Message from the Grand Knight

January-February 2020

Knights of Columbus — St. Helen Council 11738 — Glendale, Arizona — www.kofc11738.org

Dear Brother Knights,

As I look back on 2019, it seems to have gone by so fast. We as a council have ac-complished so much in the last six months and have planned more for the next six months. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for all your efforts this year. Keep up the good works and let’s make the next six even better.

I hope all those who are helping with the raffle enjoyed the little break we had from the court-yard and are refreshed now to make the last effort push in January to reach our goal of selling all the tickets. Through the efforts of all we will be able to help the parish and other charities as well.

You may have heard or read that the Degree ceremonials are in the process of changing. We are to be introduced to them at the mid-year meeting on Jan 11. The changes will open the ceremo-ny to the public allowing family to be present and take part in the ceremony. More information will be provided after the meeting.

In January I would like as many Knights as possible to please take part in the Arizona for Life March and Rally taking place on January 18, in downtown Phoenix. As Catholics, it is our duty to support the Pro-life Movement. Also, from January 21 thru 29 the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (www.usccb.org) is promoting the 9 Days for Life Novena. I ask that all Knights participate in this novena for the protection of human life. You can register on the website www.9daysforlife.com to receive daily emails, texts, or an app that can be downloaded to your cell phone.

We will hold the Basketball Free-Throw Championship for boys and girls 9-14 on January 19. This is an annual event held by Knights Councils across the country. Please show up to cheer on the contestants and perhaps help with rebounding stray shots.

February we will conclude our Raffle by drawing the winners on February 16. We are looking at making this an exciting event for the parishioners to attend.

We completed another successful blood drive in December and have another one coming up on February 2. Thanks to all who donate and/or help with the drives.

Thanks to all who continually support our ongoing programs; the Rosary on Eugie every 3rd Sun-day, Perpetual Adoration and Bingo Kitchen every Friday, Altar servers at the 12:15 mass, and “Box Rats” at St. Matthews each month.

For those looking to get involved, opportunities exist in all these and other events in the upcom-ing months. To quote previous Grand Knight, Randy Hughes, “If anyone is bored, you’re not try-ing or helping.”

Let’s have a wonderful 2020! Vivat Jesus! George Dusold

Blood Drive

Since this upcoming Blood Drive coincides with the timing of this Newsletter, we will present a short comment about the past year and a comment about the upcoming new year.

In the year of 2019 we had 125 successful donations meaning we were able to help as many as 375 seriously ill peo-ple in our community Hospitals.

As most of you know we have five Blood Drives each year. All of our Drives are conducted at St Helen Roman Cath-olic Parish and are usually 8 to 10 weeks apart. Our upcoming drive is on Feb 2, 2020.

In your interest we would like to restate the high points of a former presentation as a reminder for the upcoming year.

We care about your comfort and well being. The day you donate blood please try to do the following

Eat a healthy, low-fat meal within two hours ahead of your donation. The day before, eat a salty snack. When you donate blood, you lose about a gram of salt. Replacing it ahead of time helps keep your blood pres-sure normal.

Hydrate by drinking 8 to 16 ounces of non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic beverages one hour before you donate. Water is a great choice.

Avoid or limit caffeinated sodas, coffee, iced tea and energy drinks on the day of donation.

Your simple, lifesaving action today can transform lives for many tomorrows. We are grateful for your generous and selfless donations.

Our next Blood Drive is at St. Helen Roman Catholic Parish on Feb 2, 2020 in classrooms 1&3. We look forward to seeing you!

Men’s Conference

The 2002 Catholic Men’s Fellowship Conference is February 1 at Xavier College Preparatory. Tickets are on sale

now. If you have never been to the Men’s conference, I would highly recommend the event. It is a daylong event

with inspiring talks by renowned catholic speakers (religious and laity), adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and

confessions will be available during the day. Lunch is provided and the conference ends with Mass with the bish-

ops. If we get enough council members to attend, this meets the qualification for the Spiritual Reflection Program

required to be eligible for the Columbian Award. Note, Carl Anderson, Knights of Columbus Supreme Knight is one

of the main speakers at this year’s conference.

Community Programs I would like to thank Paul McClellan and James Rubio for spearheading the float for the Glendale Hometown Christ-mas Parade. It was held on December 14th. I would also like to thank all the volunteers that arrived to help deco-rate the float, and participate in the parade. A fun time was had by all.

Our next project is the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest which will be held on January 19th on the Teen Center court at 2:00 in the afternoon. We will have registration the weekends of January 5th and 12th at all Masses. The day of the contest we will start setting up at 12:30, and start the sign-ins at 1:30. I want to thank the brother Knights that have volunteered to help at this time, and encourage more brothers to come and support the event as well.

I would like to remind everyone that the Parish Raffle will be back in the courtyard the final month in January. Eve-ryone please do your part to help make this Raffle successful.

Remember that no matter what endeavor our Council undertakes, we can only be successful if all brothers get in-volved in one way or another.

Thanks,

Joe Beckman

Radio Family Rosary

St. Helen Council and the Ladies of the Mystical Rose, will combine to pray the rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary on January 15th, 2020 at 6:00 pm. 2020 List of Resolutions for St. Matthew Box Rats...

Hopefully 2019 closed out well for all Box Rats and Knights.

2020 means a fresh "Vision" for all of us.

Here's a few possible resolutions for Box Rats:

1. Pray daily for all we serve 3rd Saturdays at St. Matthew (and everyday at St. Helen).

2. Better yet, pray with them after delivering a food box and asking about their other needs.

3. Consider a SVdP refresher style course in what we do and why we do it (Ozanum Formation Experience). Luis Garcia, our president at St. Matthew, is working on the logistics of an abbreviated course (maybe one Saturday AM after Box Rats).

4. Eggs and milk are always appreciated so St. Matthew Conference has more funds for rent and utilities.

5. Put a fresh, clean $20 bill from the bank in an envelope. Attach a neatly printed note to the bill that says "St. Vincent de Paul loves and cares about you" As you drive around town or are in a store or market, look for a person or family the Holy Spirit leads you to approach and give it to them with a smile.

You won't be alone. Thousands of Vincentians and others are doing this every day---a not so "random act of kind-ness" :)

Thanks for all you do to serve those most in need at St. Matthew and at St. Helen.

Vivat Jesu!

Bill Klink

My brothers in Christ,

First off I want to wish everyone a very happy and prosperous New Year. As we wel-come the new year, it is also a time to prayerfully reflect on the year that is ending. Our assembly's 2019 accomplishments are many. We can all be proud. But, now it's time to prayerfully plan and execute what will hopefully be another outstanding year. I encourage everyone to take an active role in keeping our assembly strong.

A big hearty congratulations to our Past Faithful Navigator, SK Randy Hughes and all the officers and members involved in earning the Star Assembly Award for the 2018/2019 fraternal year. Congratulations go out to SK Blair Kennedy who became the newest member of our assembly in November. Now is the time to invite our other 3rd degree brothers to take the next step and join the 4th degree. The next scheduled Exemplification of the Fourth Degree will be in Phoenix, Arizona, Saturday, 15 February 2020, hosted by San Xavier del Bac, Assembly 14. The ceremonial will be held at St. Benedict Catholic Church located at 16223 S. 48th St, Phoenix, AZ 85048. What a great opportunity to increase our membership. Of course our big event for the year is the PSA dinner which will be on April 18, 2020. Tickets will go on sale in the near future. The event is open to the public and I hope we can encourage as many people as possible to attend this wonderful event. Our next assembly meeting will be held January 22 at 7:00pm in the St. Helen's Teen Center.

Message from Your President

My Fellow Ladies of the Mystical Rose,

This letter marks the end of not only 2019 but the end and beginning of a new and exciting decade.

May this letter find all of you in good health and spirits and may the blessings of our most high con-

tinue to rain down on each and every one of you.

I want to give a huge thank you to Ann Naughton for delivering our stockings filled with goodies and

Christmas gifts to St. Matthew; the smiles on their faces were priceless. Ladies thanks again for your

selfless acts and purchase of stocking stuffers and Finley the Fox for our Kindergartners. Thank you

to our little elf (Lei’s granddaughter) for tagging along and helping Mrs. Clause deliver Christmas

cheer.

We ended 2019 with two very successful fundraising events which raised 3,800.00 combined!

These two fundraising events allowed us to sponsor a family in need this year. Doris and Mike Modic and Dennis and I deliv-

ered the food and Christmas gifts to our family. They are a blended family with 6 children. The youngest only a month old.

Mom was close to tears when we brought in all the gifts and she wanted to ensure I thanked each and every one of you for

helping her give her children a good Christmas. I have attached a few photos she sent one of the four kids that were home with

Santa and a few of the children opening their gifts.

Thank you Ann Hughes and Evelyn Balestrieri for chairing our Bread and Pie sale and to Kristene Mailloux and Ceil Dusold for

chairing our Christmas Cookie and Candy sale. This was Elizabeth Noriega’s first year as a helper during our cookie and candy

sale, I hope you enjoyed it - and will possibly chair it next year?

Ladies you continue to astound me with your baking abilities and I am so proud to be part of such a generous group of ladies.

Thank you to our parish for always supporting us so generously.

I would like to give Bill St. Armour a very special thank you for braving the stifling hot Santa suit and making sure all of our par-

ish children got to place their Christmas wish and take a free picture with Santa. We appreciate you!

Ladies, mark your calendars for our co-event with the Knights of Columbus. Radio Family Rosary will be airing our rosary prayer

live!! Armand Brooks has been handling this for us and we will pray the Rosary during our January 15th meeting. Thank you

Joanne Brooks, Anita Oas, and Ellie Hulme for volunteering to pray the rosary on the radio in representation of the ladies.

I hope my quilters were busy and were able to finish their quilts for our annual quilt raffle coming up in February. If you have

questions please reach out to Ann Naughton or Gloria Gray as they will chair the event. Thank you Rochelle Machica for volun-

teering to help. The quilts are due by Jan 1st. The Raffle dates are Jan 25 and 26th, Feb 1st and 2nd, and Feb 8th and 9th. The

winner of the raffle will be drawn after the 12 o'clock mass on February 9th.

May you all have a safe and Happy New Year and I will see everyone at our next meeting. Remember we begin by praying the

Rosary at 6pm and because this prayer is being aired live we will not be able to open the doors once we have begun so please

arrive early if you wish to be part of the rosary prayer. Our January business meeting will be held on the 15th and will begin at

7pm following the recording of the Rosary.

Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday season!

Your Humble President,

Norma Taylor
