FROM THE PRINCIPAL

It has been a big year and while there have been challenges; the good that has been achieved for children and young people is immeasurable overall.

The last few weeks without exception have been very busy but very productive. Last week we ran Possibilities Expo, Monday –Wednesday. Head Start for our 2018 Year 12 students started and continued this week. We also has our annual Presentation Night last Friday where we farewelled our 2017 Year 12 students and celebrated outstanding student achievement in a wide variety of academic, community, sporting and artistic endeavours.

I was really excited that Possibilities Expo was greeted with such enthusiasm by students and staff involved. I know it was a big demand as everyone is tired at this time of the year but I wanted students to be thinking and creating and not wasting a moment of their valuable school time. Students rose to the challenge of activities at the start of the week. They worked in cross age teams to achieve simple STEM activities. The activities were not important but the concept was to demonstrate that we don’t get to choose who we work with in the real world, we have to value all ideas and work to achieve a common goal in a short time frame. Students then did a skill builder activity on the Tuesday and worked on a design brief on the Wednesday. They produced some amazing products and some teams have continuing work into 2018. I hope with the support of community, staff and students we can make this an annual event.

The input and enthusiasm at last week’s Presentation night was fantastic and I thank our guest speaker, Mrs Kristen Wilks for such an inspiring speech. Everyone involved was very professional. The organisation and decorations were

fantastic. It was a great celebration of what we have achieved in 2017 and I am convinced more than ever that our visions of creating connected, powerful learners will continue to provide the best opportunities for our children, however this being said, there is still much more improvement to be gained and I am very much looking forward to 2018. I thank all students, families and invited guests for their attendance and participation on the night. Our SRC President and Vice President Emily Pedlar and Tahlia Troeth did a wonderful job of compering and the evening ran smoothly. Well done to everyone involved and a special thanks to Barry Medwell for steering the Presentation Night committee.

Our Year 12 students have had a great start for 2018 and are very focussed for the year ahead. The commitment and dedication by all staff to the students of this school is evident by their willingness to take extra classes, prepare new courses and come in when on leave.

I would like to farewell and thank Jane Price, Stacey Daniel and Stephen English for the quality teaching they have provided here at school and we wish them well as they take up new opportunities in 2018. With endings come new beginnings and it is with great pleasure I announce Nicolette Rehn (Science/Biology) will join our team for 2018.

I am very proud to be Principal of Kingston Community School and I thank my staff, students and local community for your ongoing support. Please have a great and well deserved break, spend time with your families, be kind to yourself and others, be safe and recharge the batteries.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART JUMP OFF FUNDRAISING DAY

On Wednesday 1st November, the Year 6/7 students participated in the Heart Foundation’s Jump Rope for Heart Jump Off Fundraiser, raising much needed funds for research and development into the causes of and treatments for, cardiovascular disease.

Students spent the week leading up to the event fundraising within their own families and friends networks or online through setting up their own fundraising page. Students then spent the afternoon on the Jump Off day skipping and completing various skill stations set up in the gym. Our school’s Jump Rope Team performed a routine they have worked on this year. The Year 5’s came up to join in the fun as a precursor to some of them going on to be in our Jump Rope Team in 2018.

Much fun was had by all but most importantly, our students raised vital funds to support the cause. A total of $1308.72 was raised, $1026.72 of which was raised by Year 6 student Jaynie Moore on her online fundraising page. A fantastic achievement making her the highest online fundraiser in South Australia for 2017.

Thank you to all who supported the annual fundraiser and we look forward to continued support in years to come.
