KHANDALLAH REMEMBERS On Tuesday 11 April we held a dedication ceremony in memory of our loved kaiako Kim Smith who passed away last August Families donated a bench seat in a colour Kim liked and we have placed it in a peaceful place in our garden Children brought flowers from home and placed them on Kimrsquos seat and we sang Tutira Mai one of Kimrsquos favourite songs with the children

Y-MEN GRADUATE

The latest group of Y-Men celebrated their graduation last Thursday These young men have been working in a number of our kindergartens and 6 will continue to do so for a period of time A number of them are looking to take up study toward their Early Childhood degrees We wish them all well in their future endeavours

FROM STUDENT TEACHER TO MOVIE MAKER

Discovery Kindergarten currently have a student teacher her name is Erin Laas Erin has made an amazing shadow puppet theatre and has recorded a stunning video of it It is the story of how the kiwi lost itrsquos wings She was inspired by our Ngahere Tamariki bush programme It is a fantastic video and the team at Discovery thought other kindergartenrsquos would enjoy it also It can be viewed at httpswwwyoutubecomwatchv=A_saeTJKfgA

NEW MURAL FOR TORU FETU As a leaving gift to Toru Fetu Kindergarten Liam Murphy one of our original Y-Men worked with a local Wainuiomata artist Aidan Walbaekken to design a mural This is a beautiful mural that will be enjoyed for years to come

BERHAMPORE CELEBRATES 100 YEARS A powhiri opened our event with Lou being a major support and advisor for the process Jamie a teacher and the Kapa Haka group from Berhampore School acted as our communityrsquos manuhiri along with others from the community Our girls performed the karanga and one of our parents Brendon and our teacher Archy spoke on our behalf Our parents and tamariki sang Te Aroha and Tutira Mai Nga Iwi Jamie replied and the kapa haka group sang their waiata Food and drink was shared after the hongi and the tapu was lifted Then the festivities began Our eldest guest came as a child in 1936 There was lots of animated chatting and a beautiful buzz of conversation as people remembered their time here as students and parents An art work of handprints detailed peoplersquos attendance A memorial wall of plaques (dated 1928 1968 and 2017) was unveiled by Justin Lester our Wellington mayor and a 100th birthday cake was cut Finally a time capsule from 5 years ago was dug up all in lovely condition and bringing back lots of memories The children had a wonderful time with a bouncy castle and various kindy activities especially popular was the face paint by Amelie Lisa and Nadia Our grateful thanks go to our organisers Jess Becs Kerry and our parent committee

When the Education Council replaced the Teachers Council in 2015 it wasnrsquot just a change of name With substantially increased functions and obligations the Education Council exists to elevate the status of the teaching profession

Wersquore working to deliver new services to support teachers in their professional development leadership and teaching practice consistent with our statutory functions We will also deliver more services online and provide more robust effective and efficient disciplinary services The Education Council is funded by teachersrsquo fees Starting this week we will be consulting teachers about a proposed increase in these fees The fees teachers pay to the Council have remained the same since 2010 and donrsquot reflect the services it provides to the profession Without an increase the Council will face a $9595 million annual shortfall from July 2019 Before decisions are made on any changes to the fees we need to consult with those who will be affected by the proposed change We need to hear from the profession on the proposed change The consultation document provides the relevant information on the proposed fee increase Please provide feedback on the proposed changes by or before 5pm on 5 May 2017 Yoursquoll find the document and ways to provide feedback on our website at wwweducationcouncilorgnzfeesconsultation Once the consultation has closed the governing board of the Council will consider teachersrsquo feedback before deciding whether any changes are made to the fees We are proposing that any changes to fees will not take effect until 1 July 2019 If you have questions about the fees consultation please contact us at feesconsultationeducationcouncilorgnz Nga mihi Graham Stoop Chief Executive

Reawakening Visual art practices in early childhood

This interactive series is for teachers to reignite their imagination and creativity within Visual art The visual arts offer a way in which children can express their growing awareness of themselves and the worlds in which they live The teacher plays a significant role in childrenrsquos visual and aesthetic learning it is more than just setting out resources for the children to explore The teachersrsquo attitude knowledge skills and dispositions influence the way they value and engage with visual arts in early childhood Teachers are required to think in through and within visual art To be able to be an artist themselves teachers need to ensure their own mean-making curiosity and interests within Visual art are flourishing to actively engage and teach artistic skills to young children

KHANDALLAH REMEMBERS On Tuesday 11 April we held a dedication ceremony in memory of our loved kaiako Kim Smith who passed away last August Families donated a bench seat in a colour Kim liked and we have placed it in a peaceful place in our garden Children brought flowers from home and placed them on Kimrsquos seat and we sang Tutira Mai one of Kimrsquos favourite songs with the children

The latest group of Y-Men celebrated their graduation last Thursday These young men have been working in a number of our kindergartens and 6 will continue to do so for a period of time A number of them are looking to take up study toward their Early Childhood degrees We wish them all well in their future endeavours

Discovery Kindergarten currently have a student teacher her name is Erin Laas Erin has made an amazing shadow puppet theatre and has recorded a stunning video of it It is the story of how the kiwi lost itrsquos wings She was inspired by our Ngahere Tamariki bush programme It is a fantastic video and the team at Discovery thought other kindergartenrsquos would enjoy it also It can be viewed at httpswwwyoutubecomwatchv=A_saeTJKfgA

NEW MURAL FOR TORU FETU As a leaving gift to Toru Fetu Kindergarten Liam Murphy one of our original Y-Men worked with a local Wainuiomata artist Aidan Walbaekken to design a mural This is a beautiful mural that will be enjoyed for years to come

BERHAMPORE CELEBRATES 100 YEARS A powhiri opened our event with Lou being a major support and advisor for the process Jamie a teacher and the Kapa Haka group from Berhampore School acted as our communityrsquos manuhiri along with others from the community Our girls performed the karanga and one of our parents Brendon and our teacher Archy spoke on our behalf Our parents and tamariki sang Te Aroha and Tutira Mai Nga Iwi Jamie replied and the kapa haka group sang their waiata Food and drink was shared after the hongi and the tapu was lifted Then the festivities began Our eldest guest came as a child in 1936 There was lots of animated chatting and a beautiful buzz of conversation as people remembered their time here as students and parents An art work of handprints detailed peoplersquos attendance A memorial wall of plaques (dated 1928 1968 and 2017) was unveiled by Justin Lester our Wellington mayor and a 100th birthday cake was cut Finally a time capsule from 5 years ago was dug up all in lovely condition and bringing back lots of memories The children had a wonderful time with a bouncy castle and various kindy activities especially popular was the face paint by Amelie Lisa and Nadia Our grateful thanks go to our organisers Jess Becs Kerry and our parent committee

When the Education Council replaced the Teachers Council in 2015 it wasnrsquot just a change of name With substantially increased functions and obligations the Education Council exists to elevate the status of the teaching profession

Reawakening Visual art practices in early childhood

This interactive series is for teachers to reignite their imagination and creativity within Visual art The visual arts offer a way in which children can express their growing awareness of themselves and the worlds in which they live The teacher plays a significant role in childrenrsquos visual and aesthetic learning it is more than just setting out resources for the children to explore The teachersrsquo attitude knowledge skills and dispositions influence the way they value and engage with visual arts in early childhood Teachers are required to think in through and within visual art To be able to be an artist themselves teachers need to ensure their own mean-making curiosity and interests within Visual art are flourishing to actively engage and teach artistic skills to young children

This interactive series is for teachers to reignite their imagination and creativity within Visual art The visual arts offer a way in which children can express their growing awareness of themselves and the worlds in which they live The teacher plays a significant role in childrenrsquos visual and aesthetic learning it is more than just setting out resources for the children to explore The teachersrsquo attitude knowledge skills and dispositions influence the way they value and engage with visual arts in early childhood Teachers are required to think in through and within visual art To be able to be an artist themselves teachers need to ensure their own mean-making curiosity and interests within Visual art are flourishing to actively engage and teach artistic skills to young children

KHANDALLAH REMEMBERS On Tuesday 11 April we held a dedication ceremony in memory of our loved kaiako Kim Smith who passed away last August Families donated a bench seat in a colour Kim liked and we have placed it in a peaceful place in our garden Children brought flowers from home and placed them on Kimrsquos seat and we sang Tutira Mai one of Kimrsquos favourite songs with the children

The latest group of Y-Men celebrated their graduation last Thursday These young men have been working in a number of our kindergartens and 6 will continue to do so for a period of time A number of them are looking to take up study toward their Early Childhood degrees We wish them all well in their future endeavours

Discovery Kindergarten currently have a student teacher her name is Erin Laas Erin has made an amazing shadow puppet theatre and has recorded a stunning video of it It is the story of how the kiwi lost itrsquos wings She was inspired by our Ngahere Tamariki bush programme It is a fantastic video and the team at Discovery thought other kindergartenrsquos would enjoy it also It can be viewed at httpswwwyoutubecomwatchv=A_saeTJKfgA

NEW MURAL FOR TORU FETU As a leaving gift to Toru Fetu Kindergarten Liam Murphy one of our original Y-Men worked with a local Wainuiomata artist Aidan Walbaekken to design a mural This is a beautiful mural that will be enjoyed for years to come

BERHAMPORE CELEBRATES 100 YEARS A powhiri opened our event with Lou being a major support and advisor for the process Jamie a teacher and the Kapa Haka group from Berhampore School acted as our communityrsquos manuhiri along with others from the community Our girls performed the karanga and one of our parents Brendon and our teacher Archy spoke on our behalf Our parents and tamariki sang Te Aroha and Tutira Mai Nga Iwi Jamie replied and the kapa haka group sang their waiata Food and drink was shared after the hongi and the tapu was lifted Then the festivities began Our eldest guest came as a child in 1936 There was lots of animated chatting and a beautiful buzz of conversation as people remembered their time here as students and parents An art work of handprints detailed peoplersquos attendance A memorial wall of plaques (dated 1928 1968 and 2017) was unveiled by Justin Lester our Wellington mayor and a 100th birthday cake was cut Finally a time capsule from 5 years ago was dug up all in lovely condition and bringing back lots of memories The children had a wonderful time with a bouncy castle and various kindy activities especially popular was the face paint by Amelie Lisa and Nadia Our grateful thanks go to our organisers Jess Becs Kerry and our parent committee

When the Education Council replaced the Teachers Council in 2015 it wasnrsquot just a change of name With substantially increased functions and obligations the Education Council exists to elevate the status of the teaching profession

Wersquore working to deliver new services to support teachers in their professional development leadership and teaching practice consistent with our statutory functions We will also deliver more services online and provide more robust effective and efficient disciplinary services The Education Council is funded by teachersrsquo fees Starting this week we will be consulting teachers about a proposed increase in these fees The fees teachers pay to the Council have remained the same since 2010 and donrsquot reflect the services it provides to the profession Without an increase the Council will face a $9595 million annual shortfall from July 2019 Before decisions are made on any changes to the fees we need to consult with those who will be affected by the proposed change We need to hear from the profession on the proposed change The consultation document provides the relevant information on the proposed fee increase Please provide feedback on the proposed changes by or before 5pm on 5 May 2017 Yoursquoll find the document and ways to provide feedback on our website at wwweducationcouncilorgnzfeesconsultation Once the consultation has closed the governing board of the Council will consider teachersrsquo feedback before deciding whether any changes are made to the fees We are proposing that any changes to fees will not take effect until 1 July 2019 If you have questions about the fees consultation please contact us at feesconsultationeducationcouncilorgnz Nga mihi Graham Stoop Chief Executive

This interactive series is for teachers to reignite their imagination and creativity within Visual art The visual arts offer a way in which children can express their growing awareness of themselves and the worlds in which they live The teacher plays a significant role in childrenrsquos visual and aesthetic learning it is more than just setting out resources for the children to explore The teachersrsquo attitude knowledge skills and dispositions influence the way they value and engage with visual arts in early childhood Teachers are required to think in through and within visual art To be able to be an artist themselves teachers need to ensure their own mean-making curiosity and interests within Visual art are flourishing to actively engage and teach artistic skills to young children

FROM STUDENT TEACHER TO MOVIE MAKER

Discovery Kindergarten currently have a student teacher her name is Erin Laas Erin has made an amazing shadow puppet theatre and has recorded a stunning video of it It is the story of how the kiwi lost itrsquos wings She was inspired by our Ngahere Tamariki bush programme It is a fantastic video and the team at Discovery thought other kindergartenrsquos would enjoy it also It can be viewed at httpswwwyoutubecomwatchv=A_saeTJKfgA

NEW MURAL FOR TORU FETU As a leaving gift to Toru Fetu Kindergarten Liam Murphy one of our original Y-Men worked with a local Wainuiomata artist Aidan Walbaekken to design a mural This is a beautiful mural that will be enjoyed for years to come

BERHAMPORE CELEBRATES 100 YEARS A powhiri opened our event with Lou being a major support and advisor for the process Jamie a teacher and the Kapa Haka group from Berhampore School acted as our communityrsquos manuhiri along with others from the community Our girls performed the karanga and one of our parents Brendon and our teacher Archy spoke on our behalf Our parents and tamariki sang Te Aroha and Tutira Mai Nga Iwi Jamie replied and the kapa haka group sang their waiata Food and drink was shared after the hongi and the tapu was lifted Then the festivities began Our eldest guest came as a child in 1936 There was lots of animated chatting and a beautiful buzz of conversation as people remembered their time here as students and parents An art work of handprints detailed peoplersquos attendance A memorial wall of plaques (dated 1928 1968 and 2017) was unveiled by Justin Lester our Wellington mayor and a 100th birthday cake was cut Finally a time capsule from 5 years ago was dug up all in lovely condition and bringing back lots of memories The children had a wonderful time with a bouncy castle and various kindy activities especially popular was the face paint by Amelie Lisa and Nadia Our grateful thanks go to our organisers Jess Becs Kerry and our parent committee

When the Education Council replaced the Teachers Council in 2015 it wasnrsquot just a change of name With substantially increased functions and obligations the Education Council exists to elevate the status of the teaching profession

This interactive series is for teachers to reignite their imagination and creativity within Visual art The visual arts offer a way in which children can express their growing awareness of themselves and the worlds in which they live The teacher plays a significant role in childrenrsquos visual and aesthetic learning it is more than just setting out resources for the children to explore The teachersrsquo attitude knowledge skills and dispositions influence the way they value and engage with visual arts in early childhood Teachers are required to think in through and within visual art To be able to be an artist themselves teachers need to ensure their own mean-making curiosity and interests within Visual art are flourishing to actively engage and teach artistic skills to young children

Jo Dean has recently lectured in Teacher Education at the Institute of Education Massey University Palmerston North She is an early childhood trained teacher and regularly works alongside teachers young children and their whanau Jo is currently undertaking her PhD which is investigating lsquoHow young children and teachers co-create meaning when art installations serve as a catalyst for aesthetic explorationrsquo
