Obituary of Earl Davis Klock Died Feb. 27, 1918

Newspaper and Date of Printing Unknown

The uncertainty of life at any age was most forcefully impressed on our community last week when the death of Earl D. Klock was announced, who passed on while yet only 27 years old and in the early and vigerous period of manhood. Mr. Klock had been at work only a few days previous to his death, which occurred at his residence at Cadiz on February 27th. The principal cause being given by the physicians as appendicitis and it was soon discovered that Mr. Klock possessed a weak heart and could not withstand an operation and in these circumstances the disease soon did the deadly work.

Earl Davis Klock was the second son of Perry A. and Nellie Skinner Klock, and was born Nov 30, 1880 at the family homestead at Cadiz, and where his parents still reside, and has spent his entire life in our community. He was educated at old Ten Broeck Academy and has aside from assisting his father more or less upon the farm, found his principle employment with the Franklinville Canning Cop., where he has been a faithful and valued employee. Mr. Clock was married on February 3, 1910, to Miss Augusta Hahn of Buffalo, who survives him as well as the parents above mentioned, and one brother Floyd Klock of Cadiz.

"Early" as we all knew him leaves behind him in addition to his immediate family, a host of sorrowing and sincere friends. He was one of those quiet generous and large hearted men, whom the world always likes and loves and with whom it reluctantly bids adieu, especially in the "noon day" of life.

The funeral was held at his residence on March 2, the Rev. L. A. Davis officiating, and the large attendance manifested the sorrow of the community at his early demise and the sympathy they desired to extend to the widow, the aged parents, and the brother. A large delegation of his fellow employees of the Canning Co. were present in a body (sic) and those from out of town in attendance were Charles Hahn, West Dale, NY, Frank Hahn and Wm. Hahn of Buffalo. Mr. and Mrs. Knecht of Buffalo, Mrs. A. N. Hotchkiss, and daughter, of DuBois, Pa. Interment in Mount Prospect.

Additional Information: Earl Davis Klock (Perry A.Klock, Jacob Klock, Jacob Clock, Jacob Conrad Clock, Conrad Clock, Hendrick Klock) was born November 30, 1880 and died February 27, 1918 which would have made him 37, not 27 as stated above.

"A GOOD WOMAN FALLEN ASLEEP”

Elizabeth Jones was born in the town of Scriba, Oswego Co., eighty‐nine years ago, July 29th. Nearly seventy years ago, she was united in marriage with Simeon Klock, who died sixteen years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Klock moved to this village about fifty years ago. Early in life Mrs. Klock became a member of the Congregational church and was always happy in the privilege of attending the church services. She was devoted to her home and made it a joy spot for her husband and children. She had exceptional qualities in the accomplishment of sustaining friendships. To know her was to love her and it was her great delight to reciprocate kindness shown by her friends. Though she had come so near the four score and ten almost a score of years beyond the alloted time, she bore those years gracefully, and kept an attitude towards life which many much younger would envy. A little over a week before she departed, she suffered the sad experience of having her only son, Arthur, taken by death. She was eager to do for him in his last sickness and did all she could. She leaves three daughters, Mrs. Louis J. Clark, and Miss Adaline S. Klock in her home circle of this village and Mrs. William G. Scott, of Pittsburgh, Pa., all of whom were with her when she fell into the rest and sleep for which she was fully prepared and into which she was not afraid to enter. The funeral was held from the home, corner of Bridge and Church streets, Saturday at two o'clock, Rev. H.A. Lawrence, pastor of the Congregational Church, officiating. Friends coming to attend the funeral were Mrs. Eleanor Turner, of Scriba, a sister of Mrs. Klock and the last surviving member of the family from which Mrs. Klock sprang; her son‐in‐law, Mr. Wm. G. Scott, of Pittsburgh, Pa., Mr. C. Edward Jones of Albany; Mr and Mrs. Sumner Jillette, Mr. and Mrs. Irving Avery, Maysell Markham, of Syracuse, Mrs. Isaac Poole, Mr and Mrs. Ernest Markham of Lysander; Mr and Mrs Henry Alexander and Mrs. Frances Alexander of Fulton; and Mrs. Florence Norris of Oswego."

Obituary of Fred D. Klock 10/14/1914

YOUTH DROWNS IN RIVER AT FORT PLAIN Fred D. Klock Met His Death While in the Employ of Barge Canal Contractors.

Fred D. Klock, aged 17 years, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lipe Klock of Averill street of this village, met his death by drowning Saturday in the Mohawk river at Fort Plain. Young Klock was employed on the day force of the Barge canal work by F. Pearson & Son, Inc. on dredge No. 2, that is located about one mile east of the river bridge at Fort Plain. He worked as a deck hand and placed the ranges on the river bank which was about 15 feet from the dredge, making the trip to the shore in a rowboat. As one range had toppled partly over he was instructed to return to the shore and set it.

A few moments later, Christopher Flander, cranesman, noticed that this had not been done and that the boat which he had used in making the first trip to the shore was fastened to a coal scow near the dredge, and it was evident that he had not made the second trip. No one saw the young man again or witnessed the accident.

The captain, Jerry Bodena, became alarmed and instigated a search for him. Mr. Flander first discovered a Prince Albert tobacco can floating by the row boat. When he touched it, it sank in the water and later with a pike pole he fished a cap out of the water, which was Klock’s.

The whistles blew and summoned men from all the other dredges in the vicinity to assist in the search. The body was recovered about one hour later. In the meantime Dr. J. C. Jackson of Fort Plain had been summoned. All efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. Dr. W.N. Simons, coroner of St. Johnsville was notified and the body was taken to the undertaking rooms of D. C. Schiffer in this village and from there to his home. Fred was a young man generally liked among the community. He was formerly employed in the Don market and his cheerful disposition won the favor of their patronage. His strongest ambition was to enter the service of the U. S. Navy. Two years ago last February Mr. and Mrs. Klock lost an older son, his death being presumably as a result from an injury received while employed as an engineer. Besides the parents he is survived by three brothers, William, Walter, and John Klock, also three sisters, Mrs. Clinton Shaut, Mrs. Benjamin Fusmer and Miss Catherine Klock, all of St. Johnsville. The funeral was held from his home on Tuesday at 1 o’clock in the afternoon. Rev. H. W. McCrone, officiating. The bearers were Frank Don, Alexander Don, Nellis Shaver and L.J. Shaver, Interment was made in Prospect View Cemetery. Additional Information: Fred Danial Klock (Lipe Klock, Amos Klock, Adam I. Klock, John J. Klock, Johannes I.
