The faces say it all!

The Cast and Crew

Kingston Literacy & Skills has been extremely fortunate to have the kind of steadfast support it’s had from the community over the last 19 years. It takes a small army of volunteers to run this event. Here are just some of the folks who play key roles in the Bee, many of whom have helped us out for years!

Col. Stephen Cadden: Honorary

Chair

Jim Elyot: Master of

Ceremonies

Carl Richards: Master

Pronouncer

This was Jim’s 14th year as Master of Ceremonies! How lucky are we to have him. He keeps the Bee humming along — on track and on time, and with his own brand of bee-musing humour. We grately appreciate Jim’s continued support. Keep on buzzing Jim!

We welcomed our new Honorary Chair—Colonel Stephen Cadden — into the hive. His enthusiasm for the Bee and his passion for literacy was a bee-utiful thing!

The Judges

Tanis Fairley (retired school principal and current social justice activist), Rob Mooy (Kingston This Week), and Lisa Ray (KROCK) and are all seasoned veterans of the Bee and were back again this year. They make sure teams don’t miss any letters and make the final decision on correct spellings. Thank you Tanis, Rob, and Lisa for all your help.

This year, Lisa Ray, one of our long-time judges, spread her wings and took on the role of Chair. She really created a BUZZ at the Bee, and we are very happy and grateful to have her as “Queen Bee”.

Lisa Ray: Chair

Carl Richards, of KIX 93.5 and 102.7 The Lake, lent his best radio voice to the Bee this year and did an outstanding job of it. Welcome Carl! Hope you had as much fun as we did!

...And Committee … A large part of why this event is so successful is that the volunteer committee that has organized it has been incredibly dedicated, hardworking and creative. While some might content themselves with a successful event, and leave each detail as it was the previous year, this committee consistently seeks out new elements, and works hard to make sure it is always fresh. While some faces have changed over the years, consistent traits of most committee members are their dedication, originality and great sense of humour.

Where would we Bee without our terrific volunteers? Many wonderful people helped us out on the night of the Bee, and we would have been lost without them. Here are just a few...

… And Volunteers Too ...

The Grate Groan-Up Spelling Bee Committee are dedicated folks who know how to work hard and

have fun at the same time. If you are interested in being a part of this committee, please give Cheryl or Allison a call at 613.547.2012. We are always on the

look out for new workers and drones!

The Last Word

While the Bee is a wonderful event, and tons of fun, it does serve a couple of very important purposes. First, it helps to raise critical funds for our Family Literacy programs, which receive no government funding for their ongoing operations. These programs support and encourage the development of reading in families, especially in high-risk areas. The 2013 Bee raised over $22,000 for these programs, and for that we are truly grateful. The Bee also helps to increase public awareness about Kingston Literacy & Skills, and literacy issues in general. The more people who know about both, the better.

Thank you for your interest in both the Bee and Kingston Literacy & Skills!
