Message from the Grand Knight

September-October 2019

Knights of Columbus — St. Helen Council 11738 — Glendale, Arizona — www.kofc11738.org

Dear Brother Knights,

We started this new fraternal year with both sadness and joy. Sadly, we said goodbye to

Brother Knight Derek Winker who passed suddenly. He will be missed greatly by those

who knew him and by all the students he spent time with in the classroom and coaching

on the field. May he enjoy eternal reward in heaven.

With joy, we celebrated the parish’s 45th and Fr John’s 25th Anniversary, with a Mass with

Bishop Olmstead. The Knights were well represented serving as ushers, altar servers, Fourth Degree honor

guards and many of the clergy present. Fr John was honored at the dinner following the Mass and he

shared his adventure of finding his way to Arizona at times impulsively following others. He truly placed

his trust in the Lord to get him here. I wish him many more years of service to others bringing them closer

to our Lord.

The Rosary on Eugie in August marked 9 years for our council praying the Rosary in front of the abortion

mill. Let us pray that there will not be a need for us to be there next year.

We had a shortage of help in the Bingo Kitchen, but some brothers stepped forward to help out and we

had some new members join us. Welcome and I hope you enjoy the fellowship that comes along with

working the kitchen. If anyone would like to help in the bingo kitchen let me or one of the team captains

know. Family members are welcome also.

We have a Blood Drive coming up on September 8. If you are able to donate, I encourage you to do so.

What is more pro-life act than giving life by donating blood?

To all First Degree Knights: On September 14 you will have the opportunity to make your Formation and

Knighthood degrees nearby at St Jerome Parish. I encourage you to take this step to full Knighthood.

The Annual Raffle starts October 12th, a little later and a little cooler. See raffle article in this issue for more

details. At the time of this writing we still need more help on the raffle teams. Each team will cover 3

masses once a month for 3 months (much easier than working Rojo).

The Soccer Challenge is coming up on October 6. SS Simon & Jude Cathedral Council #12708 is going to

join us that day for the soccer challenge. Come out and help cheer on the kids with our Brother Knights.

Lastly, we have the Hallowfest on Saturday, October 26. The Council will be selling the food and refresh-

ments. Proceeds will go to support the youth. There will be games, a Haunted House, ‘Trunk or Treat’ and

fun activities for the whole family.

God bless you for everything you do for our Council and the parish.

Vivat Jesus!

Blood Drive As a senior in high school in 2005, Amanda had big plans for her future. High school graduation and moving on to college with friends were all just months away. But in early April, she started to have nagging symptoms that would not disappear. Prolonged exhaustion and weakness, coupled with muscle and joint aches persisted. She became severely jaundiced on May 2 and was admitted to the hospital. Another series of tests led doctors to a diagnosis of Wilson’s Disease, a rare, genetic liver condition. “My disease progressed quickly,” Amanda said. “My liver had completely shut down, and doctors said I needed a transplant right away.”

Amanda received a liver transplant on May 8. She was placed in a medically-induced coma for nearly two weeks, and remained in the intensive care unit until June 20. During her surgery and recovery, Amanda needed 112 blood transfusions – 27 red blood cell, 26 platelet and 59 plasma transfusions. She returned home just before Independence Day 2005.

“Blood donors gave me the gift of life, Amanda emphasizes. “Their generosity will always be a part of who I am. As a matter of fact, they inspired me to become a nurse.” After completing her nursing degree, Amanda worked for several years in a hospital setting and then transitioned to a new role as a school nurse. Amanda and her husband Marc have two daughters and she now works as a stay-at-home mom. Our next St. Helen Roman Catholic Parish Blood Drive will be 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM on Sunday September 8, 2019 in St Helen Classrooms in 1 & 3.

Annual Fall Raffle Brothers, our fall raffle planning has started with several committee meetings so far. After much discus-sion it was decided to completely change the raffle concept from monthly roll over drawings to a new idea of all drawings being done on one day. The Roll Over raffle option is gone. Goal is to sell 1,000 raffle tickets at $ 25.00 each. Sales will start on the October 12/13 weekend. Sales will continue through the months of October and November in the courtyard. No courtyard sales in De-cember but resume sales in the courtyard in January. Ticket sales end on January 31st. Raffle ticket drawing day is Sunday February 16, 2020. Raffle tickets will be available for sale in the Parish Gift Shop and the Parish Office daily. All Brothers are encouraged to buy and sell tickets to support this fund raiser for the Parish and the Council. Courtyard sales will be done at ALL weekend Masses by 8 teams of 4 Brothers. Please sign up for a raffle team. 2 teams work each weekend, with each team only working 3 Masses, we want to split the time donated by each. Raffle tickets can be purchased by cash, check and credit card at all locations. This is a big change! Raf-fle tickets will be available for purchase via the St. Helen Parish website also. Prize fund details: With 1000 raffle tickets sold @ $ 25, prize fund will contain $ 10,000 for the drawing on Feb. 16th. 1st Prize is $ 3,000 2nd Prize is $ 2,000 3rd to 10th prizes will decrease in amounts

Safe Environment

Brothers,

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix is committed to the protection of our children and youth. To that end, all clergy, seminarians, employees and volunteers are required to be screened (application, interview and background check) and to complete annual Safe Environment Training (SET). This year, SET is now being conducted by Catholic Mutual Group. The new website can be accessed at phoe-nix.cmgconnect.org, or visit our Council website for the link.

Renewal of existing certification can be done on this website, which requires an updated background check, training video and acknowledgement of the Code of Ethics. If you need to complete the Founda-tion class, our parish will be holding a class in the near future (more details to follow). Otherwise, you can complete the training class at another location.

Once you have your up-to-date certification, please contact me via email at [email protected] so I can update our Council records. Remember, if we do not have record that your certification is current, you cannot volunteer in any capacity.

We have a lot of events coming up in the fall, so it is vital to all Brothers complete the Safe Environment Training. This takes a small time commitment from you to help ensure the protection of our youth.

Vivat Jesus!

Society of St. Vincent de Paul Back to School means cooler weather is on the way......

....and with that "cold" weather in Arizona.

So many youngsters we serve at SVdP both St. Matthew every 3rd Saturday as well as here at St. Helen need new (or gently worn) coats and sweaters.

Either myself or any Box Rat can accept these on behalf of St. Matthew or you may leave a message at the St. Helen SVdP line (623.500.3232) about a drop off of jackets, coats, or sweaters for our parishioners' and neighbors' youngsters.

These would go out with Food Boxes and be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for warming a small child on a cold day.

A Message from the Community Program Director

We are going to have the annual Soccer Challenge this year on Sunday October 6th at 2 PM. I would like to find a brother knight to chair this event and at least 4 or 5 more to help run it. We will be in the courtyard at church for 2 weekends prior to the event to sign up participants. Any brothers that would like to help put on the Soccer Challenge please contact Joe Beckman at [email protected]. I’m looking forward to your help and support for our youth.

Thanks,

Joe Beckman

Knights News September-October 2019 Page 7

My brothers in Christ,

As we say farewell to summer and welcome fall, most of our schedules begin to fill up

to the point of being overwhelmed. So, prayerfully consider helping out with as many events as

you can without sacrificing the quality family time that is essential to a well balanced life. There

is still time to invite our Third Degree brothers to join our Assembly and get them registered for

the September 28th exemplification which will be hosted by Fr. Patrick J. Murphy, Assembly 22

and held at St. Anthony Recreation Center in Casa Grande.

In September all the final preparations will be made for the 2nd annual Operation Restoring

Veteran Hope, which will be held at St. Joseph's Youth Camp October 4-6. It was this event

that earned our Assembly the "To Be A Patriot Award" last year. One way you can help is by

collecting and donating hygiene items which will be distributed at the retreat. If you have items

to donate, just let me know and I will make sure we give you a way to get them to us.

Preparations also continue for the 44th Annual Arizona Rosary Celebration which will be held

October 20th. Please consider getting involved in this Knights of Columbus sponsored event.

Our next assembly meeting will be held on September 25th at 7:00pm in the St. Helen's Teen

Center.

Message from Your President

Dear Sisters in Christ,

As we said goodbye to Summer and hello to Fall our ladies were busy with our an-

nual ice cream social and school supply drive. Both events were a huge success.

I want to give a special thank you to Ann Naughton and Chris Sieracki for ensuring

our school supply drive was a success and for making sure all schools received an

equal amount of donations.

I would also like to recognize Charlotte Pulham and Jan Golba for chairing our ice

cream social that was a very welcome event during a extremely hot summer Sunday. The ice cream was

delicious and a huge hit with our parish.

A special thank you to all of the ladies that took time out of their personal schedule and gave up time away

from family to help in both of our events.

I would like to extend a special thank you to Brianna (Lei’s granddaughter) for photographing both of our

events and for assisting Ann in delivery the school supplies to the schools.

Our parish never fails with their generosity and I am extremely thankful for all of their support. I have not

obtained the final number count for our donations but was taken aback with all the backpacks we received

this year. We are blessed to have so many generous parishioners that know the value of making sure eve-

ry student starts their school year off on the right foot.

Ladies if you were not able to help during the summer I ask that you please consider helping out with as

many upcoming events as you can. I of course am mindful that many of us cannot volunteer with every

event, however now that our group has grown I ask that new volunteers please consider assisting. We

have a lot of upcoming events now that our year begins, please review our calendar and review what

events would not interfere with quality family time as that is essential to a well balanced life.

The 44th annual Arizona Rosary Celebration which will be held October 20th. Please consider getting in-

volved in this Knights of Columbus sponsored event. Cecelia and George Dusold have graciously been

our representatives and have attended the preparation meetings. Thank you Cecil for keeping us updated.

Ladies we will have our own advertisement this year within the rosary celebration program.

Our first meeting of the year will be held on September 11, 2019 beginning with a rosary prayer at 6:00pm

in the courtyard in front of our Blessed Lady statue with social time from 6:30 to 7:00. Our meeting will

begin promptly at 7:00pm please mark your calendars and I look forward to seeing all of you.

Blessing in Christ
