KING’S HERALD DECEMBER 2019
Volume 59, Issue 12
On An Interim
OK…I’ll tell you the truth. It has been so many years ago that I was an interim pastor I’m needing to read “how to” books. And you have had more than your share of interim times. So I figure we are going to be great together! At the November Congregation Council meeting we appointed the Transition Team as we begin to move in the path of getting a settled pastor at King of Kings Lutheran Church. The Transition Team consists of Chris Hall, Curt Spiller, Sandy Darrow, Joan Bockman and myself. We will be looking at the 2016 Mission Site Profile and addressing revisions and up-dates. We will be looking at the current issues that face KOK and look for ways to deal with those issues.
An interim period gives us time to breathe, time to reflect on God’s mission for our congrega-tion, time to think about who and whose we are. I am happy to be here and to share that jour-ney with you.
And now it is Advent. Preparation time, waiting time, anticipation time. Do come to Sunday worship where we will light the candles, one by one, on the Advent wreath, and wait for the celebration of Jesus’ birth. Come to the mid-week service to “catch the spirit” of the season. On Wednesday evenings we will gather in the Sanctuary for sung Holden Evening Prayer and hear a good Word. On Thursdays at noon we will gather around tables in The Gathering Place for a simple meal of bread and soup and share a rather brief time of prayer and reflection. The theme of these Advent prayers is: Reflecting on Our Relationships in Light of God’s Love.
Because God wishes to be in close relationship with us, let’s use this Advent, this new year of the church, to examine and mend our relationships. Let’s spend time rejoicing and repairing our relationships with neighbor, family, self, and God. When we focus on these relationships, we see that they can be life-giving and risk-taking. They can be vulnerable and forgiving; gra-cious, diverse, and accountable. Advent – the season of preparing for a relationship with
Christ – is truly all about this.
Thank you for welcoming me as your pastor for this interim. Let us walk this path together in love and respect, trusting one another and God, knowing that God is preparing the right pastor for King of Kings.
Living in God’s most amazing Grace, Pastor Karen Marohn

CIRCLE BIBLE STUDY & FELLOWSHIP
Any questions regarding circles you may contact the leaders listed below. Circles meet as follows: Esther Circle: 2nd Monday of month @ 1:00 pm Temp Leader: Loretta Gerken - 760-476-3634
Ruth Circle: 2nd Monday of month @ 7:00 pm Leader: Sandy Darrow - 760-583-0439
BIBLE STUDY
We close out our year of Bible Study with an ad-vent devotional based upon Isaiah. We will be developing, or Creating images (lines) and colors to use art as meditation, intercession, devotion and inspiration. Don’t worry, you don’t need to be an artist. If you doodle and you love Jesus, you can handle it.
PIECEMAKERS
“Those who sleep under a quilt, sleep under a blanket of love.”
One of the fun facts about quilts and quilting is that Antler, No. Dakota has the worlds largest quilt. This has been substantiated by the Guin-ness Book of Records. This quilt is 11,390 Sq. feet with details illustrating the state. Sadly the quilt has no home at this time. I can see why. Who has a bed or wall big enough? Our quilters stick to standard bed sizes when making quilts for Lutheran World Relief and fund raising sales. Incidentally, there is a beautiful queen size quilt for sale. If you were at the Fall Festival, you would have seen it. It is open to bids. Quilting continues at TGP every Thursday morning from nine to noon. Willing hands are welcomed.
CALENDER – STANDING DATES
Bookies: Due to the holidays, the date for De-cember is the 16th instead of the 23rd. We will be discussing Sold on a Monday by Kristina McMorris. This is a poignant story about the fate of some children during the Great Depres-
sion. A sign stating “Two Children for Sale” inspired by an actual newspaper photograph stunned a nation. This is a story of love, redemption and the unex-pected paths that bring us home.
OLD BUSINESS
The Fall Festival was a huge success, not only as a great time together as one big family, but also as a fund raiser. Kudos to the organizers, gift contributors, cooks and bottle washers. That would be such a long list prohibited by word space; but you know who you are.
The following week, WELCA had their business meeting. During this time, we agreed to dis-perse $925.00 to various WELCA and communi-ty organizations. In addition we voted to fill the position of Secretary with Bonnie Jeffries and retained Loretta Gerken as President. After the business was taken care of, we played BINGO and had a wonderful salad luncheon provided by the circles.
NEW BUSINESS
Mark your calendars for December 14th. We will hold our Christmas Luncheon at that time. It will be at the same place, El Camino Country Club. The sign up list is available, with the se-lections of lunch. Don’t wait too long because there is limited space available. Love Gifts will be given to Bread of Life Mission. However, a box for those will be in the Narthex so we don’t have to bring them to the luncheon and all of the congregation can participate. Our traditional Epiphany Breakfast will take place on January 4th. The circles will supply the
brunch. During this time we will celebrate the twelfth day of Christ-mas, the baptism of Jesus and of course, the visit by the Magi. See you at 10:00 a.m. that day.

preserved”. Rose Kennedy
