REAL VISION

FOR A NEW WORLD ENABLING A WORLD OF POSSIBILITES

Our vision of the IoT extends far beyond increased ma-

chine-to-machine (M2M) communication, and bringing

data to the cloud. It’s built on solutions which add intelli-

gence to the networks of sensors increasingly used for

gathering raw data from machines, objects and people;

aggregating and analysing data in real-time so that it

becomes meaningful and actionable; and transmitting it

securely to those who need it over virtual, cloud and

mobile infrastructures – instantaneously.

With this in mind we base our IoT hardware and soft-

ware product development strategy around the follow-

ing core principles:

DATABILITY

Engineering intelligent products capable of transforming

data into actionable information.

SECURITY

Embedding a multi-layered approach which protects data

and builds user trust.

MANAGEABILITY

Ensuring solutions are capable of scaling and delivering

guaranteed services, accessible from anywhere.

AGILITY

Providing built-in fl exibility which allows users to adapt

and respond quickly to changing business needs.

While the IoT promises a whole new world of possibilities

there are technological obstacles and challenges which

must be overcome, from interoperability, scalability,

mobility and power effi ciency considerations, to security

and certifi cation.

With more than two decades of embedded computing

experience, Kontron already has the knowledge and in-

dustry relationships necessary to ensure customers and

partners achieve successful IoT implementations and

tangible business benefi ts. Our innovative solutions ex-

pertise covers a broad spectrum of sectors and disciplines

including avionics, defence, energy, industrial automation,

healthcare, retail, telecom and transportation.

stop IoT embedded computing solutions provider, we are

forging ahead with the integration of software to com-

plement our extensive range of IoT-ready hardware pro-

ducts.

‘Out-of-the-box’ software and developer tools, including

BIOS and middleware, can be leveraged by our developer

community to rapidly build custom applications for de-

ployment in many emerging commercial and consumer

IoT markets. These include Transportation, Industrial

Automation and Communications.

KONTRON IoT IN ACTION

COLLABORATION AND PROOF OF CONCEPT

PRECISION FARMING

In farming, Kontron has joined forces with Universiti Sains

Malaysia (USM), Cisco, Dell, IBM and Intel to establish the

Collaborative Research in Engineering, Science & Tech-

nology (CREST) R&D organisation and an IoT development

laboratory. Based in Malaysia, CREST’s initial projects

have included Precision Farming where soil sensors

collect and report data from which a fertilisation map is

produced.

In one project identical greenhouses were used to grow

crops of peppers and tomatoes. In two of the greenhous-

es data sensors were used to measure ambient tempera-

ture and humidity and soil conductivity, EC and PH. The

data intelligence gathered from the sensors was collec-

ted and aggregated by Kontron Industrial Computer Plat-

form Gateways and transmitted via SYMCLOUD Micro-

server to remote based agricultural analysts who, using

a custom app on their smartphones, were able to analyse

and subsequently administer the optimum amount, fre-

quency and application of fertiliser required. Results in-

cluded a three times increase in crop yield in just one year

for the IoT enabled greenhouses compared to just one

harvest for those operating under normal conditions.

KONTRON IS AT THE FOREFRONT OF A PROGRESSIVE R&D ECOSYSTEM

FOR SPEEDING THE DEVELOPMENT OF WORLD-CLASS IoT SOLUTIONS AND

WITH THIS A KEY PARTICIPANT IN THE INTEL® IoT SOLUTIONS ALLIANCE.

MEDICAL AND HEALTHCARE

In the medical and healthcare sector Kontron and CREST’s

focus has been on the application of wearable embedded

systems, IoT connected devices technology and the com-

mercialisation of healthcare products, solutions and ser-

vices. As a result, more than 36 participating organisations

have already gained access to aff ordable and attainable,

patient-centric, quality healthcare in Malaysia by utilising

IoT technology.

Separately, Kontron has recently developed a Medical

Kiosk Proof of Concept application which saves time and

resources for medical professionals and health organisa-

tions while enhancing user/patient experience.

Five vital signs can be taken simultaneously in real-time

in under one minute and made accessible to doctors and

nurses on demand. Armed with this information they can

more accurately assess any potential or existing medical

issues prior to meeting patients in person. This may also

allow them extra time to make more accurate diagnoses

and prescribed treatments in advance of consultations.

Other potential benefi ts will include improved public well-

being and health awareness education. The Medical Kiosks

are being demonstrated at events and conferences around

the world and are increasingly recognised as a means of

improving quality of healthcare.

FIELD SERVICE MAINTENANCE

To help manufacturers minimise unplanned factory

downtime and the associated revenue loss, Kontron has

recently demonstrated how the Salesforce1 Cloud Plat-

form can be used to more effi ciently monitor factory

equipment.

This was undertaken at a textile manufacturing company

and allowed real-time machine failure alerts and error

messages to be sent to fi eld service engineering person-

nel using mobile phones, allowing them to be rapidly dis-

patched to the problem area with the right information.

The demonstration featured the use of Kontron IoT gate-

way devices based on Intel® technology that provide prov-

en, cutting-edge connectivity capabilities, and embedded

computers that deliver industry-leading computing per-

formance.

This usage model, which connects manufacturing equip-

ment to humans outside the factory, can also be applied

to a wide variety of other environments for solving a range

of problems or supporting new business models where

machine data is of critical value to key stakeholders.
