One of the best reasons to go to the cinema for years, it will dispel your cynicism away about the future of

films or indeed the world in general.It is set in the 1920s where silent film idol George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is adjusting, with some difficulty, to the advent of talking pictures. His unhappy marriage is also crumbling along with his career prospects. Luckily for him he has a trusty dog, a loyal chauffeur and the love of the hottest starlet in Hollywood- Pepper Miller (Berenice Bejo) . However he must learnt to put away his pride first and discover the courage to change.Many reviewers are calling this a homage to the silent era but this is not simply a pastiche. It plays with our expectations of a movie and there are actually some really striking moments in it where noise occurs. Like a blind man whose other senses are more acute the viewer becomes more aware of the other stimuli on offer. Not least is the gorgeous use of composition and sumptuous music which will make even the most hardened grouch ignite with joy.There are many references on offer for the film buff to smirk self-satisfying at. From Chaplin and Valentino to ‘ Citizen Kane’ and ‘Singing in the Rain’ it runs the gamut of influences from this golden time in

cinema. Along with Scorsese’s recent masterpiece ‘Hugo’ the audience is reminded what was lost when microphones came in. The romantic scenes are a lot more emotional and the pratfalls are much funnier while the pathos of a sad face in silence is deeply touching.The real trump card is Jean Dujardin who has the charisma and movement of Gene Kelly as well as a striking resemblance to him especially his wonderful smile. He manages to send up and pay his regards to the actors of early cinema while also catching the darkness of this character also. We are reminded of all the lost souls who couldn’t make the transition to talkies during the Great Depression and went from glamour to skid row because of their foreign or squeaky tones. He is supported by Berenice Bejo who is one of the most beautiful new faces to grace a screen in many a year. She manages in several scenes to emit more star power and feeling without using a single syllable. James Cromwell and John Goodman fit seamlessly into proceedings too. But the star of the show is the dog who will inspire the rescue of a thousand Jack Russells from pounds around the world. So if you are feeling depressed after over indulgence at Christmas this will cure you. A pleasure from top to tail this classy treat is not a niche movie for silent movie bores but a big-hearted love letter that will leave anyone smiling for days afterwards. I hope it wins every single Oscar it will be nominated for as it is by far the Best Picture this year or any other this decade. – DARRAGH BYRNE
