)0*2 Waste Minimi@ation versus Waste Control
Waste Minimi#ation is not the same as waste control Waste control means red!cing
waste after it has been created, rather than avoiding its creation in the first place
Traditionally solid wastes are managed in a hierarchy that loo"s li"e an inverted
pyramid =ig!re 1> (t the broad top is disposal, which is a macro sol!tion applied at
the level of the company Fery little of the waste is processed or treated in any way,
and indeed have a ma+im!m impact on the environment
(t the narrow bottom of the inverted pyramid is waste minimi#ation at so!rce This isa micro sol!tion to waste management, applied at the level of an individ!al and
ho!sehold, or a b!sinessEind!stry 0 at the place where the waste is act!ally generated
$ere a conscio!s effort is made to red!ce the amo!nt of waste generated 0 indeed to
avoid sit!ations where waste is generated The impacts and effects on the
environment at this level are minimal
*n some cases waste control is the only feasible option Whenever possible, waste
minimi#ation is emphasi#ed as a new approach to apply in the design and
implementation of a variety of pro6ects %o!rce red!ction is the strategy of first
choice, followed by recycling, treatment, and as a last and least preferred resort,
environmentally so!nd disposal
Waste minimi#ation is a methodology !sed to achieve waste red!ction, primarily
