KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
The Knights of Columbus is a fraternal benefit society
that is strong, secure and stable. Members can be
confident that we’ll be here when you need us. We’ve
been successfully protecting families since 1882, and our
outlook remains bright.
Don’t just take our word for it. There is no more highly
rated insurer in North America than the Knights of
Columbus. A.M. Best has bestowed on us their highest
rating (A++, Superior) for 35 consecutive years.
Remember, in 2010, the Knights of Columbus gave more
than $154 million to Catholic and other charitable
causes. In these uncertain times, find comfort in an
organization that leads the way in doing good for others
while doing good for our own.
We are secure
Since 1882, we have been committed to protecting the
financial futures of our Knights and their families. We do
this by paying claims and dividends to our insured
members. In 2010, we paid well over $442 million in
death claims and other benefits, and more than $322
million in dividends to our policyholders. Even more
impressive is the fact that in the past decade, the
Knights of Columbus paid more than $3.2 billion in
dividends to insured members.
We are stable
Prudent leadership and management has led to the rapid
growth of our assets, providing an adequate foundation
for our member’s protection, and securing our
obligations to our insured and their beneficiaries. Also,
because we are a fraternal benefit society, we have no
stockholders. Our owners are our members and we
return our good fortune in the form of dividends to our
policyholders.

The Knights of Columbus Supreme Council has reaffirmed its support of Pregnancy Centers across the United States. Pregnancy Centers provide valuable services to abortion minded and abortion vulnerable women and women in unplanned pregnancies needing assistance. Ultrasound has been proven a successful tool in saving God’s most precious preborn infants from death by abortion. In support of assisting women in choosing life, the Knights are continuing the ultrasound program that make it possible for local councils to raise one-half the cost and it will be matched by national. Many councils have been actively supporting this effort and have been successful in providing these much needed machines to pregnancy centers resulting in lives saved. Foundations of Life Pregnancy Center in Tampa is in need of a free standing ultrasound as they serve a large number of abortion minded and vulnerable clients. A used ultrasound machine has been configured to meet their needs and will be installed with a flat screen monitor providing the mother a view of her preborn baby through this window to her womb. She will hear the baby’s heartbeat and see that the baby she carries in a person, not just fetal tissue. With ultrasound 98% of the women make a choice for life - either parenting or adoption. This is a call to action for Florida State and local Knights of Columbus Councils. We need your participation to make the ultrasound machine a reality. We are asking that each council contribute. The cost of the machine is $ 24,900.00. We need to raise $12,450 and the Supreme Council will match the rest. This is a small sum to pay for a life and for all the lives that will be saved by this one machine. As Knights, we must act as our most innocent preborn infants are counting on us. We have already qualified Foundations of Life Pregnancy Center as meeting the Knights program criteria and we are committed to purchasing the ultrasound machine. Please respond by April 30 with how much your council will contribute. The quicker we act the more lives we have a chance to save. Let’s do this! Sincerely, Chris Gladu

A Knights of Columbus council can work wonders; in fact, with its many programs, it can help change the community, town, city or neighborhood in which you live. However, a successful Knights of Columbus program depends on people taking the initial idea, modifying it to suit specific situations and local needs, then implementing the program in the way it works. Each local council evaluates the needs of their community and implements those programs and activities that are most needed in their area. The Knights of Columbus Service pogram activities are designed to engage the council members in various activities across a host of categories. "The Power of One" This production is geared to help councils strengthen their rosters with active new members and develop local leaders for the Order. The production looks at a successful council and its efforts to work with other local councils to make a difference in the local parish and community. Why Participate in the Knights? Knights of Columbus like to say their membership is its own reward. It’s a way to acknowledge the fulfillment they receive from belonging to a diverse group of Catholic men whose shared principles are needed more than ever in the world today. These are the principles of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism handed down by Father McGivney and the Order’s first leaders.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
Serving Those Who Served Our military personnel voluntarily act as the protectors of our nations, standing on the front lines while keeping us safe behind them. The Knights of Columbus acknowledges this unselfish act of patriotism by promoting the “Serving Those Who Served” program. There are 26 million U.S, veterans and hundreds of thousands of men and women currently serving in the military. Meeting the needs of such a large population is the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) of the Department of Veterans Affairs, which operates more than 1,000 facilities throughout the United States, ranging from full-service hospitals to nursing homes and home-care programs. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS) Program is the vehicle that the Knights of Columbus uses in the Serving Those Who Served program. The Vice President for Fraternal Services has oversight of the VAVS program. The program is directed and managed by the Assistant for Military and Veterans Affairs who also serves as the National VAVS Representative to the VAVS National Advisory Committee (NAC). The K of C VAVS program is executed through the Fourth Degree chain of command through the U.S. Vice Supreme Masters and District Masters. Under the program, a Knight of Columbus is certified as a VAVS representative or deputy representative at a VA medical center. Our certified representatives and deputy representatives attend hospital meetings and organize efforts for K of C volunteers. The Knights of Columbus currently has VAVS representatives at almost every VA medical center (VAMC) and many clinics in the United States. There is one certified representative and, up to, three deputy representatives from the Knights of Columbus at these VAMCs. Representatives recruit and manage K of C VAVS volunteers in developing activities and programs that target the most essential needs of the patients. In the United States, the VA hospitals, clinics and facilities need all types of volunteer services – from program planning to visiting veterans. For more information on this outstanding program, please contact your Fourth Degree district master, the Voluntary Service Chief at the nearest VA Medical center, or use this form. The philosophy behind “Serving Those Who Served” is simple: the men and women of the Armed Forces didn’t let the Nation down on the battlefield, and the Knights of Columbus will not let these veterans down now. Assumption of Mary
August 15,2012 History:
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her earthly life is a defined dogma of the Catholic Church. The Feast of the Assumption, celebrated every year on August 15, is a very old feast of the Church, celebrated universally by the sixth century. It commemorates the death of Mary and her bodily assumption into Heaven, before her body could begin to decay--a foretaste of our own bodily resurrection at the end of time. Because it signifies the Blessed Virgin's passing into eternal life, it is the most important of all Marian feasts and a holy day of obligation. The feast was originally celebrated in the East, where it is known as the Feast of the Dormition, a word which means "the falling asleep." The earliest printed reference to the belief that Mary's body was assumed into Heaven dates from the fourth century, in a document entitled "The Falling Asleep of the Holy Mother of God." The document recounts, in the words of the Apostle John, to whom Christ on the Cross had entrusted the care of His mother, the death, laying in the tomb, and assumption of the Blessed Virgin. Tradition places Mary's death at Jerusalem or at Ephesus, where John was living.

NIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
Installation of Officers
Silver Rose Run Makes Stop in Tampa Bay Seffner – The Knights of Columbus will participate in a North American effort to pay tribute to Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas, by hosting a leg of the international 2012 Silver Rose Run as it travels from its origin in Virginia to the final destination at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Monterrey, Mexico on December 12, 2012. The Silver Rose Run will make a local stop at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Seffner, Florida on Thursday, August 9, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. with much fanfare. A prayer service will be held immediately following the arrival of the Silver Rose. This event is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus councils of St. Francis of Assisi, St. Stephen, Nativity and Resurrection Catholic Churches. The 2012 Silver Rose Run departs in April 2012 from New York (Eastern Route,) Virginia (Southeastern Route,) Ontario, Canada (Central Route,) and Manitoba, Canada (Western Route.) The four roses will travel simultaneously across North America and converge at Rio Grande City, Texas. They are then transferred to the Knights of Mexico for their final destination of Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Monterrey, Mexico in celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12, 2012. “We have been Blessed with a once-in-a-Lifetime opportunity to receive and host one of the Silver Roses,” said Julio Alvarez, District Deputy for the Knights of Columbus. “On this very special evening, families, friends, neighbors, Parishes and Communities representing Seffner, Brandon, Riverview, Valrico and Plant City will join together in a very special prayer service Celebrating Our Blessed Mother and dedicated to the Culture of Life. United as one Community of Faith, Hope and Love, we will be joining the millions of faithful who are making this Pilgrimage of Prayer to Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas.” The Our Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose – One Life, One Rose Program began in 1960 as a project of the Knights of Columbus to honor Mary under her title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas. In 2001 Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson expanded the program by beginning the “Running of the Rose” from the 119th Annual Meeting of the Supreme Council in Toronto. “The ‘Running of the Rose’ is a perfect program for the Knights of Columbus,” said Supreme Knight Anderson. “Through it we honor not only Our Lady of Guadalupe and express the unity of the Order, but we also reaffirm the Order’s dedication to the sanctity of human life. It is to the Blessed Mother that we turn in prayer as we work to end the Culture of Death that grips our society. As we think in terms of ‘One Life, One Rose,’ it is most appropriate that we turn to Our Lady of Guadalupe who made known her will through Juan Diego and the miracle of the roses.”

Above and Beyond: A Man Worthy of Veneration
by Dominican Father Gabriel B. O’Donnell, vice postulator
Most of us don’t use the term “venerable” on a daily basis. When Father Michael J. McGivney was given the title “Venerable Servant of God” by the Holy See in March 2008, the obvious question was raised, just what does this mean?
The long road to sainthood has certain benchmarks. The successful conclusion of the diocesan investigation into a Servant of God’s life and works is one of them. The opening of the Roman phase and the completion of the positio, the long explanatory argument presented to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in favor of a candidate’s sainthood, is another.
The bestowal of the title “Venerable” on Father McGivney marks another important step on the journey to beatification and canonization. It signals that the congregation has carefully considered the positio on Father McGivney’s life and virtue, and after consulting with historical experts and theologians, has judged it to be valid and convincing.
Once the members of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints make a positive judgment on the positio, the matter is referred to the Holy Father for his approval. His positive response makes possible the issuance of a “decree of heroic virtue” and the bestowal of the title “Venerable.”
A decree of heroic virtue indicates a pastoral judgment on the part of the Church. For the good of the Christian people, the Church recognizes that Father McGivney was a man who went beyond what is required of a good Christian. His was a life of outstanding virtue, in which he “heroically” practiced charity, humility and prudence. Father McGivney went above and beyond the ordinary call to Christian perfection much as a martyr lays down his or her life for Christ and for the Gospel.
Father McGivney’s “martyrdom” was the daily giving of his life in fidelity to the duties of a typical parish priest, in an extraordinary and selfless manner. When we recall all that he undertook in spite of his youth, inexperience and his lifelong battle with poor health, his heroism is obvious.
Toward the Heart of God
What comes next? The reported miracle presently before the congregation must be judged favorably if there is to be a beatification in which the title “Venerable” will be exchanged for “Blessed.” The positio on the reported miracle has been submitted to the Holy See and is currently under consideration. Medical and theological experts must carefully examine the evidence in order to pass judgment on the case. If judged positively by the members of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, that judgment will be passed to Pope Benedict XVI, who alone makes the decision about beatifications and canonizations.
What if our reported miracle fails the rigorous test of the congregation? We must begin again with another reported miracle. It is for this reason that reports of favors attributed to the intercession of a candidate for canonization are so important. Gratefully, in Venerable Father McGivney’s case, there are other reports of miraculous events that can be carefully considered should the current reported miracle fail to receive the positive judgment of the Church.
The technical aspects of a cause for canonization are fascinating but can sometimes distract us from the essential focus: the glory of God made manifest in the holiness of one of his servants. A cause for canonization is not meant to lead us into the intricacies of Church norms but into the heart of God and his call to holiness of life. Father McGivney’s cause, in particular, is a summons to ordinary Catholics to embrace the mystery of Christ in its fullness so each of us will see where we are called to heroic virtue. Father McGivney was an apostle of lay spirituality, and his message is intensified each time the Church recognizes his outstanding life and virtue.
