Weve been assured and do believe that Choir will beready for our high school bySeptember 2011, and weare going to do everythingwe absolutely can to makesure this happens. Hugethanks and respect to all of the KIPP NYC staff, stu-dents, and parents for thecollective spirit and charac-ter that is going to make thisall possible. The last 15years have proved to us

over and over again, thatwhen it comes to schoolswho you are with is alwaysmore important than whereyou are located. As we say,As a team and family, wewill either find a way ormake one.

    Dear KIPP NYC Families,

We hope all is well. It wasso great seeing so many of you at report card meetingsthis week. Between RegentsExams and trips to Chinaand Puerto Rico, this is sureto be an exciting Spring atKIPP NYC College PrepHigh School.

Im writing today to pro-vide you with a brief updateon our search for a perma-nent home for our highschool. As you may know,we are excited about thepossibility of Choir Acad-emy being the permanenthome for KIPP NYC Col-lege Prep. Choir Academyis located on 127th andMadison Avenue in Harlem. As soon as we have the finaldates for the CEC hearingand the PEP vote, we will

be sure to get it to everyoneso that the entire KIPPNYC team and family canturn out to show our sup-

port.As weve spoken about atour parent meetings, forChoir to be the type of per-manent facility our highschool needs, it is going torequire a years worth of renovations. As a result, for the 2010-11 schoolyear, KIPP NYC CollegePrep will co-locate withKIPP Academy Elementary

School in our brand new building in Mott HavenVillage in the Bronx (right behind KIPP Academy). We did an exhaustive searchfor alternatives and this is by far and away the bestoption available to us. This building is easily accessible by the 2, 4, 5, B, and D

    AMBITIONUNIT WITH MACBETH BEING THE

    FOCUS BEGINS ON MONDAYAPRIL26TH.

From the end of March intoApril, students explored thesystems of the human body. From understanding the pur-poses of the ever-present gal-lop of our heart beat to thereasons why we feel sleepyafter a big meal, the studentsare learning how our own bodies are filled with real-lifeapplications of the principlesof science we have studied allyear long. Many studentshave been taking advantage of opportunities to re-take quiz-zes until they understand theunderlying concepts they test.

These students have takenownership of their grades, ahabit that will serve themwell as we approach the endof the year and in futureclasses. We will be workingthrough two more units be-fore we begin our review forthe Regents examination onthe afternoon of June 16th.The first is a survey of themost important principle in biology: evolution. We will be observing the remarkablediversity of organisms onEarth to understand hownatural selection and

evolution led them to developcharacteristics that allowedthem to survive in their envi-ronments. In the final unit,we will be studying ecology--the relationship of organismswith each other and their en-vironment. Much of this unitwill be focused on under-standing the complex waysthat humans interact with thenatural world and affect thefuture of the planet.

This month, students of theVisual Arts Authentic Connec-tions Program designed bro-chures in an effort to persuadereaders to explore extreme en-vironments--some as subtle asan iceberg and others as bafflingas a parallel universe. Throughthis work, students found joy inusing art as the medium throughwhich they could explore theseenvironments.

Students set out on this journeywith the intention of illuminat-ing the mystique of these habi-tats. The criteria was simple-- be silly, but factual. Ultimately, the drive and passion studentsput into designing their bro-

chures transformed this pro- ject into a competitive pro-duction.

There is no doubt these bro-chures will provide to anyreader a sense of humor andmomentary escape--take one!

just finished a unit on Sub-Saharan AfricaNext we will be moving east to studyEast and Central Asia; this unit will endin mid-May. For our last unit of studywe will be moving back west to focus onthe Renaissance and Reformation. Weare looking forward to a strong finish forall of our students.

From Mr. Hanna: In April we have been studying the

history and geography of Africa.Students learned about the em-pires in west Africa that were builton the gold-salt trade; as well asabout the civilizations of Nubia,Ethiopia, and the Swahili coast.Every student created a topog-raphical map of the continent andtook their unit assessment.

One of the tasks students wererequired to complete this unit wasto write a poem from the per-spective of a person living in oneof the climate and vegetationzones of Africa and interactingwith the environment.

Examples of summer opportunities: Summer Youth Employment Program: Paid job opportunities for students.Approximately 15 percent of students that apply will get jobs through this pro-gram (there is a shortage of openings). Students can apply online and must have

working papers before they start the job (they do not need working papers toapply)

YMCA Camps:Offers multiple sports and activity camps throughout New YorkCity and also sleepaway programs. Cost varies depending on family income andfinancial aid is available. Applications are available online or students can ask Ms.DeSario for more information.

Hartwick College Music Festival: One or two week music programs forstrings, brass, percussion, or wind instruments at SUNY Oneonta. Cost is $800per week but financial aid is available.

Active Jacs Basketball Camp: Three day basketball camp at City College. This camp is for both boys and girls and costs $275 but discounts are available.

Teen Acting Shakespeare Program: Three-week intensive acting program inManhattan. Teacher recommendations are necessary for full scholarships.

Chelsea Piers Urban Adventure Camp: Active day camp in Manhattan.Involves rock-climbing, kayaking, and other activities. Two-week program costs$575 but financial aid is available.

Students have been learning about varioussummer opportunities through advisoryclasses. We want all students to apply to two

different summer programs (this can includecamps, internships, jobs, or study programs)so they can have a rewarding summerexperience. By applying to more than oneprogram, students are giving themselvesoptions and setting themselves up for successthis summer. You can review the packet of summer programs that was given to studentson the KIPP NYC CP Website. Please notethat this packet was given to students earlierthis month so some deadlines have passed.

Many students have had questions about thecost of the programs and about fundingoptions. All students were given a summeropportunities grant application where theycan write a short essay to apply for fundingthrough KIPP. We are committed toworking with students, families, theprograms, and KIPP to ensure that everystudent has access to a quality summerprogram. The grant application can be foundon the KIPP NYC CP website and is dueFriday, May 14.If you have anyquestions about summer programs, working papers, or applications, please contact Ms. DeSario [email protected] or call516.658.4167.
