SSDHDS is an Orthodox Jewish,

dual-curricular school committed to providing Jewish children of all back-grounds with an outstanding Judaic and secular education in a warm and caring environment. We share with

other preparatory schools an emphasis on the importance of hard work and diligence in the pursuit of excellence.

Our mission is to partner with

parents to instill in our students strong Jewish values fundamental to personal growth and moral development, while

nurturing each child’s intellectual curiosity and creativity and fostering a

lifelong love of Jewish learning and living. We believe that engaging the

child in Torah study is integral to developing Jewish pride and

appreciation of the importance of Jewish law and observance to the

continuity of our people.

We strive to imbue our students with our guiding principles: the centrality of Torah in daily life, the significance of

Israel to the Jewish people, self-respect and respect of others, and a sense of

responsibility to contribute to the betterment of our world.

Parshat Vayetze

DRASHA:

Our father Yaakov leaves his home, he who is accustomed to study, tranquility, and to “dwelling in tents,” and immediately finds himself alone and endangered in a hostile world. A rock is his pillow and he must erect barriers at night to protect himself from wild animals (both four and two footed) as he sleeps on the ground. Though he is reassured by Heaven and by his grand dream and vision it is clear to him that his future is still uncertain and fraught with dangers, peril and challenges.

When he finally arrives close to his destination he encounters the neighbors and daughters of Lavan who are unable to water their flocks because of the great rock that seals the opening to the well of water. The Torah then describes for us in great detail how Yaakov greets the people and the family of Lavan and in a selfless gesture of help and compassion to others - who he has just met - singlehandedly removes the rock from the mouth of the well.

It is interesting to note that the Torah lavishes a great deal of space and detail to this incident at the well while the Torah tells us nothing about the fourteen years of Yaakov’s life that passed between his leaving home and arriving at the house of Lavan.

Rashi, quoting Midrash, tells us that Yaakov spent these fourteen years in spiritual study and personal growth at the yeshiva academy of Shem and Ever. So, if this is in fact the case, why does the Torah not tell us of this great feat of spiritual challenge and self-improvement – fourteen years of

sleepless study - while it does seem to go into mystifying detail regarding the incident at the well of water? Certainly, it would seem that the years of study would have a greater impact on the life and persona of Yaakov than rolling a rock off of the mouth of a well would have had.

As we see throughout the book of Beresheet, and indeed regarding all of the Torah generally, the Torah places utmost emphasis on the behavior that one exhibits towards other human beings. Not everyone can study for fourteen years in a yeshiva day and night. Yet everyone has the ability to care about others, to demand justice for the defenseless and to provide to the best of one’s abilities help to those who so obviously need it.

Though Yaakov, like all of the great figures and founders of our people that appear here in Beresheet, is unique in spiritual stature and blessed with Divine visions and revelation, he is also an essential example to everyman. His actions are meant to be a template of attitude and behavior for his descendants and the people who bear his name.

The Torah, while making it clear that we can never personally be the equal of our ancestors in their exalted spiritual state and accomplishments, guides us and shows us how we can emulate their values and behavior. We can all help those in need to roll the rock off of their wells and thereby to nurture a community within which the Yaakov within all of us and our children can grow and expand.

Shabat shalom. Rabbi Berel Wein © 2013

OVERVIEW: Parshat VaYetze (Gen. 28:10 – 32:3) Fleeing from Esav, Jacob leaves Be'er Sheva and sets out for Charan, the home of his mother's family. After a 14 year stint in the Torah Academy of Shem and Ever, he resumes his journey and comes to Mount Moriah, the place where his father Yitzchak was brought as an offering, and the future site of the Beit Hamikdash. He sleeps there and dreams of angels going up and down a ladder between Heaven and earth. G-d promises him the Land of Israel, that he will found a great nation and that he will enjoy Divine protection. Jacob wakes and vows to build an altar there and tithe all that he will receive. Then he travels to Charan and meets his cousin Rachel at the well. He arranges with her father, Lavan, to work seven years for her hand in marriage, but Lavan fools Jacob, substituting Rachel's older sister, Leah. Jacob commits himself to work another seven years in order to also marry Rachel. Leah bears four sons: Reuven, Shimon, Levi and Yehuda, the first Tribes of Israel. Rachel is barren, and in an attempt to give Jacob children, she gives her handmaiden Bilhah to Jacob as a wife. Bilhah bears Dan and Naftali. Leah also gives Jacob her handmaiden Zilpah, who bears Gad and Asher. Leah then bears Yissachar, Zevulun, and a daughter, Dina. Hashem finally blesses Rachel with a son, Yosef. Jacob decides to leave Lavan, but Lavan, aware of the wealth Jacob has made for him, is reluctant to let him go, and concludes a contract of employment with him. Lavan tries to swindle Jacob, but Jacob becomes extremely wealthy. Six years later, Jacob, aware that Lavan has become dangerously resentful of his wealth, flees with his family. Lavan pursues them but is warned by Hashem not to harm them. Jacob and Lavan agree to a covenant and Lavan returns home. Jacob continues on is way to face his brother Esav. The Soille Scene This Week

In Social Studies, fourth graders have been “stepping into the shoes” of the early Californians. They've been learning what life was like for various tribes such as the Chumash, Mojave and the Yurok including how they used the natural resources found near them and what they traded with other tribes. The students were divided into groups and were able to extend their knowledge of other early Californians. Groups chose a Native American tribe, researched them and performed skits about them in front of class. Not only did they learn about different tribes, but they learned how to work together as a group. Each student had a different role, whether it was actor, director, prop master, or script writer and they put their heads together to create an interesting, fun and creative performance that helped their fellow classmates expand their knowledge of the early Californians.

Learning the Hebrew letter Gimel, along with different vocabulary words, the children learned the Hebrew word for ice cream which is Glida. To help enhance the experience of learning new vocabulary we have made hand made Vanilla ice cream. This project was generously sponsored and conducted by one of our amazing volunteer moms, Sarah Kesendorf (Hannah's mom). Thank you again for all the help. It was a treat in the full meaning of the word.

The first graders completed their study of H.A. Rey and

learned his wife, Margret, was the person who wrote the

Curious George stories and that H.A. Rey illustrated them.

Students came up with ideas for new book titles for Curi-

ous George and illustrated their covers. The intriguing ti-

tles include: Curious George and the Electric Scooter, Curi-

ous George Goes to all the Continents, Curious George

rides a Hangglider, and Curious George becomes a Ninja.

They are on display outside the first grade hallway.

The Soille Scene This Week

Cross-country ended on Monday after a great season in which our runners were constantly improving. This picture is from the third race at la Jolla Shores.

Every 6th grader has their own Microsoft Surface RT for use during school and it has been neat finding different ways to use the tablets in Math Class. This week, students in Pre-Algebra learned about factoring monomials. After discussing as a class the concept of prime factorization and greatest common factor with variables, students had two ways to practice the factoring. At first they worked together in groups with prime factors written on squares of colored paper and they created the factor trees on their desks. After completing the group activity, students worked on their tablets creating factor trees using a website online. Each student was able to receive instant feedback as to whether they had the process correct or not. Students were also able to work at their own pace and interact with the technology. With a diverse group of learners it is helpful to have many ways for them to apply and extend their knowledge. 5th grade students work on Chihuli glass projects in art

class. Harrison Wechsler is proud of his work!

Health Alert - Strep Strep infections are still appearing in the first, second and third grades. In addition an adenovirus that causes severe sore throats is also in the community. Scabies We have seen a few cases of scabies in the school. The students have already been treated. Symptoms include severe itching which is worse at night and often a rash in the folds of skin between fingers, around wrists and el-bows and armpits. It may occur other places on the body. Scabies is caused by a mite called Sarcoptes scabiei that crawls under the skin and causes severe itching. Incuba-tion is from 2 weeks to 2 months from exposure. Conta-gion lasts from the time scabies is acquired until after skin treatment with a prescription lotion.

5th graders also worked on paper cutting projects. Kayla

Wrotslavsky is showing her beautiful Blessing of a Home

Kristallnacht Plus 75 years

This weekend the world will note the 75th year since the infamous Kristallnacht (Night of Broken Glass) when a planned massive pogrom marked the beginning of the destruction of European Jewry. In speaking this week with a survivor, I was told that Kristallnacht was in one way beneficial: it was a wake - up call for those who were ignoring the threat Nazi rule posed. That night of horror – rampaging through the civilized cities of Germany and the burning of synagogues – made it’s denial impossible. Unfortunately, it came at a time when few were still able to escape.

Recently, the Pew Survey on American Jewry documented the fact that due to intermarriage and assimilation there will be fewer and fewer American Jews as time goes on. It is noteworthy that for most American families, there still has been no wake – up call. Many remain in denial.

Although it is known that Jewish children who attend Jewish day school have completely different outcomes. For example, 6+ years of Jewish day school education reduces the intermarriage rate by more than half. Enrolling your child in a Jewish day school is one of the most effective ways of creating a Jewish future for our families. Yet, in the U.S. only 12% of children attend Day School. This compares with 50% in Toronto, 90% in Mexico, and 85% in South Africa. Certainly if American Jewry would choose Jewish day school in comparable numbers, we could be sure that Jewish life here would become more vibrant, for the benefit of all Americans.

You are to be congratulated! Your children are in Hebrew Day School; you support the very education which not only builds strong Jewish identity, but which also graduates Jewish leaders. (Over 40% of communal leaders today are Day School graduates.) Sometimes, in the midst of carpooling, juggling schedules and helping with homework we lose sight of how greatly we are benefiting our children and rewriting the future history of our families.

You and I are taking the road less traveled by; and it has, and will continue, to make all the difference!

Soille 8th grade boys visit SCY High Soille 8th grade boys visited SCY High last Thursday afternoon. The afternoon began with a game of Human Bingo, when the Soille and SCY High students got to know a little bit about each other by asking each other questions about their lives. After a delicious lunch, SCY High students presented a number of lab demonstrations along with explanations of the underlying scientific principles. Liam Aron (SCY High Class of 2014) demonstrated sublimation using solid carbon dioxide which effectively produced a fog machine. Steven Wechsler (Soille Class of 2010, SCY High Class of 2014) explained atomic emission spectrum while burning ionic salts which burn different colors and can therefore be used to determine what stars are made of. Bryant Ainhorn (Soille Class of 2010, SCY High Class of 2014) demonstrated principles of decomposition reaction, in which one compound, in this case soap, decomposed into its individual elements. Afterwards, Soille and SCY High students studied Torah together

b'chavruta, in partners, learning about Tza'ar Ba'alei Chayim, the Torah's perspective on sensitivity to animals. The day ended off with fun sports activities. All in all, the program exposed Soille students to SCY High’s outstanding academics, stimulating and relevant Judaic studies and the special ruach, SCY High spirit! 7th and 8th grade parents are invited to an informational Open House at SCY High, Monday, November 18th @ 7:30 pm at SCY High.

The Run for the Hungry 5K and

10K is the perfect way to start your

Thanksgiving Day. A family oriented

event perfect for everyone of all age

groups and fitness levels. You can

choose to run or walk either a 5K

(3.1 miles) or a 10K (6.2 miles).

This great event offers fun

entertainment all along the route as

well as at the finish line, tasty

refreshments, and of course a

worthy cause -- helping San Diego's

hungry. Each registered participants

receives a colorful, top-quality

commemorative T-shirt. When you think of San Diego County’s hungry, you probably first think of those

living on the streets or in shelters, but did you ever consider that your neighbor may be hungry? Are you aware that

nearly 50% of those helped by the San Diego Food Bank must choose between paying for food or paying their rent/

mortgage? San Diego’s hungry are all around us. The vast majority are in households with an employed adult living in the home. Many are children and senior citizens living on fixed incomes below the poverty level.
