KING’S HOUSE SCHOOL Newsletter 14 February 2019 Page 1 Dear Parents There have been some wonderful examples in some of our recent assemblies of the array of talent that the boys here at King's House School have. On Friday morning I was in the JD for their weekly assembly and we were presented with a wonderful performance by 1B, who talked all about the moon landings back in 1969. It was a real multi-media production which showed how much the boys had learnt and enjoyed this topic. The day before one of our Year 7 forms had presented their assembly about what we can learn from travelling and visiting other cultures. Then on Monday morning in our SD assembly I gave out a range of certificates for boys who’d played in a chess competition last weekend. On Monday morning too, after assembly, both the JD and then the SD boys were treated to a mini-classical music concert by a visiting tuba and piano duo. Andrew Kershaw, the tuba player, didn’t limit himself to the tuba – there was a range of other wind instruments on display - and also talked about the enjoyment and pleasure that playing a musical instrument can bring. Rugby fixtures have continued this week and on Saturday morning I was lucky enough to be at the grounds to see our U11s in action against Downsend in a very tight set of fixtures. The boys had to contend with a ferocious, biting wind as they endeavoured to play passing and running rugby. Our U12 and U13s were also in action away and enjoyed success there. Thank you to all the parents who filled in surveys for the recent ISI Regulatory Compliance Inspection last week. There were clearly lots of very positive comments entered. The inspection went well and we can expect the report with the full feedback in five weeks. Retelling a story

Dear Parents,

After such a busy week last week, it has been

back to normal business in the Nursery.

Caterpillar Class have been learning all about

dinosaurs and there has been some wonderful

dinosaur art, as well as lots of Harry and the

Dinosaur stories. The children re-created one of

the stories in a sand tray, complete with mini

buckets, tiny dinosaurs and cut outs of the main

characters. It was wonderful to listen to them talk

through their play and learn how a story is

constructed.

Last week all the Butterflies designed their own

boat and on Monday the testing centre was up

and running. One by one the children put their boats under the scrutiny

of the testers and I have to say the majority of them were seaworthy. A

few needed minor adjustments but allowed the children to work on their

problem solving skills in such a practical way. Well done Butterflies!

We love to learn new facts in the Nursery and this week we were very

grateful to Elliot who brought in his Kalimbo to show us in music. He

explained it was made from the skin of a fleshy African fruit called a

gourd and it made a wonderful sound! Everyone had a go at playing it

and Mrs Murray was very impressed.

As many of you know the school are big supporters of Rwanda Aid and I

visit regularly with a team of teachers to support their projects. I had a

lovely email last week to say that Toby had collected a donation of £130

at his party and he wanted to donate it all to Rwanda Aid. I was very

touched, what a very thoughtful thing to do and it really will make a dif-

ference. Thank you Toby.

I hope you all have a wonderful half term break.

Dear Parents

Thanks to those of you who were eagle-eyed enough to spot our amusing mistake in the newsletter

last week. It would have been a very musical moon landing indeed had Louis Armstrong joined the

exploration! Continuing on a musical theme, we were treated to a different type of brass player on

Monday, when Alan Gout, a professional musician came in to give a recital for the boys,

demonstrating some very unusual instruments including the didgeridoo, the serpent and the

ophicleide. In Year 3 Science, the boys have been exploring different types of erosion on rocks and

how they change over time. The boys carried out an experiment to observe how the sweets, Skittles,

changed colour and size when water was dropped on top of them. The Skittle represented the rock

and the water represented rain. Love is in the air this week and on Wednesday, Helen Williams

treated the boys to yet another fascinating assembly during which they learnt that St Valentine was a

doctor and a priest who lived in Rome in the 3rd Century. They heard how Christianity was a

forbidden religion at the time and that once Valentine was found out he was imprisoned. During his

life he treated many people and he befriended a blind girl – the last person to receive one of his

letters before he was beheaded. The letter simply read ‘From Your Valentine’. My last word of the

half term will be simply to wish you all a restful break and to say that we look forward to seeing the boys back in school on Monday 25th

February.

Thank you to Andrew Kershaw and Alan Gout who put on a lovely recital for both the

Senior Department and the Junior Department on Monday! We learned all about the

history of the tuba and Andrew brought in a few interesting instruments to play

including the Serpent and the Ophicleide, originating in France and a Digeridoo,

originating in Australia. Andrew and Alan played many different pieces including

The Queen of the Night Aria by Mozart, Hungarian Dance by Brahms and a movement

from a Tuba Concerto by Edward Gregson. It was an exciting performance enjoyed by

all! Meghann Murray

Rugby Round Up

A huge thank you and well done to all the boys who have represented the

school so well over the last 6 weeks. The standard of rugby being played at the

school is superb, the staff have been delighted with the progress each team has

made. As a school we are building a reputation of playing a highly skilled and

competitive style of play and this is down to the hard work the boys put in on

the training field. Whether conditions have been mild and sunny, or wet and

windy the boys’ determination to improve has shone through – something they

should be hugely proud of. As a department we hope they enjoy a good rest

over half term and look forward to seeing what they can produce in the second

half of term! Mr Sam Richards

The Big Read

The Big Read is an initiative to get lots

of the boys reading, enjoying and

discussing the same book at the same time.

Sharing a book can create a ‘buzz’ around a

particular book or author and can aid

understanding and enjoyment. A book for

your son’s year group has been chosen and

details will be available on the parent portal.

The idea is that the boys start (and if they

want - finish!) the book over half-term.

They can then continue reading after

half-term and can submit book reviews if

they wish. This scheme is entirely voluntary

and there is no obligation to take part but

we hope ‘The Big Read’ will gain

momentum and become a permanent part

of our literary calendar.

Boys can find information about the books

on the library and literacy noticeboards.

If you have any questions please feel free to

contact me. Clare Wilkins.

Details of the books are available at:

department/library/
