Presidents Report The 2011/12 season was my first as President, following in the footsteps of Greg McLeod –very big shoes to fill, as Greg has done a wonderful job over the past 38 years, and continues to do so for our great club. The season was a huge learning curve for me, but a most enjoyable one. As stated at Presentation night, the club is about the people in it, and it is for this reason only that I firmly believe the club is heading in the right direction. My main objective for the season was to somehow see the profile and reputation of the club be enhanced, so that it will grow into the most respected and successful club in our locality, not an easy task. I feel that we took many small steps, both on and off the field, towards achieving our goals. I would like to thank the many people who assisted throughout the season, and made our operation a fairly smooth one. Firstly, the coaching staff. Peter Bedford, as senior coach continued to bring his professional approach to training and coaching. Peter worked tirelessly throughout and I thank him for the past few seasons he has contributed in this role. Many young players through our ranks have benefited from Peter’s experience and attention to detail. It is hoped that Peter will continue to develop many of our junior players next season. Tony White assisted Peter throughout the season, and covered for Peter’s six week of absence early in the season. Ken Piesse also contributed throughout this period at training. The Junior coaching staff, including Hatch coaches Allan Manning, Shane Hesline and Mick McCoy were terrific. The junior coaching staff of Peter Robinson (premiership coach), Ben Cuthbertson, Justin Goddard, Christine Carter and Greg Radford were all tremendous throughout the year. The U/16 premiership team in the CMCA is to be congratulated. The Milo program, run by Stephen Mc.Mahon was very well run, with up to 45 children participating over 12 weeks before and after Christmas. The playing group: First XI brilliantly led by Club Champion Tony White, and including many new players this season, Lee Dale and Matt Hawley from England, Jack and Joel from PNG, Aaron Fenton from Nth.Caulfield-Glenhuntly, plus other local boys who had their first match in the seniors included Jamie Parton, Luke Montfort, Nick Gleeson and Leigh Heinrichs, all did really well. It is hoped that most of the senior team will be back again next season. All of these new faces brought a degree of enthusiasm that has not been seen for quite some time around the club. The team won 5 out of 12 matches played to finish 9

th. One or two more wins would have seen us in the finals and been a sensational

promotion for the club. The second XI were ably led by Ash Wood, but had a difficult season with a high turnover of players. However the improvement shown by young players such as Jarrod Dobler and Nick Gleeson all goes well for the future.

Page 6: Kingston Saintskingstonsaints.vic.cricket.com.au/files/2261/files/Cc... · 2012. 7. 5. · Kingston Saints Affiliated with V.S.D.C.A. & C.M.C.A Kingston Saints is the playing name

The Third XI were led by the experienced Ken Piesse, and it was the old hands such as evergreen Phil O’Meara, who showed the way. Unfortunately, the team did not win many matches. The Fourth XI, led by JR Noonan, had a similar tale to the second and third elevens, with a high turnover of players not helping bring consistent performances. Justin Goddard provided a few highlights, including a double hat-trick to win one game. The Committee: Vice President John (JR) Noonan was an able backstop and support who presents many good ideas to the committee. Treasurer Michael O’Shea and Secretary Mark Spencer can be bracketed together as the two quiet achievers on the committee who do so much unseen work that people are not even aware takes place. Michael organised the Technology raffle, looks after uniforms, orders trophies and more. Mark helped co-ordinate the Bunnings fundraiser, and assisted in every social event, plus Milo Cricket. Chairman of Selectors Phil O’Meara does a difficult job without ever complaining and contributes much more than that. This does not include his position as Chairman of the Sub-District Association, which is a huge job. A special thanks to Greg McLeod, our clubman of the year, who has recovered really well from the difficult period he endured last summer. I constantly said to Greg throughout the season to take it easy, but you cannot keep a good man down for long. I am sincerely grateful for all Greg’s assistance (including Robyn’s). Greg was largely responsible for organising the social events for the season –Trivia night with Dean Jones, Hypnotist night, $1200- draw day, finally but not least of all the 50

th. Anniversary Dinner night, which Greg and Michael O’Shea put in an enormous

amount of research and preparation. Mark Spencer and others also put in big efforts here. Greg placed many good articles into the Leader newspaper this year which really enhanced the reputation of the club. We need to keep this excellent relationship going. Chris Murphy and John Dunstan, as bar managers, put in a huge effort every week replenishing the stocks. John’s three lovely daughters Kate, Kelly and Sheridan were great workers behind the bar, and were a pleasure to have around the club. Andrew Greenwood as Manager of the junior program, performed another huge job, with coaches, players and parents to look after, plus organising presentation nights, trophies etc. Sarah M.Coy ably assisted husband Mick run the Hatch team. Peter Robinson coached the U/16 premiership team and assisted wherever necessary on the committee.

I would also like to thank Anne O’Meara and the ladies (Geraldine, Nannette, Gail, Robyn, Clare, etc.), plus some gents on occasions, who each Saturday prepared the afternoon teas for four sides.

Brian Hunt, our hard working curator, again has put in an outstanding contribution at Walter Galt and St Bedes. Not only does Brian prepare wickets for Saturday but also for numerous College games midweek and don’t forget Hatch, Country Week & VMCU games. Brian has many assistants so thanks to Phil O’Meara, Peter Perazzo and Kevin Sullivan for all the hours spent, plus all those that assisted at St Bedes, including JR and Chris Murphy.

To Darren Sheehan, Jonty Noonan, Danny Dobler, Mark Spencer and Peter Corboy for scoring throughout the season. Your contribution to the players is greatly appreciated.

Special thanks goes to Mark Ruddy, who is always there every Thursday night training to cook the BBQ, plus at Milo nights, plus at Bunnings days and whenever else he is asked to assist. Mark is a joy to have around the place, and typifies the helpers we have –they never complain.

I wish to congratulate Anne O’Meara and Jonty Noonan on their appointments as life members being made last year. Both have contributed greatly for many years, and they continue to do so.

To our delegates (Phil O’Meara, Peter Knuppel and Andrew Greenwood) our appreciation for the time you spend at meetings of the Associations that we are involved with (VSDCA and CMCA)

In conclusion, I feel the season has involved many people both on and off the field, who have put in an enormous amount of effort. What is more, they all seem to enjoy it!

I am certain that the club is heading in the right direction, both on and off the field, and look forward to 2012/13 with great excitement.

Warwick Heinrichs PRESIDENT

Financial Report After a sound 2010/11 year financially, the club again hoped to make a sound profit. This was achieved, to a degree, with a profit of $2,518.85 made for the financial year. It is the aim of the club to make the cost of playing as low as possible via subs and weekly fees. The trade off for this is that the Club expects members to attend social functions and support fundraising, such as raffles, etc. It is disappointing that functions were not well supported by club members. It was also disappointing that the Technology Raffle was not supported as well as it should be, especially by the Junior section of the club. The upshot of this failed support will most likely result in an increase in subscriptions. I would like to thank all members of the committee for their diligent cost cutting measures throughout the year. Whilst we are a Not For Profit club, it is prudent to make a little every year to ‘shield’ us from a year where factors outside our control may result in a loss. I would also like to thank the sponsors of the Club, their support is greatly appreciated.

Social Summary

There were high expectations for the Social Side of the club this year as our activities were severely curtailed by rain the previous year.

The first function of the year was a guest speaker luncheon, held at the Melbourne Aquarium with Nick Maxwell as guest speaker. Approximately 130 people were in attendance, and an entertaining day was had by all attendees.

A hypnotist’s night with the ‘Bizarre Gazzard’ was held in late November. A great night was had by all who attended, unfortunately numbers were well down.

The last Saturday before Christmas once again saw the club host Santa and his merry band of followers. Santa was in ‘jovial’ spirits and the young kids loved the evening. It was also a good wind down function for all players and junior parents prior to the hectic Christmas season. The first Saturday back after the Christmas break saw the ‘Past Players and Supporters Day’ with the T20 games against Caulfield played in the 3

rd & 1

st XI’s. A number of past players were in attendance and a great day was had by

all. In late February, the annual Trivia Night was held at the clubrooms, with Rodney Hogg hosting the evening. Approximately 100 people were in attendance and again, a great night was had by all. February saw a number of events. The annual $1,200 raffle was held and, again, numbers were excellent. This year saw an ‘Exhibition’ T20 match against the PNG players on scholarship in Melbourne. The PNG team got up and the interaction between both teams after the game was great. The highlight of the social calendar for the year was the 50

th anniversary celebration, with the Team of the 50 years

announced. Approximately 100 people were in attendance, with a large turnout of former players and supporters. It is hoped that those returning former players will attend further functions in the years to come. In late March the Presentation Night was held in the clubrooms. It should be said that attendance was poor, with many current players not in attendance, however, it was pleasing to see a number of former players and officials attend. Again, a good night was had by all. The final function was a guest speaking luncheon at the clubrooms in May, with Kim Hughes the speaker. A great day was had by all, and Kim’s stories were particularly entertaining. A big thank you to all committee members and families/partners that assisted with the running of these functions. Hopefully next season the weather will be kinder and the club can more proactively advertise these events.

Appreciation

The committee would like to express their gratitude to the following:-

The councillors and staff of the City of Kingston for the support during the year, in particular John Nevins CEO and Grant Smethurst and the staff of Sport and Recreation department of the council.

To the Jack Sheehan, Ken Hilton and the executive of the VSDCA for their support and guidance during the season

To the Tony Dodemaide and Cricket Victoria for the grant and support during the season

To the executive of the CMCA for providing an excellent and safe competition for our juniors to participate.

To Paul Amy, Brad Beitzel and the team at the Leader Newspaper for the excellent articles about the club during the year.

To VicHealth in assisting the club maintain its level 3 Good Sport Program.

To Adrian Jones (Cricket Victoria) for the assistance in getting a number of players and coaches level 1 accreditation.

To VSDCUA and the umpires that have overseen the games in which the club participated

Junior Development Programs

Each year our junior development program starts in June/July with our Winter Cricket Academy with a focus on assisting young players that show promise and an intention to play seniors and also players transitioning out of junior ranks i.e. those who played Under16 cricket last year and will now be senior players.

The club, during the season, also runs a successful Milo in2Cricket program. The program is a fun introduction to the game for young boys and girls. It provides children with an enjoyable and safe learning environment where they can build their confidence develop new skills and play games. This season we had 60 registered participants and were looked after by co-ordinator Steve McMahon and assistant’s Sven Samild, Dale Bowles and Sam Taylor.

Community Support

The club in conjunction with the Mordialloc Braeside Junior Football club and the Walter Galt Committee of Management sub-leased the pavilion with the approval of the City of Kingston to the following Organisations: Parkdale Women’s Club – Each Wednesday, Parkdale Senior Citizens – Each Tuesday, Parkdale & Mordialloc Combined Pensioners – Each Thursday

These organisations meet weekly between 10am and 4pm on the days prescribed. Other organisations that are given permission to use the pavilion (free of Charge) during the season:- St. John Vianneys’ Primary School, Mordialloc Youth Centre Netball Club, Parkdale Pacers Basketball Club, Moorabbin Saints Junior Football League, Southern Football League, Football Victorian, Victorian Sub District Cricket Association, Parkdale Auskick, Cricket Victoria.

The City of Kingston has advised us that works to dig up, fill and sew drought proof grass at Walter Galt has been postponed until the 2013/14 season. We meet regularly with the council over this and other issues that affect the club and their involvement in the club’s existence cannot be underestimated.

Participation

This season we again fielded a side in this elite under 15 competition run by ‘Subbies’ under the guidance of Alan Manning, Shane Hesline, Justin Goddard & Mick McCoy. Ben Gole from our club was joined by boys from Local Clubs and the Mornington Peninsula area. Though the club did not have the success it was hoping the team represented the club professionally and positively.

The club again participated in the Subbies 20/20 competition held on three Tuesday nights during the season. We defeated Moorabbin and Ormond, but went down to Malvern and Croydon.

Page 11: Kingston Saintskingstonsaints.vic.cricket.com.au/files/2261/files/Cc... · 2012. 7. 5. · Kingston Saints Affiliated with V.S.D.C.A. & C.M.C.A Kingston Saints is the playing name

The Club congratulates all those members of the club that got to represent the Associations and districts that we are involved. Kiaan Storti represented the CMCA Under 12’s who were Mitchell Shield winners, Brendan McCoy represented the CMCA Under 14’s, Jack O’Toole represented the South East Bayside Breakers in the Under 16 Dowling shield and Julian Hanfi-Scott represented the South East Sharks, also in the Under 16 Dowling shield. We congratulate these boys on their fine achievements.

Team of the 50 Years

In preparing for the Club’s fiftieth year, the Committee decided that it would be fitting to select a Team of the first fifty years. The Kingston Saints Cricket Club Team of the first 50 years was announced at the 50th Anniversary Dinner on February 25th 2012. The selectors had a very difficult task, but ultimately chose a team that was balanced and about which few would argue. Only 1st XI performances and players with a minimum of 50 First XI matches were considered.

All statistics mentioned here are First XI statistics only and it should be pointed out that these figures are the best we can come up with as some books and games are not available from the St. Bede’s Old Collegians Cricket Club. The Team in Batting Order

Luke Wintle – Right Hand Batsman and Slow Right Armed Bowler. Luke started with the club as a junior and was successful through the junior ranks, playing his first game in the firsts as a 15 year old. Luke played 93 games as well a number of games with premier clubs Melbourne and Frankston. Luke played in the 2001/02 premiership. Luke made 3045 runs at an average of 36.25 with 2 centuries and 19 fifties. His highest score was 146. Luke also took 24 wickets with his best figures of 3/22 and took 55 catches. He won the club championship in 2000/01 and won the batting average 4 times. Luke treasured his wicket and would very rarely bowl a loose ball. Luke in one season scored 517 runs and 4 times made over 400 runs in the season.

Peter Lewis – Left Hand Opening Batsman and Wicket Keeper. Peter came to Kingston Saints after time at Mentone C.C. and Moorabbin C.C. He captained the club from 1983/84 to 1991/92. In his 114 games Peter made 2355 runs with a highest score of 111. Peter made 2 centuries and passed 50 on 9 occasions. As a keeper Peter took 103 catches and 19 stumpings. Peter won the Club Championship in 1989/90, was made a life member in 1994 and captained the 1986/87 premiership side. Peter was an opening batsman who guarded his wicket and when he got going had a very stylish technique allowing him to play every shot in the book.

Phil Chapple – Right Hand Upper Order Batsman, Right Arm off Spin and occasional Wicket Keeper. Phil joined the club in 1977 when he moved into the area. The club then approached Phil to captain the club, which he did for three seasons. Phil played in 2 premierships in his 85 games and won the batting average on 4 occasions, making 2335 runs at an average of 28.48 with 4 centuries and a highest score of 136. Phil passed 50 on 6 other occasions. Phil took 16 wickets with the best figures of 4/16 and took 27 catches and 8 stumpings. Phil was a stylish bat that timed the ball extremely well and the opposition found him difficult to get out. Phil holds the record for the number of runs in a season with 597 in 1979/80

Kevin Ladd – Left Hand Batsman. A powerful man that in his more than 61 games averaged 34.73 runs with 4 centuries and 6 fifties with a highest score of 106. Kevin had the ability to take an attack apart as well as stonewall if needed. Kevin started his time with the club in the late 60s and was captain of the club between 1970 and 1972. He won the batting average on 8 separate occasions between 1969 and 1978 and won a bowling average as well. Making a comeback in the early 90s he again captained the club and won the batting average. Kevin was awarded Life Membership of the club and won the Club Championship on two occasions. Kevin was a very talented sportsman and could be argued is the player of the first 50 years. It was with great sadness that we got the news that he had passed away after a short illness last year.

Rod Howe – Right Hand Batsman and Right Arm Medium Bowler. Coming through the juniors whilst a boarder at the college, Rod played 81 games with a highest score of 156 and an average of 27.66. He made 3 centuries and fifty on 9 other occasions. Rod also took 31 wickets with a best of 4/33. Rod played in the 1979/80 premiership and captained the club for two seasons in the eighties as well as in 1992/93 and won the batting average in 1981/82. Rod was made a life member at a young age and continued to work for the benefit of the club. In 1985/86 Rod also was presented with the Best Clubman award.

Phil O’Meara (Captain) – Right Hand Batsman and Right Armed Leg Spin Bowler. Phil came to the club in 1994 after 9 years as Captain/Coach of Port Melbourne and previously a stint at St. Kilda (Vic) and Freemantle (WA) clubs in grade cricket. Phil followed his sons to the club and played in two premierships. Phil is the longest serving President of the club (11 years) and recently took on the position of Chairman of VSDCA. Phil was awarded life membership in 2003. Phil played 57 games with a batting average of 29.66 and took 16 wickets and captained the club in 1996/97. Phil was one of the people instrumental in getting the club into Sub-district and a lot of what we see

Page 12: Kingston Saintskingstonsaints.vic.cricket.com.au/files/2261/files/Cc... · 2012. 7. 5. · Kingston Saints Affiliated with V.S.D.C.A. & C.M.C.A Kingston Saints is the playing name

around the club today can be attributed to his hard work. Phil’s top score of 100 and 2 fifties were complimented by him batting 46 times but was not out 14 times in these innings. This shows how he guarded his wicket and was the rock of the middle order. Phil has spent time as Chairman of Selectors while still playing in the lower grades of the club. Phil has also been awarded the Best Clubman award.

Morrie Haar – Right Hand Batsman and Right Armed Bowler. Morrie’s philosophy of if you bowl on the stumps and the batsman misses he is out was one of the reasons that in his 52 games he took 110 wickets with the best haul of 8/34. His average of 11.71 complimented his batting average of 29.22 to make him one of the club’s elite All-rounders. Unlucky not to playing a premiership with the club, Morrie came to us in 1981 from Mordialloc C.C., joining his son who was playing juniors. 8 fifties and 6 times taking 5 wickets in an innings Morrie had the ability to turn the game in the clubs favour with both bat and ball. In 1981/92 Morrie scored 512 runs in the season and took 31 wickets winning the batting and the bowling averages as well as the club championship.

Anthony (Tony) White – Right Armed Leg Spin and Right Hand Middle Order Batsman. Tony is the current captain of the club and after coming to the Saints in 1997 from Moorabbin C.C.; he has played over 120 games and made over 2000 runs. His highest score of 133 as well as 6 fifties would have him in the side as a batsman, but with Tony approaching 150 wickets with his leg spin and occasional wrong-un, Tony can come into the side as one of the genuine all-rounders. Tony played in 3 premierships and last season won his first club champion, while he has also won the bowling average, his second with the club. Tony has the best bowling figures of 6/70 and has proved on many occasions that he has the ability to win a game with the bat or the ball. Tony was the first player from the club to represent the Sub District in a representative game.

Tom Hynes – Right Armed Fast Bowler and Right Hand Batsman. Tom played in two premierships (the first two of the Club) and captained the club from 1963 to 1966. Tom played over 63 games and took over 249 wickets at an average of 10.98, his best effort being 8/35. Tom also made 5 fifties and he won the club championship on 4 occasions and the bowling average 5 times. Tom is a Life Member of the club. Tom took 10 wickets in a match 4 times and five wickets in an innings 18 times. Tom took 84 wickets in a season, which is still a club record.

Bernie Symons - Left Arm Medium Fast Bowler and Left Hand Batsman. Played 174 first XI games and played in 2 first XI premierships. A stylish left hand swing bowler, who came to the club in 1977 with a reputation of a gun, country batsman. Bernie received the reputation as one of the finest bowlers in the competition with 437 wickets at an average of 13.69. His best bowling figures were 9/54 in an innings and a best score of 52 was one of three scores of 50 or better. Twice he took 10 wickets in a match and 26 times 5 wickets in an innings, winning the bowling average on 3 occasions. Bernie also served on the committee of the club for a number of years as well as a four year stint as Chairman of selectors and was inducted as a life member in 1996. He was the Club Champion in 1987-88. Bernie captained the club in 1992/93. Bernie represented the F.D.C.A. in representative games over the years. Bernie’s stock ball was the ball that swung into a right hander, but had the ability to every now and then cut the ball away from the batsman.

Mick O’Shea – Right Armed Medium Fast Bowler and Right Hand Bat. A bowler that you can depend on to shoulder a lot of the load in a game. Mick has played in 3 premierships as he approaches 150 games. With over 300 wickets, 13 times taking over 5 wickets in an innings and best figures of 7/48. Debuting in 1989, Mick was made a Life Member of the club in 1999 and has won the bowling average on 6 occasions as well as the seconds bowling average on 7 occasions. Mick has been Club Champion on 2 separate occasions. Mick consistently took between 26-30 wickets in a season. Mick has served on the committee continuously since 1993/94 as Senior Vice President and more recently Treasurer and was presented with Best Clubman Award in 1997-98. Mick will bowl all day if you ask him to and his line and length will remain on target every ball.

Coaches Report A mediocre overall performance the previous season saw the committee determine itself to attract some quality players to our club in an effort to improve on field results. The tentacles were spread far and wide with the acquisition of two PNG players Jack Vare (wicketkeeper) and Joel Tom (pace bowler), together with Aaron Fenton, cousin of Ash Wood and two English boys, Lee Dale and Matt Hawley. All were decided assets to our club and at times showed their true capabilities; a greater resolve by all batsmen to occupy the crease would have enabled the Senior XI to achieve a much better outcome. Tony White, Joel Tom & Mick O’Shea battled manfully with the ball and deserved more support from the batsmen. If only the passion and commitment of our two oldest senior players, Tony White (Captain) and Mick O’Shea, had permeated through the playing group, a more productive season would have ensued. The opportunity for the 1

st XI to challenge for a final’s berth was severely dented with lack lustre efforts against

Endeavour Hills and Brighton pre-Christmas. Our performances against the so called ‘better’ teams in our division showed that we were capable of mixing it with the best, but lack of consistency cost us dearly. As coach, one could not have wished for better leadership than that which was provided by Tony White. Ash Wood did a sterling job in captaining our 2

nd XI, but a lack of continuity within the playing group impacted greatly

on achieving a successful season. The 3

rd XI, led by the inimitable Ken “Master” Piesse struggled throughout the season, but provided opportunity for

youngsters who hopefully will make their mark in the future. The standout in the 3rd

’s was the batting of the ageless Phil O’Meara. JR’s 4

th XI, whilst being in final’s contention late in the season, were unable to deliver the ‘coup de grace’ – this

should provide a catalyst for a more committed, determined approach in season 2012/13. Warwick Heinrichs in his first year as president provided great leadership with wonderful support to me, as did the committee in general. The social highlight of the season was the celebration of the 50

th anniversary of the St John Vianneys – St Bedes Old

Collegians – Kingston Saints Cricket Clubs – well done Greg McLeod and Mick O’Shea for the organisation for such a fantastic evening. Congratulations to Phil O’Meara, Mick O’Shea and Tony White on being named in our morphed club’s finest 11. Congratulations to John, Andrew, Robbo, Justin, Dirk and Christine on your work with the juniors – the premiership was a fitting result for all your efforts. Well done to Brian Hunt for continuing to provide good cricket wickets. Thanks also to Darren, Warwick, Jonty & Dan for stepping up to perform the scoring duties. Our club has been fortunate in securing a coach in the calibre of Craig Entwistle – I trust he can oversee a period of success, with all players responding to his obvious professionalism. “Success attributes itself to a combination of effort and ability. You can be proud of your effort……you can’t be proud of your natural ability. Because by definition it’s what you were born with, it’s the luck of the draw.” So the only thing to really judge you is ‘your personal effort’. So you should try as hard as you can and if you are not doing that, you are letting yourself, and the people around you, down. ‘Go Saints’

1st Eleven Report The 1

st XI finished 9

th this season, with five wins and seven losses. Although we finished ninth, we were very

competitive and it was a massive improvement from the previous season. The committee were busy in the summer, recruiting Joel Tom and Jack Vare from Papua New Guinea, Lee Dale and Matt Hawley from England and Aaron Fenton from the VTCA. All these players were experienced, seasoned cricketers whose passion and intensity for the game inspired others in the team to create a great atmosphere within the group. Our year started off with a terrific win against Bayswater at home. Chasing 210, our openers Lee Dale and Aaron Fenton, put on 119 off 19 overs. Aaron made 87, Lee 39, with Brett Hampton chipping in 49 not out to get us over the line. Losing to Brighton by 20 runs hurt, but was quickly followed by with a first for the club in a win over last years champions Malvern. After posting 250, with Lee Dale making 76, we rolled Malvern for 136. The effort in the field was a standout, Joel Toms runout and Brett Hamptons catching complementing a team effort with the ball. After losing the next four through some inconsistent performances, we went to Noble Park low on confidence. And when we were 5/34,another loss looked on the cards. Then Matt Hawley and Leigh Heindrichs put on an unbeaten 114, their patience and resilience against a quality attack was a highlight. Matt followed up with 2/3 to take man of the match honours, with Joel taking 2/23. Other wins against Ormond (Brett Hampton making a superb 149, Mick O’Shea 4/25), Croydon( Joel Tom match figures 9/61) had us in the final 6 before losing our last couple to just miss out. Our improvement came on the back of some fine bowling by Joel Tom, 30 wickets at 14.63, and the evergreen Mick O’Shea : 23 wickets at 15.48. Both men finished inside the top ten of competition averages, their consistent line and length a key to their success. Joel consistently beat the bat and was unlucky not to have taken more wickets, while mighty Mick had another stellar year and proving age is no barrier. The batting also improved with 4 players making over 300 runs for the season: Brett Hampton, Lee Dale, Aaron Fenton and myself passing the mark. Brett had an outstanding year with 322 runs at 40.25 to take out the club batting average, his 149 against Ormond containing all the shots in the book. Leigh Heindrichs also chipped in with 190 runs at 47.5 with 5 not outs. His patience and value on his wicket really shored up the middle order, while Jack Vare made many starts (244 runs at 27). Jack’s keeping was outstanding and his intensity really rubbed on his teammates. Overall a promising year, and with continued improvement next season the club should be contesting their finals series. I have thoroughly enjoyed this year as Captain and look forward to next season under Craig Entwistle, who is a fantastic signing for the club as Captain/Coach. I would like to thank Peter Bedford as coach of the club. Peter is a quality person whose passion and knowledge of the game led the club to this improved season. His generosity with his time and willingness to help improve every player at the club made him a great coach. I wish him well at Malvern CC next season. Thanks to Warwick Heinrichs and the committee for their support and tireless work in running the club. To Phil O’Meara and the match committee for their season, to Darren Sheahan, John Noonan and Warwick for scoring throughout the year. To Mick O’Shea for his work in the ones, virtually being team manager, vice captain and star bowler all in one. Without the help of these individuals, my job as Captain would be that much harder and is much appreciated. I look forward to seeing you all next season.

Tony White Captain

2nd Eleven Report The 2011-2012 season was shaping to be a good one for the club and in particular the 2

nd eleven, after the signings

of 5 new players that were to walk straight into the ones which in turn would bolster the 2’s. As things panned out it was not to be with injuries crippling the club throughout the year causing no side to get their best 11 on the field at any one time. The 2’s however made a drastic improvement on previous seasons walking away with 3 wins and a draw leaving us in 12

th place.

Although the 2’s only won 3 games we were more than competitive in 3 others in which we only lost by a wicket or a couple of runs. Coming into Christmas we were still more than in the hunt for finals being only 1 game out of the top 6 with a good run home to come. Unfortunately we were unable to fire after Christmas and only being able to produce one win would mean we would miss playing finals by 22 points. This was extremely disappointing for us as

Page 16: Kingston Saintskingstonsaints.vic.cricket.com.au/files/2261/files/Cc... · 2012. 7. 5. · Kingston Saints Affiliated with V.S.D.C.A. & C.M.C.A Kingston Saints is the playing name

all our hard work came unstuck in just 2 or 3 games in a row where we were rolled for low totals and passed with little resistance. This was a very low point for the side and in particular the individuals in it as nothing was going our way and time and time again old habits would creep in and spoil what we were trying to achieve. There were several outstanding efforts this year individually with Macca getting the highest score of the year when he compiled a well-made 102 as stand in captain against Moorabbin. Both Nick Gleeson and myself got our highest career scores this season with scores of 92 and 92* respectively, Nick also scored another 2 half centuries for the season and myself one other. Luke Montfort also came up with his highest senior score this season when he made 50 against Elsternwick. Unfortunately there were only 5 players in the team to score more than 100 runs for the season and only 3 that scored more than 110 and with this happening we are failing to produce enough runs constantly to win games of cricket. With the ball we also had some terrific individual efforts led by the new kid on the block Jarrod Dobler who finished with 14 wickets for the season and taking 3 or more wickets in an innings on 3 occasions. His best figures were 4-55 and also had figures of 3-95 and 3-26. Luke Montfort and Chris Giosis also did good jobs with the ball finishing with 9 and 7 wickets respectively, after time and time again being thrown in the deep end and having to bowl at tough times and often when the batting had let them down and given not much to try and defend. Another shining light this season was young Kye Steegstra who was given a go later in the season and showed that even with his tiny frame and slow medium bowling, if you get the ball in the right areas the opposition can’t score off you and will often give up their wickets, his best effort was 3-16 against Moorabbin. Congratulations to the recipients of the awards for the season: Batting average - Ash Wood, 234 runs @ 33.43 Bowling average – Jarrod Dobler, 14 wickets @ 23.21 Captains award – Nick Gleeson Finally I would like to thank my right hand men, Steve McMahon and Andy Wingrave, who filled in the captaincy for me when I was either in the 1sts or unavailable this season, and also being there to talk tactics with on game day. I would also like to take the chance to thank the entire committee for their tireless work behind the scenes getting 4 senior sides on the ground each week. It definitely doesn’t go un-noticed. I would also like to thank the grounds staff for getting wickets up each week in what was a tough season for cricket. Finally I would like to thank my fellow captains and match committee for their support and I look forward to doing it all again next season. Ash Wood Captain

3rd Eleven Report

Our season of modest returns and a bottom half finish was not a true indicator of the depth of talent and the endeavour we showed during a difficult year of wash-outs, unavailabilities and 11th hour team changes. We won only twice against Moorabbin and Ormond, the second game by 10 wickets, but rarely were we truly outplayed, the sheer grit of seasoned players like Phil O'Meara, my vice-captain Chris Murphy and Justin Goddard leading the way for the younger ones. Had we had a little more luck with the toss, several more games would almost certainly have been ours, as we found ourselves sent in on wet wickets which only improved later in the day. Phil was again our outstanding batsman, at the ripe old age of 60 and for once I didn't run him out which was a big plus. His 69 not out in the one-dayer against Noble Park was a particularly fine effort after he came to the wicket in the first over of the game. He also got 60 against Elsternwick, another of the top teams, after we'd lost 5-17. His work off the field and around the club as chairman of selectors, among so many differing roles, was even more valuable and I thank him sincerely for his support. Porno kept wickets beautifully, throwing himself around on the Saturday and spending Sundays paddling in Port Phillip trying to heal an aching body. He helped save us from outright defeat in the first game against Bayswater, batting almost 20 overs late on the second day when we'd lost 7-54. Big Juzz enjoyed his overdue promotion from the fourths and bowled the fastest spells of the season and took catches at second slip like he was plucking berries from a vine. His 46 not out opening up on a bouncy E. E. Gunn wicket against Ormond showed just how talented he is.

Page 17: Kingston Saintskingstonsaints.vic.cricket.com.au/files/2261/files/Cc... · 2012. 7. 5. · Kingston Saints Affiliated with V.S.D.C.A. & C.M.C.A Kingston Saints is the playing name

We struggled all year with numbers and my thanks to two of my Cricket Society buddies Les Pimm and Trevor Clinnick for filling in when required, giving us a 10th and an 11th player when we looked like going in short. Les' bowling against Moorabbin was pivotal in us defending 124 at St Bedes before Christmas. From 14.2 overs he took 1-12! It was particularly pleasing to see so many of our younger ones advance. Teenagers like Will Robinson, Keiran Ravi, Kye Steegstra and James Colquhoun all had their moments, 15-year-old Will opening the bowling regularly from early in the season. It was great his father, Peter, another of our stalwarts, got to also share in Will's improvement, Pete playing five or six games in the thirds alongside his son. Young Keiran, also just 15, helped win the match at Ormond, knocking over the opposition's two best and most experienced players with big in-swingers with the new ball. Like Will and Kye, he has a very bright future. Young James, just one of our Peninsula School contingent, adapted nicely to open-age cricket and by the season end was bowling nice and full and at the stumps, much to his captain's pleasure. He also is a talented batsman as shown by his top score of 38 in the second innings against Moorabbin. In conclusion I'd like to thank our coach Peter Bedford for his mighty efforts all year, chairman of selectors Phil, my fellow captains Wacker, Ash and JR and all on the committee, particularly president Warwick who ran practice smoothly alongside treasurer Mick, another of our evergreens. The work of Spence, Greg, Mark, Hunty and others was enormous and I thank each and everyone of you for your contributions to helping our club run smoother. I'm also appreciative of our 'home' umpires Chopper and Wal for their efforts. See you next summer!... MASTER Ken Piesse Captain

4th Eleven Report

The club is fortunate in having plenty of keen players that can play 4th XI and this was reflected in that we only had 24

players go through the side this year; it would have been less if there was not so much turnover in the higher grades, and one of the major factors in why we had a poor season in terms of wins.

Highlights of the year included Justin Goddard’s double hat-trick to win the game against Malvern which saw them collapse from 6/213 to all out, 3 runs shy of our score

Lydon Desa easily picked up the batting award by scoring a couple of centuries (127 and 113) early in the season, but then lost his “mojo” when he had a couple of games in the 3rds to drop his average back to 51.

Dirk Geleit and his son Lachie played a number of games this year and were fantastic opening the bowling together. Team Geleit! Dirk took out the bowling averages with 20 wickets at 7.9, his BB 5/52

One of the things I appreciate as a captain is commitment week-in week-out and life is so much easier knowing that people are available to play just about all the time. The following guys delivered that in spades –

Shawn Whittle

Ryan Hayes

Ben Cuthbertson (behind the stumps)

Sam Boyd

Jordan Wade

Ross Hart and his partner Caroline Sobotka who took 2 wickets in both games she played

Pardeep Singh

Peter Robinson

Matthew McCoy I awarded Matty McCoy the Captain’s award because of his club commitment as he did not miss a game, though he only played 5 with us.

Junior Report: After a successful albeit wet 2010/2011 season, the Kingston Saints juniors were looking forward to an enjoyable and dryer 2011/2012. We had consolidated our position within the CMCA winning our first junior premiership in the new association and were looking for more success in the season ahead. Player numbers were slightly down from the previous season & whilst the Under 14’s & 16’s had healthy numbers in their respective squads the Under 12’s could only field one team. Our Under 12B’s & 14C’s were graded lot higher than they should have been & although they only won a few games displayed terrific camaraderie & played every game in great spirits enjoying their cricket all season. After Ben Cuthbertson’s Under 16’s narrowly missed a finals berth, Justin Goddard’s Under 14’s won their semi final but fell 5 runs short in the preliminary final against the eventual premiers to just miss out on a spot in the Grand Final. In his final year of junior coaching club legend Peter Robinson took his Under 16B side to the Grand Final & won our first Under 16 premiership in the CMCA , our second CMCA flag overall. It was a fantastic result for Peter & the boys - a great way for most of the team to finish their time in the juniors. The CMCA sides & coaches were as follows Under 12B - Greg Radford Under 14C – Christine Carter Under14B – Justin Goddard Under 16D – Ben Cuthbertson Under 16B- Peter Robinson A big thank you must go to all our coaches who win , lose or draw are not only developing the cricketing skills of ALL our young players but also teaching them to try their hardest and do their best not only for the club & their teammates but to better themselves . Our club has an unwritten rule that simply states that irrespective of a child’s ability they will all get a fair go & playing opportunities will be shared across the team as evenly as possible. We are very lucky as a club to have coaches who commit the time and have the drive to get the best out of our players. Thanks also to the junior & senior committees, team managers, assisting parents & other helpers who through the year managed to help organise registration days, presentation nights and other duties as required. Special mention to the efforts of our Registrations officer / Administrator Sarah McCoy who worked tirelessly to keep all the lists up to date & organised all the processes involved in her responsibilities with a minimum of fuss – thank you Sarah. Thanks again to our Sponsors who kindly donated vouchers for our monthly Presentation nights

Brendan McCoy – CMCA Under 14’s

Ben Gole - KSCC Hatch squad member

Jack O’Toole– South East Bayside Breakers Under 16 Dowling shield

Julian Hanfi-Scott – South East Sharks Under 16 Dowling shield This season we also saw a number of our juniors not just fill in with the senior sides but consolidate their positions & become regular members of the respective senior squads. This integration of our juniors into our seniors is an important responsibility of both the junior & senior sections of the club & we must work hard to retain our junior players for future senior squads We are all looking forward to a bigger, better 2012 / 2013 season and will be active in the pre season to canvass the local schools & footy clubs to recruit as many players as we can to keep our junior numbers healthy. Andrew Greenwood Junior Coordinator

U16A 2011/12 Season Report This year we welcomed Jack O’Toole back into our team, together with Julian Scott (who played last season) and Ryan McLean and Craig Sterling from Dingley. These 4 players were often the difference between winning and losing games. We started well with a Twenty/20 game away against Ormond, winning easily. The only bowler to take wickets was Raf with 2 for 27 while the best batters were Ryan McLean 40no and Bailey “Bucky” Dillon who made 38no in very entertaining fashion. Another Twenty/20 followed at home with a comfortable win against Kingston Heath. Marcus “the magician” Robinson took 3/19 while Bailey took 2/16. The batting was pretty even with Craig retiring on 22 the pick of them. We played Moorabbin at home in a 25 over one-dayer in round 3 and just fell over the line. Bailey was the pick of the bowlers with 1/8 (only 3 wickets fell). They just failed to chase down our score by three runs. Julian made 40no and Jack 38no on a day where we moved the batting order around to give others a hit. We then played McKinnon away in a rain interrupted drawn game. Marcus with 3/20 and Bailey 2/19 were again the pick of the bowlers. Matt McCoy made 31 and Jack 30. The game was even poised when a storm hit. Back home for a 2-dayer against Brighton District and bowled them out for 113. Ryan took 3/16 off 7 overs while Bailey and Marcus were again amongst the wickets with 2 each. New week we destroyed them by making 8/302. Most of us got runs with Julian 61no and Will 59no the best. The last game before Christmas was away against the top team Cluden. After winning the toss we bowled only to see them make 4/194. Wickets were shared but again Marcus was the best bowler taking 1/11 off 6 overs. The next week we were always up against it after losing early wickets. However Ryan 39 and Kiran 27 were the pick of the batsmen. We finished all out for 132. After Christmas was against the old enemy Parkdale United and we had 6 out of 12 unavailable for the first week so the boys arranged for a couple of mates to help as well as George coming up from the other team. We batted first and made 4/188 with Ryan making 50 retired and Will 47. They beat us on the last ball of the day next week even though for 30 overs we had only 9 fielders. Bailey, Ryan and Craig all picked up 2 wickets each. The next game we played Le Page Park and it resulted in a big win for us. They made 102 with Marcus again picking up 4/21 off 8 while Ryan and Kiran both took 2 wickets. We enjoyed good batting practice by making 263. Craig made 51 retired, Will 44 and Jack 42 retired. Jonno put together a well made 28. In the final home and away game we played East Sandy at home and needed to increase our percentage to get a high spot in the final 4. We batted first and made 7/209. Kiran 48 no and Will 38no were the stars. East Sandy were bowled out for 94 in the first innings with the wickets shared, although the pick of the bowlers was Kiran with 3/5 off 5 overs of unplayable in-swing. We had them 5/35 off 10 overs in the second innings with Matt taking 2/0 off 1 over. This left us in 3

rd spot on the ladder and playing Parkdale United at Glen Street in a cut-throat semi-final. We won the

toss on a hot evening and elected to bat. After being 0/47 at the half-way mark we ended up making 4/191. Ryan Mclean made 52 retired, Julian 35 and Jack 34. The next week was cooler but very windy. The United team were soon in trouble and although they fought hard they couldn’t make the runs, being all out for 151 in the 39

th over. The

star was Kiran Ravi who was nearly unplayable taking 4/14 off 7.1 overs. Our fielding was excellent making 3 run-outs and some excellent catches taken. Kye was excellent behind the stumps letting go only 1 bye. Moorabbin beat Cluden in the other semi so we got a home grand-final at the Walter Galt small oval. Big crowds turned up each week and the atmosphere was excellent. Moorabbin won the toss and put us in to bat! We were soon in trouble however but consolidated with Craig making (27), Jack 58 and Julian 54no. Raf chimed in later on with a quick-fire 31 no and we finished on 9/217. The next week Moorabbin started well but once their gun bats went out the rest crumbled. The destroyer was Marcus again with 4/18 off 7. Ryan took 2/18 and there were another 2 run-outs. Marcus was named man-of-match by the umpires. He finished the year taking 21 wickets bowling off about 3 steps. A sensational year. Kiran Ravi won the bowling average taking 11 wickets at 7.73, while Marcus’ cost 9.86. Bailey Dillon took 13 wickets in a very consistent performance. The batting average was won by Julian Scott making 229 runs at 114.50. The pleasing thing was that 8 players made 100 runs or more and 4 made over 200 runs. The Coaches award went to Jonathon Greenwood. Six years in a row this team has made the finals, playing in 3 Grand Finals and winning 2 Premierships. A great performance. Many thanks to Andrew Greenwood, Mick McCoy, Shane Steegstra, Brad O’Toole, Derek Scott and Mick Dillon for their help during the year. Peter Robinson Coach.

Under 14 A 2011/12 Season Report

What a fantastic season!! A wonderful effort to make the preliminary final and get within a few runs of defeating the eventual premiers. The ultimate highlight without doubt was the development and improvement of all players throughout the season and the way in which they played as a team. Each week it seemed that one or a couple of our players would provide us with outstanding individual efforts. This wasn’t left to the same one or two players, but each player throughout the season seemed to have ‘their time to shine’. The evenness of the team throughout the year is best demonstrated by the bowling figures. Not including our keeper, every player took at least six wickets with the highest being thirteen wickets. The batting was a bit of a different story with both Lachie Geleit & Brendan McCoy having outstanding seasons. Award winners for the year were: Batting Average - Lachie Geleit Bowling Average – Luke Goddard Coaches Award – Brendan McCoy Fielding Award - Mason Bode Most Improved – Josh Stowers. I would like to mention Kiaan STORTI and Brendan McCoy who both made the association representative side for their age group. Lastly, I would like to say thanks to the parents for the support you showed me, but more importantly the support you showed your children by being at the game on those early Saturday mornings. Thanks, Justin Goddard Coach

Kingston Saints 8/66 lost to Dingley 5/193 Round 2 ended with a draw due to weather, we played Cluden away & it was going to be a close one. They made 2/102, we were on 3/48 before the rain settled in. Draw – washed out. Round 3 was our first two day game against Beaumaris at home. They made 8/191, Cameron was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 10 off 4 overs, other wicket takers where Callum, Liam Pidd, Nivin, Sen & Ben. We finished with 7/204 & bowled Mackie out for 121, a great team effort from all the boys. Kingston Saints 7/204 won against Mackie all out for 121. Round 5 was reduced to a one day game due to weather. We played Le Page at home. Best of the bowling was Nivin with 2 for 4, they finished all out for 109. We thought we had a chance chasing 109, but unfortuneatly fell short by 35 runs finishing on 74. Kingston Saints 9/74 lost to Le Page 109. Round 6 we played Brighton Union away. We struggled with the bat, top scorer was Nivin with 14, we ended up all out for 50 of 23 overs & gave them 69 extras. They made 8/223 & won convincingly. Kingston Saints all out for 50 lost to Brighton Union 8/223. Round 7 was against Brighton 2 at home & was a one day game. Top scorer was Nivin with 30 retired, Cameron made 18, Quinn 17 & Liam Pidd 12. Best of the bowling was Nivin with 2 for 13, Cameron 2 for 28 & Zac 1 for 25. We made 5/118 but fell short 53 runs, Brighton 2 made 5/171. Kingston Saints 5/118 lost to Brighton 2 5/171. Round 8 was against Dingley again away. The best partnership seen at U12 level & was a pleasure to watch. Nivin 73 & Cameron 59 not out, we finished all out for 166 against the top of the table. We bowled well giving them only 16 extras, however Dingley finished with 3/333 & showed why they are unbeaten this season. Kingston Saints all out for 166 lost to Dingley 3/333. Round 9 we played South Melbourne away. We bowled first, best of the bowling was Ben with 2 for 6, Nivin 2 for 8, Cam 1 for 0 & some great fielding by all the boys. We bowled them out for 118 & felt confident we could reach this score. Cameron made 19, Nivin 18 & Ayden 12. It was a rain affected match, but we managed to take a win by 4 runs. Kingston Saints all out for 121 won against South Melbourne all out for 118. Round 10 was against Bentleigh Uniting at home, we won the toss & chose to bowl. Best of the bowling was Denzell with 2 for 25, Cam 2 for 24 & some great catches by Callum & Liam Pidd. Unfortuneatly we were reduced to 8 players for our batting innings, Liam Radford top scored with 12, followed by Liam Pidd on 10. They bowled us out in 19 overs for 52 so put us in again & again bowled us out in 8 overs for 46.

Congratulations to our trophy winners, Nivin for batting & bowling award, Callum for the Fielding award, Zac for the Coaches award & Denzell for the most improved award. Many thanks to Andrew Greenwood for all his great work as our Junior Co-coordinator. I would also like to thank all the parents for helping every weekend. Another season gone, but I will always look forward to the next. Greg Radford U12B Coach.

Milo IN2CRICKET This year was a bumper year for Milo IN@CRICKET with about 60 children registered and regular attendances well into the 40’s.

Friday nights were again the most social night in Kingston with numerous parents enjoying a drink whilst watching the kids enjoy the cricket. My goal for next season is to convince a few more to get involved on the field whilst not affecting bar takings! We now have a core group of children who have been doing Milo In2Cricket for 3 years and are ready to be extended. To this end I intend to run a Milo In2Cricket Have A Game Program next season which will give these children some match simulation and may see a few of them ready to step into Under 12's at some stage next season. My thanks go out to all who helped during the year especially Mark Ruddy, Greg McLeod, Mark Spencer, Chris Murphy and Phil O’Meara who assisted in various ways and kept the BBQ going. Thanks also to the players of KSCC who came down on Friday nights when rostered and, occasionally, when not rostered. You can’t underestimate the effect the player’s presence has on the kids. Thanks to Sven Samild, Dale Bowles and Sam Taylor, my "co-coordinators" who are a great help on the night and also during the week with organisation. Thanks, also, to our Papua New Guinea representatives Jack Vare and Joel Tom who attended every week and brought their Milo In2Cricket experience from PNG to the sessions. Thanks also to the parents who got involved. Without their help it would be difficult to run and I have plans to get them more involved next season. I am looking for assistance to run the program next year as I will be involved with the Have a Game program so anyone willing to assist with the Have A Go program will be most welcome. Looking forward to another successful Milo IN2CRICKET in 2012-2013. Stephen McMahon
