Are your finances healthy—or could they use a checkup? Start the new year with fresh resolve to achieve financial wellness.

CONTROL DEBT Enhance your financial health by keeping debt manageable. Know what you owe and make a plan to control debt using these tips: Pay off debts with the highest interest rates first, such as credit card balances. Pay as much as you can on your smallest debts and pay at least the minimum on large ones—even modest accomplishments can motivate you to continue. Review your finances to see that you’re not overextended: For example, your home typically should cost no more than 2 to 2.5 times your household income and your mortgage should be no more than 80 percent of the home’s value. Don’t use credit cards to get out of debt.

You’ll not only pay more in interest, but you could damage your financial health and credit score at the same time.

SPEND WISELY Financial wellness is based on living within your means. Spending money carefully and wisely will greatly enhance your financial health. Write down every expense for a month and find out exactly where your money is going. You may be able to identify “extra money” to apply to your goals. Make a realistic budget using convenient online tools such as Mint.com/canada. Two-income families: Try to cover monthly expenses with just one income and use as much as possible from the other paycheck for savings. Before buying, ask yourself if the item is a “need” or a “want.” If it’s the latter, wait a few weeks before you buy to make sure you have the cash in hand—or to decide if you still want it.

INCREASE SAVINGS Saving for retirement, children’s educa-tion, emergencies or other expenses can help protect you—plus it delivers peace of mind. Get in the habit of paying your-self first. Give savings the same impor-tance as paying bills, and save something from each paycheck. Participate in your company’s automatic savings program, if one is available. Many experts suggest putting 25 per cent of your income into savings. But if saving is hard for you, start by saving one per cent of your paycheck and continue to increase your savings level as your salary grows. Save enough in your emergency fund to cover at least six months’ worth of expenses—enough for nine to twelve months is even better. If you do tap into these savings, rebuild the fund as soon as possible. Need a few more pointers? The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada offers lots of money management tips.

The primary purpose of an RRSP is tax deferment from a current high marginal tax rate to a lower marginal tax rate in the future.

If you are one of those lucky individuals whose marginal rate will keep on increasing and never reduce, you do not need an RRSP. The majority of us are not that lucky. Therefore, an RRSP could be quite useful for a number of us.

The following are some of the benefits to an RRSP:

1. Contributions to your allowable maximum are tax deductible

2. All savings grow (without tax), but are taxable when they are withdrawn

3. No tax is payable until withdrawn4. Spousal contributions have many

advantages5. RRSPs may be used toward a first

time home buyers plan6. Lifelong Learning Plan

These are some benefits to RRSPs and they can be an incredible tool if used properly. Unfortunately, too often individuals do not understand the purpose of an RRSP and do not use the tool effectively.

We must remember that an RRSP is not to help you with your down payment on purchasing a home, but instead it is to defer your marginal tax rate. Most young people will have drastic increases in their incomes as their careers take off. One strategy would be to let the allowable RRSP deductions grow and then decide in the future.

So, before jumping on the RRSP bandwagon, ask yourself if it is in your best interest at the particular time or consult with a professional, an accountant might be a good start.

(NC) Finding storage solutions to orga-nize a home can be a daunting task, whether it's for a small condo closet or a spacious family room filled with toys. These simple DIY tips will overhaul key areas in the home to give you a more efficient space from top to bottom.

CLOSET ORGANIZATION“Chances are if you can't see an item of clothing in that crammed space, you aren't likely to wear it,” says a local Home Depot associate. Instead, use a closet kit that includes hanging rods, shelving and hard-ware for an easy DIY installation that will upgrade any walk-in or reach-in closet.

Leverage vertical space for small closets by hanging double rods for shorter garments. Wire shelves are a good addi-tion to hold clothing and other linens, allowing air to pass through so fabrics can breathe, and ultimately last longer.

LAUNDRY SOLUTIONSTwo large machines are enough to monopolize the space in a laundry room, so well-placed storage solutions are key. Associates at Home Depot recommend hanging a wall cabinet above your laundry machines to store detergent and other products that need to be out of reach of children and pets.

If you own a front load laundry pair, install work surfaces on top that include handy pockets to store your cleaning supplies.

Out-of-the-box thinking, like building your own wall-hanging clothes rack that folds out when you need to hang clothes to dry, and snaps back to the wall when not in use, can help for small laundry spaces.

BASEMENT STORAGEIf you have a finished basement, it can be a great space for the family to enjoy. However,

everything a family uses for down time can easily turn into clutter overload.

Consider under-stair shelving to make use of an often-wasted space. Find furni-ture that serves dual purposes – like a bench for seating that also has room for storage inside. You can tuck away the board games for family game night when they're not in use.

Never underestimate the power of totes. Clear totes can help you to organize and store items that aren't in use, and make finding everything easy. Alternatively, opt for totes in colourful or textured versions that can add a punch of personality to open shelving.

More storage solutions are available at www.homedepot.ca.

Tom’s medium is photography and his inspiration comes from outdoors. He captures images of landscapes, waterscapes and flowers, turning them into compelling pictures that have an almost painterly quality about them - hence the name Images Photo Art.

When Tom takes a photograph, he thinks about composition, angle, light and atmosphere. The finished picture might be soft and dreamy,

or bright and cheerful. His intention is to evoke an emotion; it might be calming, exciting or mysterious. Maybe it conjures the memory of a previous experience. And sometimes his images will pose the question “What is that?” provoking a sense of curiosity.

SAFETY REMINDERS FOR WINTER SPORTS

(NC) Winter has great appeal when the ski slopes beckon. But when embracing all that winter has to offer and enjoying our favourite sports, it's important to put safety first.

On the slopes, for example, make sure that ski and snowboard bindings are adjusted for your height and weight. Always check the weather conditions and watch the trails for icy patches and other potential hazards.

Here are a few more safety tips from the Ontario Chiropractic Association:

DRESS FOR THE WEATHER Layered clothing works better to keep your muscles warm and your skin dry so you don't get chilled. You may want to invest in clothing designed specifically for winter outdoor activity, or layer garments made of natural fibres (like cotton, wool and silk).

KNOW WHEN TO RESTRest when you feel tired. It sounds simple but many of us push our bodies even when it screams at us to take a break. Stop your activity immediately if you experience sudden or prolonged pain in any joint or muscle. Cool down by stretching, and change into dry, warm clothes.

STAY HYDRATEDDon't be fooled by the temperature. Your active body needs plenty of fluids even though it's cold outside. Be sure to drink lots of water or juice before, during and after winter sports. Follow these tips, and you'll be well on your way to having a safe and healthy winter.

What a surprise. On a lazy Friday morning, I left the house without any breakfast and only a cup

of coffee in hand. As I was driving northbound on High-way 27 in Nobleton, just north of King Road, I saw the Sunset Grill in the No Frills Plaza. To my surprise, it was already noon, but I thought a late breakfast was just what I needed. Walking up to the entrance, I saw a poster displaying a hamburger and my mouth started to water. I was greeted at the door and seated immediately.

As I perused the menu filled with items, I could not stop thinking about that hamburger. Our lovely server assured me that the hamburger was very good, but advised that it might take a little longer since it is made fresh in-house. I anxiously awaited my meal, enjoying the ambiance observing the polite and courteous staff.

Finally, the hamburger arrived! To the pleasure of my tastebuds it was delicious! It tasted as good as it looked. A younger me would have ordered at least one more because of how good it was. The Sunset Grill hamburger was definitely worth the wait - it's freshness and flavour cannot be beat! If you are in the Nobleton area, a stop at Sunset Grill is a must!

(NC) Calories have traditionally been the focus of our health-conscious culture, with fat, sugar, carbohydrates and other ingredients being singled out as the cause of one health concern or another. Most public health agencies agree, however, that balancing calories with your activity level is the best path to achieving a healthy body weight and better overall well being.

While there are many ways to curb calo-ries, aspartame - a low calorie sweetener used in many sugar-reduced or sugar-free products - has become a hot topic among health professionals and consumers alike. Rest assured that low-calorie sweeteners, like all food additives, undergo an exten-sive scientific review process to ensure they are safe for use in our food supply.

The Canadian Beverage Association has reviewed from the findings of top scien-tific bodies and academics from around the world, and busts some myths and reveals the truth about this ingredient.

Myth: Aspartame is not safe.

FACT: Aspartame has been thoroughly evaluated and deemed safe to consume, and in Canada has been approved as a food additive since 1981. Most recently, the European Food Safety Authority did

the largest analysis of available science on aspartame, and found it to be safe.

Myth: Aspartame causes cancer.

FACT: Lifetime studies of animals and humans have been conducted and demon-strate no connection. All international food agencies agree there is no evidence for aspartame causing cancer, and all approve its use.

Myth: Aspartame can lead to diabetes.

FACT: Aspartame does not alter the blood insulin or blood glucose levels, which are indicators of diabetes. Health Canada has confirmed that aspartame is safe for people with diabetes, and provides an excellent alternative to sugar without the added calories and blood glucose spikes. Both the Canadian and American Diabetes Associations encourage its use to manage diabetes while still enjoying sweet foods or beverages.

Myth: Aspartame tricks the body into craving sugar, or will make me hungrier

FACT: Levels of hunger and fullness are the same after drinking a diet sweet-ened beverage compared to a full-calorie beverage. In fact, people who drink diet beverages reported feeling significantly

less hungry than water-only consumers. Also, a study of people consuming either low calorie-sweetened beverages or water found that the sweeteners group reduced their intake of dessert and sugar intake more than the water group. Numerous studies have demonstrated that low calo-rie-sweeteners can assist with weight loss by helping to reduce calorie intake over time.

The beverage industry has set a goal through their Balance Calories initiative to reduce non-alcoholic beverage calories consumed per person nationally by 20 per cent by 2025. More information is available at www.balancecalories.ca.
