What is a model?

• A system that allows for estimates and/or predictions to be made

• Examples include– The weather forecast– Grade prediction

Example – The Weather Forecast

• Inputs: Things such as wind speed, temperature, air pressure…

• Process: Identifying / using patterns and trends to apply to the current conditions

• Outputs: The weather forecast – future wind speed, temperature, air pressure…

Example – Grade Predictions

• Inputs: CATs, SATs, Reading Ages, Speaking Ages…

• Process: Identifying / using patterns and trends to apply to the current data

• Outputs: Predicted grades, across all subjects

Simple Example

• We know that double glazing might cut about 20% off a heating bill

• We know that the heating bill is currently £400

• Therefore we can predict that the saving might be around £80, if we brought double glazing
