Musings from the EditorDearly Beloved in Jesus,
In November we celebrated ‘All Saints’ Day’. And this year our celebration was even more special. Why??! On November 4th Sister Rani Maria was beatified as Blessed Rani Maria!! Getting to know the saints is a very good way of getting to know God. Take some time to read about the saints. You will definitely be amazed and they will lead you closer to Jesus.
In the Bible, Jesus has many names that identify His character. One of those names is Emmanuel, which means “God with us.” Before Jesus came to earth, people had to go through all kinds of rituals to become clean enough to go near to Him. But, when God sent His Son for us, He is the one who cleanses us and makes His home in our hearts.
This Christmas let’s thank Him for choosing to make His home in each of our hearts. Isn’t it good to know that God is always with us? God wants to know our sorrows and brokenness. God knows our hopes, dreams and prayers for our own selves and for the world. So, the next time you feel alone, think about this.
Remember that He is near, because you serve Emmanuel—the God who is always with you!
He will NEVER leave you or forsake you!
This Christmas may your hearts be warmed by selfless acts of charity, goodwill, and service to others, even as the Lord “did not come to be served, but to serve.” (Matthew. 20:28). May all your charitable deeds done in secret be rewarded openly by the Lord blessing you with an inner sense of peace and joy!

Each time you pray your list probably goes like this… ‘Oh God, ...please take care of
my husband…my children…give good health to my parents, bless my brother and sister abundantly….my relatives….and so goes the big list….my…my...and so on.
Most of us in Bangalore, don’t even know who stays next door. I feel this situation is an apt opportunity for us in this city to pray for the people unknown to us. This inspiration is drawn from St. Mother Theresa of Kolkota whose entire life was spent for the people unknown to her.
We don’t have to go that far. If we can take some time off WhatsApp, Facebook, and other social media to which we are glued (as though it is our oxygen mask!!)….and look outside into the streets....from the windows of our vehicles as we join the rat race in the morning. Sometimes, we come across beggars who may be handicapped, elderly people, eunuchs and also children trained to sell toys, pens etc at the traffic signal. We try hard to avoid eye contact with them. There ends the matter. Even the noise of the speeding ambulance has become a daily routine for us.
If you could just recite one Hail Mary in your mind as an ambulance passes by, for the patient suffering inside…or the unknown people we pass by everyday, you will start feeling the difference. Even if you don’t want to give money give a smile. There is no greater icebreaker than a smile. Trust me, you will feel hesitant initially ...’why am I doing this?’.....but as you go on with this habit, it will become a apart of you.
Each day morning we are filled with negativity as soon as we start reading the newspaper. The other day, I was reading the newspaper when I read that a three year old boy named Lakshay had injured his finger in school, underwent an operation and fell into a vegetative state. This piece of news kept coming to mind whenever I
prayed. Slowly, I started praying for this little boy not knowing who he is. The only thing on my mind was that may God give his parents the strength to deal with this incident. I kept track of this news and one day to my surprise I got to read that the boy is gradually getting back to normal. This was a moment of great joy for me.
If you are a keen investor in the stock market how cleverly you will diversify your portfolio to be safe during extreme market risks???! Likewise, as a true Christian if you really want to hold the hand of Jesus on the day you are eternally risen from death, remember to diversify your prayers for as many people you can. For it is easy to love the people you know rather than the people who are strangers to you. And God will not ask you “what did you do for yourself?” but, “ what did you do for others?”
Don’t wait for the magic to happen from God above. Each time you pray for others, God is showering his abundant grace upon you. Take few seconds out of your busy schedule to feel the love of God!

November 4th 2017 will go down in the history of the Syro Malabar church as a day of extraordinary blessing. It is on this day that a daughter of this church,
Sr. Rani Maria, was elevated to the status of ‘Blessed’. In 2003, her journey of beatification started and in 2007 she was conferred by the title of Servant of God.
Rani Maria was born on January 29, 1954, as the second of seven children of Paily and Eliswa Vattalil at Pulluvazhy, a small village near Kochi, Kerala.
She joined Franciscan Clarist Convent at Kidangoor near Palai in 1972 and made her first profession on May 1, 1974. She began her mission in northern India in Bijnore in 1975 and then came to Udainagar in 1992.
Throughout her life, Sister Rani Maria worked tirelessly to help the villagers - mostly poor tribal - to obtain financial credit and other forms of economic support. She worked tirelessly to help this often oppressed sector of society.
The nun was 41 when Samandar Singh, hired by some landlords, stabbed her inside a bus on February 25, 1995. She died on the roadside at Nachanbore Hill, near Indore.
Behind prison walls, Samandar began plotting how he could take revenge against the man who pushed him to kill the nun. But he also received a visit from another nun, Sister Selmi Paul, who happened to be the murdered nun’s own sister. She hugged him and called him brother. He was profoundly touched by it, so much so that from this embrace his journey of repentance began. He gave up plans for revenge and accepted the sorrow caused by the murder. Eventually, Samandar was released because of a petition
signed by Sister Rani’s family, the provincial of the Clarist congregation and the bishop of Indore. He now leads an exemplary life in his village in central India after serving his life term. He helps tribalpeople and for him Sister Rani’s family has become his own.
“I regularly visit her tomb,” Samandar Singh said. “For me, it is like a sanctuary of peace and strength.” “I want everyone to know that Christians work to make India great. He now says, “Christians are India’s hope.”
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because He has anointed me to preach the Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord (Lk.4: 18)”. This Gospel verse was the motto of Sr. Rani Maria, who wrote it down in her personal recording.
Impelled by the love of God, she never tired of serving others. “She was courageous enough to confront others for their wrong doing and immature dealings”and “she showed courage to speak out openly”. Sr. Rani Maria had a special enthusiasm to call on the name of Jesus and pray among the people of other faith. She encouraged all to proclaim the name of Jesus courageously everywhere. At the same time, she was tolerant of the people of other religions. In their turn they showed respect and love towards her.
As she was an evangelizer in her life she continues the proclamation even after death in many ways. Sr.Rani Maria died as a martyr shedding her blood for the emancipation of women and for the uplift of the poor and oppressed and exploited people. She is certainly the first martyr to be beatified in India.
In moments of crises and difficulties, Blessed Rani Maria’s life is an inspiration and encouragement.

Christmas Tidbits!! The word 'Christmas' comes from old English, the Mass of Christ or Christ's Mass. Even the word 'holiday' is derived from the phrase 'Holy Day'.
Santa Claus IS St. Nicholas (4th Century Bishop of Myra--modern day Turkey). St. Nick went around throwing coins into the homes of poor people at Christmas. Bishop Nicholas would toss coins through windows into the homes of people in need. Legend says that some coins bounced into the stockings a family had drying by the fireplace, the basis of the modern custom of hanging stockings by the mantle for Santa to fill.
Candy canes are shaped as shepherd's staffs, because Jesus is the Good Shepherd. They are traditional red and white striped, the white symbolizing the purity of Jesus, the sacrificial lamb. The red symbolizing the blood the Lamb shed for our sins. And the candy cane upside down looks like the letter 'J' for Jesus. And too, the stripes call to mind the prophecy of Isaiah “by His stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5).
The Holly bush used for wreaths is a thorny bush, marking the crown of thorns He wore during His Passion. The red berries of the holly represent the drops of His blood.
The Christmas tree is an evergreen, to remind us of God's everlasting love. The star on top of the tree symbolizes the star of Bethlehem.
Bethlehem in English means "House of Bread" "I am the Bread of Life. He who comes to me will never go hungry". (John 6:35) "Take this Bread and eat it, It IS my body..." (Mark 14:22)
The Manger, Christ's first crib, was a lamb's feed box
"I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world." (John 6:51) So, the living Bread was delivered to the House of bread in a food dish for His sheep to eat.

It is proper to use 'X-mas' as an abbreviation. The practice goes back to the early monks’ writings. The X is really the Greek Letter Chi (pronounced kie) which was the symbol for Christ--the 1st letter of 'Christos'.
The Origin of the Twelve Days of Christmas You're all familiar with the Christmas song, "The Twelve Days of Christmas" ! To most it's a delightful nonsense rhyme set to music. But it had a quite serious purpose when it was written.
Catholics in England during the period 1558 to 1829, when Parliament finally emancipated Catholics in England, were prohibited from ANY practice of their faith by law - private OR public. It was a crime to BE a Catholic."The Twelve Days of Christmas" was written in England as one of the "Catechism songs" to help young Catholics learn the tenets of their faith - a memory aid, when to be caught with anything in *writing* indicating adherence to the Catholic faith could not only get you imprisoned, it could get you hanged.
The songs gifts are hidden meanings to the teachings of the faith.
The "true love" mentioned in the song doesn't refer to an earthly suitor, it refers to God Himself.
The "me" who receives the presents refers to every baptized person.
The partridge in a pear tree is Jesus Christ, the Son of God. In the song, Christ is symbolically presented as a mother partridge which feigns injury to decoy predators from her helpless nestlings, much in memory of the expression of Christ's sadness over the fate of Jerusalem: "Jerusalem! Jerusalem! How often would I have sheltered thee under my wings, as a hen does her chicks, but thou wouldst not have it so…"
The other symbols mean the following: 1 Partridge in a Pear Tree = Jesus Christ, Son of God 2 Turtle Doves = The Old and New Testaments

“4THIRTEENS” – the Catechism Retreat conducted from Sep 29th – Oct 1st was a great success. The presence and support of all the students, teachers and parents made this event a blessed one. Through the blessing of our Almighty God and the intercession to Our Lady, our catechism teachers conducted the retreat for the first time for the LP Section students, which made the students and the parents very happy.The session for UP was led by Br. Sunil Mahajan and Team and HS & HSS was led by the Jesus Youth Team. The children actively participated in the retreat and testimonies and we received a good feedback from the parents too. We thank the PTA Council members and all the parents for their support through different ways towards the success of the retreat. As the tagline of the retreat says, “I can do all things through him who strengthens me” (Phil. 4:13), we would move forward with Jesus through all the difficulties and happiness in the journey of our life.Mission Sunday was on Oct 15th, with the active participation of the students and the teachers. There were different stalls arranged by our students for games, food and this time, students performed street plays to showcase the mission activities. The students and the teachers had put in all efforts to contribute towards the mission. It was a blessing for the Catechism students to have an interactive session with Fr. Tom Uzhunnalil SDB on Nov 22nd. Fr. Tom shared his experience with the students and as a token of our gratitude and love and as a remembrance
a sapling was handed over to be blessed by Fr. Tom and to be planted in our church as the “Tree of Faith”.The First Semester Exam was conducted on Nov 5th for all the students from Std. 1 – 12 from 11 am to 1 pm. The students prepared and were seen writing the exam with utmost seriousness.The class wise PTA meeting for all the sections have been completed. The feedback and suggestions provided by the parents have been noted. Sincere thanks to all the parents for taking responsibility towards the faith formation of their children.The LCA team is playing an important role in grooming the children for the mega event Bible Kalotsavam. Fr. Cyriac our Vicar, Fr. Benny, our Director and the Catechism core team did witness a few practice sessions and shared their inputs.

Hearty congratulations to St. Thomas Youth for actively participating and winning in the various art-cultural competitions organised by the youth associations in Bangalore under the Syro Malabar Youth Movement - Mandya diocese, and also for actively being part of the church activities.
XPOSANTSE ‘17Anepalya St. Sebastian’s church youth conducted XPOSANTSE ’17 for which our St. Thomas Youth won first for Pookalam and third for Thiruvathira. Jerin James won the first prize for painting.
EKPHRASIS’17Holy Family Church, Hongasandra conducted EKPHRASIS’17- theatre fest. St Thomas youth put up a wonderful Street play voicing our stand against abortion which was very effective thus bagging the first place. Anjal Augustine won first and Jerin James won the third prizes respectively for monoact. Our mime team won the third place. Our efforts to be a part of mannequin challenge about the much-talked Blue whale issue didn’t go unnoticed as well. All these achievements led us to bag the Overall runners-up cup.

Deloitte India) for the J, S & Y groupsOn 19th August, the STARTTites had a very useful and relevant session on “Being Safe on the Internet” by Mr. Sebastian Edassery .The session started with a brief introduction to Internet and associated challenges in controlling the outward movement of confidential data and inward movement of malware on which a user has hardly any control. Challenges posed by criminals operating under assumed identities and risks of believing and acting on the communications received online, were emphasized through multiple case studies. By stressing on the legal provisions against some of the current trends like cyber bullying, use of Social networking platforms without reasonable security practices etc, youth were cautioned about chances of getting into conflicts with law. Different case studies and examples were provided to highlight the necessity for exercising control on installing certain apps and use of illegal tools for downloading copyrighted or banned contents. The concept of “Think before you post” was well articulated with a case study on how a post today can jeopardize a person’s career in future. The speaker also demonstrated a method for creating secure passwords which can be easily recollected as well. Before concluding the session, there was an engaging Q&A session where the expert answered the many queries of the STARTTites.He also updated students on the various career prospects in the field of ‘Cyber Security and Analysis’ such as Data Analytics, Forensic Analytics, Cyber Forensics, etc.
Apart from this, we had the regular sessions including the Current Affairs Quiz, Word Power, Logical Reasoning, Group Dynamics etc.

CONGREGATION OF SAMARITAN SISTERS
The Congregation of Samaritan Sisters was founded as a diocesan congregation of the Syro - Malabar rite by
Rt. Rev. Msgr. Paul Chittilapilly, the then Vicar General of Trichur diocese on 25 January 1961.
The chief patron of our congregation is Our Lady of Annunciation, who submitted herself totally to the will of God. Other patronesses are St. Theresa of Child Jesus, who is the perfect model of interiority and patronesses of the missionaries; and St. Veronica, who served Jesus heroically.
Founder: Msgr. Paul Chittilapilly, the founder of the Congregation of Samaritan Sisters was a zealous priest, who dedicated his entire life for the service of the downtrodden especially those affected with leprosy. He was adorned with deep faith in the providence of God and tenacity of purpose. He was richly imbued with mercy towards the poor and the sick especially the lepers. Simplicity of life and hard work was his life style. Maximum for Jesus and minimum for Paul was his motto which was quite evident in his life.
Charism, Apostolate, SpiritualityThe charism of the congregation is to experience the compassionate love of God through ceaseless practice of the presence of God and loving communication with God and share this love through loving service with all those in need, the poor, the sick, especially the lepers. Our charism totally integrates the prayer spirit of Mary and service mindedness of Martha (cfr.Lk.10:38-42). The special Spirit of our congregation is mercy toward the people suffering physically, mentally and spiritually. As Jesus said, “Be merciful even as your heavenly father is merciful" (Lk.6:36) the aim of all our apostolic activities is the holistic liberation of humanity.
Motto: To the question of the young man in the gospel, who is my neighbor, Jesus narrates the parable of the Good Samaritan and says to the young man "Go and do likewise" (Lk.10 37) this is the motto of the congregation, to be the channel of the compassionate love of Jesus.
Major Areas and Ministries: The Congregation of Samaritan Sisters that began with the special charism of ministering to the lepers has outgrown into other areas of
ministry of medical and social care of the less privileged. Our mission is to share the love and compassion of Jesus with anyone in need through the service of mercy with the attitude of the Good Samaritan.Besides leprosy hospitals and mobile clinics, general hospitals, home for the Aged and Destitute, hostels for women, Social Centers, Schools for the mentally and physically challenged children, Rehabilitation Centers, HIV/AIDS Centers, Day Care Center, School & College of Nursing, Kindergartens,Service in Educational Institutions, were established.
Present Status and Statistics:Now the Congregation is organized in two provinces, SNEHODAYA and SNEHARAM with its headquarters in Thrissur and Samlong (Ranchi) respectively.The Congregation has got two Formation centers - One in South India -Trichur Archdiocese and the other in North India - Ranchi Archdiocese. Now we have a total number of 417 professed sisters and 93 candidates under formation the members were engaged in various socio - medical apostolic services around27 dioceses in India and aboard in the states of Kerala, Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, U.P. Telengana,Abroard Munster, Aachen Pavia and Sardinia. Through 65 branch houses bearing witness to the compassionate love of Jesus to the suffering humanity. The generalate of the congregation is at Mannuthy, Trichur,archdiocese, Kerala.
Udayabhavan, Samaritan study houseUdayabhavan Samaritan study house is situated at Lalgi Nagar, Bangalore. The house was blessed on 08 December 1998. It serves as residence of our student sisters at Bangalore and provides hostel facility to the girls who are coming for higher studies at Bangalore. We have accommodation facilities for 40 students.
