It is my endeavor in this paper to explore the emergence of"popular consciousness" among peasant women focusing on the

1929 women's revolt. The paper explains how they drew upon

cultural traditions and norms for framing their protest rather

than the development of formal ideologies. The central argument.

is that movement leaders drew from a strong moral imperative ottheir society a feminine and ethical one . to frame their r e s i s ~tance. Their consciousness was permeated by t r a d i t i o n a l . n o t i ~ ~ sof their position in rural life and the moral claim to certall1 pnvlleges that derived from their femininity and roles as subsistence

producers and providers.

11m , organizing the 1929 protest required considerable

oruanization and leadersl1ip. It was not enougl1 to Illobilize t1lOL1-s a ~ d s ofwomen to sit on warrant chiefs, disrupt the activities of

European firms and the colonial administration or block high

ways; sustaining the movement depended on well-organized and

coordinated articulation of the concerns of rural peasant won1en

and n1en. Unlike n1any social n1ovements) the won1en's revolt in

1929 cannot be described in tern1s of the careers, beliefs, ideolo

the idea of collective bel1avior ,as advanced by C.hicago sociologist Robert Park, and subsequently by Herbert Blumer, explains

~ o w responses to social change can occur outside formal institu

tions and well-institutionalized processes that are advanced in

the study of social movements.92 Just as a collective ideology was

the bedrock of local political and social process, so did women

rely on pre-existing orgaruzations that transformed in a unique

way for the mobilization of the women. The Morning Post of 26

August 1930 wrote: "The most interesting feature of the riot
