Kororoit Creek Primary School has a zero tolerance for any form of child abuse 13 March 2020 KCPS Community gatherings As you would have read from my Compass posts today, as an extra precaution in light of COVID19 I have made the decision to cancel all events that will involve our wider community gathering in the same space. This includes cancelling the remaining Celebrations of Learning that we scheduled to take place across the school, the Swimming showcase next week and all Assemblies for the remainder of the term. I have not made this decision lightly as I know how hard our students and teachers have worked to put together their learning to share and celebrate with you. I understand that there will be some disappointed students and families however the health and safety of our children is paramount. I will work with my team to ensure that the Green team captains are recognised and receive their badges and will communicate with parents as needed. Please be assured that this is purely an extra safety precaution and that I continue to follow the advice from the Department of Education. I will continue to communicate any relevant changes with our community as they come through. Thank-you for your understanding. Swimming lessons will continue for our students as usual next week. Please see below the communication from Kingswim: At Kingswim, we are dedicated to the safety and wellbeing of our customers and staff. That’s why we are currently working closely with local schools and businesses to monitor the current COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak. At this point in time, there have been no confirmed cases at any of our Kingswim centres, including Caroline Springs. However, we are ensuring our staff have the support they need to provide a safe environment for the community and are prepared to react accordingly to any confirmed or suspected cases. At our centres, we are continuing to abide by all safe pool operating guidelines including regular pool testing, monitored chlorination and filtering. We are also meticulously and frequently cleaning the centre, as well as recommending swimmers take a pre-swim shower to ensure cleanliness upon entering the pool. Again, we take the health and safety of our customers and staff very seriously and appreciate your understanding during this challenging time. If you have any concerns, please feel free to get in contact with our staff on (03) 9307 2209, email us [email protected] or visit the Department of Health and Human Services website at dhhs.vic.gov.au/coronavirus Cybersafety I have recently been made aware of incidents that are occurring at home with students using digital technologies on personal devices. Please ensure that you are closely monitoring the websites and apps that your children are having access to. We strongly encourage parents to abide by the recommended age guidelines when allowing their children to use these apps. Apps such as ‘Snapchat’ have an age restriction for students 13 years and over. I have included a link to the ‘Think you know’ website and parent factsheet which provides families with information in regards to keeping your children safe online. We will be running ‘Think you know’ parent sessions throughout the year also so please come along when those dates are announced. Road safety around the school Please be mindful when crossing the road around the school. It is important that we are modelling appropriate behaviours for our children and using the school crossing appropriately. School Review As I mentioned in the previous newsletter, next term we will be having our school review. Part of this rigorous process involves talking to our community and gaining feedback on different areas such as student learning and community involvement. In the coming weeks we will be sending out a survey to all of our families. It would be greatly appreciated if you could take the time to complete the survey as your feedback is very important to us and the cycle of continued improvement. 3:15 finish Please be mindful that school finishes at 3:15pm each day and it is important that students are collected by 3:30pm. I recognise this can be difficult for parents however it is important that you make appropriate arrangements. The yard is supervised until 3:30 each day. Insurance Please note that Kororoit Creek Primary School does not have a whole school policy covering parents/guardians who do not have student accident insurance. Parents and guardians are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including the cost of an ambulance and any other transport costs. If they wish, parents/guardians can purchase insurance policies form commercial insurers for this purpose. We do encourage our families to obtain ambulance cover to avoid any unexpected costs. In the unfortunate event of an emergency, our duty of care to the children and community will be always be paramount. Class Captains Congratulations to all of our class captains, what a wonderful achievement! I look forward to working closely with them as a part of our Student Empowerment Group throughout the year.

I would like to say a big thank-you to our community for your understanding and support over the past few days. This has been unchartered territory for everyone involved and I have been making decisions based on the advice given in the most timely way possible. I would again like to reassure our community that all measures we have put in place are purely precautionary. School will be open as normal next week and if anything changes I will let our community know as soon as possible.

Thank-you again for your understanding and I wish you all a happy and safe weekend.

ART In art students have been inquiring into different ways to make paint.

They have been investigating how paint used to be made in the past and the differences

between how it is made today. Students then explored their surrounding environments to

gather and test natural materials such as leaves, bark, flowers and dirt in order to

create different colours and textures. Students discussed and reflected on what they

had learnt and discovered during their experimenting with natural materials in order to

make decisions on which materials worked best and which did not.

FRENCH In French, the grade 3 students have been working

on different recipes. They have been learning some ingredients in French and used

them while writing recipes. The students played memory games and demonstrated

their knowledge of French vocabulary. Additionally, they noticed a lot of

similarities in the way some ingredients are written in English and in French (La

mangue- mango, la tomate- tomato). The year 3 students also participated in the

lessons through connecting actions and learnt verbs (mix- mélangez). Furthermore,

some students were also able to use conjunctions (and-et, then-puis) and include

their prior knowledge of numbers. They have produced great recipes so far.

MUSIC The Grade five students have been inquiring into the

Central Idea ‘Music can be recorded in a variety of ways’. Within this

investigation students have explored the different ways that musicians can

write music to express a particular message. Students have worked to compose

music in response to particular stimulus such as photos, news articles and

graphic notations. After watching the piece ‘Artikulation’ by Ligeri students

annotated their own graphic notation and used garageband to create their own

piece. within their guitar playing grade fives have been exploring different

strumming patterns (including some tricky rhythms in 6/8 time) and

incorporating these within known songs to add interest to their playing. ^above an example of a graphic musical score

PE In physical education, senior students have been learning the correct technique for individual

athletic events in the lead up to the athletics carnival. In addition to this, students have been working on

their ability to ask for and apply feedback to improve the efficiency of their technique. Junior students

have been inquiring into the skill of running, learning the importance of correct technique and spatial

awareness when working in a relay team. These students will now begin working on other locomotor skills

such as hopping and jumping whilst participating in team building activities.

Green Team News

Green Team Captains Green Team Captains will be announced and presented with their badge in the

coming weeks!

Nude Food Day will be held EVERY Wednesday @ KCPS. Teachers and students will collect data on the number of student participants and the classes with the most

participation throughout the term will be recognised! Did you know?

• Schools produce approximately 45kg of rubbish per student annually. • This means that at KCPS, we produce approximately 50,000kg of waste EVERY

YEAR.

NUDE FOOD day is a chance for our students to realise what they can do for their health and the health of the planet. An event like this can give us all at KCPS a taste of

the benefits, ease and fun involved in packing a healthy, wrapper free lunch. For additional information, please visit our school website under the Sustainability

Project tab :)

Rubbish in the yard

Students have been reminded to please ensure they are throwing out rubbish into the appropriate bins when out in the yard and in the

classroom. This will help make sure our school continues to be a clean and environmentally friendly community.
