AO NANG BEACH

at 20km from Krabi Town is the most developed of Krabi’s beaches; a long stretch

of white sand with limestone karsts as a backdrop. All of your accommodation,

shopping and service needs are found here. This is the hub from which to plan your trip at sea and to the nearby islands on a typical

longtail boat.

NOPPHARAT THARA BEACH

just around the corner from Ao Nang, is 3km long yet still undeveloped, with only a few resorts and bars. Attractive because of its natural setting, this is where local youngsters and families gather at sunset

and on weekends with picnics. Savour some local Muslim snacks at the beach stalls, or fill yourself with seafood in the local restaurants at the very end of the beach,

near the Noppharat Thara National Park headquarters. At low tide, walk out together

with millions of small crabs on the sandy pathways to the small islands near the beach.

KLONG MUANG BEACH

is a further 20km away from Ao Nang; it is the up-market side of Krabi, the place to be

if you are after a peaceful holiday. Catering to families and couples, it is here that you really get that well deserved repose, surrounded by

pristine nature.

RAILAY AND TONSAI BEACHES

are split and separated from Krabi and Ao Nang by monumental limestone mountains.

Railay has two sides, east and west, and its settings are simply marvelous: crystal clear

waters, pure sandy beaches, lush mountains, and rocky islands emerging from the sea.

Both beaches are known the world over for their majestic climbing routes. They can only be reached by boat, a 15-minute ride from Ao Nang or 30 minutes from Krabi Town. Enjoy

a cocktail in one of the beach bars, visit the Phranang Cave, challenge yourself on a rock

climbing or cliff jumping course (yes, into the sea!), hike the limestone massif to a lagoon

and a viewpoint, or simply chill out.

KOH LANTA BEACHES

have a wide selection of resorts for all tastes and pockets. Lanta Yai island has long

stretches of gleaming white sandy beaches and shallow emerald waters. Lined with

tropical vegetation, a private spot is never more than a short walk away on a southern

beach at Lanta Yai. 

TUBKAEK BEACH

Another real place to hide away; long, clean and powerful, the area boasts breathtaking views over the Koh Hong archipelago and

provides for wonderfully charming sunsets. From Tubkeak beach you can venture inside the National Park and try the nature trail to

one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Krabi.

KOH PODA

This is the iconic island of Krabi and the first and most dramatic one you seem from

Ao Nang beach. Hop on a longtail boat - the local wooden boats with their picturesque

prow and sail away surrounded by turquoise waters.

CHICKEN ISLAND

This should be next on your list as it is right next to Koh Poda. From the right angle when

passing Chicken Island (Koh Chicken) you can catch a glimpse of a chickens neck and head, some would argue more like that of

a turkey but it’s up to you. You know those postcards with people walking on a sandy

isthmus that connects to another island? Yep, here the second island is Koh Tub and is only

accessible at low tide.

THE KOH HONG

This island archipelago demands everyone’s attention as it is one of the highlight of

Krabi province. The Archipelago, a group of limestone islands with many a hidden caves and lagoons make it perfect for snorkeling

and exploration. Make sure you stop at Lading island after Koh Hong as it is much less visited and sports a blend of both lush

jungle and tropical waters.

KOH PHI PHI

Private bays, limestone cliffs, waters rich in marine life and caves where swallow’s nests are harvested are all here on the island that

Leonardo Di Caprio once rolled his hot bod in while filming “The beach” at the now

iconic Maya Bay.

KOH JUM & KOH SIBOYA

Both are unspoiled tropical hide-aways that have a unique atmosphere. Tune in to the slow culture here, imbibe the peace, and

recharge your batteries with the soundtrack of lapping waves.

KOH LANTA

the developing island at the southern end of the province known for its prime sunset

viewing spots , heaps of activities, and glimpses into sea gypsy life, is where you will meet nature and tradition.  It’s also a National Park area that comprises many

different islands surrounded by coral reefs, such as Koh Ngai, Koh Mook and the remote

Koh Rok.

LIMESTONE MOUNTAINS

or karsts characterize most of the inland Krabi area, the most spectacular being the crags of Sai Tai. Susaan Hoi is a 40

million year-old seashell cemetery; once a large swamp where freshwater crustaceans

proliferated, today it’s home to 40 centimeter thick, shell encrusted limestone slabs, a

geological uniqueness not far from Ao Nang.

KHAO PHANOM BENCHA NATIONAL PARK

at 20km from Krabi Town, comprises waterfalls, streams, lush forests and caves. It is home to all kind of flora and wildlife and to the highest mountain in the region from which it takes the name. One of the features

of the park is Huay Toh Waterfall where water runs down onto several huge pools that

you can swim in.

TARNBOK KHORANEE NATIONAL PARK

in the north of the region, consists of limestone mountains, verdant tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands. It is well known

for its different species of trees growing around a large natural crystal clear pool, and

for the hundreds of birds’ species.

SA MORAKOT, THE EMERALD POOL

is a natural wonder: a pond of turquoise water with an average temperature of 30-

40C, fed by a hot spring in the middle of the jungle.

FELLING OF ANCIENT TREE SPARKS OUTRAGE IN KRABI

PUT OUT YOUR BUTTS AND FINISH YOUR MEAL

The recent felling of a giant 143-year-old tree to be used in art work by two renowned artists as a permanent feature in Krabi town has sparked fierce debate on the social media.

The 25-metre-tall ma haard tree was felled last month as part of a Krabi municipality project that began on Feb 1. The project’s aim is to create art works in the form of sculpture for the Andaman Art Museum in Krabi town and at the city’s entrance. Tourism is also one of the projects objectives.

The tree was cut into five pieces of five metres in length each. They are to be sculpted by National Artist Kamol Tassanachalee and Japanese sculptor Katsumi Mukai.

Suwan Mukhura, the tree’s owner, said he had planned to fell the giant tree to build a house for his son, but decided to give it to the city as he felt it could benefit the public.

Facebook user and artist Akradej Chakjinda, who was the first to share the photos, said he understood that the tree had an owner but wondered if it was necessary for the artists to create works from a 143-year-old tree.

Another user, Uh Kanittha Puangsri, suggested the artists should be using a large dead tree instead of a live old one. Some questioned whether the sculptures were worth the destruction of the tree and whether it would benefit tourism

Supporters of the project slammed the protesters for being “sensitive conservationists” as the tree was personal property.

The tree’s owner said he was surprised at the online criticism and urged the protesters to pay more attention to the problem of tree poaching in the province.

Phuket has a new decree that bans smoking and eating food on all beaches in the province. The new law goes into effect this year and will be enforced by police at each beach.  The use of beverages is still allowed freely on the beaches, which makes one scratch their head, since this new law could, in effect, result in a number of intoxicated tourists roaming the beaches. This is part of an effort is to curb trash buildup on the beaches, however it comes at an awkward time in Phuket, since just last year, Phuket’s Governor Nisit Jansomwong, banned the use of beach chairs on all beaches in town. This was a much-criticized act that left tourists feeling particularly discriminated against.  Many people enjoy having the comfort of a traditional white beach chair for their treasured sun-bathing-vacation experiences. Don’t worry though, there is still hope - towels and beach mats are allowed for visitors to use.

POLICE ORDERED TO TAKE IT EASY ON FOREIGNERS

Recent orders have been passed down informing all police officers of the Kingdom to abstain from searching foreigners without probable cause and without due process. This is all due in part to the increasing number of police harassment cases that have been springing up throughout Thailand. Police Col. Khajohnpong Jitpakpoom, the newly appointed police superintendent, gave the order: “Unless a foreigner is acting suspiciously, all officers are prohibited from conducting random searches.” Also added to this new decree: “If a foreigner is found to be startled or unsettled by the presence of a police officer, and a search is found to be necessary, the search must be conducted in a public area with witnesses present.”

PINEAPPLE ADORNING HER CROWN OF GLORY…

Unbeknownst to many, the pineapple (or money for that matter) does not grow on trees. I

can only imagine an orchard of pineapple trees drooping over in agony as its branches wrestle to hold the weight of a densely succulent bromeliad. Nature knew what it was doing when it created an environment for this jewel like masterpiece to be grown from a plant. Each and every pineapple, unlike most fruit, is grown from its own plant. They are not too difficult to grow but can take up to 2-3 years to produce only one single pineapple. For many, the beauty of the plant itself, reaching a diameter of 3-4 feet, is enough to endure a season of wait and gloating. In time, a beautiful flower will grow in the center of the plant and eventually be replaced by a single glorious pineapple.

I love taking an early morning run to begin my fitness regimen for the day. Having lived in S. E. Asia for almost a decade, I’ve had many an opportunity to witness this ‘golden fruit’ nestled within the pineries, as I glide by in the silence of the early morning hours.

Pineapples became known as an extravagant and exotic fruit, only served at the most lavish and prestigious of banquets. The pineapple received its name from the Spanish word “piña” (because of its miniature look alike the pinecone) and the English word “apple” (because of its sweetness). The pineapple known for its prickly skin and a reputation for being laborious to peel can actually be gained access to quite easily. I’ve been to many fruit stalls and witnessed the vendor slicing his or her way through this reptilian looking skin with ease. Simply slicing off the bottom and the crown, then quickly working their way around, removing the skin and the many eyes.

Unlike the days of old, the pineapple can now take center stage in any home, both for the rich and for those watching their purse strings. There’s good news hailing the pineapple. The nutritional value in the pineapple is something worth bowing down to. It’s not surprising that she is known for adorning her glory; why?From the very top of her stem to the core of this fruit, the pineapple has a complex enzyme known as Bromelain. Bromelain in its natural form is only found in the pineapple; specifically within its stem and core. Bromelain has a variety of specific health benefits; such as reducing inflammation, excessive blood coagulation and certain tumor growths. There are other amazing nutritional components held within. KAYAKING

A 1,237-step climb to astounding views, the hike is a mixed bag of emotions: exhaustion, exhilaration, and bewilderment. The hilltop temple is worth the effort for the 360 view of the surrounding countryside laden with swathes of lush greenery by the monsoon rains. Although there are no actual tigers at the temple, there is monkey business (hold on to your cameras!). Visit the temple at the bottom, built into a cave, and for a small donation receive a blessing and a special magical bracelet from a resident monk or nun, sure to secure prosperity and health.

Rent a motorbike and enjoy a highly scenic drive through local villages to Tha Pom Klong Song Nam, where freshwater and seawater from nearby mangrove forests meet. Walk through the nature preserve and admire the beautiful blue water and maze of mangrove, and end it with a cool dip in the natural pool at the end. By expanding the high-speed, low-altitude com-petition to a field of 14 pilots from 11 countries, the race format has been revamped to heighten the competition and will now feature seven head-to-head race battles in the opening Round of 14. Then in the Round of 8, seven winners of the Round of 14 plus the fastest loser from the first seven races will square off

against each other in a second round of head-to-head, winner-take-all knock-out races. The four winners of the Round of 8 will race against the clock in the Final Four round to claim a podium place. “This new format will be a big challenge for the pilots to fly more precisely and better than ever before and we’re confident it will make the Red Bull Air Race more exciting and competitive,” said Jim DiMatteo, Race Director of the Red Bull Air Race. “With a larger field, we were looking for ways to make the racing even more competitive and more thrilling for the fans watching at the racetrack or on television. The pilots know that just one little mistake in the Round of 14 or Round of 8 can cost them dearly.” The eighth Red Bull Air Race World Championship, which kicks off with the season opener in Abu Dhabi on February 13-14, has added two new pilots, Francois Le Vot (FRA) and Juan Velarde (ESP), moving up from the Challenger Cup to race against the 12 returning pilots. Another new feature on race day in 2015 will be the Challenger Cup, designed in 2014 to give promising pilots the chance to gain racing experience under conditions with slightly less pressure. In old-school Thailand there were five things a Thai man could do with his life:

1. Become a Muay Thai fighter - by the Age of 10 a young man could often have had over a hundred fights!

2. Join the military - at the Age of 18 a young man could give two years of army service. After this he could decide to stay in the military or return to public service.

3. Go to college or university – a young man in his twenties could seek public education or enroll for education in the military.

4. Start a business or begin a government program

5. Become a monk - the highest act of service to Thailand, where a man would actually give up everything he has and join the monkhood. Usually there would be a funeral service for him, as it is considered that he is dying from his regular life and being reborn as a monk.

Now in modern Thailand, men are not limited to the above paths and most communities do not have temples as the center of villages. However, today Muay Thai champions and trainers are often teachers in Thailand’s educational system. Muay Thai is a martial art that helps keep Thai people positive and disciplined.

Many Asian countries have similar nationalized martial arts such as:China (Kung Fu)Japan (Karate) Korea (Tae Kwon Do)In each country, masters teach these martial arts as a foundation for their society. I encourage all readers to experience Thailand’s national sport of Muay Thai. YANGON IS A CITY UNDERGOING RAPID CHANGE, BUT IT STILL HAS THE OLD FEELING LEFT THAT HAVE DISAPPEARED FROM MANY OTHER CITIES. THE JOURNEY FROM THE AIRPORT TAKES ABOUT 30 MINUTES DEPENDING ON TRAFFIC THAT USUALLY FLOATS ON REALLY WELL. SCOOTERS ARE PROHIBITED AND PUBLIC TRANSPORT IS HEAVILY OVERLOADED, SO IT’S BEST TO TAKE A TAXI. THE FARE IS ABOUT 10 DOLLARS FROM THE AIRPORT.

The Sule Pagoda is located in the city center. Here is also to the Bogyoke Aung San Market (Scott Market) a giant bazaar full with antiques, handicrafts, jewellery, art, clothes and much, much more.

From the center you can then take a walk through Chinatown and down along the riverside and as in a time capsule see more old colonial buildings still standing than in any other Southeast Asian city.

You can also stroll around the two lakes resident to the city. Kandawgyi Lake is surrounded by a nature park near the Schwedagon Pagoda. At the Inya Lake Park, a famous location for romance in the local culture, you can see many of the Yangon University students meeting. On the other side of the Lake is the famous residences of Aung San Suu Kyi.

SCWEDAGON PAGODA

This stunning gold-coated pagoda rises from a hill in central Yangon and is visible from many parts of the town. It is the most important religious site in the country and there is probably no counterpart in either Burma or the rest of the world. There is a mix of international tourists with the local population as well as people from all over Myanmar. Keep in mind that you need covering clothes - shorts and tank-top is not OK.

One good idea is to visit the pagoda in the evening, when it is no longer so hot and crowded. It is open untill 10:00 PM, The light, the buildings and Buddha-statues creates a wonderful sense of serenity.

Yangon is one of the world’s safest cities, due to a strong Buddhist culture and severe punishment for crime. Previously you could perhaps be cheated in a black currency exchange, but even this has decreased.

Now there are more and more ATM machines, but it is safest to bring US dollars in both small and large denominations. Higher denominations provide better exchange rates and lower denominations can be used to pay with. Even if Kyat is the official currency and is most used. Cash is king as few places take still credit cards.

INLE LAKE AND HEHO

From our hotel which is built on stilts like most hotels and houses here, we head out on the stunning lake, surrounded by lush green mountains. Various golden Stupas dot the landscape.Here lives the Intha people, and with them their floating gardens.

In the various villages on the lake, there are monasteries, temples, silversmiths, weavers and many other handicraft workshops to visit. The long-necked ladies, Paduang, who extend their necks throughout their lives using metal rings are iconic residents.

During the boat trip, we meet many fishermen rowing with a special technique. Standing on one leg, rowing the boat with the other leg and arm, while fishing with the free hand.

After a full day, we then returned to enjoy a stunning sunset over the lake. If you want to enjoy a smoke this is the perfect time for a Burmese cigar - a cherrot - in a cosy chair on the Hotel porch.

A MARKET DAY IN HEHO

After a day on Inle Lake, it might be fun to find something where you are not likely to bump into so many other tourists. If you have the time, we recommend a visit to the traditional Heho Cattle Market.

The market is not far from the airport, and here there is much more than cattle. This is where the tribal people from many of the villages in the area come to sell what they produce, and also take the opportunity to stock up on other supplies.

Although we visited many markets in Southeast Asia, this is a totally unique experience. This market will excite all your senses - that we can assure.

CHAN A TREASURE ON AO NANG BEACH

But there is one small, inauspicious hut just before this temple that seems to stand out. Arrows pointing to “Mr. Chan” have always tweaked my curiosity, until a friend told me about him.

In his tourist business, one of his clients from Russia had chronic back pain due to a spinal hernia. He had seen many doctors back home who all explained that the only thing they could offer was surgery. This unfortunately, was not a guarantee, and his problem could likely return. He opted out of that and just lived with the pain. One year, while vacationing here, this man saw Mr. Chan, and after only a few treatments, his problem was cured – GONE!!!! This man now comes to Ao Nang for vacation every year, primarily to see Mr. Chan. He has been returning to Ao Nang for 4 years now and his hernia hasn’t returned. I am always thrilled to meet healers like this, because I know that there are many successful non-conventional healing techniques out there – more than any one of us is aware of. I made an appointment with Mr. Chan, to get a tune up of my own, and I found that yes, his technique is very different and effective. Nang has been a growing place for

some time now. The number of resorts are increasing, the number of restaurants are on the rise, and of course the number of visitors is booming. According to TAT (Thailand Authority of Tourism) the number of visitors to Krabi has nearly doubled in the last 4 years and each year sees more visitors then the last. With the increase of foot traffic into the area, comes the inevitable added waste generated. Both in terms of contained waste (waste water, garbage inside the resorts etc.) and also uncontrolled waste (plastic bags in the ocean, cigarettes butts on the beach and general trash which doesn’t make it to the waste bins). Trash Hero Thailand was started as a means to combat this growing issue across the country. Having their primary base in Satun on the island of Koh Lipe, Trash Hero has become a growing part of the community on Koh Lipe since 2013. Drawing in many of the locals to help with the weekly cleanups, Trash Hero has attracted the support from a number of resorts and businesses to sponsor the cleanups. Now that the beaches in Koh Lipe are clean, this team of motivated and inspiring individuals has decided to spring offshoots, in neighboring Krabi. Lucky us!

Colin Valnion, a native of Canada but with residence in Thailand for 4 years now, is leading the Krabi efforts. “When I came to Nopparat Thara Beach to see the Season Opening Festival (also called the Burt-Faa Festival), I noticed afterwards that there was a lot of plastic bottles, bags, cigarette butts and general trash all over the place. I thought, ‘this needs to be cleaned up’, so I contacted Trash Hero and asked if we could start an Ao Nang branch. They said they would be delighted to have me start their secondary branch after Koh Lipe.” “I then contacted a number of local government officials to help organize the event and possibly invite some school groups to participate. The officials were great, in addition to organizing a large group of school children, there were about 20 officials who joined the effort as well.” Colin explains. Trash Hero Krabi hosted its first official cleanup at the end of January. Organizing the event with local officials and with local media such as Krabi Magazine and Facebook. The turnout was tremendous, with over 150 people coming to the first cleanup and collected just over 300 kilograms of trash from the Nopparat Thara area. The efforts have continued every Sunday since then, and in 4 weeks of work, Ao Nang Trash Hero has collected 1255 kilos of trash. The turnout has been continually high and the community support has been significant.

Thai - Whoai ChonThe whole image of bull-fighting conjures up richly dressed Spanish matadors in red capes, fighting bulls to the death for the entertainment of the masses. Yet here in southern Thailand the bulls do not fight people to the death. They fight other bulls, and it’s not to the death. Pushing and wrestling in a stadium arena to get dominance is the contest, and eventually one bull proves that he is the best in this three day contest.

In this rural setting, forty minutes outside of Krabi-town, lies an arena so rustic and makeshift it seems of an earlier era. The outer walls of the stadium are rusted, made of corrugated tin and standing no more than eight feet high with wooden boards that patch the whole stadium together, creating a flimsy looking wall. Parking is like at a county fair; temporarily set up on a grassy area near the stadium and the bull stalls. The arena is made from a variety of tree posts buried into the ground, some of which are tilted, looking like a makeshift structure. Tire treads that have been cut lengthwise are used to stabilize the poles and create the arena enclosure, much like ropes in a Muay Thai boxing ring. The stadium seating is newer than the stadium itself, which, from a quick scan, has room for 800 to 1000 people. Viewing is good from every seat, however once the bulls come out for each match, no one is sitting. The ground level area between the arena and the seating is large enough for people to walk around, mingle and place their bets. All this fun social contact offers a splendid, rancorous and social afternoon for everyone. The energetic crowd feeds the spirit of the bullfight.

These bulls are large, tipping the scales at 500-600 kilos, and standing at their haunches, roughly 1.75 meters (5-5.5 feet). Their muscles are pronounced all over their bodies. Their necks are especially impressive, having to hold up a large, bony head and horns, and use them to batter their opponents. The horns come in different shapes and angles, some wider apart then others, and the length, which can range from 25-30 cm, is nothing to remind one of the Texas longhorns. The variations in their black/brown hide colors helps watchers distinguish them in the ring.

Several handlers and corner men lead the bulls into the ring. Two of them are the rope holders who are able to control the bull by pulling on the rope that is threaded through a nose ring. The bulls seem tame before the match starts. At the start of the match, the bull is brought over to one side of the ring where he is scrubbed down with ornamental liquids, leaving white spots on his head and shoulders. Their horns are wrapped with white tape, and bananas are given to them as a snack before the fight. The handlers then bring them to the center of the ring to quickly face- off. As soon as the bulls are positioned to butt heads, the nose-ring cords are pulled away and the match begins. This is when the crowd gets into it, yelling and cheering their bull on. Spectators would exchange chatter about this move or that push, or the constant pressure applied by their bull, not much different than any sporting event. Betting and bettors were worked

through the crowds. There were no betting windows or an odds board to see where the favorite stands. In place of that were individuals who would stand at a section and scream out odds for the fight. If you don’t understand Thai, you can only guess what the shouts and phrases of these hawkers mean, but it is still colorful to watch. The bulls have certain techniques when they fight. One clever bull broke away

after contact and rolled around to the side of his opponent, in a grazing-type relaxed mode and then attacked his rival on the side. The other bull was keen to his charade and swung his head around to resume head-to-head contact. The sneaky bull eventually lost. Some of these matches are all about who can last longer with all the pushing and head butting. One match clearly showed off the stronger neck muscles and size of one bull that could easily push his opponent around. A referee oversees the contest and blows his whistle when he feels there is not enough action. If this should happen, one brave soul needs to hook the bulls with a bamboo stick and direct them closer together, face to face. Our normal idea of a referee is of someone who breaks up violent encounters, but here, the referee wants to encourage it. If these bulls just hang around at a safe distance from each other then nothing will happen to entertain the crowds. In practice fights, the bulls have wrapped or flattened horns, to limit the chance of injury. On the day of the actual bullfights however, the bulls have pointed and fearsome-looking horns. A hit from these horns could easily, gouge a man or leave a good scrape in the tough hides of another bull.

Each month, this bullfighting goes on for three straight days. The winners of the first day battle the winners on the second day, and the third days contest is a contest of the remaining two winning bulls. That’s when the betting gets fiercer and the odds fluctuate constantly. These bulls go through a lot of pushing and head butting, so I can only imagine what they must feel like on that third day. The overall winner is the one with the stamina or the heart to continue the battle.

You may wonder, as these fights start, how do they stop, and who is deemed the winner when no one controls the bulls. It is the bulls themselves who decide when the contest is over. Eventually one bull, in exhaustion, quits by running away. Wouldn’t you be too if you were being pushed and had to push back for 40 minutes? The tricky part was when the fight is over, the handlers have to chase down their bull. They have to grasp the bull-ring with a hook on a 3 meter long bamboo rod, while keeping a safe distance from a bull who’s all riled up. The handlers now need to thread the rope onto the nose ring and lead the bull away. Before exiting, the handlers give bananas and throw cool buckets of water over the bulls to cool them off. Like any event in Thailand, food, clothing and merchandise is sold inside and outside as the stadium. All varieties of food are available. There is soup, noodles and chicken for a small cost. Everyone is friendly and enjoys seeing a foreigner in this primarily-Thai-event. The strange looks and jokes that surfaced by my presence were all in good fun. Communication on my part was limited, but I still found conversation with some, who, with their broken English loved to talk about the bullfighting and who were interested in where I was from.

When visiting a new city which I have never been to before, getting the right directions sometimes is a bit challenging, although there are many helping tools nowadays tholepin you guide through the unknown. l presume that you might have the same problem, so let’s learn to ask directions like a Thai, shall we?

A PLEASANT SALUTATION

For my first time travelling by myself, half way across the world, I must say I was pretty terrified. I made the long journey, flying 19 hours from Toronto, Canada all the way to Krabi, Thailand.

It was a huge accomplishment for me to achieve this goal by myself.

Confident as I was in all the airports, a feeling of panic struck me as I saw Nam from Projects Abroad holding the sign. When she saw me, a beautiful smile shone on her face, and eased my nerves. We made the usual small talk as she took me to the bus that would transport me to the Utopia residence - mine and future residents home for the next month.

On the way, we stopped at a grocery store and picked up Monti, another staff member from Projects Abroad who was waiting with an exceptionally large cart of groceries. This was unusual for me to see, groceries just piled into a shopping cart. They began loading the items into the back of the bus one by one; I was so used to cloth bags to transport groceries.

Feeling a little unsure about the situation, a friendly voice began to speak. Monti explained the situation to me, and continued to chat with me about my long journey, and where I would be staying.

When we arrived at The Utopia Residence, we all began to unload the groceries into the kitchen. The Utopia base camp was gorgeous and peaceful. All the volunteers were out for the weekend, so I had the remainder of the

Sunday to enjoy the tranquility of my first taste of Thailand.

The following day, I got to meet some volunteers and it did not take long before I realized how friendly everybody was. I got a tour of the camp and a ride into Ao Nang which I was shown how to use the bus system, riding a Tuk Tuk and where the closest 7-Eleven was. As the day progressed, I began to understand the casualness of my current environment, I felt relaxed.

On a side note, the “No Seatbelt Rule” really accorded with me. Back in Canada seat belts are a MUST and I never liked wearing them. I know I would enjoy this month of not having to have the responsibility of wearing a seatbelt.

The culture is so different from where I come from. The warmth of the people and the magnificent hospitality was much appreciated by myself, the shy Canadian girl. Thai people are genuinely amiable, and I was excited to immerse myself in their culture while volunteering with Projects Abroad.

Abroad to participate in their Diving and Marine Conservation Project.

This project aims to help conserve coral reefs, mangrove forests and coastal areas, through

research, community work, education and awareness.

Volunteers travel from around the world to help

conservation efforts through this project, and assist in making a difference though

reforestation work, beach clean-ups, cleaning up

reefs and research dives.

UP and UP into the

cloudsSoaring above Ao Nang stands a mountain with an incredibly long ridge-line,

which one can hike until you come to the edge which is literally a straight drop-off, 500 meters to the forest floor below.

Looking for a great place for photography? Step no further then the amazing Naga Mountain. The locals have adopted the name “Naga” due to the mountains resemblance to a dragons back as naga means dragon in Thai.The trail is also littered with large stones or “dragon scales” further adding to the naming of the mountain.

To get to this intense peak:

Take the main road to Klong Muang, travel past the major resorts in the area (such as the Sheraton, Sofitel and Amari ) and follow the main road - continuing until it stops at a dead end. This is the trailhead where there is parking and a small ranger station to greet you. In the Ranger Station is a shop where you can purchase simple snacks and drinks to keep you strong and able to climb.

Once you start walking towards the trail, you will see a plaque giving some explanation about the mountain. It is a 3.7km hike to the top and there are a few vistapoints along the way. For the most part, along the way, you will enjoy a thick jungle full of life and things to explore.

A stream guides your way at the beginning of the trail, sounding out a gurgle of flowing water to soothe your steps.

The forest in the area is untouched by development and is full of wildlife, a difference from the more predictable beach activities

that many of us are accustomed to. Stop mid-stride and take in the sounds of the cicadas, hornbills, songbirds and the occasional scurry of a small mammal, this is the nature of Krabi. From the top you can see the greater Ao Nang area, from Ao Nang beach to Krabi town, and on a clear day you can even see Koh Phi Phi. It’s breathtaking to have a view of the world from this height. There is a ledge at this point where you can sit and dangle your feet straight out over 500 meters above the forest floor. Sit and kick your legs out, you are carefree, on top of the world! Trust us when we tell you this hike is well worth any sweat you spend. Just make sure your camera has batteries.

Once our stomachs began to yearn for the fanatic dinner we’ve heard so much about, we ventured to The Cliff restaurant where a fantastic Monday Buffet dinner await-ed us. After dinner, another tradition of Thailand dazzled us, Thai dance. A group of elegantly adorned dancers entered the center of our restaurant and took the spot-light of the restaurant. The dancers went through a traditional Thai dance routine during which our host explained about the various poses and their related meaning.

Finishing off the our experience at The Crown Lanta Resort & Spa with a fantastic massage from one of the trained masseus-es, a traditional Thai massage loosened us up, got us ready for the new day on our trip and back to our regular lives.

We honestly felt amazingly rested and ready to start the day after sleeping at Crown Lanta, we are looking forward to our next reunion with such a great resort.

Geography brought electricity to Koh Jum late in 2009 as the island was in the direct path of the new underwater electric cable connecting Koh Phi Phi to the mainland. So now that Koh Jum is plugged-in, has it lost its reputable unplugged character that has attracted intrepid travelers over the past could of decades?

We are pleased to report that Koh Jum is still as tranquil and laid back as it always has been. In fact, what is most noticeable are the lack of noisy generators at most of the islands resorts. Folks come to Koh Jum to tune out; the island’s nature and culture dominate the minimal tourist infrastructure.

The existing resorts on Koh Jum all have their own family run character, ranging from the back packers paradise to luxurious beach villas.

Koh Pu Mountain is the dominant geological feature on the island at over 400 meters. It’s a great hike for the adventurous and a vital refuge of native habitat still harboring Asian Pied Hornbills and Burmese pythons.

The three villages; Koh Pu, Ting Rai and Koh Jum are situated on the back side of the island, amongst the mangroves while the resorts are located opposite, facing the open Andaman Sea. This division allows the villagers to remain authentic without and significant tourist infrastructure while the resorts are all located on the beaches.

UNPLUG IN KOH JUMKoh Jum Island is still the quintessential destination in Krabi province if you are looking for authentic Thai village life and development that is still a small footprint.

Koh Jum is predominately a large Muslim populated sub-district of Krabi, home to over 1,500 inhabitants. The locals of these villages engage mostly in fishing, rubber cultivation and the local crafts of cloth weaving and painting or ‘batik’ as it is referred to as here. While the north is mountainous, the south is comprised of dense jungle, cashew nut trees, rubber plantations, casuarinas and nipa-palms.

Since all the resorts face West, there are epic sunsets to be had all along the island. We recommend heading

to the south cape for an stunning sunset view. The ever-popular Koh Jum Lodge is a great choice when planning where to spend your time on the idyllic island.

Now, the pier is a bit misleading. We waited at the end of the pier before realizing the longtail taxis were passing us by and docking at the mainland. We then went back and followed our noses along past the shops until we saw a slipway with goods and people being unloaded. It was the second slipway we needed to get to “Moo Too”, the place on Koh Jum we were being collected from.

If you know the name of the pier on Koh Jum you need to get to, just ask anyone in this area and they will direct you to the correct boat.

We got on and soon were chugging along through the mangroves with a boat full of happy local Muslim women that looked as they hadn’t changed a bit since 1925. We arrived at Koh Jum just 45 minutes later, paid our 70thb Fare and were taken by “taxi” (a battered old pickup truck) through the winding dirt track until we reached our destination resort.

Give it a go and you will see a different side of Thailand from years gone by.

Well worth the experience.

Access to the island is by long tail taxi is now a songthaew you can take direct from Krabi Town to Laem Kruat. During the high season most visitors come to Koh Jum using the Krabi-Koh Lanta ferry which stops at two locations on Koh Jum, both of which are offshore so local long tail boats will come from the island to pick up passengers.

The lack of any deep ports on the island keep the ferry boats out at sea and almost prevent large masses of tourists from overcrowding the island. Getting here is an adventure and this ends up defining the interesting community of resorts and visitors that have made this island their home and the place they return to year after year.

Getting to Koh Jum can be very simple or a bit of a nightmare, it all depends on how much you know about getting to Koh Jum. This is where Krabi magazine can help, we recently we took the trip to Koh Jum ourselves and have decided to share the adventure with all of our readers. Hopefully this will relieve you of some mishaps, hassles and maybe some premature balding.

There are 2 ways to get to Koh Jum- by passing ferry or long tail boat. There are ferries that leave from Koh Lanta at 8am and from Krabi at 11am, both ferries stop

as they pass alongside Koh Jum and signal to longtail boats to come and pick up visitors to land ashore Koh Jum.

Koh Phi Phi also has ferries which leave at 2pm and operate on the same principle as above.

The second way to get to Koh Jum is to go to the port town of Laem Kruat from there you can catch a longtail boat directly to Koh Jum- this was our favorite of the 2 methods of travel.

If you are driving, it takes about 1 hour to get from Ao Nang to Laem Kruat. You just head to Tesco Lotus and then

continue until you see the large overhead signs which tell you to turn right for “Koh Jam”. This road will lead to the small locality of Laem Kruat, where you will find a large pier with boats going to Koh Jum.

If you don’t have transport of your own, you can always catch a blue and yellow “songthaew” - the local buses in a trucks body that have benches in the back. On the side of the “songthaew” will be written - Krabi,Bus Station, Tesco, Big C, Laem Kruat, they are frequent and easy to spot. A truly culinar y experience sums it up.This month, Krabi Magazine gets up-close and personal with one of the finest chefs in town.

Frederic Moline has been preparing 5 star dishes for the past decade. He has taken the time to talk with us and tell us a little about his history, inspirations, creations and experience being a chef and now living in Krabi.

KM: “Okay, so lets get a little background on you, Frederic, where are you from?”

Frederic Moline: “Please just call me Freddy, all my friends do. I was born in a town in Southern France called Montpellier.”

KM: “Great place Montpellier is, I’ve never been, but I’ve heard from numerous friends who’ve travelled there that it’s a beautiful place.”

Freddy: “It is a wonderful place, close to The Mediterranean Sea and full of ancient architecture there is something to see and do everywhere there.”

KM: “So back to you, what got you into cooking in the first place?”

Freddy: “Well, to be honest, the culinary arts are in my family’s blood. Both my Father and Grandfather were accomplished chefs, so I suppose I was just next in line to carry on the family tradition. I was surrounded with exquisite dishes and introduced to a range of ingredients and recipes from a very young age, so it was only natural for me to decide on this line of work.I also used to wake up extremely early every day when I was a child and go to the bakery to watch and learn from the bakers there.”

KM: “So when did you start cooking on your own?”

Freddy: “I began seriously cooking when I was 7 years old. Actually I loved it all so much at this point that by the time I was 13, I told my father that I wanted to drop out of school and become a professional chef ! Of course, he knew this was a crazy idea and forced me to continue my education, which I hated him for at the time but love and thank him for now!”

KM: “Did you go to culinary school after your regular schooling?”

Freddy: “Yes, I went to study the culinary arts in France where I learned traditional and classical cuisine. After these two areas of study I then went on to specialize in chocolate making, baking and ice cream making”

KM: “So after all this education what did you do next?”

Freddy: “I actually started working at a range of Michelin starred restaurants, increasing my knowledge and experience. At that time, my uncle was working for a cruise liner and I soon decided to do the same. So I started working for Disney cruise lines which saw me travelling all over the world, slowly working my way up the job ladder until I was eventually promoted to executive chef where I was responsible for up to 12,000 meals a day!

After 10 years I got tired and decided to start working on land, which took me to Russia, India and eventually to Krabi at The Sheraton Beach Resort and Spa.”

KM: “So after all this cooking, what is your favorite dish to cook and why?”

Freddy: “After spending so much time aboard ships and now in tropical regions of the world I have become to love cooking seafood as it requires more attention to detail and softer flavors. I truly love one of my signature dishes, seared snapper over steamed asparagus and drizzled with a white wine reduction sauce.”

KM: “Sounds great! So now you have your own place?”

Freddy: “Having my own business is great! I have always wanted to have my own restaurant, so this is really a dream come true for me. I have the freedom to choose my own menu, design the restaurant and decide on which services I want to focus on. It’s just great!”

KM: “Yes your menu looks quite diverse, I like the range of western and Thai options you have here.”

Freddy: “Yes I like to have a range of options available for people, from sandwiches and curries to the deli where patrons can come and take away 100 grams of Brie cheese or prosciutto, or even bottles of imported olive oil. I also offer catering options for people in private villas or homes. I just like having variety in my shop.”

KM: “Ok well you’ve got some dishes to prepare so we’ll let you go, but thank you for taking the time to talk with us.”

Pickles conjure up a range of memories for everyone. From a picnic on the side of stream or pond, a BBQ at a friends

place. We all have those memories with pickles, now we’re going to show you how to make some of your own.

Ingredients:4 kgs cucumbers

(cut into spears if too large for the jars) 1 kg green tomatoes (optional)

1 liter white vinegar3 liters water

100 grams salt16 cloves garlic, peeled and halved

fresh dill

Steps:1.Wash cucumbers (and tomatoes) and place in sink with cold water,

lots of ice cubes and let soak for 4-6 hours, if ice melts add more, always maintain a cold temperature.

2. In a large pot combine vinegar, water and salt and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce heat to a simmer and maintain simmer for 10-15

minutes.

3. Wash your canning jars and lids throughly in hot soapy liquid for at least 10 minutes, remove and let drip dry.

4.In each canning jar place 2 half cloves of garlic, a small amount of fresh dill tomatoes (if using) and enough cucumbers to fill each jar,

leaving 1cm of space at the top of jar.

5. Fill each jar to the top with the vinegar, water and salt mixture and screw the tops on each jar.

6. Place each jar in a pot full of water on the stove, bring water to a boil then reduce to a simmer and maintain simmer for 15 minute.

7. Remove from heat and let jars cool overnight.

8. Store finished jars in a cool dark place

If all steps have been properly followed, then the pickles are good for 2 years, but best if eaten within 1 year.
