whole family.  40 Bank of Estonia Museum Estonia pst 11 • www.eestipank.ee Exposition on the history of Estonian money and on the activities of the central bank. Built in 1913, the grand, Art Nouveau structure still belongs to the “Estonia” theatrical company. The state concert agency, Eesti Kontsert, is also headquartered here. 42 Hotel Viru & KGB Museum Viru väljak 4 • www.sokoshotels.fi In Soviet times it was rumoured that the KGB had files on everyone and that they operated in Viru Hotel. The latter rumour turned out to be true. Those intrigued by the city’s secret history can take a guided tour at this museum on 23rd floor. 43 Rotermann Quarter The 19th century industrial quarter has been given a modern architectural make-over. Trendy, cultural shopping centre with shops dedicated to cheese and wine. 44 Museum of Estonian Architecture Ahtri 2 www.arhitektuurimuuseum.ee Grand limestone structure the Rotermann’s Salt Storage is the ideal place for this museum dedicated to Estonian architecture through the times.

The largest selection of handicrafts by master craftsmen from all over Estonia.

15 House of the Brotherhood of Black Heads

Pikk 26 www.mustpeademaja.ee

Tallinn's most ornate guild hall, with Renaissance facade and spectacular doorway. The Brotherhood of Black Heads gets its odd name from the fact that its patron saint, Mauritius, was a darkskinned Moor. This guild of unmarried German merchants was responsible for organising the town’s defenses.

16 Estonian Maritime Museum

Pikk 70 • www.meremuuseum.ee

Extensive displays on Estonia’s sea-faring history, housed in the historic Fat Margaret’s cannon tower. This fat, sturdy defence tower was built from 1511 to 1530 to protect Tallinn from attacks by the sea. Take the stairs to the roof-top for a picture-postcard view of the Tallinn harbour and the Old Town.

17 St. Olav’s Church

Lai 50 • www.oleviste.ee

Once upon a time, from 1549 to 1625 to be precise, this 14th-century Gothic church was the tallest building in the world. In Medieval days its 159-metre spire would have made it a truly inspiring sight. At 124 metres, the current spire still towers over Old Town, and in spring and summer daring visitors can climb up for an amazing view.

18 Epping Tower

Laboratooriumi 31 www.eppingitorn.info

A 15th century tower with displays on Tallinn’s fortifications, Medieval weapons and armour.

19 Estonian Health Care Museum

22 Towers’ Square

Perfectly picturesque square offering view to Town Wall with its towers. Since 2009 Tallinn Flower Festival takes place here every summer.

23 Town Wall

Gümnaasimumi 3

The power politics of the Middle Ages being what they were, Tallinn was constantly under threat of attack by one ambitious neighbour or another.

24 Museum of Puppet Arts NUKU

Lai 1 • www.nukuteater.ee

The interactive NUKU centre and museum consists principally of theatre puppets. Ever since it opened back in 1952, the Estonian Puppet and Youth Theatre has been captivating audiences of all ages with its imaginative stories and colourful characters.

25 Adamson Eric Museum

Lühike jalg 3 • www.adamson-eric.ee

One of the most versatile Estonian artists of the 20th century, Adamson-Eric (1902-1968), worked in a number of disciplines. His creations, displayed in this medieval-merchant-house-turned-museum, include paintings and inventive jewellery.

26 St. Nicholas’ Church / Niguliste Museum

Niguliste 3 www.nigulistemuuseum.ee

Saints, dancing skeletons and silver – not to mention the occasional organ concert – are the main attractions at this imposing, 13th-century church.

27 Kiek in de Kök and Bastion Tunnels

Komandandi tee 2 www.linnamuuseum.ee

This huge 15th century tower is a museum of the town’s fortifications and serves as the entrance to the hidden tunnels that run under Toompea hill. The name of this 38m tower means “peep into the kitchen,” since it was so high that guards joked they could see right down the chimneys of the houses below. It was built in the 1470s, but quickly expanded and strengthened, giving it walls up to 4m thick.

28 Estonian Theatre and Music Museum

Müürivahe 12 • www.tmm.ee

Antique instruments and hand-cranked, 19th-century music machines. The hand-cranked, 19th-century music machines – some with moving figures on top – are particularly intriguing.

29 Viru Gates

The 14th century round towers at the bottom of Viru street are actually only the fore-gates of what was a much more complex gate system. They have become a symbol of the town.

30 Hellemann Tower

Müürivahe 48 • www.hellemann.eeThis three-storey tower gives visitors a chance to walk along a 200 m stretch of the wall. Dating to the 14th century, it has been used as a prison and a weapons store, but nowadays houses an art gallery.

Toompea

31 Toompea Castle and Pikk Hermann Tower

Lossi plats 1 • www.riigikogu.ee

Toompea Castle has been seat of power in Estonia since the German Knights of the Sword built the first stone fortress here in 1227-29.

32 St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

Lossi plats 10 www.hot.ee/nsobor

One piece of Old Town architecture that seems out of place here among its Medieval neighbours is the colourful, very Russian-looking, onion-domed church that lords over the city from atop Toompea hill. It was established here in 1900. Now the cathedral is the main place of worship for Estonia’s Russian Orthodox faithful.

33 Cathedral of Saint Mary the Virgin (Dome Church)

Toom- Кooli 6 www.eelk.ee/tallinna.toom

The Dome Church, Estonia’s main Lutheran church, once served Tallinn’s nobles and still displays their coats of arms. Established before 1233 and repeatedly rebuilt since, the church displays a mix of architectural styles. Visitors can climb the 69m baroque bell- tower for amazing views.

34 Viewing platforms

In the old days the nobles living on Toompea hill would look down – both literally and figuratively – on the merchants and artisans living in the town below.

35 Danish King’s Garden

Lühike jalg 9A

On one slope of Toompea hill, between the city wall and Lower Town, you’ll find an open, gardenlike area and a terraced set of steps that lead down to a courtyard on Rüütli street. This relaxing spot was supposedly where King Valdemar II of Denmark and his troops camped before conquering Toompea in 1219.

36 Maiden’s Tower

Lühike jalg 9A

This tower next to the Danish King’s Garden dates to the 14th century. Naming it “Maiden’s” or “Virgin’s” Tower is another example of that wacky, Medieval irony: it used to house a prison for prostitutes.

City Centre

37 Museum of Occupations

Toompea 8 • www.okupatsioon.ee

Dedicated to the 1940–1991 time period when Estonia suffered German and Soviet occupations. It’s a must-see for 20th century history buffs and anyone who wants to understand modern Estonian society.

38 Freedom Square

Vabaduse väljak

Tallinn’s showcase square has traditionally been a place of national symbolism and civic pride. The large pillar with the cross that dominates the west side of the square is the Monument to the War of Independence, fought from 1918 to 1920.

39 AHHAA Cience Centre

Vabaduse väljak 9 www.ahhaa.ee

Modern activity centre aims to make science fun for the whole family.

40 Bank of Estonia Museum

Estonia pst 11 • www.eestipank.ee

Exposition on the history of Estonian money and on the activities of the central bank. Visitors will learn the role of money in the society, have explained the arcane mysteries of central bank policy, and get an overview of how the financial system works.

41 National Opera Estonia

Estonia pst 4 • www.opera.ee

Tallinn’s main venue for opera and ballet, built in 1906. Built in 1913, the grand, Art Nouveau structure still belongs to the “Estonia” theatrical company. The state concert agency, Eesti Kontsert, is also headquartered here.

42 Hotel Viru & KGB Museum

Viru väljak 4 • www.sokoshotels.fi

In Soviet times it was rumoured that the KGB had files on everyone and that they operated in Viru Hotel. The latter rumour turned out to be true. Those intrigued by the city’s secret history can take a guided tour at this museum on 23rd floor.

43 Rotermann Quarter

The 19th century industrial quarter has been given a modern architectural make-over. Trendy, cultural shopping centre with shops dedicated to cheese and wine.

44 Museum of Estonian Architecture

Ahtri 2 www.arhitektuurimuuseum.ee

Grand limestone structure the Rotermann’s Salt Storage is the ideal place for this museum dedicated to Estonian architecture through the times.

A Tale of Two TallinnsCharmingly Medieval or amazingly modern?

Figuring out which describes Tallinn better would be a tough job. On one hand, the city’s pride and joy is its historic Old Town, an enchanting neighbourhood of centuries—old streets, houses, towers and squares that looks like it was torn right from the pages of a storybook. On the other hand, threaded through that same Old Town and its environs are the cutting-edge restaurants, cafés and clubs that give Tallinn its energy and buzz. Visitors are often amazed by the newness of the place: the gleaming shops, the stylish interiors, the plush hotels. There are also the high-tech solutions that go hand-in-hand with Tallinn life, like free, wireless Internet available practically everywhere and the common practice of paying for parking by mobile phone. This is, after all, the country that invented Skype.

Call it old, new, or some kind of hybrid, Tallinn is an ideal city break destination. For one, it’s a highly compact city, most of which can easily be explored on foot without the need for taxis or buses. Most of the best opportunities for sightseeing, cultural events, dining, shopping, and nightlife are conveniently massed in city centre. And there’s plenty to do here. Anyone coming here for a real break should know that Tallinn is also a great place to do very little: take a quiet stroll through a park, relax in a health spa or—if the weather cooperates—sit on a beach.

Whatever your agenda, whichever of the Tallinns you need—the romantic, Medieval Tallinn or the trendy, high-tech one—the doors are open. Just take your pick and head on in!
