Never in the clubs 22 year history was there a prouder moment than when Captain Leo Mulville was presented with the inaugural Cyder Cup from the captain of the Recently Put Together Kiely’s Golf Society, Mr Eamon Fahy.

The gauntlet was thrown, back in April of this year, the challenge was accepted and the victory was ever so sweet. With carefully selected pairings from declared members, the Pitch & Putt club proved to be more than a match for the over rated and aspiring Golfers from the Recently Put Together Kiely’s Golf Society.

KPP Club show true independence with a

convincing 5-2 Cyder Cup victory over rivals

Even the testing conditions of the day, with gale force winds mixed with glaring sunshine, could not detract from the sheer brilliance and class of the KPP Club that separated these two teams. All in all, there was great banter and friendly rivalry in the build up to showdown on 4

th July.

But when it came to the competition start, it was the KPP club who showed that this competition was more than just about words, and gave the golf society an independence day lesson they’ll not forget in a hurry.

First up was KPP pairing of “Shock and Awe”, Gary Marshall and Pops Mulville, pitted against the golf society bankers of Mick Whelan and Pat Crimin. field of play, and only 4 cars now left in the car park. Final pairing the KPP “Rear Guard” of Seanie Brennan and Paddy O’Hare against RTP KGS of Paul “Bomber” Byrne and No Show John Gallagher. If the RPT KGS thought they had problems, they had now. With No Show John Gallagher understandably hiding in Donnybrook, it was left to Bomber Byrne to fight it out on his own against the might of KPP rear guard. Seanie & Paddy playing as a cohesive unit fending off any comeback by the RPT GS Lone Star. Not knowing the results up ahead the “Rear Guard” plugged away until the game was put beyond retrieve, winning out with 3 up two to go. Final result of the first Cyder Cup 5-2 to the Kiely’s Pitch And Putt Club. The wind had now calmed down and the sun glistened at the 19

th.

But here is where the tide turned. Fourth up, resulting from a misfired tactic from the RPT’s, were the KPP “Heavy Hitters”, Liam Brennan & Maurice Mulville. The RPT’s tried to unsettle this pairing by pushing this game from 2

nd to 4

th

tee-off and complaining about a no show. The truth being told, the original RTP GS pairing for this game of Fergus Byrne and Pat Walsh knew the game was up when they were drawn against the “Heavy Hitters” and saved themselves an embarrassment. All credit to the Captain and named sub of the RPT’s Eamon Fahy for stepping up to the T-Box in an attempt to save face, but in fairness what else should a Captain do when he knows the ship is about to hit an Ice-berg and sink. This game was a formality as the “Heavy Hitters” doused the egg on the RPT’s. Nine up with eight to play. Two each for the KPP and RPT KGS. Worry for the President but not for the KPP. 5

th Game up saw the

KPP “Dynamic Duo” of Willie Deans and Scorth against RPT KGS, Mick Gartland and Ciaran Lacey. From the off, Willie showed that he was not just lucky in love, as he drove sweet tee-shots pitch perfect onto the greens. Scorth too followed in the footsteps of the fatherland demonstrating discipline and efficiency around the green. This game was over by the 13

th. And you

could sense the RPT KGS pairing were grateful for getting thus far.

Three to two for the KPP, and Pat was now getting anxious, reaching for the keys of his car to provide for an early exit and Captain Fahy already re-writing his speech. Only 2 games to go and it was the turn of the KPP “A-Team” Philip Brennan and Super Sub Declan Harper (in place for the injured Captain Leo), to battle it out against the in-form RTP KGS pair of Thos Brennan and Pat Butler. But Philip was to prove that form is temporary when pitted against class. Philip backed up by Declan showed true professionalism in the golfing fraternity, not allowing the opposition to get carried away and pouncing at their every weakness. The “A” in this team stood for Ace and the KPP club used this Ace effectively to demolish the opposition. This game was over for the RPT pair by the 15

th

and well and truly over for the RPT KGS as they were now down 4-2 with only one game left on the

At the presentation gathering in Kiely’s, the bragging rights were being rightly exercised by the victorious KPP Club. Cyder Cup committee members Seanie Brennan and Robin Leary went through the usual formalities and thank you’s, before it was left to the RPT KGS Captain Eamon Fahy to announce acceptance of defeat.

The ever so gracious RPT Captain offered sincere congratulations to his opposite number Leo and the KPP Cyder Cup team, but could not offer any excuses for the way in which they were outclassed on the field of play. Accepting the 1

st inaugural Cyder

Cup, Leo spoke of great pride amongst the club, thanked the Sponsor of the Cup, Pat Crimin and Kiely’s, before inviting the entire KPP Cyder Cup up to the platform, to be greeted with the chorus of “We are the Champions” blasting out in the background. Kiely’s pub had not witnessed celebrations of this magnitude since Italia’90. The victory was sweet, celebrations justified – it doesn’t get any better than this. Well done everybody.

The Race night is planned for Thursday 9th September in Kielys, with the first race due to start at 8:30pm. This is a fantastic night out and helps us to raise badly needed funds for the club. Once again Live and Exclusive will be hosting the event so you can expect the usual banter and craic. Unfortunately we are forced once again to turn to the members and friends to help out and sponsor races and buy horses, but

without fundraisers such as this, we cannot subsidise the running of the club. Indeed these are hard times but its all the more reason to have fundraisers such as the race night so that we can keep the costs of running the outings to a more manageable amount for our members during these times. Also the race night in itself provides for another chance for members to meet up and have a good night out with the chance of winning a few bob. The hardworking

committee have once again being tasked with selling horses for €20 each, with 1 in 8 chance of winning. If your horse wins you win €80. There are only 64 horses available. They need your help so, please approach any committee member and help them out by becoming a horse owner or syndicate for the race night and also come along and support the event. Race sponsors are also required, so if you know of anyone that would like to get

involved, let us know.

course, private coach transport and 3 course Dinner, not to mention the prizes on offer. Given the success of captains outings over the last number of years, not to mention Leo’s popularity, it is anticipated that this outing will be in great demand. We have only a limited number of rooms in the inn, so bookings will be taken on first come first serve basis. To book a place on

the outing, you must notify the Secretary

yourself, directly. Don’t assume anything other. A deposit of €20 will secure your spot on the outing. Visitors are once again more than welcome but should be nominated by existing club member. Secretary will issue txt shortly informing you of the total cost of trip.

It is with great sadness at the time of going to print that we learn of the passing of Ethne Nutley, beloved wife of fellow member Vincent.

Vincent was treasurer of the club for many years, and Ethne was always there to give him a helping hand and gave tremendous support to himself and the club during his terms in office. On behalf of the Kielys Pitch & Putt Club, the committee wishes to extend its deepest sympathies to Vincent and his family…. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis

Presidents Day

A good turnout for the Mikie Rooney Cup this year with 19 Members and 3 Visitors. However the more experienced golfers were more adept at handling the Glen Mill course and wet conditions of the day with Philip Brennan winning the trophy and picking up the first Major of the year. The conditions of the

least, but thankfully conditions were perfect on the day. It was once again Philip Brennan who lifted the trophy. Accepting the cup, Phillip spoke of delight of winning the Presidents prize once again following a gap of 28 years. Can anyone stop this machine completing the grand slam, (something that has never been achieved before). Hint hint handicap committee..

Anyway there is no doubt that Moate will be back on the cards in the very near future, as once again we were made feel very welcome and all had a good time. It was also a good opportunity to formally welcome the Brookvale branch (minus Jimmy the pillow) of the club on board, despite being down a tenner before we’d passed Palmerstown. Finally …

Since last newsletter the handicaps were reviewed as promised. Another review is penciled for later in the season Attendances on Sunday are still quite good, despite summer holiday period, so keep it up lads.
