KIWANIS – “TERRIFIC KIDS AWARDS”

Kiwanis is a volunteer, charitable worldwide organisation known for supporting and encouraging children to achieve their personal best. Mr

Steven Green, representing Kiwanis, presented Awards to the following students at Assembly last week for Term One, 2019.

Prep Level – Chloe Zeng - Chloe has had a brilliant start to her schooling. She is a kind, caring and friendly student who looks after and

involves all of her peers. Chloe completes all tasks to an excellent standard. The quality of her work is outstanding. Chloe is a responsible and reliable member of her class and we look forward to the wonderful things that she will achieve in her time at Burwood Heights Primary

School.

Junior School – Lucas Spilios – Lucas is a hardworking and responsible student. He consistently makes good choices

throughout the day and he encourages those around him to do the same.

Lucas shows initiative in his learning and he is always on task when he is working independently or in small groups. Lucas fol-

lows instructions and his work is always well presented.

Middle School – Tiya Chenthuran -Tiya is a highly motivated and conscientious student, who is committed to all areas of her school life. She approaches her class work with a positive attitude and gives everything her very best. Tiya treats others with kindness and respect, and

is always willing to help her teachers and peers.

Senior School – Gwen Mander - Gwen is a caring and responsible student who always completes activities to a high standard. She is very creative and is willing to help others when needed. Gwen asks questions, sharing ideas of her curious and inquisitive mind. She reflects on

her learning and strives to achieve her best at all times. Well done, Gwen.

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME

Tomorrow, 10th May staff will be undertaking an in-depth guide to all aspects of student learning in the context of the Primary Years Programme (PYP) of the International Bacculaureate (IB). An international presenter will lead staff through “Making the PYP happen. A curriculum framework for interna-tional primary education.”

2020 KINDERGARTEN AND PREP ENROLMENTS

It is that time of year when schools are commencing preparation for the following year and student numbers are critical to the school’s staffing structure. For many of you it must seem very early in the year, but for schools it is imperative that we have knowledge of numbers for staffing and other resources. I would ask you to please complete the required Student Admission Enrolment Form if you intend enrolling your child at Burwood Heights Primary School and Kindergarten in 2020. This form is available from the main office or on the school’s website. It can be forwarded by mail if requested.

SECONDARY SCHOOL PLACEMENT – 2020

I know that many parents have visited secondary government and non-government schools already, in prepara-tion for their child/children transitioning to Year Seven in 2020.

The state-wide placement timeline and procedures are as follows for those students wishing to enter a govern-ment school in 2020: -

Information regarding secondary education and Application for Enrolment (Year Seven) forms has been dis-tributed to Year Six students.

These forms are to be returned to Burwood Heights Primary School by Friday 17th May, 2019.

We will then submit all initial placement requests (first preferences) to the secondary school.

We will notify parents of the results of the placements applications, in writing, on 7th August 2019.

Parents/Carers may commence lodging non-placement appeals for secondary schools on 9th August

Orientation Day will be conducted on 11thDecember for Year Six students.

Now in its 20th year, National Walk Safely to School Day

(WSTSD) is an annual event when all Primary School

children will be encouraged to walk to and from school

safely. It is a community event seeking to promote road

safety, health, public transport and the environment.

We encourage parents and carers to walk to and from

school with their primary-aged children on Friday 17th

May. There will also be some teachers walking from

‘walking-stations’ to join in the fun.

If you live too far away from school to walk the whole

way, you could park at least 1km away and walk to

school together.

Feel free to walk with the teachers who will be

positioned around the nearby streets and will be

walking to school at 8:30am.

Students can wait at these walking-stations at

8:30am and wait with their parents/guardians until

the teacher is present.

TALENT SHOW On Friday 3rd May 2019, BHPS held a Talent Show for the weekly House Spirit Com-

petition. We would like to give a big congratulations to all of the participants in the

show. There was a wonderful assortment of dancing, singing, ukulele playing, and

mimicry. We are very lucky at Burwood Heights to have so many students with amazing talent.

CROSS COUNTRY

On Friday 5th April 2019, BHPS held their annual School Cross Country

Competition. The weather was sunny, the grounds were in peak condition

and the students were excited to commence their two-three kilometre run

around the school. The staff would like to congratulate all of the students

on their enthusiasm and perseverance to achieve their very best. Special

mention should be given to all of the parents who helped cheer the

students on and direct the students safely around the course.

Grade Five - Dance Stars Competition

Congratulations to the Grade Five students who competed at the Dance Stars Competition on Sat-

urday 4th May, 2019. All the students confidently performed their own choreography, which many

groups started working on in Term Four last year. Students who achieved first or second in their

section will join our Grade Six finalists to compete in the Dance Stars Grand final on Saturday 15th

June, 2019. A special mention to Angie and Austria for dealing with change only the night before

and achieving 3rd in the Duo section.

Spotlight On…

3/4S!

Over the past six weeks, Middle School students have

been exploring the topic of Indigenous communities

within their Unit of Inquiry study. They have had the op-

portunity to explore the Aboriginal culture, in particular

their art. Students have produced a piece of artwork

representing the Aboriginal culture.

CAMPS, SPORTS AND EXCURSIONS FUND (CSEF).

The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) programme helps eligible parents to ensure that all students are able to partici-

pate in school trips and sporting activities.

Families holding a valid means-tested concession card are eligible to apply. A special consideration category also exists.

A payment of $125.00 for eligible primary school students is paid directly to the school to be used towards camps, sports and

excursion costs for the benefit of the student.

Victorian government school Prep and Year Seven students who are CSEF recipients are also automatically eligible for a uniform

package through State Schools’ Relief.

Before School Supervision

The school yard is supervised in the mornings between 8.35am and 8.50am and in the afternoon between 3.30pm and 3.45pm.

Lunch Orders

For lunch orders on a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, we use Classroom Cuisine.

Orders must be placed before 8:30am and ordered online at www.classroomcuisine.com.au.

For lunch orders on a Tuesday, we use Subway. Orders must be placed by the Thursday prior. Envelopes are

at the office. Correct change only.

UNIFORM SHOP

The Uniform Shop is now situated in the Multi-purpose Room of the E.Wood Centre.

It will be open on Thursdays from 8:30 – 9:30am and 2.30pm – 3.45pm.

Orders can be handed in to the office at any time. Please note: payment must be made prior to uniform being given.
