Funding obtained

I designed, applied for, and was granted a 3-year Helmholtz Postdoctoral Research Project (PD-201:

Cenozoic West Antarctic Ice Sheet Dynamics), funded with € 300,000.00 (May 2015 – August 2019;

including parental leave). I was the principal investigator of this project and supervised Master and

Bachelor students as well as student assistants.

In 2012 I have been chosen by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for their RISE-

Program (www.daad.de/rise/en) in order to offer young British or North American students a research

internship at a German scientific institute. Caroline Templeton from Florida, USA, was selected and

supervised by me from May, 29th until August, 3rd 2012 and participated actively in lab work and

discussing current research.

I extensively reach out to the general public for communicating polar research and the significance of

the Antarctic continent and the Southern Ocean. This already resulted in about 20 public talks in a

variety of settings such as Elementary Schools, High Schools (Gymnasien and Gesamtschulen), Lions

Clubs, Landfrauen Vereine, Kinder-Unis, public science centers, the Überseemuseum Bremen,

congregations, etc. I am also frequently covered by various media outlets. National (amongst others):

ZDF, ARD, NDR, Deutschlandfunk und Deutschland Funk Kultur, Radio Bremen 1 & 2, Sat.1,
