BOARD VOTINGPAPERS
By now all kindergartens should have received voting papers for Board elections to give to your families. Please encourage your families to vote and have your voting box available in a clearly visible area in the kindergarten. If you need more voting papers please contact [email protected] Completed voting papers can be returned by scanning through to us as you receive them or at the end of the week. We need voting papers to be returned to us by end of day on Friday, 16th September.
A reminder that the Annual General Meeting is to be held on Tuesday, 20 September at 7.00 pm at Pataka Museum, 17 Parumoana Street, Porirua. Everyone is most welcome to attend.

APPRAISAL DOCUMENTS ON THE WEB
We know the appraisal documents now on the website are causing a level of frustration out there! Sorry, but please bear with us while we work our way through a technical glitch! In the meantime you are able to type into the forms and save a copy of the document . We will let you know as soon as this problem has been sorted.
Due to the on-going weather issues please do not put any shade sails up before mid November. When you are arranging a contractor to put your shades back up, please contact the original supplier. If you have any questions, please contact Lorraine 2321653 [email protected]

GRANTS
As previously advised Infinity Foundation will now only accept grant applications from He Whānau Manaaki Kindergarten Association and not from individual kindergartens. Jan has access to the online portal and will make application for the kindergartens. So if you are wanting to apply for a grant from Infinity Foundation please send your quotes, resolution and any other supporting documentation to Jan at [email protected] and she will make application for you.
PAY INCREASES FOR TEACHERS
You will probably know that the Ministry of Education made an offer to NZEI (which was accepted) to vary the Kindergarten Teachers, Head Teachers and Senior Teachers’ Collective Agreement (KTCA) to increase all pay rates in the agreement by 2%. This is in line with the clause relating to the unified pay system and so is in response to the increases agreed for Primary Teachers. The increases apply from 2 May 2016 and are due to all teachers who were employed on or after 25 August 2016 (the date the variation was signed). We have received the funding from the Ministry and so we will be paying the new rates in the next pay on 14 September 2016. There is also back-pay due (from 2 May) and this will be paid as a separate pay the day following the normal pay – paid overnight on the Wednesday and will show in most accounts on Thursday 15 September. Many of you will be aware that the Association se-cured a Whānau Ora contract in 2015 to support the aspirations and goals of Pasifika families. We were so successful that the contract was expanded this year to encompass the wider Wellington Region and to cover a larger number of Pasifika families. As a result of this, we have appointed additional Community Navigators. These include Caroline Leo-ta, who was already working with families through our Engaging Priority Families (EPF) contract, Marita Basabas, who will work with families in the central, north and south Wellington areas, Moamoa Faleafa-ga, who will work with families in Porirua, the Kapiti Coast and Horowhenua areas, Nane Lilo who will work with families in the Porirua area, and Mata Taafua who will work with families in the Hutt Val-ley. In addition, Mele Meaofa and Rita Iona who are based in Levin as part of the Horowhenua Pasifika Education Initiative will be supporting families in that area. Over the coming months we will be arranging times for kindergarten teams and the Amataga team to meet and talk through ways Pasifika families in our kindergartens can be supported through this con-tract.
WHANAU ORA STAFF ADDITIONS

It is with sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Telesia Smith, Assistant Head Teacher at Nuanua Kindergarten. Telesia passed away last Friday 2 September after a long battle with cancer. The family service will be held on Sunday night at 6pm and her funeral is on Monday 12 September at 11am at Holy Family Church in Porirua East. Telesia loved being a teacher at Nuanua Kindergarten where she gave her heart and soul to the children and the nurturing of language and culture. Our love and hugs go to her partner, children, grandchildren and extended family, and also to the team and families at Nuanua Kindergarten.

FAREWELL
After a long and varied career with Whānau Manaaki Kindergartens Marg Wadsworth has recently resigned as Senior Head Teacher at Nuanua Kindergarten. Marg started teaching at Mungavin Kindergarten in 1991 and a few years later, after a stint as Relieving HT at Maraeroa, moved to Head Teacher at Waitangirua Kindergarten where she remained before taking over the role of Senior Head Teach-er at Nuanua Kindergarten. We wish Marg all the very best for the future.

QUALITY
EMPOWERING PARENTS TO STUDY
At Taitoko Kindergarten, teachers are always encouraging parents to study and so far three have qualified as early childhood teachers, while another three are studying for teacher qualifications. Acting Head Teacher ,Fiona Hirini, says the kindergarten’s “open door” culture sees parents spending a lot of time in kindergarten, and filling non-teaching roles such as administrative assistant or kaitiaki support, helping in the kitchen. Spending time at the kindergarten means parents take an interest in the teaching role, and are encouraged to work alongside children. Teachers have then suggested studying to gain a qualification in early childhood education, and some parents have been quick to take it up. “We feel so proud – I think the parents have given a wealth of knowledge to us – with their point of view and connections to the community. And we’ve given them a career and a future pathway.” Fiona says it’s been great for the kindergarten, because it’s given them teachers from the community, including Maori, Pasifika and males, who then contribute to the diversity of the qualified teaching workforce. Kindergarten-based students help with the programme, while the teachers support the students in their studies. “They are a part of our team. They play an active role in the centre, so it is win/win.” She says many of the parents may not previously have thought of tertiary study, but the fact that someone sees their potential gives them confidence. Other parents have decided to study in other fields, because of the supportive culture. The early childhood students have studied through Te Rito Maioha, and their ongoing success has enhanced the mana of the kindergarten in the community. “When you get new enrolments, they make the connections – word of mouth is important, words are gold and good words are spoken about us around here.” Fiona encourages other kindergartens to support suitable parents to study teaching. “It makes you feel really good, that you’re giving to your whole community.”
