21st Century Teachers Gathering

On Thursday, we had an early 1 pm dismissal to enable our faculty to share important professional development experiences. We thank our parents for their understanding that investing in our teachers means investing in your children.

How was this program different from a 20th Century professional development day, you ask? For our K – 5 faculty, our teachers brainstormed the best way to use the changing channels of communication through which children learn today. SSDHDS is an Orthodox Jewish,

dual-curricular school committed to providing Jewish children of all back-grounds with an outstanding Judaic and secular education in a warm and caring environment. We share with

other preparatory schools an emphasis on the importance of hard work and diligence in the pursuit of excellence.

Our mission is to partner with

parents to instill in our students strong Jewish values fundamental to personal growth and moral development, while

nurturing each child’s intellectual curiosity and creativity and fostering a

lifelong love of Jewish learning and living. We believe that engaging the

child in Torah study is integral to developing Jewish pride and

appreciation of the importance of Jewish law and observance to the

continuity of our people.

We strive to imbue our students with our guiding principles: the centrality of Torah in daily life, the significance of

Israel to the Jewish people, self-respect and respect of others, and a sense of

responsibility to contribute to the betterment of our world.

Parshat Toldot

DRASHA: The Torah emphasizes to us the importance of the continuity of generations in this week’s parsha. The name “Toldot” – generations, testifies to the stress that the Torah places on this vision in Jewish life. My wise old Talmud teacher said to his class: “Boys, if your grandparents and your grandchildren are both proud of you and your achievements, then probably Heaven is also satisfied with you.”

Sixty years later I fully comprehend the import of his words. Midrash teaches us that Abraham died earlier than the destined amount of the years of his life so that he would not have to witness the betrayal of his life style and value system by his grandson Esau.

Jewish life prided itself on the continuity of generations. It was the cement that bound the small, persecuted people of Israel together in all of the lands of its dispersion. It also is its dissolution that heralds the breakup of the Jewish home and the wave of assimilation and intermarriage that has now engulfed much of Jewish society.

The weakening of individual commitment to family and generational continuity has contributed to this situation. Family generational continuity somehow is no longer the priority that it once was in many Jewish homes and communities.

Our matriarch Rebecca recognized that her eldest son Esau was a danger to the generational continuity which is the foundation upon which a Jewish nation was being built. Unfortunately, the survival of educational progress relies on

a system of triage. Not everyone can and should be entitled to attend graduate school or become a brain surgeon.

The same is true in the spiritual world. Not everyone is cut out to spend an entire day studying Talmud, as admirable and necessary as such an occupation is. Knowing our children as individuals and interacting with them in a way that best connects them to us, their parents, is an important skill for each of us to master.

Perhaps this is one of the causes of the low numbers in the Jewish population and the declining numbers of American Jews, as recently highlighted by the Pew Survey. The problem of generational continuity is a touchy, delicate and painful one, and it changes from place to place, time to time, and generation to generation.

That is why the Torah always portrays our future as an uncertain one – with barren mothers, fathers threatened by outside enemies who covet their wives and assets, and the difficulties of raising children in an unwholesome environment. And that is why “toldot” somehow remains the key to Jewish survival and success.

Shabat shalom. Rabbi Berel Wein © 2013

OVERVIEW: Parshat TOLDOT (Gen. 25:19 – 28:9) After twenty years of marriage without children, Yitzchak's prayers to Hashem are answered and Rebecca conceives twins, Esav and Yaakov. The pregnancy is extremely painful. Hashem reveals to Rebecca that the suffering is a microcosmic prelude to the world-wide conflict that will rage between the two great nations descended from these twins - Rome and Israel. Esav is born first, and then Yaakov, holding onto Esav's heel. As they grow up, the contrast between the twins becomes apparent: Esav is a hunter, a man of the field, of the physical world, whereas Yaakov sits in the tents of Torah developing his soul. On the day of the funeral of their grandfather Avraham, Yaakov is cooking lentil soup, the traditional mourner's meal. Esav rushes in, ravenous from a hard day's hunting, and sells his birthright (and its concomitant spiritual responsibilities) for a bowl of soup, clearly demonstrating his unworthiness for the position of the firstborn. Yitzchak tries to escape to Egypt when a famine strikes Canaan, but Hashem reminds him that because of the akeida (where he was offered up as a sacrifice) he has become holy and must remain in the Holy Land. Instead he relocates to Gerar in the land of the Plishtim, where, to protect Rebecca, he has to say that she is his sister. Yitzchak arouses jealousy when he becomes immensely wealthy, and Avimelech the king asks him to leave. Yitzchak re-digs three wells dug by his father, prophetically alluding to the three Temples which will be built in the future. Avimelech, seeing the blessings that Hashem has bestowed on Yitzchak, makes a treaty with him. Yitzchak, sensing the end of his days approaching, summons Esav to give Esav his blessings. Rebecca acts on a prophetic command that the blessings must go to Yaakov; she arranges for Yaakov to impersonate Esav and receive the blessings. When Esav in a rage of frustration complains to his father that his brother has bought his birthright, Yitzchak realizes that the birthright has been bestowed correctly on Yaakov who has valued its responsibilities rather than its privileges, and confirms the blessings he has given. Esav vows to kill his brother, and so Rebecca sends Yaakov to her brother Lavan where he may find a suitable wife. (C) 2013 Ohr Somayach International - All rights reserved.

to cutting edge science and engineering study now has broad application to every school world-wide. Mr. Mitra has researched how children learn best, and how children can be taught to organize their learning for themselves. This provoked much discussion and fired neurons in different directions for Soille, elementary educators. They excitedly discussed possibilities for their own classrooms to enhance the experience for our Hebrew Day students.

The middle school teachers also took part in 21st Century training. They met at the Microsoft Store for a tutorial on their Surface tablet computers. Each middle school teacher received a tablet, as have each 6th grade student. At the store, they attended class to learn how to properly use it to enhance our school curriculum and to more deeply engage each student. Once again, in every subject taught here, new ideas took root to be carried out in our classrooms during the coming days of school.

Soille is committed to providing an educational setting and experience that properly prepares each of our students to be productive 21st century citizens in every aspect of their lives, addressing their academic, social, and spiritual development.

Cracking the Mystery of a Story’s Structure

Fourth graders in both Mrs. Adam’s and Ms. Hart’s classes practiced their public speaking and organizational skills by writing and presenting their first book report of the year. Each child chose a mystery novel to read. In the report, they wrote about the setting, characters and clues of the plot. These important elements were also artistically represented on a poster. Students presented the mystery to the class without revealing the end. The poster also included a plot map to show they understood the structure and timeline of the story. Don’t be surprised if this fuels the interest of one of these fourth graders becomes the next Sandra Brown or James Patterson.

6th Graders Bubbling Over in Science

Our 6th graders are in the midst of studying solutions, com-posites, and surface elasticity, topics essential to engineer-ing, medicine, and product design. In addition to com-puter based units and Smartboard lessons, they are still getting their hands dirty by conducting real world experi-ments. Science teacher Matt Bessler had his class blowing soap bubbles and understanding the variables in size, shape, and durability. This gave our students the chance to take charge of their own learning.

Collaborative Role Playing

First grade Judaic class learned Hebrew language through fun performances which they worked on together. Learning a second language can be a challenging experience. Morah Stephie makes sure to allow fun, collaborative-driven activities lead the way for easy learning. The plays allowed children to build vocabulary, promote leadership and practice public speaking> They worked on projecting their voice, making eye contact and keeping the audience’s attention – all important qualities of a person who communicates with others in any language. Check out the pictures of this lively, enjoyable and collaborative activity!

At Home Over Shabbat

Our outstanding family program Project Jewish H.O.M.E. brought together 52 Hebrew Day families this past Shabbat at Beth Jacob Congregation for an incredible experience. From great meals hosted by parents on Friday night, the luncheon at Beth Jacob bringing everyone around one table for lunch, to stimulating lectures and fun filled workshops, the 25 hours together offered great inspiration. The culminating Havdalah, led by Rabbi Shalem in song and story sent every participant home happy, and looking forward to the next program. Many to thank: first and foremost, every participant for coming; Rabbi and Mrs. Bogopulsky and Beth Jacob for being gracious hosts; Yonina Kaplan, Dorit Silverman, and Meryn Ellis for coordinating. The theme: Living a Zestful Life, based on our Successful Me character program, energized every session, and left us all looking ahead to the next time we can get together as families and grow together.

School News

Alumni in the Spotlight Eli Landau attended Soille Hebrew Day School from 3rd Grade until he graduated 8th Grade in 1994. When asked who his favorite teacher or class was, he found it hard to choose since he had so many. He picked his mom, Jan Landau, even though she never taught him because he has heard a lot of good things about her. Eli says that his best memories are with the great friends he made at the school and many of them are still in contact with each other. Eli feels that Soille did a great job to prepare him for his life after graduation, both personally and academically. He always felt such a strong feeling of community and really missed that when he moved to Los Angeles. Academically, he says, his great teachers really helped prepare him to be successful in high school and college Eli attended Patrick Henry High School, along with a few other SSDHDS alumni and then he attended UCLA, where he graduated Cum Laude with a BS in Business Economics and a minor in Accounting. After graduating UCLA, Eli worked at Deloitte & Touche in Los Angeles as an Auditor and obtained his CPA license. He moved over to the private side of accounting and worked as a Controller for a private real estate company in Malibu for 6 years. Towards the end of that time, Eli met his even-tual wife, Reut Gal, who was also from San Diego but living and working in Los Angeles (They knew each other from San Diego, but got reac-quainted in Los Angeles through the magic of Facebook!). Eli and Reut decided to not only get married in San Diego, but move back to be closer to both their families and live in a city and community they love. Through an introduction from another SSDHDS Alumna, Charlene Seidle, Eli was able to get a job as Controller at the Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego, where he has been for the past 2.5 years. He loves working somewhere that stresses so many of the same values that he learned at Soille, including tzedakah, kavod, Torah and de-rech eretz. This summer, when Eli took his almost 2 year old daughter to the toddler room at Hebrew Day, Eli recalls how many memories of his time at the school came back to him. He says a lot has changed physically with the building, like a second floor! But so much was the same. Eli saw lots of familiar faces (like his sister, Naomi Shakhman, and her family!) and lots of happy kids running around. He says it was neat to see students that he was in school with, who were now taking their own kids to school. “There is a great sense of community, security and love inside those doors on Afton Road, and something that my wife and I are happy that our daughter gets to experience”. Eli’s futures plans include continuing to play a role in helping the Jewish community in San Diego thrive, both through his work at the Jewish Community Foundation and his involvement with SSDHDS. way for us to meet and greet members of our Jewish

by the table to say hello to Beth and the Hebrew Day

representing our wonderful school. As well, please make

sure to tell your friends about this fun family-friendly

our shared respect for Shabbat. Please also be under-

standing that teachers and staff will be less available than

usual once dismissal takes place.

Whole Brain Presentation Well Received

On Tuesday evening, 75 parents gathered here to listen to a stimulating lecture given by best-selling author and child psychologist Dr. Tina Bryson on ‘How to Parent the Whole Brain Child.’ Using humor, common sense, and the latest neuroscience, Dr. Bryson made the talk personal and filled it with cogent, every day examples of how to redirect your child, and in fact how to help ‘re-wire’ your child’s thinking patterns. We were able to bring Dr. Bryson to San Diego through our participation in ‘We Care’ – a consortium of independent San Diego schools. We highly recommend her book, “The Whole Brain Child” and invite you to continue the discussion this coming Tuesday evening, Nov. 5 at Coffee Bean Mission Valley, where Allison Gardenswartz will lead a PLC discussion. Even if you missed the lecture, plan to come on Tuesday evening.

Food Forms

We need a 100% participation in returning the

Child and Adult Care Food forms that were sent

home last week. Your participation will allow us to

defer the cost of food and snacks that are increasingly

getting more expensive, and the money saved will be

applied towards our enrichment classes Yoga and

Music which the children enjoy.

Thank you to the teachers who put on their painting gears on Thursday, at our Faculty In-Service day, to help revamp

and beautify our playground. They washed and repainted many of the structures and play surfaces making them look

like new again. Our old but beloved yellow slide has been converted into a beautiful mountain where the children can

climb up and slide down and hide underneath . Our barn has been transformed into an upscale neighborhood home!

With the children’s imagination the new painted fire truck will be taking off to put fires out and help people in

emergency. Come out and take a look at the transformation.

PUMPKIN PATCH A wheel barrow of “Pumpkins”

On Wednesday, “The Bubbles” went on a field trip to

the Pumpkin Patch in Bonita. The children enjoyed

feeding, touching and interacting with both goats and

turkeys inside the petting farm. We also explored and

talked about the colors and the different sizes of the

pumpkins. Each child picked their own pumpkin to

take home and enjoy.
