2. Player ObjectivesYou assume the role of the guiding spirit in a Kingdom of your choice and your main goal is tobe a successful ruler. You are in charge of the virtual throne and it is your duty to decide thedestiny of your empire. You can form alliances, plan conquests, develop your lands or spy onothers: you decide where you want to focus your efforts.

2.1. Ultimate Emperor of EuropeTo win the game you have to become the Ultimate Emperor of Europe. This goal can beachieved in one of two ways:• Winning the election for Ultimate Emperor of Europe• Claiming the title of Ultimate Emperor of Europe

2.1.1 ElectionPeriodically the seven most important Kingdoms in Europe are ranked. The rulers of the firsttwo Kingdoms become candidates and the five others are the electors in the election of theUltimate Emperor of Europe. You can attend the election as an observer to see who is voting forwhom. If you are a candidate you can accept or turn down the nomination. As an elector youcan abstain from voting. There are two possible outcomes:• You win the election and become Ultimate Emperor of Europe. You can choose to reject

the result, which means the game continues, or you can accept the result and win the game.• You lose the election and another ruler is elected to that title. In this case you can accept

the results and lose the game, or you can decline them and begin a war against everyonewho voted for the elected ruler instead of you.

2.1.2 Claiming the Title of Ultimate Emperor of EuropeWhen you feel strong enough to win the election, you need not wait: you can always claim thetitle of Ultimate Emperor of Europe at any time via the Royal Dynasty window . You can thenmanually initiate the election and see if the other Kingdoms elect you. After you have claimedthe title, if you are not successful, you have to wait a while before you can claim again.

2.2. LosingYou lose the game when you have lost your last Province or when you have accepted the electionof another ruler to the role of Ultimate Emperor of Europe. You will then be directed to theStatistics Screen, where you can see your overall performance.

2.3. Total Victory or Minor VictoryIf you manage to conquer all Provinces in Europe you automatically become Ultimate Emperorof Europe. You can also win the game by achieving all 10 Kingdom Advantages, which is calleda Minor Victory.

2.4. RetireAt any time during the game you can decide to leave the game by retiring. If you retire you willbe also directed to the Statistics Screen.

Introduction

1. Game SynopsisWelcome to Knights of Honor: the first Empire Conquering Simulation. The game’s mix of real-time strategy and immersive battle situations offers something foreveryone within an absorbing simulation environment. In Knights of Honor your goal is simple – become the Emperor of all Europe by means fair orfoul. Keep in mind that you are not playing in a static environment: the rest of Europe is vyingfor the same, so you will be inundated with request or threats from fellow rulers, as well asnumerous offers of agreements and perhaps even special missions. As monarch of your ownKingdom, you must think on your feet, for the decision as to how you conquer Europe is at lastthrust into your own hands.Your Knights are the most important element of the game and with them you will fight wars, manage Provinces and secure trade agreements with the other rulers. Fight, trade, make peaceand form alliances to achieve your goal while developing a successful Kingdom using theKnights in a variety of roles, while other rulers are doing exactly the same. Just remember: yourKnights are a finite resource, for you can choose just nine of these powerful, brave and bold men.You will play in one of three major time periods during an age rife with conquest and confrontation.Early Medieval about 1000 ADHigh Medieval about 1200 ADLate Medieval about 1350 ADEach period represents a milestone in the Medieval ages and comes with its own trials andtribulations. In addition, the Kingdom you choose affects the difficulty and challenge of thegame. For example, choose England and you will get a large Kingdom with many resourcescompared to a small Province such as Aragon. Your economic and social conditions, Provincesize and how the rest of the world reacts towards you will be totally different.

They canperform several different espionage actions, depending on the profession the otherKing gives them. But beware – you might also have hired a Spy as one of your

Knights. A Spy can be captured and imprisoned: this is represented by bars falling over hisportrait. A Spy not assigned a mission automatically protects your Royal Court. For moreinformation, see Espionage on p. 38.

4. MerchantMerchants are your trade representatives and allow you to actively trade with otherKingdoms. They can raise additional gold income for you or import Trade Goods.Highly experienced Merchants raise more gold for you. To assign a Merchant to atrade route you need to have signed Trade Agreements with other Kingdoms. When

governing a Province they increase your gold income.

(provided that the King is married). They will be babies at first but will soon grow up to bevaluable assets and enrich your Kingdom.

1.1. KingThe King is the central figure of your Royal Family and is the ruler of your Kingdom. InKnights of Honor there are many different titles for his position, such as Sultan, Emperor or Tzar, depending on the culture and religion of the country you choose to begin to play with.Should your King die, whether from being killed on the battlefield or from old age, a new Kingwill be appointed (see section 1.2. Succession and Heirs below for more information). You can have your King perform any Knightly profession and, if appointed to such a role, theKing has additional bonuses when performing his duties. For example, if you appoint your Kingas Marshal, the armies he leads will get a very high morale boost. If the King himself enters thebattle all those friendly units that see this heroic act of valour get an additional morale bonus.

1.1.1. King TalentsYour King can have up to five talents at 3 different levelsof development, which determine his personality. Thetalents and their level of development are fixed and do notchange: the higher the level of development, the higher thebonus for that talent. They are first shown when the Kingis a Prince and stay constant until his death. You cannotsee an enemy King’s talents.Economy: You get a bonus in your overall Kingdom income as well as benefits to

the King’s performance when he is assigned as a Merchant.Diplomacy: Your King’s diplomatic rating affects all diplomatic decisions. For

instance, a high rating means that you can more easily gain approval ofyour proposals.

Warfare: All of your armies receive a morale bonus based on this talent’s level of development.

Espionage: This talent increases the chance of success for all of your spies.Religion: This talent speeds the conversion process and improves your

Clerics’ performance.

1.2. Succession and HeirsWhen your King dies his rightful heir will succeed him. In the Royal Family window you canchoose which of his sons will be the rightful heir to the throne. To select the rightful heir:1. Roll the mouse pointer over the Prince(s) to see their future talents as King.2. Click on the portrait of the Prince you wish to inherit the throne.3. A crown indicates the inheriting Prince.4. If you want to change heirs, click another portrait and the crown will move.Be careful: in medieval times the eldest son traditionally inherited the throne via right ofsuccession and if you decide to give your Kingdom’s crown to the youngest son instead, hisbrothers may become rather angry when the day of inheritance comes.Apart from the King’s sons, all of the Princesses’ husbands can lay legitimate claim to the crown. When your King dies, all foreign Kings related to yours through a royal marriage between their

– 23 –

5. ClericReligion was very important during the Middle Ages and this is reflected in Knightsof Honor. The Cleric is your religious representative, helping you to increase the Pietyin your lands. You can also send him to convert Provinces of different religions toyour own religion after a successful conquest. A Cleric can also govern Provinces,

where he increases the Piety raised and writes books. An experienced Cleric may one daybecome the Pope or Patriarch.

6. LandlordLandlords are responsible for the food supply, which is the basis for developing yourlands. A Landlord helps you ensure that your population is more effective in theproduction and consumption of food. Under his government the population growsmore quickly and in sieges he rations the food consumption so your towns can

endure longer. He also allows you to have a higher population in your Provinces, which means ahigher tax income.

7. BuilderThe Builder takes care of construction in the town. He makes sure that your townsdevelop more quickly and are more efficient. A town can have a higher number ofworkers available in a Province governed by a Builder.

8. PrisonerImprisoned foreign Spies and Knights occupy a slot in your Royal Court. Clicking them letsyou decide whether to release them, kill them or hold them for ransom. Your Knights can alsobe imprisoned and you can either negotiate their freedom or leave them in the foreigndungeons. If you do not know where a spy comes from, you can torture him to find out. But beaware that he may die and your relationship with the Kingdom he comes from may worsenwhile your Kingdom Power drops significantly.

How To Build An Empire

1. Royal DynastyIn order to build an empire, a ruler has to founda dynasty. Empires are not conquered in a dayand only a long and lively lineage of kings andheirs can guarantee the successful growth andprosperity of the future empire. The dynasty is represented in the royal family treeand consists of the King, his wife and all theirsons and daughters. When you begin the gameyou will probably have a King, Queen and at leastone Prince or Princess. With time your RoyalFamily will grow and new children will be born

– 22 –

KOHpcMAN(E).qxd 2/9/04 1:41 pm Page 22

But don’t fall into the oldest of all traps: military power, although very important, is not enoughto build a true empire if used unwisely. You will need to be wise and consider your actionscarefully before deciding to send your armies on a rampage.

2.1. SquadsIn Knights of Honor you do not control individual members of your army but rather completegroups, which are called Units or Squads. Whenever you hire new troops, you hire completeUnits/Squads. The number of individuals in a Unit/Squad depends on the type of unitsrecruited. The only exception to this is siege weaponry, which is created and controlled on asingle unit basis.

2.2. ArmyIn order to wage war you must first build an army. An army consists of a Marshal, who leads upto nine squads of soldiers and up to four siege units. Also, every army has a separate food supplythat depletes over time when the army is not in town.

2.3 RecruitingYou can recruit squads from any town that you own. To recruit, you have todeploy a Marshal in the town and then click the Recruit Army button onthe interface. You will then see a menu with all units available in that town.If you roll the mouse pointer over a given unit type’s icon, you will see ashort description of the unit as well as the cost of recruiting one squad ofthat type. All costs are in gold and food, but in addition to that cost eachunit takes away one of your citizens. Be careful not to run out of citizenswhen recruiting units from towns with a smaller population. Each town hasthree types of units that you can recruit:• Special Units for the Kingdom you are playing. They can be recruited in

every Province you own.• Local Units available only in the region where the Province is located.• Provincial Special Units. They can only be recruited in this Province. Some units have prerequisites that must be met before they can be recruited. These could bebuildings, such as Stables for mounted units or a Swordsmith for sword units. The morecomplex the units are, the more prerequisites you need to meet – some units may have as manyas five prerequisites.

2.4. ExperienceEvery squad in your army gains experience from the battles they survive. With time, the squadwill increase its level and greatly enhance its statistics. There are three levels of experiencebeyond the initial rookie level: regular, veteran and elite. The current experience level isrepresented by the stars next to the portrait of the squads in the Battle View.

– 25 –

sons or themselves and one of your King’s daughters may decide to claim part of your empire. Ifyou deny them their rights they will go to war with you, so always think twice when marrying aPrincess to another Kingdom. If the King has no heirs, the royal succession passes to the Royal Court, where the mostdistinguished Knights will contest the crown between them and decide who will be the newKing. However, when the new King is appointed the other Knights may not accept him as theirliege and may rebel. This means that if your King dies and has no heirs to succeed him, there isa very good chance that your Kingdom will be plunged into a devastating civil war.

1.3. QueenThe Queen is the King’s royal wife. She is also mother to all of the Princes and Princesses. If one ofyour Princesses marries a foreign King, or an heir who becomes King, your country will be stronglyrepresented in that particular court, resulting in better chances for espionage on your behalf.

1.4. PrinceProbably the Queen’s most important duty is to provide the Kingdom and royal dynasty with atleast one Prince. If the King has fathered a Prince, you can rest assured that when the timecomes the royal dynasty will continue smoothly. Of course, the more Princes your King andQueen have, the better off your Kingdom is.Apart from being useful as a political asset, your Prince is also very important for saving yourKingdom money, for he can perform all duties that a regular Knight can perform, but withoutcharge. So, in effect, your Prince is a free Knight. Don’t get carried away, though, and risk yourPrinces too lightly: you may save money but, if the worst comes to the worst, you can lose yourPrinces and leave the Kingdom without an heir. You can marry your Prince off to a foreign royal family. By doing so you are entitled to a futureclaim on their crown, in the form of one to three Provinces. When the foreign King dies youcan choose whether to exercise your claim or not. Of course, if you don’t claim part of theforeign Kingdom your relationship with it will improve. Your Prince has to be alive in order tobe able to make a claim. Just don’t forget that everything said about claims up to now alsoapplies when a foreign Prince is part of your royal family and your King dies.

1.5. PrincessIn Knights of Honor princesses are valuable diplomatic assets. Whenever you are trying to pull offa diplomatic deal, you can offer the hand of a Princess to improve the relationship, which willalso greatly improve your chances of persuading the other side to accept a proposal. Vice versa, another ruler may suggest a Royal Wedding too, either as a requirement or just as a normalproposal (see also section 4. Diplomacy on p. 35).When you marry a Princess off you will get a hefty bonus on all espionage activities in thatKingdom, with the bonus increasing greatly should the Princess become queen (see also section5. Espionage, on p. 38). Just keep in mind that by marrying off a Princess, you also grant theirhusband the right to a future claim on your lands.

2. WarfareThe number one method of expanding and building an empire is by conquest. World historyhas records of numerous campaigns, wars and conflicts, all with the same ultimate goal: toconquer more lands and become more powerful. In Knights of Honor we have kept to thistradition and have provided you with many tools to plan, execute and maintain your conquests.

LandThis command can be issued only to an army onboard a ship. The army will disembark fromthe ship at the target location. If the target is inland they will disembark at the coast and marchto the desired position. After the army has left the ship, it disappears.

Build ShipYour Marshal must have the Admiral skill and the army has to make a camp close to the shore. When you give the order to build a ship, the army approaches the shore and starts building. After a while the army will appear on a ship in the water.

2.8. BattlesBattle TypesIn Knights of Honor whenever your army meets an enemy object (army, rural area, town) youautomatically engage in battle. There are different types of battles based on the object, terrain orcircumstances that preceded the battle.

2.8.1 World View SimulationAll battles can be fought without going into the Battle View. Instead, the battle will besimulated in the Strategic View. During the battle you can click on it and you will see the typeof battle, the leaders of the armies taking part (with their respective bonuses) and arepresentation of the course of the battle. All conditions such as army morale and terrain aretaken into account when calculating the outcome of the battle.2.8.2. Open Field

This battle is held in the open between enemyarmies. Each side can use up to two armies, entering battle with one army and reinforcing withthe second later on. You can also choose to lead the

battle personally, in which case a battle will be spawned in Battle View. The objective here is todestroy the enemy army or force a retreat.

2.8.3. PlunderingPlundering occurs when an army attacks a ruralarea in enemy territory, with the main aims beingto gain plunder or to weaken the enemy. If the areais undefended, the battle ends after a given time. If

a defending army attacks during plundering you can choose to lead your army and a battle willbe spawned in Battle View. This battle will featurea rural area and the objective is either to defendthe rural area or to destroy the defending army. When the plundering army wins the battle, therural area is destroyed.

2.8.4. Town AssaultA Town Assault automatically occurs whenever anarmy attacks a town without a wall. If you chooseto lead the battle, a battle will be spawned in BattleView. Your army will be inside the town when you

– 27 –

2.5. ReplenishmentWhen you fight battles you will eventually take casualties. You can replenish squads fromany town that you own. When restocking squads you actually put fresh soldiers amongst

the veterans, thus diluting the squad’s experience and increasing the time it takes them toincrease in level. You can replenish every type of unit in every town.

2.6. Food WagonRecruited armies require food to support themselves during their march. Whenstationed in a town, an army uses food from the town reserves, but when you orderyour marshal to go on a military campaign, the army starts to consume food from its

own stock, which will eventually be used up. When that happens, the army receives a penalty ontheir morale due to low rations. The amount of food carried is represented by the Food Wagonicon in the interface. It can be restocked in two ways:• When the army is deployed in a town, click on the wagon and it will automatically refill.

Be aware that this food will be transferred from the town’s food storage.• When the army is marching in enemy territory you can command them to plunder a farm

and you will get food as loot.

2.7. Army CommandsYou can order your army to perform different actions while playing in the Strategic View.

MoveThis is a basic command that tells your army to move to the location you choose with the mouse. In order to move across the sea, you have to board ships in a harbour or build your own ships.

StopThis orders your army to stop executing the previously issued command.

CampWhen given this command, your army will build a camp and begin resting. While camping thearmy replenishes lost morale and eats less food.

FortifyThe army builds a fortified camp, which can be defended against attack much more successfully.Your Marshal has to have the Tactics skill to be able to use this command.

AttackThis is a generic command that includes attacking an enemy army, reinforcing a battle, plundering a rural area or assaulting an enemy town.

SiegeThe army will lay siege to the enemy town. When the town’s food reserves are depleted it willfall. But if the army’s food is gone before the town’s runs out, it may break off the siege.

Board ShipThis command can be only issued if the chosen target is a harbour. The army will go to the harbourand, after a short pause for boarding, the army will appear onboard a ship close to the harbour.

KOHpcMAN(E).qxd 2/9/04 1:41 pm Page 26

serious hurdle for all mounted units: if you have cavalry in your army you should avoid battlesin forested areas at all costs. Ranged units are also at a disadvantage in forests. The hills areheaven for ranged units as those on higher ground are far more effective than those below them. The mountains are impassable in Knights of Honor which makes the passes an important strategicasset. The big rivers spawn River Cross battles, while the seas can only be crossed with ships.

2.10. MoraleThe units in Knights of Honor don’t have hit points: they only have one life and if hit they dieinstantly. So in order to win you have to either kill the entire enemy army or scare it away. Theunits’ morale is the measure of how eager to fight each unit is, so with a carefully planned strikeyou can win the battle with fewer troops than your enemy.

2.10.1. DefinitionMorale is the amount of confidence of a given unit to fight. It is calculated per unit and shownboth per squad and per army. Morale is dynamic and changes all the time to accommodate thechanging conditions in the game.

2.10.2. FactorsMorale is affected by many factors, such as heavy losses, fighting on enemy territory, nightmarches, the enemy army leader fighting with his army and so on. Many global economic, diplomatic and religious factors can also affect the army’s morale. The best way to rebuildmorale is to make the army set up camp often.

2.11. FormationsSince you command squads, not single fighters, they can be ordered to assume three differentformations to improve their tactical advantage. Once your squad assumes formation you canorder it to change formation or to wheel left or right. You can also decide whether you want anarrow or a looser formation.

Square FormationSquare is the bread-and-butter formation for sword-wielding units. It is a robust formation thatturns easily and is quick to face the enemy, avoiding flanking or rear attacks.

Wedge FormationThis is mainly a cavalry formation and is used to break the enemy’s battle order and lower theirmorale. The wedge is very dangerous, especially when used with heavy cavalry, but it is alsorecommended when used with shock troops like the Teutonic Knights.

Line FormationThe line formation places the squads in two or three lines (based on the squad size). Thisformation is best for pole arm units (spears, halberds, etc.) since it allows the units in the rearranks to fight together with those in the first rank. It is also good for ranged units.

Wide FormationWide formations are less efficient in melee but are harder to hit with arrows.

Narrow FormationDense formations are more efficient in melee but are also more vulnerable to arrows.

– 29 –

are the defender and your objective is to defend the town. If you are the attacker then yourtroops are placed outside the town and your objective is to conquer the town. If the attackingarmy wins, the Province will fall into their hands. The defender can use up to two armies todefend his castle, plus the garrison and the castle guards from the Town Watch building. Theattacker can have up to two armies engaging in this battle.

2.8.5. SiegeIf the town has a Palisade, Stone Wall or Bulwarkthen the attacking army can decide to lay siege tothe town, simply starving them out. The siege lastsas long as the town has food reserves or until the

attacking army’s food reserves are gone. The attacker can decide to assault the town at any time,at which point the Town Assault mechanics come into play. However, the defending army candecide to try to break the siege and again the Town Assault map will be loaded. When the townruns out of food they give up and the Province falls into the hands of the attacker.

2.8.6. River CrossA River Cross battle occurs when one army meetsanother army while crossing a river. If you decideto lead the battle, a River Cross battle will bespawned in Battle View. The defending army is

placed on the shore with armed watch towers, while the attacking army appears on rafts in themiddle of the river. The attacker’s immediate task is to land under fire from the defender’sranged squads and towers and then form a battle order and attack.

2.8.7. Camp AssaultA Camp Assault battle occurs when an armyattacks a camped army. If you decide to lead thebattle, a Camp Assault battle is spawned in BattleView. The defending army is caught unawares and

the army is divided across a number of tents. If the attacker is quick to advance he could over-runthe defender’s camp before the latter has time to break camp and arrange his battle formation.

2.8.8. Fortified Camp AssaultThis is a version of the previous battle but withone important difference: the defender’s camp iswell fortified and there are towers protecting thetents. It is much more difficult to overrun this type

of camp. To fortify a camp, the Marshal has to have the Tactics skill.

2.8.9. Sea BattleA Sea Battle occurs when two ships meet at sea. This battle cannot be led but is simulated inStrategic View.

2.9. TerrainThe terrain plays a very important role in Knights of Honor. There are five basic types of terrain:plains, forests, hills, mountains and water. The plains are the basic terrain type, with penalties orbonuses for all units – depending on formations, marshal skills and unit types. The forests are a

3.1.1. GoldYour primary resource is gold. You can earn gold in many ways – your main sources of incomeare taxes, direct income from certain buildings, trade, diplomatic tributes, religious payments, plundering and so on.Income

Your income statement shows where your gold comes from. The income from trade is summarised. If you want to checkhow much a particular route is making, roll your mousepointer over the Knight you have assigned as Merchant onthat route. All happy citizens pay taxes: if you raise the taxlevel you will collect more, but you will have more unhappycitizens who don’t pay taxes. So be careful when you raise thetaxes, as sometimes you can actually lose money. On the

other hand, if your citizens are very happy you could raise the tax level and increase yourincome a lot. If your income is greater than your expenses your profit is shown in green next tothe balance in the top right-hand corner.ExpendituresThe expenses part of your income statement shows all regular monetary outgoings. The upkeepfor your Knights is one of the major expenses. The upkeep is progressive, so for each additionalKnight in a profession you will pay more. This means that having three Marshals will costalmost twice as much as having a Marshal, a Cleric and a Spy. Members of your Royal Familydon’t require upkeep, so you can use them for free. You also incur expenses if you importresources or if you have to pay vassalage or religious fees. If your expenses are more than yourincome, your loss is shown in red next to the balance in the top right-hand corner.InflationThe most important expense is Inflation. This occurs when the amount of gold in your treasuryis much greater than the gross income of your Kingdom. You can avoid inflation by spendingsome of the gold in your treasury or by increasing your income. Please note that inflation takesyour income into account, so even if you are operating at a loss, a high enough income will stillprevent inflation.

3.1.2. PietyPiety is a resource that quantifies your Kingdom’s and subjects’ religious fervour. It is producedin churches and cathedrals in towns, and in monasteries/mosques. You need to spend Piety formany religious and state activities.

3.1.3. BooksBooks are very important to your cultural advancement. Books are written in Libraries andUniversities and your Clerics automatically write Books when assigned as governors. You needbooks to adopt populations in conquered territories and to educate your Knights.

3.2. Kingdom PowerKingdom Power is a representation of your Kingdom’s stability and prosperity – the greater yourpower, the better it will be. Each level of Kingdom Power will bring you reduced risk ofrebellion and additional gold income. You can raise your Kingdom Power at any time by payinga certain amount of Gold and Piety, based on your Kingdom’s size and constitution.Dishonourable diplomatic activities on your part will hurt your Kingdom Power greatly. TheKingdom Power meter is in the upper-left part of the screen and ranges from -5 to +5.

– 31 –

WheelingYou can wheel your squads left and right to improve the effect of the chosen formation and toavoid flank attacks.

FacingSquads can be ordered to immediately face in a specified direction.

2.12. RebelsRebel armies spawn in Provinces where the Rebellion Risk has become unbearably high. Theyalways have a leader, the Rebel. Rebels have no banner and dress in white. Rebel armies usuallyonly have Peasants. If you do not fight the Rebels, they may decide to assault your town andclaim independence. After a while a Rebel becomes a Famous Rebel and is much harder to beat. They then start attacking neighbouring Provinces. Rebels disappear when the Rebellion Riskdecreases or when killed.

2.13. LoyalistsAfter a Province has been conquered, nostalgia is so great that Loyalist armies spawn. They stillfeel loyal to their old Kingdom and start to plunder or attack the new ruler’s armies. Loyalistscan be easily identified; they carry two flags, one white (for rebels) and one with the old ruler’sbanner. They fight independently and cannot be controlled by the player. They disappear eitherwhen nostalgia decreases or when killed.

2.14. MercenariesFrom time to time you will get a message that Mercenaries are camped near a town of yours. Tofind out what units are available to hire, you have to click on their camp. If there are squads youlike, you can hire them for a price much lower than that of producing them. It is always worthfinding out what units are on offer, as very advanced and rare units may be offering theirservices. To hire units you must bring a Marshal to the camp.

2.15. Crusader ArmiesWhen your Cleric has been appointed Pope, you can assign your Marshals to be Crusaders andlead Crusader armies. You can then tell each Marshal to begin a Crusade againstexcommunicated and non-Catholic Kingdoms.

3. EconomyIn order to have a better understanding of the economy in Knights of Honor, you have to grasp thestructure of the economic system. No matter which flag you choose, you always start the gamewith one Kingdom. Some Kingdoms only have one Province, whilst others have many. In order totransform your Kingdom into an empire you need to know the building blocks of your Kingdom.

3.1. Kingdom TreasuryEvery action you take needs a certain investment on your side. Youcan accumulate resources so that when the time is right you can

spend them to build an army, call a crusade or take over a conquered town more quickly. Ashort summary of your global treasury can be found in the upper-right part of the screen anddetailed information in the Kingdom Wealth screen, which you can open from the bottominterface or by clicking on one of the three symbols in your Kingdom Treasury.

– 30 –

KOHpcMAN(E).qxd 2/9/04 1:41 pm Page 30

3.5. Happiness and Risk of RebellionYour actions can raise the risk of rebellion in your Kingdom. Youcan check what exactly is influencing the risk by opening the

Happiness (Risk of Rebellion) window. If the risk is negative you don’t needto worry, but if it’s positive the chance of an outbreak of rebellion is muchgreater.

3.6. Rural AreasAs mentioned before, resources are produced in rural areas. Each time you start the game therural areas will be reset and you will have a different choice of rural areas to play with, even ifyou are playing with the same Kingdom. By building specific buildings in the town you canincrease the rural areas’ production.Farms The farms produce food.Monasteries/Mosques Piety is raised in the Monasteries/Mosques.Villages The Villages provide the town with workers.Coastal Villages In Coastal Villages you earn gold from the trading taking

place there. Coastal Villages grant the town additionalbuildings and are only available in Provinces with an outletto the sea.

3.7. Governing a ProvinceYou can assign all types of Knights, except Marshals and Spies, to be governors in your towns. Atown can only have one governor and, depending on his profession, he brings different bonusesto the Province. Some of the game functionality is only available to Knights if they aregovernors. For example, the Cleric can only convert the religion of a given Province if he isgoverning it from the town.

3.8. Kingdom AdvantagesKingdom Advantages are rare economic achievements that give your Kingdom unique bonuses. You can see all Advantages and their respective bonuses in theKingdom Advantages window. In order to achieve an advantage, you have to possess all the Trade Goods and Exotic Goodsshown below each of the advantages. The advantages youcurrently do not possess are shown as silhouettes. When yougain one of these Kingdom Advantages it appears in colour. When a Province where one or more of the goods are producedis lost to the enemy, the Kingdom Advantage will also disappearimmediately and a replacement for the resource must be found.Age of Discoveries

Entering the Age of Discoveries will allow you to access never before seen riches. Yourships return fully loaded from the New World and cause all your Coastal Villages toraise additional gold.

Age of EnlightenmentAccessing the Age of Enlightenment will allow you to hire the most respectedscientists, doctors and philosophers to teach at your Universities. The number ofbooks written in your Universities increases.

– 33 –

3.3. TownsIn every Province there is one town. This is the heart of the Province and all settings affectingyour Province are made here. Your towns will gradually develop and with every newimprovement you make they will increase in size and capacity.Clicking on any of your towns will open the town interface, which offers a lot of informationincluding the town’s name and the Province. You can see also how much the town is producing, the risk of revolt, the governor, the garrison and the town’s deployed armies.

3.3.1. Town Resources

In addition to the global resources collected in the Kingdom Treasury every town has a stock oflocal resources – food and workers – which are produced and used only in the towns. All resourcesare collected from the rural areas, with local resources staying in the town treasuries and globalresources being redirected to the Kingdom Treasury. In addition to production in the rural areas, every town has a base amount of gold, food and workers that it produces itself. All production(including base town production) can be increased through certain buildings and improvements.FoodFood is produced on farms and in some town buildings. It is stored locally in each town. It isused during sieges, to replenish the army’s food supply and as part of the cost of recruitment fornew units.WorkersThe Workers are a representation of the town’s building potential. The majority of Workerscome from the villages but some buildings in the town also grant additional Workers. The moreWorkers a town has, the faster its improvements will be completed.

3.4. Town ImprovementsIn every town you can build a number of improvements toenhance resource production, defence capabilities and unit

recruitment, or to unlock new buildings. There are three groups ofbuildings: Military, Civilian and Advanced Structures. You can only make18 improvements to your town, so choose carefully. To erect a newbuilding, click on an empty slot and all available buildings will appear asicons. Buildings that can’t be built yet appear shaded, whilst buildingsthat can’t be built at all appear as grey stones. To find out therequirements for a building, roll the mouse pointer over the icon.

import the needed product. You can check the Royal Library for a comprehensive list of allassets and valuables.

3.11. Exotic GoodsExotic Goods are similar to valuables, but they cannot be produced. Asthe name suggests, they come from exotic countries and can only beimported by towns which have built an admiralty. When the Provincefalls into the enemy hands, so does the supply of Exotic Goods.

4. DiplomacyAlmost every action you take has consequences – not only military andeconomic but also diplomatic. You cannot invade a foreign countrywithout declaring war. If you conquer an enemy, his friends will not likeyou. If you are too weak then several of your enemies may unite to dealyou a coordinated blow. To cut a long story short, you may have a lot ofdiplomatic work to do before you draw your sword. In order to engage indiplomatic activities you have to select the Kingdom you want tonegotiate with and ask for an audience with the present ruler.

4.1. King Personalities

Every Kingdom is represented by its ruler. Clicking a specific Kingdom will display its ruler’sportrait. Every ruler has personality traits, which play an important role in their decisions on alldiplomatic and military matters.Ungrateful An ungrateful ruler is more likely to ask for more tribute than to perform

goodly deeds.Ruthless A ruthless ruler is more likely to break agreements and promises. He is

also more likely to plunder.Militarist A militaristic ruler is more likely to go to war and is reluctant to accept peace.Timid A timid ruler is more likely to underestimate himself and is easier to

persuade. He is also more likely to be weaker in his choice of language.Greedy A greedy ruler is more likely to be interested in buying cheaply, while

selling expensively. He is also likely to negotiate terms.Honourable An honourable ruler is more likely to keep promises, but on the other

hand is more upset by broken promises.Grateful A grateful ruler is more likely to improve his relations with Kingdoms

who offer gifts and perform good deeds.Religious A religious ruler is more likely to focus on the religious development and

prefers to deal with Kingdoms of his own religion.Arrogant An arrogant ruler is more likely to overestimate himself and is less afraid

of others. He also tends to speak rudely more often.

Crop RotationCrop Rotation is an outstanding farming achievement. It enables your farmers toexploit your farmlands more effectively and increases food output while granting youadditional food storage within your towns.

Glorious ConquestCreation of the Glorious Conquest will improve your military ability immensely. Itcauses all of your units to fight even more bravely and have a higher morale.

Grand CathedralThe main achievement of the Grand Cathedral is to increase the faith within yourKingdom. Visitors to your Cathedrals will be awed, the amount of Piety raised isincreased and all of the Cathedrals' bonuses will be increased.

Grand FortressCreating the Grand Fortress makes your population feel safer under your protection.During sieges, your towns stand longer against the besieging enemy.

Secret OrderEstablishing the Secret Order gives your spies a significant advantage in espionage. Yourspies get better training and gain more knowledge, improving their chance of success.

Silk RouteDiscovery of the famous Silk Route grants you access to previously unknown preciousgoods. The demand for these goods is so high that the income of all your Merchants increases.

Spring FestivalsGranting your citizens Spring Festivals provides a welcome alternative to their dailyhard work. Ale consumption increases and famous bards entertain the people. Itincreases the happiness in towns that have an inn or hostel.

UrbanisationStarting the Urbanisation of your Kingdom attracts more serfs from other Kingdomsto move into your towns, increasing your population.

3.9. Province FeaturesEach Province can have different types of terrain called Province Features.A Province can have up to 3 or none at all. These allow you to buildadditional structures that can later produce Trade Goods. For instance, the Province Feature Brine Deposits allows you to build a Salt Mine.

3.10. Trade GoodsTrade Goods are medieval productsobtained from the assets in your Provincethrough manufacturing. You must havebuilt the appropriate buildings to obtain

the required Trade Goods. If you cannot produce a Trade Good you can import it from anotherKingdom that does. Just check the Political View via the Province Feature and Goods filter tosee who has the needed Trade Good, establish a Trade Agreement and send a Merchant to

4.6. Diplomatic AssetsWhen negotiating a given agreement you may be asked for diplomatic assets to sweeten the deal. You can also demand assets from other Kingdoms. The available diplomatic assets are:GoldYou can offer the selected ruler Gold. When offering Gold you must choose from the suggestedamounts. The higher the amount, the more pleased the selected ruler will be. Of course, youcan ask the selected ruler for Gold too.LandTo please the selected ruler, you can offer him one of your Provinces. There is no limit and youcan theoretically grant him all of your Provinces but one. On the other hand, you can demandland from him, unless he only has one Province left.Royal WeddingThe Princesses are a great asset: arranging a wedding with a foreign Prince or King makes yourKingdoms kin, increasing the relationship greatly.VassalageYour greatest asset is your independence. If you give it up, you are then paying tribute toanother Kingdom. However, sometimes it is better to have a strong protector.

4.7 Diplomatic ActionsDepending on your Kingdom’s state, different diplomatic options are open to you.

4.7.1. At PeaceWhen you are at peace with the Kingdom you are negotiating with, you can offer a gift, proposea wedding or propose a trade agreement. You can also demand an attack on another Kingdomor that they break off relations with another Kingdom. Of course, you can always break off allrelations or declare war (you can not attack enemy buildings or armies without declaring war). Ifyou break off relations, your Kingdom Power will drop.4.7.2. Existing Trade AgreementWhen you trade with another Kingdom you have the same options as when you’re at peace, except that you can now also offer a Pact of Non-Aggression.

4.7.3. Existing Pact of Non-AggressionWhen you have a Pact of Non-Aggression you have the same options as when you’re at peace, except that you can now offer an Alliance Pact. If you break your agreements then yourKingdom Power will drop.4.7.4. Existing Alliance PactIf you are allied with the Kingdom you are negotiating with, you can invoke your alliance tomake him attack a Kingdom you are at war with.4.7.5. Being VassalIf you are vassal to another Kingdom, one of the options you have is to declare independence. To do so you have to break all agreements with them, but note that this will mean you areautomatically at war with them.4.7.6. At WarIf you are at war, you can only propose a peace agreement.White PeaceIf you feel that you and your enemy are equally matched, you can propose a White Peace. Thismeans that the war will end immediately without further repercussions.

– 37 –

Expansionist An expansionist ruler is more likely to agree to higher terms whenacquiring land and does not give land away easily. He is easily upsetabout lost land.

Pacifist A pacifistic ruler is more likely to agree to peace quickly and oftenhesitates to go to war.

4.2. Vassalage/IndependenceKingdoms can be independent or they can be vassal to another kingdom. A vassal can declareindependence, in which case war is declared on the former sovereign. Being a vassal means thatthe vassal pays 50% of its total income to the overlord as a constant tribute.

4.3. StancesThe diplomatic situation changes constantly. The stances betweenKingdoms can be: at war, at peace, kin, trading, non-aggression

pact or allied. When the stance is “at war”, the only option is to negotiate for peace.

4.4. RelationshipThe relationship is the foundation of all politics. Your Kingdom’s relationshipwith your neighbours, friends and enemies will change dynamically with every

action you take and sometimes even without your involvement. Other kings’ decisions dependmostly on their relationship with you. If the relationship is good the chances of a ruler accepting adiplomatic proposal are higher than if not. A good relationship does not automatically mean youare at peace, nor does a bad one mean you are at war. However, if your relationship with someoneis poor and you do something which angers them, the chance of them declaring war is high.

4.5. AgreementsIn Knights of Honor you can have several diplomatic agreements. Agreements can be seen ascontracts signed between two Kingdoms.

4.5.1. Trade AgreementThis agreement enables you to trade with a given Kingdom, establishing a trade route betweenyour Kingdom and the other. If you assign a Merchant to this route he can either trade for goldor import goods

4.5.2. Pact of Non-AggressionThis agreement is in effect a mutual promise not to attack each other, as long as the agreementexists. You have to have a Trade Agreement in place to sign this. If you break this agreement, youwill suffer a penalty to your Kingdom Power and all Kingdoms will regard you as less worthy.

4.5.3. Alliance PactThis agreement is one step further than the Pact of Non-Aggression, as it contains a promise tohelp against a common enemy. You have to have the two previous agreements in order to signthis one. If you break this agreement, you will suffer a severe penalty to your Kingdom Powerand all Kingdoms will regard you as much less worthy. When an Alliance Pact is signed, a newoption becomes available in the audience window, allowing you to invoke the alliance when youare at war with someone else.

Sabotage Trade Route This will make the other Kingdom cancel their Trade (Merchant – trading) Agreement they have with the Kingdom he has infiltrated.Arrange Annexation This allows you to annex all of the infiltrated Kingdom’s (Merchant) lands. You can only issue this command when the target

Kingdom is smaller than yours or a vassal.Assassinate King (Spy – idle) The Spy will try to kill the infiltrated Kingdom’s ruler.

Assassinate Royal Family The Spy will try to kill a member of the infiltrated (Spy – idle) Kingdom’s Royal Family.Nasty Gossip (Spy) The Spy can make the infiltrated Kingdom break all

agreements with you. This is useful when you want to attack and avoid the drop in Kingdom Power arising from breaking all agreements.

Peace Persuasion (Marshal) The Spy will persuade the infiltrated Kingdom’s ruler to offer you peace.

Instigate Army Revolt This will turn all of the infiltrated Kingdom’s armies into (Marshal) rebel armies, which then start to fight their former ruler.Excommunicate The Spy excommunicates another Kingdom for you.(Cleric who is Pope)Divert Crusade When participating in a Crusade, the Spy can divert the (Marshal who is Crusader) Crusade against someone else.Hand Over Crown When your Spy becomes King you can ask him to hand (Puppet King) over the crown to you and all the lands will fall to

your Kingdom.Invade (Marshal When your Marshal leads a rebel army, you can order him who is a Rebel) to invade a specific Province.Preach Crusade (Infiltrated The Spy calls for a Crusade against a specific Kingdom. spy as Cleric is Pope) The Spy must be infiltrated into the Papacy as Cleric and

elected Pope.

5.4. Counter-espionageYou can protect your court from enemy spies by keeping a Spy unassigned. He will only activelysearch for enemy spies and inform you of their presence when staying in the court. The moreexperienced he is, the greater the chances are that he will detect foreign spies.

5.5. CapturingIf your Spy fails on a mission or is revealed by a counterspy, he may be captured. Ifcaptured he will go to prison and you will either have to ransom him out, or deny anyconnection with him – ignoring his pleas to free him and instead abandoning him.The chance of success increases once more experienced spies have infiltrated the court.

– 39 –

TributeIf one side performed much better than the other in a given war, they maywant a certain tribute before they sign the peace agreement. The tribute is inthe form of one or several diplomatic assets. You can demand or offer tribute.

5. EspionageThe dark and shady ways of the Spy are yet another way to help yourself on your road to Empire.

5.1. InfiltrationIn order to be able to conduct espionage, you have to have a Knight assigned as a Spy.After you have assigned a Spy you must select the Kingdom you want him toinfiltrate. He will then enter the Kingdom unrecognised and wait to be assigned as a

member of the enemy court. Every time the enemy hires a Knight in his court, there is a chancethat this Knight will be your spy. The more experienced he is, the faster this will happen. However, the court may not assign a new Knight for a while. During the infiltration process asmall eye icon appears below his portrait.

5.2. Active SpyOnce the spy manages to successfully infiltrate the other Kingdom’s Royal Court, you will benotified. You now have new options available. The icon below his portrait also changes to matchthe profession he is assuming in the other Royal Court.

5.3. Spy ActionsThe actions your Spy can perform depend greatly on the profession he has been assigned. Forexample, if he is hired as a Marshal he can induce a rebellion amongst the Kingdom’s armies orpersuade the ruler to sign a secret peace treaty with you. If he is a Cleric he can secretly spreadyour religion instead of the enemy religion. He can even become King of the enemy Kingdom ifthe ruler dies and there are no heirs. Explore the opportunities available when your spy is hiredfor different professions.

Propagate Culture (Cleric) Raises nostalgic feelings in all border Provinces of theinfiltrated Kingdom.

Spread Heresy Makes a Province accept paganism as their religion.(Cleric – governing)Spread Religion Makes a Province accept your religion.(Cleric – governing)Hand Over Town (Builder, When governing a town the spy can hand over the town Landlord, Merchant, without a fight.Cleric – governing)Claim Independency The Spy claims independence for the Province he is (Builder, Landlord, governing and becomes King of the newly formed Kingdom.Merchant, Cleric – governing) The new Kingdom’s relationship with you will be very good.Steal Gold (Merchant) The Spy steals gold from the infiltrated Kingdom’s Treasury.

6.6. Accepting A New ReligionYou can change your Kingdom’s religion at any time, although you need to have enoughProvinces of the chosen religion in your possession. It also costs you Gold and Piety. When youconvert, your Kingdom Power will drop dramatically and you will have to convert all yourProvinces to the new religion, one by one. Your Kingdom cannot choose to embrace Paganism, although others may.

6.7. Religious FiguresThroughout history each religion has had its focus points. In Knights of Honor we have recreatedthe Vatican and The Byzantine Patriarchy.

The PopeThe Pope is the head of the Roman Catholic church. He is the principal of the onlyunplayable Kingdom in the game – The Papal States. He has a special status because

he can excommunicate Kingdoms that have strayed from the path of God, or call crusadesagainst infidels (including excommunicated Catholic Kingdoms). When the Pope dies a newPope is elected from all of the available Clerics in the Royal courts of all Catholic Kingdoms. Thestronger the Kingdom and the higher the Cleric’s level, the better the chance of his being electedPope. If your Cleric gets elected Pope you will be able to excommunicate and call Crusadesthrough him. But be careful – if you abuse this power the Pope may get angry at you.

The PatriarchThe Patriarch has no special functions, except that if you have an independentchurch and you assign your Patriarch as governor he will perform his duties far better

than an ordinary Cleric.Note: When a Kingdom has been excommunicated or declared independence then theirreligious symbol appears as a flaming symbol.

MultiplayerKnights of Honor can be played simultaneously by up to 6 people over LAN, TCP/IP Internet orthrough the GameSpy matchmaking service. You can test your battle skills against your friends infour different modes.

6. ReligionJust as in the Middle Ages, religion plays a very important role in Knights of Honor. Your Kingdomcan follow one of the four different religions, each of which has its advantages and disadvantages.

6.1. CatholicThe Catholic religion is common to most of Western Europe. It is spread from Romeand the Pope is its patron. Catholicism gives a Kingdom an income bonus. If you areCatholic you must behave properly, refraining from attacking other Catholic nations and

keeping up your relationship with the Pope. If the Pope decides that you are not behavingproperly, he can excommunicate you. You then lose all bonuses and other Catholic Kingdomscan attack you without penalty or even declare a Crusade against you.

6.2. OrthodoxThe Orthodox church is based in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe. The Orthodoxchurch’s patron is the Patriarch. If you play an Orthodox Kingdom, you will at first besubordinated to the Byzantine Patriarch. As a subordinated Kingdom you will

automatically receive an income bonus and Piety bonus but your armies will have a lowermorale than normal. At any point later on in the game you can declare your churchindependent. To do so you need to have a level 5 Cleric present in your Royal Court, who thenbecomes your own Patriarch. The Cleric also has to be a normal Knight and not a member ofthe Royal Family. When you become an Independent Orthodox Kingdom you receive a Bookbonus and your armies’ morale will be normal, but you lose the Gold and Piety bonuses.Your Patriarch ages and will eventually die of old age. When this happens you have to have aneligible replacement or your church will lose its independence and you will again besubordinated to Byzantium. Of course, you can also play as the Byzantine empire, in which caseyou will not suffer from the morale penalty, but do gain the Piety and Gold bonuses.Additionally, you will have a new income subject on your balance sheet: you receive a constantpayment from all subordinated Orthodox Kingdoms.

6.3. MuslimThe Muslim Kingdoms are based in North Africa and the Middle East, as well assouthern Spain in the early periods of the game. The Muslim religion gives a bonus onyour units’ morale. This religion doesn’t have a patron. Only Muslim nations can call a

Jihad, which is for defensive purposes only. When a Jihad is called, rebel armies spawn at theMosques and attack any infidel army within the Kingdom’s territory.

6.4. PaganismThe Pagan Kingdoms are mainly descendants of the tribes that invaded Europe during the DarkAges. If you play with a Pagan Kingdom you don’t collect Piety at all and you have a penalty onyour Kingdom’s income.

6.5. ConversionWhen you conquer a Province with a religion different from your own, you can choose toconvert it to your state religion. This is done with the help of a Cleric, assigned as governor ofthe Province. When a Province you rule has a different religion, this increases the unhappinessand risk of rebellion in the Province.

Lechfeld (955 AD)The Magyar threat escalated quickly in the middle of the tenth century. Otto I assembled astrike force of 4000 heavily armoured Knights and rode to meet the Magyar army nearAugsburg. The battle took place between the rivers Lech and Schmutter. Otto achieved aresounding victory. He managed to capture or kill most of the Magyar nobility and effectivelyput an end to the Magyar invasion.

Hastings (1066 AD)Fought on the 14th October 1066 between William, Duke of Normandy and King HaroldGodwinson of England, this battle was a turning point in English history. This battle is alsoremembered for the heavy casualties that were suffered by both sides. The Battle of Hastings wasthe last time England was successfully invaded and conquered by a foreign army.

Hattin (1187 AD)The battle of the Horns of Hattin on July 4th 1187 was one of the bloodiest battles of theCrusades. Its final outcome was disastrous, the end result being the destruction of the crusaderarmy of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. It also led to the eventual capture of Jerusalem by theMuslim forces of Saladin. He destroyed the crusader Kingdom and in a way created the motivefor the Third Crusade.

Lake Peipus (1242 AD)The battle at Lake Peipus was fought between the Teutonic Knights and the inspirational Kniaz ofNovgorod, Aleksander Nevski. The Teutonic Order had the backing of the Pope and the Emperorof the Holy Roman Empire but they still could not break the resistance of the Russian city-state.This fierce battle at the frozen shores of the Baltic lake brought the eastern crusades to an end.

Bannockburn (1314 AD)Bannockburn was the climax of King Robert the Bruce’s career. The death of ‘iron’ Edward I(Longshanks) had left England ruled by his son and heir Edward II, who was not forged fromthe same mould as his father! His carelessness allowed the Scots to recover from the heavy blowshis father had dealt them and by 1314 Robert the Bruce had captured almost every English citynorth of York. Edward II gathered an army and marched forth to subdue the Scots but Brucewon the decisive battle at Bannockburn and thus gave Scotland its independence.

Nikopol (1396 AD)By the late 14th Century the once mighty Byzantine Empire had been reduced to little morethan the city of Constantinople. In 1391 the Ottoman ruler Bayazid besieged the city. PopeBoniface IX called for a crusade and John De Nevers, the son of the Duke of Burgundy, led aFranco-Burgundian army to fight the Ottomans. He was joined by King Sigizmund of Hungary. The crusaders met the Ottomans at Nikopol on the Danube. The arrogance of the Frenchnobles was once again shown, when John De Nevers led his Knights into a frontal charge of theOttoman positions without waiting for the bulk of the army to follow. The Turks tookadvantage of this reckless act and counter-attacked the Franks with their heavy cavalry andSerbian allied regiments. The last crusade ended infamously on the banks of the Danube.

2.4. King of TowersKing of Towers is a special mode of play where both sides compete for the towers on thebattlefield. In this mode you will play on an open field with a set number of towers on the field. In the beginning the towers are neutral. You have to capture as many towers as possible, as every
