A THRIVING Scout Group today sends out a plea for new volunteers.
The 15th Kilkenny Fort Grange Scout Group is a non profit voluntary o r g a n i s a t i o n located in D a n e s f o r t C o m m u n i t y Centre. Get-togethers are on Mondays and Thursdays. Activities began last May and there are two groups:
B e a v e r S c o u t s , Thursday, 6.30pm to 7.30pm and Cub Scouts, Monday, 6.45pm to 8pm.
The group have 60 youth members and 10 adult volunteers. Two adult volunteers have stepped aside on a temporary basis which has left them with only eight active volunteers.
All members work hard and give as much time as possible but more help is badly needed.
In September a third section for Scouts will be established. If they don’t have a Scout section by then they will not
h a v e anywhere for the cubs to move on to and therefore will lose youth members.
They are now appealing for adult volunteers who have a couple of hours a week to spare to join them as adult leaders.
The group point out that being involved is good fun. They say they already have a great team but need to expand to have a natural progression path for Cubs.

LAST WEEK I discussed the importance to consuming ‘5 A Day’ portions of fruit and vegetables and explained what exactly counts
as one portion of each. I suggest eating 2-3 pieces
of fruit daily, some salad with lunch and two vegetables with dinner. This week, I describe some practical ways and means of making it easier to consume the recommended amount for better health. Breakfast
Have a glass of pure, unsweetened fruit juice
Slice some fresh fruit over your breakfast cereal or toss in a handful of dried apricots/raisins
Mash a banana onto toast or soda bread
Healthy snacksMake some crudités - carrots
batons, celery sticks.Keep a piece of fresh fruit on
hand - before reaching for high sugar/calorie snacks
LunchAdd tomatoes, cucumber, mixed
salad leaves to your sandwichesHome-made vegetable soup for
the colder weather
DinnerTry to include different two
vegetables with dinner
Add extra peppers, mushroom, onion, courgette onto frozen pizza
Make a fresh fruit salad
Think about this:FROZEN vegetables are often just as nutritious and sometimes even superior to fresh vegetables that are not grown in Ireland.
For those children (and some adults too!) who aren’t keen on fruits and vegetables, try a different one each week until you
find some you enjoy. Shop in green grocers to source
more fruits and vegetables locally, hence supporting local agriculture and employment.
When buying root vegetables such as carrots, parsnips and potatoes, buy them with the clay on and store in a cool room. This helps to keep them fresher for longer, preserves vitamin ‘C’ content and prevents food and financial wastage.

A DECISION by An Bord Pleanala to grant permission for an Amusement Arcade in a dedicated retail precinct in the heart of medieval Kilkenny has been described as astonishing and extremely disappointing by Kilkenny Chamber of Commerce.
“The Bord’s decision flies directly in the face of the city’s rich heritage and culture and especially the very substantive and multi-million ‘medieval mile’ project planned for the city,” says a statement received by The Reporter yesterday, Tuesday.
“This decision sends all the wrong signals especially to visitors and tourists alike of what shopping and life in Kilkenny is about in 2013,” the Chamber statement adds.

Thousands pay tribute to JD, aka Galtee
JIMMY [email protected]
Loving tribute: Past presidents and captains of Kilkenny Golf Club pay tribute as the remains of JD Murphy are brought from St John’s Church Photos: Tom Brett Photography
6 2 2013 KILKENNY REPORTER NEWS | 37
Son of our city passes away in Cork
RIP: Paul Delaney
JIM WAS laid to rest following a huge send off by his family and friends. St John’s Church was packed. Jim was a colossus in Kilkenny sporting and business.
He was a passionate Kilkennyman, so proud of his heritage and all things Kilkenny, especially our hurlers. He had a mercurial gift for storytelling, often against himself. Many stories that abounded at his funeral were of epic proportions.
I played at Arklow Golf Club and a local member asked me how was JD? I asked him his name, just tell JD it was Paddy from Arklow and he will know who. Not surprisingly Jim did know Paddy.
In soccer he was a stylish and accomplished centre half with Evergreen and Kilkenny. With Evergreen he played alongside Billy Reinhardt RIP, Liam ‘Chunky’ O’Brien, Pat ‘Rusty’ Scanlon RIP, Tommy Jordan RIP, Danny ‘Algie’ Lanigan RIP, Jim McEvoy and Larry Drennan.
A perfectionist, when he went into team management with Evergreen, he brought them from mediocrity to the final of the FAI Junior Cup in 1983-84 before an attendance of 6,000. No other Kilkenny team either before or since has reached the final. He was a tough task master. He wore the club president’s blazer with great pride.
He was a huge admirer of others’ ambitions and achievements, none more so than when Emfa brought senior soccer to Kilkenny in 1984.
Jim was a very successful
business man. He started with the Royal Liver Assurance Company and worked with GAA Co Board Secretary Paddy Grace, a fellow ‘Continent’ man.
Having attained No 1 sales representative status in Ireland on a number of occasions he moved on to manager of the First National Building Society. Later he set up his own financial business, JD Murphy & Associates.
His contribution to golf was enormous as a player, on club teams, manager, captain 1983 and president of Kilkenny Golf Club in its centenary year 1996. He was a very low single figure handicap golfer who could match the best.
A car accident curtailed his playing days but he was not happy to rest on his laurels. He made a major contribution as a coach, mentor and life advisor to hundreds of budding golfers at the practice grounds at Glendine.
He took great fatherly pride in his son Gary’s achievements on the Professional European Golf Tour.
Local life will be all the poorer for Jim’s passing but those engaging encounters on the soccer fields in Kilkenny, on High Street and at the practice ground at Glendine will last long in the memory.
To his wife Ann and children Jean, Gary, Hilary and Orla, brother Billy, sisters Vera, Kit, Mary, Olive, Clare and Nell, daughter-in-law Elaine, grandchildren Hollie and Daniel goes the sympathy of the Kilkenny sporting and business worlds. DB

Book of the weekIN ‘Phantom’ by Jo Nesbo, Harry is in trouble. After the horrors of a case that nearly cost him his life, Harry Hole left Oslo and the police force far behind him. Now he’s back, but the case he’s come to investigate is
already closed and the suspect already behind bars.
Denied permission to reopen the investigation, Harry strikes out on his own, quickly discovering a trail of violence and mysterious disappearances
apparently unnoticed by the police. At every turn he is faced with a wall of silence.
But Harry is not the only one interested in the case. From the moment he steps off the plane, someone is watching his every move.

TWO feisty sisters are the subjects of a sting attack testing their fidelity, all orchestrated by their foolish lovers in Così fan tutte, Mozart’s comic tale of temptation and seduction.
This dynamic new production by Kilkenny-born director Orpha Phelan, enjoyed both popular and critical success when it opened last November.
Described by critics as “simply exquisite” and “not to be missed” Così fan tutte will delight newcomers and seasoned fans alike. The beguiling beauty of Mozart’s music creates a sublime background for this provocative battle of the sexes.
The talented cast includes Irish soprano Mairead Buicke as sensitive Fiordiligi, with mezzo soprano Martha Bredin as her fiery sister Dorabella, Colette Delahunt plays mischievous maid Despina. Owen
Gilhooly and Sune Hjerrild sing the roles of the two suitors Guglielmo and Ferrando, with Simona Wilding as Don Alfonso at the helm manipulating all the characters.
It comes to The Watergate Theatre on Saturday February 16. Tickets €22, €18, €16.

A ‘MAKER Seminar: Communicating Your Craft’ will be held in Kilkenny from 1.30pm to 5pm on Friday.
‘Communicating Your Craft’ is a seminar designed for craft makers and focuses on the importance of concise and relevant writing in statements and proposals. In place of the object and in support if it; the written
word is a primary tool used to explain, contextualize and promote craft practices within catalogues, articles, websites, exhibitions and in funding applications.
Organized by Crafts Council of Ireland in association with National Craft Gallery, the seminar aims to support makers in effectively
communicating their craft.
Sign up at www.nationalcraftgallery.ie
Also running at the National Craft Gallery is ‘Future Beauty?’ an exhibition of everyday and extraordinary objects – pots, jewels, sculpture and furniture – that were designed and made in twenty six independent Irish studios in the past year.

WITH German and English parents, a Belfast childhood, jewellery studies in England and now working in rural Ireland, it is no surprise that Inga Reed is part of a classic European design school inspired by structural composition, surface detail and making skill.
Inga has a love of precious metals, the
way they are hard and resistant yet can be wrought into flowing tenuous curves or hard-edged precision.
Her pieces combine and contrast metal with pearls and precious
stones, often in place of a metal chain. The work ranges
from hard-edged simplicity
to overt femininity. With each of her pieces, she creates wearable, elegant and
sometimes challenging jewellery. Her final signature is the attention paid to details such as clasps and surface finishes, textures and combinations of materials.
Inga Reed sells and exhibits her work in the USA, UK, Germany, Holland and Ireland.

ED ROMANFF plays Cleere’s Theatre on February 28. The Brooklyn-based singer has a voice that is gentle yet haunting, while his guitar playing is economic and steeped in all stripes of Americana. His debut album ‘Ed Romanoff’ features his friends Josh Ritter, Mary Gauthier
and Tift Merritt.The album evokes
the solo work of Mark Knopfler, the swampy mysticism of New Orleans and the kind of redemption you find at the end of an introspective night with a good bottle of whiskey. “There is something compelling about why I’m doing this now,”
Ed says. “There is truth in a good song, and when you pursue it, and write about something real, you find out something real and true about yourself. And the more you do it, the more it helps you heal, and it heals others in a similar way. It’s a crazy circle but it works.”
THE search is on for Kilkenny’s ‘Town of Food ’, a community that will showcase the best of the county’s food culture and work together to deliver food-related education and training programmes.
To be eligible a town must be a rural town or village with a population of at least 500 people.
The winning town would potentially be eligible for up to €500,000 of grant aid for capital works, LEADER support and grant aid of up to €100,000 towards a
three year programme of food-related training and courses, marketing costs of up to €75,000, up to €50,000 towards operating the marketing plan over two years, up to €50,000 over 30 months towards a co-ordinator for the project and the support of the Kilkenny Food Strategy Coordinator.
Closing date for expressions of interest is February 6 and the final day for submission of application forms is February 27. The winner will be announced on March 6.
