pH measurement in the laband in the field

Requirements for laboratories are constantly becoming stricter. On the one hand, more and more measuring results have tobe obtained in shorter times andon the other measurement de-viations should become fewer. This also applies for pH measure-ments. The results should have at least two decimal places, bereproducible, documented and of course be prepared for furtherprocessing and archiving on aPC.

These tasks require a pH meterwhich the user can rely on andwhich also does the largest partof his work for him.

Knick set reliability and easyhandling as top priorities in thedevelopment of the Models 765and 766 laboratory pH meters. These pH meters support theuser’s work not only by proces-sing the measured values correct-ly, but also by providing an ope-rating concept which to a greatextent prevents handling errorsand systematic errors with mes-sages and intelligent routines.

The same requirements are oftenplaced on mobile measurementsin the field so that the measure-ment capabilities of portable meters are very similar to thoseof laboratory meters. Nowadays, many portable meters providethe same measurement accuracyas lab meters. In addition, themobile use generates particulardemands on handling and me-chanical characteristics, such asshape, size, robustness, tight-ness, etc.

As part of the Portamess® Series,Knick offers the portable pH meters 913 and 911 pH, whichcombine accuracy and flexibilityof a lab meter with an enclosuredesign specially developed forfield applications. In practice, the unit convinceswith a multitude of details: theprotective cover with short in-structions, the integrated quiverfor storing the electrode, the water-proof enclosure, and manymore. As an extraordinary fea-ture: Knick also offers hazardous-area variants of these units formeasurements even in Zone 0 locations.

The following article looks at the special requirements and pro-blems of pH measurement anddescribes the solutions providedby the respective Knick meters.

Problems with pH measurements

Measured value deviations (errors) cannot be avoided in any measuring task. Here, sta-tistical deviations (incidental deviations) are distinguished from systematic deviations (recurring deviations).

With pH measurements, most of the errors which are caused by the measuring equipment (pH meter and electrode) and its systematic structure should be counted as systematic devia-tions. The statistical deviationsare mainly caused by measuringequipment handling and opera-ting errors.

Systematic problemsPerfect condition of the meas-uring equipment – consisting of the pH electrode, temperatureprobe, pH meter, and also thebuffer solutions – is the basis for reliable measuring results. In practice, different influencesdo however cause changes tothe measuring equipment.

Impurities on the electrode

Besides other errors caused byimpurities, fault voltages on thereference electrode junction areparticularly frequent and influen-tial. These junction voltages canhave various causes. They can berelated to the process medium, also in particular to the pH value, and are variable. As a part of theelectrode voltage, they mostly remain unnoticed in a calibrationand are “incorporated” in the calibration. Because of their un-known origin, their dependanceon the process medium, andtheir variability, they still lead toerrors even after a calibration.

Junction voltages can only be recognized with comparativemeasurements using special solutions. They are not recogni-zed automatically. The pH meter cannot provide warnings or helpwhen there are fault voltages on the junction. Here, the userhas to rely on his own knowledge and cautionor advice. However, he can counteract the error-causing impuritieson the electrode withnumerous measures, such as cleaning, rinsing, etc.

On pH meters from Knick, Sensoface® will help you assessthe condition of the electrode. This automatic electrode moni-toring system provides the userwith information on the electro-de condition. The zero point, slope, and response time of the electrode and the calibra-tion timer are evaluated.

Three Sensoface® icons summa-rize the individual evaluations ofthese parameters.

– The electrode is in good condition.

– The electrode is stillusable, but shouldbe calibrated.

– The electrode should absolutely be checked and calibrated.

The zero, slope, and response time parameters can only be calculated during calibration, whereas the cal timer is evalu-ated during measurement. Themeter displays the evaluation ofall individual parameters in thediagnostics menu at the press ofa key.

If the Sensoface® icon does notreturn to the “good status” afteryou have taken the appropriatemeasures, for example calibra-tion, the electrode should be replaced.

Electrode wear No matter how well an electrodeis treated and cared for, it will always show signs of aging andwear at some stage. Aging andwear mainly depend on the meas-ured medium and the measuringtemperature and can affect theelectrode in different ways.

In the past, the user had to enterall calibration data in a logbookor a lab journal in order to assessthe aging process of the elec-trode. On the Model 765, the electrode statistics system storesthe zero, slope, and response time from the last three calibra-tion procedures with the respec-tive date and accompanying time. In adition, the data fromthe first calibration carried outwith the electrode on the lab pHmeter is stored. The user can use the electrode statistics to assess theperformance of the electrodeover its complete lifespan. Re-cords can be printed out for do-cumentation or the data trans-ferred to a PC.

12

Error-free status of themeter

The user does not have to assessthe general device status, onlythe calibration status. A modernlab or portable pH meter can in-form the user about the devicestatus. The meter must provideroutines which automaticallycheck all required criteria. The lab and portable meters fromKnick provide several self-testroutines which run automatical-ly at power-on. They check theoperability of the hardware aswell as the intactness of the de-vice software (firmware). The dis-play plays a special role: If, forexample, a digit segment failswithout being noticed, measuredvalues may be displayed incor-rectly. To prevent that, all displaysegments including the icons areswitched on during the displaytest. This allows an easy opticalinspection by the user. These self-monitoring features –Gaincheck® for Models 911/913and Fullcheck® for 765 Labora-tory pH Meter – ensure a relia-ble identification of device faults.Once the device self-test has been successfully concluded, theuser can assume that the meteris in full working order accordingto the tested criteria.

Frequent handling errorsA pH meter can measure accu-rately but it cannot prevent theuser from making handling er-rors. This includes errors like, for example, calibration with im-pure or spoilt buffers and alsonot calibrating the meter in time.A modern pH meter can, how-ever, help prevent handling er-rors with clear messages and astraightforward user guidance.

Calibration intervalsThe time intervals after which calibration should be carried outdepend on the measured mediumand the measuring temperatureand are based on empirical values. As a general rule, it is better tocalibrate the unit too early thantoo late. Users often forget to ca-librate the unit in time or, for ex-ample, after a shift change noone is sure when the last calibra-tion was carried out. Up to now, this problem couldonly be counteracted by applyingthe GLP recommendations (GoodLaboratory Practice). Calibrationshad to be documented in a log-book and calibration intervals had to be observed. This did not, however, guarantee that calibra-tion was carried out according tothese directions.

The cal timer on the 765 Labora-tory pH Meter and the 913 pHPortable Meter reminds the userwhen calibration is due. The timeinterval for the calibration can be preset. This interval should be sufficiently short taking the type of measured medium, themeasuring temperatures, and the qualitative requirements formeasuring results into considera-tion. Measurements in differentmedia with pH values and tempe-ratures which deviate greatlyfrom one another, for example, require shorter calibration inter-vals than measurements in mediawith similar pH values at similartemperatures. Once approx. 80 % of the set interval has ex-pired, the cal timer will switch the Sensoface® indicator from“good” to “average”. The metershould now be calibrated. Oncethe total interval has expired, theindicator is set to “poor”. Themeter should be calibrated nowat the latest.

This check reminds the user in good time when calibrationneeds to be carried out and allows him/her to concentrate fully on the actual measuringwork.

Perfect buffer solutionsOne basic requirement for correctpH measurements is using per-fect buffer solutions which havenot passed their expiry date. Here, we strongly advise the userto follow the GLP recommenda-tions and ensure that the buffersolutions used are always fresh, undiluted, and clean. Therefore, the pH electrode must never beimmersed directly in the bufferbottle. A sufficient amount ofbuffer must be filled in a cleanbeaker. Then the electrode canbe immersed in the solution.Anyone not observing these re-quirements will obtain unusablemeasurement results.

13

There is, however, a simple solu-tion also to this problem. Knicksupplies buffer solutions in dis-posable bags as accessories. Thebuffer solutions are sufficient forexactly one calibration procedureand are sealed. After calibrationthey are simply disposed of. This guarantees perfect buffersolutions.

Calibration procedure Handling errors cannot be ruledout during calibration. The usercould, for example, leave out certain steps or mix up buffers. Here as well only strict followingof the GLP recommendationscould prevent errors. This is no longer a problem withthe Calimatic®. The user is guidedsafely through the calibrationprocedure. All necessary steps areindicated. The buffers can be pla-ced in any order. The Calimatic®

automatically assigns the buffersolution being used to the bufferset in the unit, measures the res-ponse time, calculates the zeroand slope of the electrode andmakes the necessary adjust-ments. The Sensoface® icons tell the user whether calibrationwas concluded successfully orwhether it needs to be repeated.

Calibration in the ex-pected range of the measured medium

To obtain measurement resultswith lowest possible measuredvalue deviations, it is importantto know the range of the ex-pected measured values on thepH scale. The slope of the electrode is pre-sumed to be linear. In practice, however, there are deviationsfrom the straight line. These deviations become smaller if a 2-point calibration incorporates(brackets) the pH range in whichmeasurements are being taken asclose as possible. For example, ifthe measured value is expectedto be between pH 5 and pH 6,calibration should be carried outwith pH 4.01 and pH 7.00 buf-fers.

Observing the calibrationand measuring tempera-ture

A pH value is only useful if it isgiven together with the tempera-ture of the measured medium. These values form a value pair. For best results, the calibrationand measuring temperatureshould be the same. If that is not the case, the temperaturedifference must be taken intoconsideration.

The slope is then adjusted accor-dingly by the meter.

The temperature sensitivity of themeasured medium is mostly un-known and cannot be taken intoconsideration in normal labora-tory conditions. The temperaturesensitivity of the buffer solutionsis known however and must betaken into consideration duringcalibration. The pH values for thedifferent temperatures used tohave to be read off the buffercontainers.

The temperature sensitivities ofseven commonly used buffer setsare stored in the lab and portablemeters from Knick. The calibra-tion temperature is calculated automatically or can be enteredmanually. The correct buffer val-ue for the temperature is thusautomatically taken over duringcalibration. The requirement forthis is of course that the buffersolutions are in perfect condition.

Documentation dutySince the introduction of ISO9000 at the latest it has been necessary not only to ensure per-fect condition of the measuringequipment but to also documentthis. This is also stipulated by GLPdirectives.

Any documentation is time con-suming and incurs costs. To keepthese to a minimum for the user, the units with interface (765 Laboratory pH Meter and 913 (X)pH portable meter) provide re-cords of the last calibration, thedevice diagnostics, and the con-figuration. When a printer isconnected, these records can beprinted out at the push of a but-ton. If the unit is provided withthe electrode statistics option, the last three calibration proce-dures and the first calibration ofthe electrode can be displayedand printed out. The data can beread out via the RS 232 interfaceand processed further on a PC.

With the portable meters, youoften have to take many meas-urements in the field, which mustbe carefully documented. TheModel 913 (X) pH provides a storage for up to 100 measuredvalues with date and time. Backin the lab, these data can be readout on a PC or directly docu-mented with a printer. For thispurpose, Knick offers a matrixprinter for standard paper. Thisensures that the measured valuesremain legible for years since ble-aching thermal paper printoutsdo not satisfy the documentationrequirements in the most cases.

Conclusion The increasing requirements forlaboratories also burden the usermore and more and increase thenumber of tasks he has. This results in less time being left towork on the actual measuringtask. Knick supports the user with ela-borate and practical solutions inits lab and portable units. Manyfeatures are provided to ensureaccurate measurements conform-ing to GLP: Sensoface® providesinformation on the electrode status, the electrode statisticsshow the aging process of the electrode, Fullcheck® and Gain-check® check the meter, the caltimer monitors calibration inter-vals, the Calimatic® ensures thatcalibration is carried out correctlyand the record function providesthe necessary documentation. Using this kind of pH meter sim-plifies the user’s measuring taskssubstantially.

Knick pH meters do not changethe pH measurement and also do not make it completely free of deviations which in any case is physically impossible. But theymake pH measurement safer, easier, and comprehensible forthe user and with their consistentdesign concept, they help to pre-vent errors.

This design philosophy focusingon quality, accuracy, and easyhandling has also been imple-mented in the development ofthe conductivity and dissolvedoxygen meters from Knick. Theuser interfaces of these devicesare similar to those of the pHmeters and therefore as easy tohandle. With its high-quality lab and portable meters, Knick decisivelycontributes to making liquid ana-lysis more controlled and morereliable in laboratories as well asin the field.

Quality assurance doesnot stop at your lab

door.

To make reliable pHmeasurements easierthan ever, Knick hasequipped the Model765 Laboratory pHMeter with an exem-plary package of safety functions.

Fullcheck®

automatically checksthe device functionsduring power-on. Also during operation,a complete instrument

check can be carried out at asingle keystroke. Here, also dis-play and keypad are checked besides the electrical character-istics.

Record printouts

With record printouts of the device self-test, the calibration, and the parameter settings, it ispossible (as part of quality man-agement to ISO 9000 and GLP)to document the serviceabilityand the regular maintenance and calibration of the unit.

Sensoface®

checks the electrode and pro-vides information on the elec-trode condition. The zero, slope, response time, and glass imped-ance of the electrode as well asthe calibration interval are evaluated.

Calimatic®

automatically recognizes theright buffer. It allows calibrationat the stroke of a key, providingease of use and – above all – safety. You simply immerse the elec-trode in two buffers of the selected set, no matter whichone you take first, and press thecal key. The meter automaticallyrecognizes the buffer and cali-brates itself. It does not matterwhich buffer solution is takenfirst.

Trueline®

delivers a calibrated analog re-corder signal, of course electri-cally isolated. This provides you with a true pH signal, calibrated for the electrode and without disturb-ing quantizing levels, permittingundistorted recording of pH curves.

Sockets

Robust gold plated sockets arestandard equipment.

EMC

EMC design protects the meterfrom electromagnetic interfer-ences, ensuring reliable meas-urement results even under unfavorable conditions.

Numerous practical features allow comfortable and safe pH measurement.

Temperature compensa-tion manual or automatic

Temperature compensation is either automatic with Pt 100or Pt 1000 temperature probesor manual, as selected.

Standard RS 232 interfaceVia the standard RS 232 inter-face your data can be imme-diately processed by a com-puter. Even direct output to a printer is no problem.

Displaymatic® for easierreadingDisplaymatic® facilitates readout. If the measured signal changesrapidly, the running charactersare blanked in order to allow easy reading. This allows you to read the currently measuredvalue without problems.

Easy-to read LED displayfor two measured valuesThe large, bright LED displayallows simultaneous readout oftwo measured values, such as pH and temperature. LED dis-play for alphanumeric charactersallows.

Double insulation pro-vides electrical safety inwet locationsThe well-designed enclosure hasproved successful in practicaluse. A waterproof membranekeyboard and drain grooves pro-tect the meter from moisture. The robust, stainless steel covered enclosure resists evenstrong mechanical stress.

Fullcheck® device self-test _________________________________________________________________________________

For the self test, the electrode is automatically switched off and theinput internally connected to the recorder output over a 100 MOhmresistor.

The microcontroller sends definedvoltage steps to the recorder out-put. These are measured with theinput amplifier and the A/D con-verter and compared with a highlyaccurate reference voltage. The 100 MOhm resistor at the sametime serves as reference for the im-pedance measuring circuit, whichthus is tested as well.

This means, a complete test of thesignal path is implemented with apH meter for the first time. In addi-tion, all memories, the display, andthe keypad are tested.

72

Laboratory Meters

The Laboratory pH Meterwith uncompromising ease of use.

The 766 Laboratory pH Meter is designed for standard applica-tions in everyday lab routines. Itcombines practical functionalityand easy operation with compre-hensive safety functions.

Gaincheck®

Gaincheck® performs a completeinstrument check. At a keystroke,it not only checks electrical char-acteristics, but also display andkeypad. At power-on, a shortcheck automatically tests devicefunctions. This ensures the de-vice operability, as part of qualitymanagement to ISO 9000 andGLP.

Sensoface®

checks the electrode and pro-vides information on the elec-trode condition. Zero point, slope, response time, and glassimpedance of the electrode areevaluated.

Trueline®

delivers a calibrated analog recorder signal, of course elec-trically isolated. This provides youwith a true pH signal, calibratedfor the electrode and without disturbing quantizing levels, per-mitting undistorted recording ofpH curves.

Calimatic®

automatically recognizes theright buffer. It allows calibrationat the stroke of a key, providingease of use and – above all – safety. You simply immerse the elec-trode in two buffers of the se-lected set, no matter which oneyou take first, and press the calkey. The meter automatically recognizes the buffer and cali-brates itself. It does not matterwhich buffer solution is takenfirst.

EMC

EMC design protects the meterfrom electromagnetic interfer-ences, ensuring reliable measure-ment results even under unfa-vorable conditions.

pH/ORP measurement

Easy operation with fivekeys

Even with its comprehensive safety functions, the Model 766remains easy to operate. Just fivekeys give access to all functionsyou require for easy and preciseroutine measurements.

Temperature compensationmanual or automatic

Temperature is automaticallycompensated. A pH/Pt 1000 electrode detects the tempera-ture and the Model 766 auto-matically calculates it into themeasured value. Of course, youcan also measure the tempera-ture using a separate sensor orenter it manually.

Easy-to-read LED displayfor pH and temperature

The large, bright 14-segmentLED display for alphanumericcharacters allows simultaneousreadout of pH/mV and tempera-ture.

Safe and robust enclosure

The well-designed enclosure has proved successful in practicaluse. A waterproof membranekeyboard and drain grooves pro-tect the meter from moisture. The robust, stainless steel covered enclosure resists even strong mechanical stress.

Attachable stand Besides the immersion stirrer, the attachable stand can hold three ZU 6954sensors of any kind. The adjustable stops prevent damage of sensor and beaker glass. Time-consuming adjustment during sample changehas been eliminated. An integrated cable duct does away with the “spaghetti cables” on your benchtop. For immersion stirrer and three sensors. Laboratory Meters

The requirements for labmeasurements becomestricter every day. Qualityassurance and measure-ment documentation in accordance with GLP are a must in many areas.

With its numerous safety func-tions and record printouts at keystroke, the 703 LaboratoryConductivity Meter considerablysimplifies this work for you.

Fullcheck®

automatically checks the devicefunctions during power-on. Alsoduring operation, a complete instrument check can be carriedout at a single keystroke. Here, also display and keypad arechecked besides the electricalcharacteristics.

Record printouts

With record printouts of the device self-test, the calibration, and the parameter settings, it ispossible (as part of quality mana-gement to ISO 9000 and GLP) todocument the operability and theregular maintenance and calibra-tion of the meter.

Sensoface®

Sensoface® monitors the sensorand measuring equipment andprovides information on sensorselection and handling. It reportsclock memory loss and requestsregular checks in accordancewith GLP.

Calibration

Unknown cell constants can easily be determined with a standard calibration. The meterautomatically takes the TC of the calibration solution into consideration, calculates the cell constant and displays it. Ofcourse, a known cell constantcan also be entered directly.

Analog output

The galvanic isolation of the recorder output prevents themeasured values from being influenced by the connected peripherals. Measurement continues unimpaired.

EMC

EMC design protects the meterfrom electromagnetic interfer-ences, ensuring reliable measure-ment results even under unfa-vorable conditions. This makes the Model 703 thefirst laboratory conductivity meter that completely fulfills the EMC recommendations ofNAMUR.

The Model 703 offers a wide range of practical features to meetthe numerous requirements ofeveryday measuring tasks.

Automatic switchover to 4-electrode or 2-electrodeoperation

With the Model 703 you can use either 4-electrode or 2-elec-trode sensors. The measuringinput is automatically switchedto the appropriate operating mode.

Temperature compensa-tion manual or automaticTemperature compensation takes place either automatical-ly with Pt 1000/NTC 30 kOhm temperature probes or manually.

Standard RS 232 interfaceVia the standard RS 232 inter-face your data can be immedi-ately processed by a computer.Even direct output to a printer is no problem.

GLP records at the press of a keyRecords of the parameter setting, calibration, and device diagnos-tics can be output directly to aprinter. This provides you withcomprehensive GLP-compatibledocumentation at the press of a key.

Automatic adjustment of display rangeThe meter automatically selectsthe display range with the greatest possible resolution. Of course, the desired displayrange can also be specified manually.

Easy-to read LED displayfor two measured valuesThe large, bright LED displayallows simultaneous readout of two measured values, such

as conductivity and temperature. The 14-segment display canshow alphanumeric characters.

Double insulation provideselectrical safety in wet locationsThe well-designed enclosure hasproved successful in practicaluse. A waterproof membranekeyboard and drain grooves pro-tect the meter from moisture. The robust, stainless steel covered enclosure resists evenstrong mechanical stress.

Fullcheck® device self-test _________________________________________________________________________________

For the self test the sensor is auto-matically switched off and the inputswitched over to a reference resistor. The conductivity measuring circuit is automatically checked internally. The microcontroller sends definedvoltage steps to the recorder out-put. These are measured with theA/D converter and compared with a highly accurate reference voltage.

This means, a complete test of thesignal path is implemented with aconductivity meter for the first time.In addition, all memories, the dis-play, and the keypad are tested.

sensors of any kind. The adjustable stops prevent damage of sensor and beaker glass. Time-consuming adjustment during sample changes has been eliminated. An integrated cable duct does away with the“spaghetti cables” on your benchtop. For ZU 6955 immersion stirrer and three sensors, directly connected to the meter.

–––––––––––––––––––––––– l–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––Immersion stirrer The immersion stirrer reduces sensor response time for measure- ZU 6955

ment and calibration. Precision measurements to DIN 19268 evenrequire stirring. To prevent splattering of test liquid, the stirrerautomatically stops as the carriage moves up. The stirrer is supplied via the ZU 6956 plug-in power pack.
