FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Kingston Community School has received $4 million in the “Building Better Schools “program to refurbish and redevelop learning facilities. This will include a combination of new buildings and major refurbishments beginning in 2018. This is on top of the $3.5M STEM redevelopment that is planned to start late 2017. Other schools in the South East that received funding are Grant High School – $7m, Mount Gambier High School – $6m, Naracoorte High School – $5m and Reidy Park Primary School – $5m. This is a very exciting time for Kingston Community School and will provide great opportunities for current and future students.

We acknowledged our Year 12 students last Friday at a farewell assembly. The students are currently preparing for exams that start next Monday. The school community wishes them every success as they strive to achieve their personal goals. My message to them was that results do not define a person’s character and to find a way to achieve their dreams even if they don’t quite achieve what they want this time. I hope they are very proud that they attended Kingston Community School because we are very proud of them. The relationships that are developed over many years at this school are very strong and a testament to them and their teachers.

In our Site Improvement work over the last term and this term we have been focusing on behaviour as part of our action plan work on student and community engagement and creating powerful learners. Students have been surveyed to find out about bullying and safety and how student behaviour affects their wellbeing. As a staff we understand that an effective whole school approach to behaviour management hinges on having respectful relationships with all stakeholders and processes and procedures that are well-communicated to staff, students and families. As a school community we are working to have a simple plan that is known and followed by all for consistency. It is important that we establish high, school expectations that are taught and consistently reinforced.

While there is no quick fix for the difficulties any school faces with the behaviour of some students, most of the issues can be mitigated by having a positive whole school behaviour management approach. It is about putting most of our efforts into positive, proactive strategies and having a solid foundation so that all students have the opportunity to learn in a safe supportive environment.

Students, staff and Governing Council have reviewed our school values to see if they need to change and this has been a good process to re-establish a common understanding of the values. Staff continually refer to our school values and unpack them so students know what these look like in the classroom, around the school and in the community.

It is vital that Kingston Community School has a positive culture that promotes a sense of connectedness. School connection is the belief by students that adults in the school care about their learning as well as about them as individuals. It is important the school and community share high expectations for both academic and student behaviour and we support students in need.

It is also important that students develop resilience as this enables students to cope with adversity, change and helps them to become more independent. While it is hard to sit back and watch our children struggle it is often through failure that real growth is made.

The work we have been doing on a whole school approach to behaviour was based on the feedback from last year’s parent, staff and student survey’s. It is now time once more to ask you to complete the Kingston Community School Parent/ Caregiver opinion survey for 2017. Please take some time and complete the survey for 2017 as I value your feedback. It provides important information that supports and informs our work at the school. It helps staff to identify what is working well and what areas may need further development.

I would also like to promote the “Possibilities Expo” which will be held in Week 8, Monday 4 December – Wednesday 6 December. The POSSIBILITIES expo is an immersive program designed for students in years 7 – 10. Staff and students and volunteers will work in teams to solve problems where hands on experimentation, critical thinking and collaboration are encouraged and used to engage and inspire students about future pathways and possibilities in STEM fields. I am still looking for people who would be willing to help run a skills session on the Tuesday. If you have any skills in macramé or jewellery making I would be grateful of the support for our students. The last day the students will be able to use some of the skills they develop on the Tuesday to run with a design brief. It is not about completing something but the thinking and designing and perhaps prototyping that is important. For those of us wo have been around long enough, it has a “Community School Week “feel but is very intentional and specific in its focus on critical thinking not just doing. Stay tuned for a program of activities.

I hope everyone has had a smooth start to the term. I’m really looking forward to some warmer weather so we can start using the pool without freezing!

Best WishesLucretia Tocaciu

2017 INTERNATIONAL PEDAL PRIX

Kingston Community School once again entered an Under 16 Boys and Under 16 Girls team in the 24-hour endurance race held at Sturt Reserve, Murray Bridge on 21-24 September. The team consisted of 25 members.

The Under 16 Boys team consisted of David East, Mathew Andrews, Will Wiseman, Will Watts, Xabian Martin, Thomas Barker, Bradley Mackereth, Harrison Barker, Fletcher Murdock, Chris Burdon, Jack Hartman, George Dutton, Ethan Cornish, Kane Daniel and Jack Harding.

The U16 Girls team consisted of Simone Schenke, Montana Summers, Emilee McInness, Jessica Holmes, Arabella Ross, Britney Drabsch, Kate Falkner-Hunt, Halle Carter, Sophie Kokiousis and Lucy Smith.

This year’s race start was postponed due to extreme winds that posed a risk to riders with debris being blown around the track. This meant our starting riders of Emilee McInnes and Harrison Barker were left waiting and had to deal with their nerves for even longer.

The U16 Boys team performed strongly and it was great to see the experienced riders mentoring the new boys and a change of guard occurring. The boys finished 8th in their category and 52nd overall out of 200 other vehicles. The team completed 342 laps totalling 581km.

The U16 Girls had 10 members and all riders were willing to put their hand up when it was their turn to ride. This continued to the end of the race where all team members were willing to ride until the end and amazingly this effort and attitude saw them performing personal best lap times in the final race hours. The girls finished 6th in the ‘all girls’ category, 36th in the U16 category and 128th overall out of 200 other vehicles. The team completed 261 laps totalling 444km.

This year’s results were difficult to compare with past results due to race time being restricted to 18.5 hrs, however, the results achieved were outstanding.

It was fantastic to see so much parental support in important roles such as cooking, radio communication, vehicle repair, timing, cooking, marshalling and team support/morale boosting. This was a major contributing factor to this year’s success and thankyou to everyone for that. A special thank you to Barry Medwell, Karen Watson, Lesley Rankin and Toc for their efforts and support.

A big thank you to our all our sponsors.

Well done on a fantastic effort in 2017.

YEAR 12 TAPAS NIGHT

For their final assignment the Year 12 Food & Hospitality class hosted a Tapas night in the last week of Term 3. The students invited eight guests, who enjoyed an eight course tapas menu. Tapas are traditionally small Spanish savoury dishes typically served with drinks at a bar, however recently the trend has evolved into an entire and often sophisticated cuisine. The students worked throughout the day to prepare every component of the dishes including breads, sauces, chutney, sorbet and churros. The event was a great opportunity for the class to collaboratively demonstrate their skills in the kitchen and practice production of dishes on a larger scale. Overall it was a successful night, thank you to the guests who attended and the students for their hard work.

The following was the Spanish themed menu:

Trio of Dips with fresh pita breadStuffed Mushrooms with feta and spinach Spanish Pork Skewers with garlic herb dipLamb and Goats Fetta on ciabattaPear and Manchego SaladClassic Vanilla Flan with caramel and banana,Zesty Lemon Sorbet, Spanish Churros with a strawberry and chocolate orange dipping sauce

FESTIVAL CHOIR - A SINGING SENSATION!Our choir performed at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre last Friday for the South East Primary Schools’ Music Festival. All students performed confidently on stage and enjoyed the unique experience. Congratulations to the following students for their special roles during the concert: Bonnie Clarke in Dance Troupe performing all 4 nights, Alice Drabsch compering, Sheba Miller performing a solo for 2 nights and Jorja Mules performing a solo. They were all well prepared and performed their part with confidence.

“I wouldn’t change anything because I tried my personal best and got everything ‘down pat’ by Friday!” – Bonnie Clarke“After the performance I felt a bit sad because I enjoyed singing and it was awesome!” – Skye Martin“During the performance I felt nervous and then I felt better after the first song.” – Renae Steele“During the performance I felt happy to be there, singing my heart out.” – Dorothy Miller“My favourite song was ‘It Feels Good to Sing a Song’ because it feels good to sing a song.” – Max Bawden“The first word I sang when I stepped out onto the stage for my solo was my most memorable moment.” – Jorja Mules“My favourite song was ‘Celebration’ because there was confetti.” – Jade Longbottom“After the performance I felt relieved, excited and tired.” – Aliandra Parker“A memorable moment during the performance was finding my mum in the audience.” – Connor Butler “A memorable moment during the performance was when the air cannons went off with confetti, it made me smile. When the curtain rose I saw my family and felt happy.” – Jaynie Moore“My favourite song was ‘Celebration’ because we were so pumped even though it was the last song.” – Brooke Schirmer

KCS PARENTS AND FRIENDS GROUP

The KCS parents and friends group ran a small fundraiser at the Kingston Show during the holidays, there was a small pop up play space with a raffle and guess how many frogs in the lolly jar.

Members of the parents and friends group as well as members of the nature play committee volunteered their time towards this stall in order to provide a school presence within the community as well as to raise funds that can be put towards developing more play spaces for the school yard.

It was an enjoyable day that had much support from the families that were enjoying the show day. Funds raised totalled $144. Prue Goode won the flowers and chocolates that were kindly donated by the Pope Family and Kellie Schaefer won a kite that was kindly donated by Asian Inspiration. Jaxon Trinne guessed the amount of frogs and won the whole jar of lollies that were kindly donated by the Bawden Family.

The Kingston Community School parents and friends group would like to thank everyone involved and look forward to future projects.

PLAYGROUP UPDATE

It is hard to believe that we are already in our last term for the year. This year is going by rather quickly and we have enjoyed seeing the playgroup children growing and learning through play.

At playgroup parents/grandparents and carers are being supported to notice the link between playing and learning. When we engage in play with children we are able to influence their learning by simply talking about what they are doing or seeing. We have assisted families to develop a love of reading stories and singing simple songs and rhymes.

At playgroup we have noticed that the children will spend longer engaging in an activity if they are able to initiate and direct the play. The children are supported to make choices about what they would like to play with and how they like to play. We often find that we assume how a child will interact with an activity only to find the children have other creative ideas. This is great for developing their resourcefulness and creativity. When we allow the children to make choices for themselves we are supporting them to become confident.

Literacy in the early years is not just about learning your ABC’s, literacy for babies and young children is engaging in conversations, exploring books (with or without words), singing, and noticing and naming the world around us. When children are talking about the pictures in books they are developing early reading skills. Engaging in conversations with young children is extremely valuable to their learning.

Numeracy in early years is also not limited to learning to count to ten. Numeracy concepts are developed effectively through play when we notice things like big/small, heavy/light, up/down. We can help children understand many concepts while they play by noticing and naming what they are doing and seeing for example “your tower is very tall” “that bucket of water looks heavy”.

We always look forward to welcoming new families to playgroup. Please feel free to come along on a Wednesday morning from 9.30 am, sessions are free and the atmosphere is very relaxed and welcoming.

Thank you to the lovely families that come along and make our playgroup sessions fun and enjoyable, thankyou also to the staff and community members that support our program. The Kingston District Council also support us financially and for this we are very thankful. This program is valuable for supporting relationships between the children, families, and the school community.
