Coerine Hattingh(18): It mightsound like thewords of a dream-er but I honestlywish to help thepeople of mycountry to livetheir lives as hap-py as possible. The poor, the old,the blind, everychild and every soul who has the right tolive, should live it with the comfort and joythat those, who rule this nation, can provide. If I was president for a day, I would at leastgive my people one day out of 365 wherethey could be free of their sorrows.

Daniël du Pre(18): If I werepresident fora day, I wouldinvest all themoney intospace traveland free en-ergy.

MoniqueScheepers(16): If I werepresident, Iwould like tohelp lower thecrime rate andwould want tohelp the peo-ple to work to-gether to over-come issues in the community. One of thebiggest challenges in South Africa is lackof education. If we could work to educateour people, other problems such as HIV/AIDS would be easier to deal with.

Talitha vd Heever(18): We believethere is equality, but personally Idon’t think manypeople understandthe concept. It istime to put thepeople that haveeverything in life, in the shoes of the poor. Those that look down upon the poor, canfeel how worn down the soles are, and howwater drowns the little, cold feet in the win-ter. Time to step up and realise what equalitymeans.

Vandie inwonershet letterlik alles verloor.

Voorwaar ’n hartseer dag in Kleinmond.

Van vroeg af was hy,soos sy volksgenote, omvattend uitgeleweraandieonpeilbaarheidvandienoodlotsoosvergestalt indienukkeengrillevandiewit-man.

Recently I have been watching differentsegments of a lifestyle programme.

What is fascinating about these episodesis the obsession people have about theirbodiesand theway they look. Inmost casesit is the perception of how we would liketo appear to the others and how we thinkthe world sees us.

People go to extraordinary lengths tocorrect their conceptions of their imper-fections.

Advertising also accounts for much ofwhat we deem to be the embodiment ofbeauty.

I remember when people used skin-lightening creams and hair-straightenerswith gay abandon, often resulting in se-vere damage to skin and hair.

My son, with his usual brutal honesty, would tell his mother that her bum lookedtoo big in a certain dress, or that his sistershould clean her face if she didn’t want tohave more spots. I suppose it is a learningcurve, and that he will soon realise thatdiplomacy goes a long way in reassuringpeople about their insecurities.

At one of the dinners I attended, one ofthe male guests asked a reluctant womanher age. When we are trying to keep the

advancing years at bay with fitness andbeauty regimes, the last thing we need re-minding of is the visible sight of mortality.

A friend and I were standing outside arestaurant inHermanuswhenwemetano-ther friend who immediately commentedon how much weight the other had gained.

What I found strange was that it was themost important conversationopener.Whydo we not first ask about the health or suc-cess of a person – the children, the latestbook you have written, or your new musi-cal direction? There are so many impor-tant things that make a person besides thekilos they have gained.

It reminds me of a social gatheringwherepeoplewere franticallynetworking. The first question people would ask woulddealwithwhatonedidforaliving.Doctors, lawyers, bankers or generally professio-nals obviously ranked higher than a hair-dresser, carpenter or office assistant.

Lord forbid you were unemployed. Yourstatus determined how long they wouldspeak to you, or whether you were worthyof their time and company.

It is the value we give to ourselves thatdefines how the world see us. The pleasingcharacteristic I have encountered in some

of the people in Betty’s Bay is the self-esteem and confidence exuded by theirlaid-back and casual nature.

They wear their age well, and the lackof cosmetic products or beauty salons inthe area does not deter their naturalbeauty. Personally, I find intelligence andkindness sexy.

Westernisation brought notions of beau-ty to other parts of the globe, and in Africawehavemastered importing the ideal .Butbig, small, tall, thin, large, dark, fair, straight or kinky, the world appreciatesand loves them all.

Our oceans thank youOur oceans thank youOnemoment itwaspouringwithrainand thenextjust a slight drizzle; then the clouds openedupandthe rain poured down again, the icy wind seemedto enter through every open space and freeze yourexposed skin. This did not stop a few enthusiasticsupporters from joining our International WorldOceans Day, Friday 8 June.

Eco Schools planned a march from LaerskoolKleinmond to the lagoon to raise awarenessamongst the people of Kleinmond about the plightof our oceans, such as pollution, over-fishing andglobal warming. Eco Schools coordinators EstelleSchuurman and Jo Peschen met with children, parents and teachers from Pringle House, Klein-mondPrimêrandBetty’sBayHomeschool,aswellas Eunice Jurgens from Harold Porter NationalBotanical Gardens.

The children presented pledges in the form offantastic little posters. They promised things like:“I will not litter near our Ocean,” and, “I will onlyeat fish from the Sassi Green List.” It was lovelyto see how aware our kids are and help them intheir desire to make a difference! Thank you, eachand every one who made an effort to support thiswonderful day. Special thanks to the Traffic De-partment and municipality for being there, readyto escort us for the march. Although it disruptedour plans, we are very thankful for the rain.

We trust we’ll see you all again next year.LOUISE FICK, Hangklip–Kleinmond Tourism Bureau

Now’s the best time to collect red baitMOST boating activities were curtailedby the inclement weather experiencedduring the past weekend.

The South League boat competition heldfrom Kleinbaai was also called off due to theweather. The few catches reported by shoreanglers were dismal, with only a few dassieand galjoen reported from the Betty’s Bay ar-ea.

Now that the cold weather has really setin, most shore anglers will all be targetingwinter fish like galjoen, dassie and whitesteenbras.

One blessing from the rough seas is theplentiful supply of red bait pods lying on thebeaches, washed ashore after being brokenoff the rocks in the stormy weather.

There were many anglers – rock, surf andboat alike – combing the beaches during theweekend and replenishing their red baitstocks for winter fishing.

Some anglers collect the baitin thepods, whileotherscut thepods open and store the bait inbuckets. With the slight push-ing tide, many clusters of redbaitpodscanberetrievedintheshallows.

The most-sought after redbait is the sand red bait, whichis often pushed ashore withcoarse pods of rock red bait atStrandfontein beach and Ma-cassar.

Thissandredbait isa lighter-coloured red bait; it has an or-ange–yellowish colour.

It is also softer than the otherred bait, and is easier to tie onto smallerhooks, such as the 1/0s used for galjoen.

The same bait matures sooner than rockor mountain red bait. Galjoen are partial tothe red, soft and stringy bait when it’s smelly

and mature.While dassie, wildeperd and

musselcracker also like rottenbait, they prefer firmer, freshbait.

This is also the time of the sea-son to fish with fresh white mus-sel, if it is available.

When fishing in the Betty’sBayandKleinmondarea, aswellas all along the Hermanus coast-line, pudding or shale worm alsogivesbetter results, but it is verydifficult to obtain this so called“wonder-worm” when the tidesare quite low at spring tide.

One often receives requestsfrom new anglers in the area for a detailedmap showing all the well-known fishingspots.

I always try to help by explaining a fewspots, but land up explaining that there is on-

ly one way to get to know the area – and thatis by experience.

The best way to obtain experience of theseareas is by joining a club.

I incidentally asked my son Barend howhewouldreply toanewfishermanin theareawanting to know the ins and outs of fishingaround these areas. He said he should firstget the correct tackle, and then pay schoolfees like everybody else!

A newcomer to our angling shores men-tioned that he found the local anglers werereluctant to give away their secrets and hotspots.

My advice is to keep on fishing, and trystealing ideas, techniques and what baits touse – fish with your eyes without annoyingthe anglers.
